Medien und digitales Leben

Media and Digital Life · Speak and Write German: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

Chapter 9 completes Unit II with media and digital life. Having developed adjective endings after indefinite articles, prepositions with the accusative and dative in consumer contexts, zu + adjective and comparative forms, and polite request patterns in Chapter 8, you are now ready to expand your set of reflexive verbs, consolidate subordinate clauses with wenn, weil, and dass, work with separable and inseparable prefixes in media verbs, and track pronoun reference across sentences.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss your own media habits and online communication using an expanded set of reflexive verbs.
  2. Use subordinate clauses with wenn, weil, and dass to explain habits, reasons, and reported information.
  3. Use separable and inseparable prefix verbs common in media and digital contexts.
  4. Track pronoun reference across sentences so a listener or reader knows what er, sie, es, and das refer to.
  5. Summarize a short audio, video, or text item in simple German.
  6. Describe a digital problem and write a short support message.

Opening Scenario

Mia, who now works part-time at a customer-service desk, spends her evening messages differently: she talks with her friend Jonas about a podcast she listened to, while her phone's messaging app suddenly stops working and she has to describe the problem to a support chat. Meanwhile, Anna posts a short update about her new apartment, and Lukas reads it and reacts before the two of them switch to a video call to keep talking. Across the chapter, the same people from earlier chapters continue their everyday lives, now in a digital setting.

  1. Read the support-chat dialogue and the reading passage below. Notice how reflexive verbs describe reactions and habits, how wenn, weil, and dass clauses explain circumstances and reasons, and how pronouns like er, sie, es, and das point back to something mentioned earlier.
  2. As you move through the chapter, think about how you would describe your own media habits, summarize something you watched, read, or listened to, and explain a digital problem, using only the systems activated so far.

Core Vocabulary — Medien und digitales Leben

This chapter's vocabulary covers media, apps, messages, devices, privacy basics, and troubleshooting. All nouns are listed with article and plural; verbs commonly used with separable or inseparable prefixes are marked.

DACH label: platform names, data-protection rules, and everyday digital habits vary by country, generation, and platform; this chapter models general, practical vocabulary rather than specific technical or legal instruction.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Language Note — Expanded Reflexive Verbs

Chapter 3 introduced reflexive daily-life verbs in a controlled way. This chapter expands that set with reflexive verbs that describe reactions, interests, and information-seeking, several of which take a fixed preposition.

VerbExampleMeaning
sich interessieren fürIch interessiere mich für Podcasts.to be interested in
sich freuen überSie freut sich über die Nachricht.to be happy about
sich ärgern überEr ärgert sich über die Störung.to be annoyed about
sich informieren überWir informieren uns über die App.to find out about

Notice that the reflexive pronoun agrees with the subject, and the preposition after each verb must be learned as part of the verb; do not assume the English preposition carries over.

Language Note — Subordinate Clauses with wenn, weil, and dass

You have already used dass clauses in Chapter 7 and wenn receptively in Chapter 4. This chapter consolidates all three as productive subordinate clauses, each sending the finite verb to the end of its clause.

  • Ich höre den Podcast, wenn ich Zeit habe. — I listen to the podcast when I have time.
  • Er ärgert sich, weil die App nicht mehr funktioniert. — He is annoyed because the app no longer works.
  • Mia sagt, dass ihr Handy eine Störung hat. — Mia says that her phone has a malfunction.

Do not confuse wenn ("when/if," repeated or conditional situations) with wann (a question word for "when"). Both weil and dass send the finite verb to the end of the clause, just like wenn.

Sentence Bracket — Main Clause plus weil-Clause
Er ärgert sich, weil die App nicht mehr funktioniert
"He is annoyed because the app no longer works." — in the main clause, ärgert stays in second position; in the weil-clause, the finite verb funktioniert moves to the end.
Language Note — Separable and Inseparable Prefixes in Media Verbs

Media and digital vocabulary include both separable and inseparable prefix verbs. The prefix's stress and position depend on which type it is.

  • herunterladen (separable) — Ich lade die App herunter. (I am downloading the app.)
  • ausschalten (separable) — Schalte bitte das Gerät aus. (Please turn off the device.)
  • anrufen (separable) — Ruf mich später an. (Call me later.)
  • verstehen (inseparable) — Ich verstehe die Einstellung nicht. (I don't understand the setting.)
  • bekommen (inseparable) — Ich habe eine neue Nachricht bekommen. (I received a new message.)

In the present perfect, separable verbs place ge- between the prefix and the stem (heruntergeladen), while inseparable verbs never add ge- at all (bekommen, not gebekommen). Do not assume every prefix behaves the same way; check each verb individually.

Language Note — Pronoun Reference Across Sentences

Clear writing and speaking require the listener or reader to know what a pronoun refers to. Track gender and number carefully when a pronoun replaces a noun from an earlier sentence, and use das to refer back to a whole idea rather than a single noun.

  • Mia hat ein neues Handy. Es funktioniert noch nicht richtig. — Mia has a new phone. It doesn't work properly yet. (es refers to das Handy)
  • Jonas hat den Podcast empfohlen. Das war eine gute Idee. — Jonas recommended the podcast. That was a good idea. (das refers to the whole action, not just der Podcast)

A pronoun that does not clearly match its noun in gender and number confuses the reader, even if every individual word is correct.

Diagnostic Practice

  1. Complete with the correct reflexive pronoun and preposition: Ich interessiere ___ ___ (für) Podcasts.
  2. Combine with weil: Er ärgert sich. Die App funktioniert nicht mehr. →
  3. Complete with the correct separable verb form: Ich ___ die App ___ (herunterladen).
  4. Choose the correct pronoun: Mia hat ein neues Handy. ___ funktioniert noch nicht richtig.
  5. Complete with dass: Mia sagt, ___ ihr Handy eine Störung ___ (haben).

Model Dialogue

Mia's messaging app has stopped working, and she describes the problem in a support chat.

Mia schreibt mit dem Support-Chat.

Support: Guten Tag! Wie kann ich Ihnen helfen? Good day! How can I help you?
Mia: Meine App funktioniert nicht mehr, wenn ich eine Nachricht schicken will. My app no longer works when I want to send a message.
Support: Das tut mir leid. Haben Sie das Gerät schon einmal ausgeschaltet und wieder eingeschaltet? I'm sorry to hear that. Have you already turned the device off and back on?
Mia: Ja, das habe ich gemacht, aber es hat nicht geholfen. Ich glaube, dass die App eine Störung hat. Yes, I did that, but it didn't help. I think that the app has a malfunction.
Support: Verstanden. Laden Sie die App bitte einmal neu herunter. Das löst das Problem meistens. Understood. Please download the app again. That usually solves the problem.

Comprehension — Model Dialogue

1. Wann funktioniert Mias App nicht mehr?

2. Was hat Mia schon versucht?

3. Was soll Mia jetzt tun?

4. Find one wenn-clause and one dass-clause in the dialogue.

Sprechen

Speaking Practice

Aktivität 1: Mediengewohnheiten und ein digitales Problem (Media Habits and a Digital Problem)

Work with a partner. Partner A talks about media habits and briefly summarizes something recently watched, read, or listened to; Partner B plays a support-desk role and helps describe and solve a digital problem. Then switch roles.

Partner A — Nutzerin/Nutzer

  • describe a media habit using a reflexive verb and a wenn-clause
  • summarize a short media item in one or two sentences
  • describe a digital problem using a separable-prefix verb

Partner B — Support

  • ask a clarifying question about the problem
  • suggest one troubleshooting step using an imperative
  • use at least one dass-clause when confirming the issue

Solo alternative: Record a short message describing your media habits and a recent digital problem, using only the forms activated so far.

Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria

  • Comprehensible description of a media habit and a digital problem.
  • At least one correctly formed reflexive verb with its preposition.
  • At least one correct subordinate clause with wenn, weil, or dass.
  • Clear pronoun reference across sentences.
Lesen

Reading Practice

Read Anna's short post about her new apartment and Lukas's reply, then answer the questions that follow.

Beitrag und Antwort — Soziale Nachrichten

Anna: Ich bin endlich in meiner neuen Wohnung angekommen! Es gibt noch viel zu tun, aber ich freue mich sehr darüber. Wenn alles fertig ist, lade ich ein paar Fotos hoch. Lukas: Das freut mich total für dich! Ruf mich an, wenn du Hilfe beim Einrichten brauchst. Ich glaube, dass wir das Wochenende dafür nutzen können. Anna: Das ist super, danke dir! Ich informiere mich noch über ein paar Möbelgeschäfte in der Nähe.

Verständnisfragen

1. Worüber freut sich Anna?

2. Was macht Anna, wenn alles fertig ist?

3. Finde ein Beispiel für ein Pronomen, das auf etwas Vorheriges verweist, und erkläre, worauf es sich bezieht.

Schreiben

Writing Workshop — Summarizing a Media Item and a Support Message

This workshop asks you to write two short pieces: a brief summary of a media item and a short support message describing a digital problem, drawing on expanded reflexive verbs, subordinate clauses with wenn, weil, and dass, separable and inseparable prefix verbs, and clear pronoun reference.

  1. Choose a media item. Pick a short podcast episode, video, article, or post you know, or invent a simple one.
  2. Summarize it. Write two or three sentences describing what it is about and why you are interested in it, using a reflexive verb such as sich interessieren für.
  3. Describe a digital problem. Write two or three sentences describing a device or app problem, using at least one separable-prefix verb and one subordinate clause.
  4. Request help. End the support message with a clear, polite request, recycling a polite request pattern from Chapter 8.
  5. Revise using the checklist below.

Checkliste — Editing Checklist:

  • Reflexive pronouns and their prepositions match the verb used.
  • Subordinate clauses with wenn, weil, or dass send the finite verb to the end of the clause.
  • Separable-prefix verbs are correctly split or joined depending on position; inseparable prefixes are not split.
  • Every pronoun clearly matches the noun or idea it refers to.
  • All nouns are capitalized; umlauts and ß are used correctly.
  • The register matches the task (informal for a friend, more neutral for a support message).

Culture and Communication

Culture and Communication — Digital Norms Vary

Digital habits, favored apps, and communication norms differ by age, platform, region, and personal preference across German-speaking communities, just as they do elsewhere. This chapter's dialogues and readings model general, practical communication patterns rather than describing any single generation's or platform's specific norms. Do not assume that one messaging app, posting habit, or communication style represents all German-speaking users.

Regional Note — Privacy and Safety Language

Everyday conversations about privacy and data protection use practical, general vocabulary such as die Privatsphäre, das Passwort, and vorsichtig sein. This chapter does not provide technical cybersecurity instruction or legal guidance on data protection; specific current rules, platform policies, and security practices should be verified through official and current sources when they matter.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wrong preposition after a reflexive verb

Error: *Ich interessiere mich an Podcasts.

Correction: Ich interessiere mich für Podcasts. Sich interessieren always takes für, not an; the preposition must be learned with the verb rather than guessed from English "in."

Finite verb not moved to the end in a subordinate clause

Error: *Er ärgert sich, weil funktioniert die App nicht mehr.

Correction: Er ärgert sich, weil die App nicht mehr funktioniert. After weil, wenn, and dass, the finite verb always moves to the end of its own clause.

Unclear pronoun reference

Error: *Mia hat ein neues Handy und eine neue App. Sie funktioniert nicht. (unclear: does sie mean the phone or the app?)

Correction: Mia hat ein neues Handy und eine neue App. Die App funktioniert nicht. When two possible nouns could match a pronoun, repeat the noun or choose a clearer reference so the reader is not left guessing.

Chapter Summary

Chapter 9 completed Unit II with the domain of media and digital life. You expanded your set of reflexive verbs with fixed prepositions, consolidated subordinate clauses with wenn, weil, and dass, practiced separable and inseparable prefix verbs common in media contexts, and learned to track pronoun reference across sentences, while continuing to recycle dative pronouns, case-marked noun phrases, modal advice, imperatives, and polite request patterns from earlier chapters. Chapter 10 reviews and integrates all of Unit II.
