Education, Work, and Applications · Speak and Write German: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

Chapter 6 opens Unit II and moves Anna and Mia into a new domain: education, work, and job or course applications. Having consolidated dative case, two-way prepositions, modals, and separable verbs in Chapter 5, you are now ready to add three new tools — the present perfect for describing training and work experience, the simple past of common auxiliaries for short written biographies, and adjective endings after definite articles for richer descriptions of qualifications and positions. You will also develop weil clauses beyond their formulaic Volume I use, applying verb-final order to real explanations about your background.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe your education, training, and work experience using the present perfect.
  2. Use war and hatte to narrate background facts in a short written profile.
  3. Use adjective endings after definite articles to describe qualifications, tasks, and positions.
  4. Read simple job or course postings and identify key requirements.
  5. Write a short application-style message summarizing your qualifications.
  6. Use developed weil clauses to explain interest in a position or program.
  7. Summarize your experience orally in a short, organized account.

Opening Scenario

Anna has settled into her new apartment and now wants to apply for a part-time position at a language school near her neighborhood. Mia, who already works there, tells her about an opening and encourages her to write to the office. At the same time, Anna's friend Lukas in Leipzig is finishing a training program and is writing a short profile for a course he wants to join. Both situations require the same core skill: talking about what you have done, what you had, and why you are a good fit — clearly, briefly, and in an appropriate register.

  1. Read the job posting and Anna's reply below. Notice how definite-article adjective endings appear in the posting's description of the position and the responsibilities.
  2. As you move through the chapter, think about how you would describe your own education and work background in German, using only the forms activated so far.

Core Vocabulary — Ausbildung, Beruf, Bewerbung

This chapter's vocabulary covers education, training, jobs, skills, schedules, and applications. All nouns are listed with article and plural; verbs are listed with their auxiliary for the present perfect, since that system becomes active in this chapter.

Ausbildung (Education and Training)

  • die Ausbildung, die Ausbildungen — the training, apprenticeship
  • das Studium, die Studien — the (university) studies
  • der Kurs, die Kurse — the course
  • das Zeugnis, die Zeugnisse — the certificate, report
  • die Erfahrung, die Erfahrungen — the experience

Beruf (Work and Jobs)

  • die Stelle, die Stellen — the position, job
  • die Aufgabe, die Aufgaben — the task
  • der Arbeitgeber, die Arbeitgeber — the employer
  • die Fähigkeit, die Fähigkeiten — the skill, ability
  • der Zeitplan, die Zeitpläne — the schedule

Bewerbung (Applications)

  • die Bewerbung, die Bewerbungen — the application
  • die Anzeige, die Anzeigen — the posting, advertisement
  • sich bewerben (um + Akkusativ) — to apply (for)
  • die Voraussetzung, die Voraussetzungen — the requirement

Verbs and Auxiliary Selection

  • arbeiten — hat gearbeitet (to work)
  • lernen — hat gelernt (to learn, study)
  • abschließen — hat abgeschlossen (to complete, finish)
  • beginnen — hat begonnen (to begin)
  • wechseln — ist gewechselt (to change, switch)

DACH label: die Ausbildung refers most commonly to a formal vocational apprenticeship, a system especially prominent in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; equivalence to other countries' systems should not be assumed.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Language Note — Present Perfect for Work and Study Verbs

You have already used the present perfect with common verbs. This chapter expands it into the work-and-education domain, where auxiliary choice needs care. Most work and study verbs use haben, but a few — like wechseln, when it describes a change of state such as a job or program switch — use sein. Check each new verb's auxiliary individually rather than assuming.

  • Ich habe drei Jahre in einem Büro gearbeitet. — I worked in an office for three years.
  • Mia hat ihre Ausbildung letztes Jahr abgeschlossen. — Mia completed her training last year.
  • Lukas ist letztes Semester zu einem neuen Studiengang gewechselt. — Lukas switched to a new degree program last semester.
Sentence Bracket — Present Perfect with a Work Verb
Anna hat zwei Jahre als Kellnerin gearbeitet
"Anna worked as a waitress for two years." — hat occupies position two; the past participle gearbeitet closes the bracket at the end of the clause.
Language Note — Simple Past of sein and haben in Written Bios

Short written biographies commonly use the simple past forms war (was) and hatte (had) instead of the present perfect, even though most other verbs still appear in the present perfect at this level. This is a normal feature of written narration, not an exception you need to worry about.

  • Lukas war zwei Jahre lang Student in Leipzig. — Lukas was a student in Leipzig for two years.
  • Er hatte schon Erfahrung in einem kleinen Unternehmen. — He already had experience at a small company.

Only sein and haben are active in the simple past at this stage. Other verbs remain in the present perfect until a later chapter activates the simple past more broadly.

Language Note — Adjective Endings After Definite Articles

This chapter introduces the first controlled stage of attributive adjective endings: adjectives that follow a definite article (der, die, das, den, dem). After a definite article, the adjective usually ends in -e or -en, since the article already signals gender, case, and number.

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativeder neue Kursdie neue Stelledas neue Zeugnisdie neuen Aufgaben
Accusativeden neuen Kursdie neue Stelledas neue Zeugnisdie neuen Aufgaben
Dativedem neuen Kursder neuen Stelledem neuen Zeugnisden neuen Aufgaben

At this stage, focus on nominative and accusative in high-frequency descriptive phrases such as job postings and short profiles. Dative forms appear receptively here and will be developed further in later chapters.

Language Note — Developing weil Clauses

You have used weil in short formulaic answers before. This chapter develops it further: you will now build complete weil clauses with verb-final order to explain interest in a position, a course, or a decision.

  • Ich bewerbe mich um die Stelle, weil ich gern mit Menschen arbeite. — I'm applying for the position because I like working with people.
  • Lukas hat den Kurs gewählt, weil er neue Fähigkeiten lernen wollte. — Lukas chose the course because he wanted to learn new skills.

Remember: after weil, the finite verb moves to the end of the clause. This holds even when the main clause itself contains a verb bracket, as in the second example above.

Diagnostic Practice

  1. Complete with the correct auxiliary: Mia ___ (haben/sein) ihre Ausbildung letztes Jahr abgeschlossen.
  2. Complete with the correct simple past form: Lukas ___ (sein) zwei Jahre lang Student.
  3. Complete with the correct adjective ending: Ich suche die neu___ Stelle in der Anzeige.
  4. Combine with weil: Anna bewirbt sich um die Stelle. Sie mag die Arbeit mit Sprachen. →
  5. Choose the correct auxiliary: Lukas ___ (haben/sein) zu einem neuen Studiengang gewechselt.

Model Dialogue

Anna reads a job posting from the language school where Mia works, then writes a short reply.

Die wichtigsten Aufgaben sind die Beantwortung von Fragen, die Organisation der Kurse und die Betreuung der neuen Studierenden. Wir bieten einen flexiblen Zeitplan und ein freundliches Team. Anna schreibt eine kurze Nachricht an die Sprachschule.

Anna: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, ich habe Ihre Anzeige gesehen und interessiere mich sehr für die offene Stelle. Dear Sir or Madam, I saw your posting and I'm very interested in the open position.
Anna: Ich habe zwei Jahre als Kellnerin gearbeitet und habe deshalb viel Erfahrung im Kundenkontakt. I worked as a waitress for two years, and so I have a lot of experience with customer contact.
Anna: Ich bewerbe mich um die Stelle, weil ich gern mit Menschen arbeite und die neuen Aufgaben interessant finde. I'm applying for the position because I like working with people and I find the new tasks interesting.

Schreiben

Writing Workshop — A Short Application Message

This workshop asks you to write a short application-style message responding to a job or course posting, drawing on the present perfect, adjective endings after definite articles, and developed weil clauses.

  1. Choose a posting. Use the language-school posting above, or invent a similarly simple job or course posting.
  2. Introduce yourself and your interest. Write one or two sentences stating that you saw the posting and are interested.
  3. Describe your background. Write two or three sentences describing relevant education or work experience using the present perfect (or war/hatte for background facts).
  4. Explain your interest. Write at least one complete weil clause explaining why the position or course interests you.
  5. Revise using the checklist below.

Checkliste — Editing Checklist:

  • The present perfect is used correctly, with the right auxiliary for each verb.
  • war or hatte is used correctly for background facts, where used.
  • At least one adjective ending after a definite article is used correctly.
  • At least one complete weil clause has correct verb-final order.
  • All nouns are capitalized; umlauts and ß are used correctly.
  • The register is formal, matching a written message to an unfamiliar employer or program (formal Sie, appropriate greeting and closing).

Culture and Communication

Culture and Communication — Education and Work Terms Across DACH

Education and training systems differ across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and terms such as Ausbildung, Studium, and Lehre carry specific institutional meanings that are not always equivalent to systems in other countries. When comparing your own background to a German-speaking context, describe your experience in plain terms rather than claiming an exact equivalence to a specific local credential.

Regional Note — Application Norms Vary

Application customs, expected formality, and typical document formats vary by country, institution, and employer within the DACH region. This chapter's short application-style message is a simplified, general-purpose communication task, not a model of any single country's formal application process.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wrong auxiliary in the present perfect

Error: *Mia ist ihre Ausbildung abgeschlossen.

Correction: Mia hat ihre Ausbildung abgeschlossen. Abschließen takes haben, not sein, because it does not describe a change of location or state in the way sein-verbs do.

Missing adjective ending after a definite article

Error: *Ich suche die neu Stelle.

Correction: Ich suche die neue Stelle. An attributive adjective after a definite article always takes an ending; it cannot appear in its bare form.

Verb not moved to the end after weil

Error: *Ich bewerbe mich um die Stelle, weil ich arbeite gern mit Menschen.

Correction: Ich bewerbe mich um die Stelle, weil ich gern mit Menschen arbeite. The finite verb must move to the very end of a weil clause, even when other elements come between the subject and the verb.

Chapter Summary

Chapter 6 opened Unit II with the domain of education, work, and applications. You expanded the present perfect into work and study contexts, learned to use war and hatte for background facts in short written profiles, began using adjective endings after definite articles, and developed complete weil clauses to explain interest and motivation. Chapter 7 continues Unit II with health, appointments, and services.
