Wünsche, Pläne und Ratschläge
Chapter Objectives
Chapter 12 turns from narrating the past to talking about what you want, what you would do, and what someone should do. You will use the set formulas ich hätte gern and ich würde gern to state wishes and preferences, use könnte in controlled advisory frames, and introduce infinitive constructions with zu for expressing goals and plans. By the end of the chapter, you will be able to state a wish, give a short piece of advice, and negotiate a plan within familiar limits.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Use ich hätte gern and ich würde gern to state wishes and preferences politely.
- Use könnte in set advisory frames to suggest a possibility or give gentle advice.
- Use infinitive constructions with zu to express a goal, plan, or intention.
- Recognize modal verbs referring to past obligation or ability in context.
- Give a short, appropriately toned recommendation to a friend or in a service context.
- Negotiate a simple plan by weighing preferences, constraints, and alternatives.
Opening Scenario
Mia is planning a weekend trip with Anna and wants to know what her friend would prefer to do. At the same time, Jonas asks a colleague for advice about a scheduling conflict at work, and Lukas writes a short message to a service desk stating what he would like instead of what he has now. Each situation calls for the same basic tools: saying what you would like, suggesting what someone could do, and stating a goal without overcommitting to a fixed plan.
- Work through the vocabulary, grammar, and model dialogue below before attempting the practice tasks.
- Notice how ich hätte gern, ich würde gern, and könnte soften a request or a suggestion.
- Pay attention to how the tone of advice changes between a conversation with a friend and a message to an institution.
Core Vocabulary — Wishes, Advice, and Constraints
This chapter's vocabulary supports stating what you want, offering advice, and explaining why a plan does or does not work. Gender and plural forms are included for every active noun.
Wünsche (Wishes)
- der Wunsch, die Wünsche — the wish
- die Vorliebe, die Vorlieben — the preference
- das Ziel, die Ziele — the goal
- die Alternative, die Alternativen — the alternative
- vorziehen — to prefer
Ratschläge (Advice)
- der Rat, die Ratschläge — the piece of advice
- der Tipp, die Tipps — the tip
- empfehlen — to recommend
- vorschlagen — to suggest
- raten (+ Dat.) — to advise (someone)
Pläne und Einschränkungen (Plans and Constraints)
- der Plan, die Pläne — the plan
- die Einschränkung, die Einschränkungen — the constraint, limitation
- der Termin, die Termine — the appointment, deadline
- vorhaben — to plan, intend
- abhängen von (+ Dat.) — to depend on
Nützliche Ausdrücke (Useful Expressions)

- Ich würde gern... — I would like to... (do something)
- Du könntest... — You could...
- Es kommt darauf an. — It depends.
- Das hängt davon ab, ob... — That depends on whether...
Register note: ich hätte gern and ich würde gern are polite, everyday formulas usable with friends, colleagues, and service staff. They are not restricted to formal Sie contexts, though tone and surrounding wording still shift with address level.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns — Wishes, Suggestions, and Goals
Chapter 12 introduces three related tools for talking about what has not happened yet: wishing, suggesting, and stating a goal. This chapter does not teach the full Konjunktiv II paradigm. Instead, hätte, würde, and könnte are activated as set, high-frequency forms used in fixed communicative frames.
Ich hätte gern and Ich würde gern
Ich hätte gern is used with a noun to state a wish for a thing. Ich würde gern is used with an infinitive at the end of the sentence to state a wish to do something. Both forms are more polite and less direct than a plain statement or a plain möchte-request, and both are widely usable across registers.
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ich hätte gern + noun | Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. | I would like a coffee. |
| ich hätte gern + noun | Wir hätten gern mehr Zeit. | We would like more time. |
| ich würde gern + infinitive | Ich würde gern am Samstag wandern. | I would like to go hiking on Saturday. |
| ich würde gern + infinitive | Würdest du gern mitkommen? | Would you like to come along? |
These forms are taught here as fixed, high-frequency frames. A broader Konjunktiv II system, including other verbs and past hypothetical meaning, is not part of this chapter.
Könnte in Advisory Frames
Könnte softens a suggestion. It is common in advice given to a friend as well as in more careful, indirect suggestions in service or workplace contexts.
Only könnte(st/n) is activated productively in this chapter. Other Konjunktiv II modal forms remain outside this chapter's scope.
Infinitive Constructions with zu
An infinitive clause with zu states a goal, plan, or intention connected to a main clause. The infinitive stands at the end of its clause, and zu comes directly before it. Separable-prefix verbs split around zu.
- Combine: Ich habe vor. Ich fahre am Samstag weg. →
- Complete: Es ist schwierig, ___ (einen Termin / finden).
- Rewrite using zu: Anna möchte früh aufstehen, um pünktlich zu sein. (Identify the separable verb and its split form.)
Model Dialogue
Context: Mia and Anna are planning a weekend trip. Informal register, friend to friend.
Guided Practice
- Complete with hätte or würde: Ich ___ gern mehr Zeit für Hobbys. Ich ___ gern öfter Sport machen.
- Give advice using könnte: A friend says, "Ich finde keine Wohnung." Respond with a suggestion.
- Combine into one sentence with zu: Lukas hat vor. Er lernt eine neue Sprache.
- Rewrite more politely using ich hätte gern: Ich will einen Tisch für zwei Personen.
- Write one sentence stating a personal goal using an infinitive clause with zu.
Listening Practice
Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following script at a natural pace. Listen once for the general idea, then again for detail.
1. Warum hat Jonas ein Problem am Donnerstag?
2. Was hat die Kollegin vorgeschlagen?
3. Was hat Jonas vor?
4. Find one sentence with könnte and one infinitive construction with zu in the script.
Speaking Practice
Aktivität: Einen Plan aushandeln (Negotiate a Plan)
Work with a partner. Choose one of the two role-card pairs below. Each person states a wish, listens to the other's constraint, and works toward a plan that both people can accept, using ich hätte gern, ich würde gern, and könnte.
Partner A — Wochenendplan
You would like to go hiking this weekend. State your preference and respond to your partner's constraint with a suggestion.
- Use ich würde gern to state your wish.
- Offer an alternative with könnte if needed.
Partner B — Wochenendplan
You have a scheduling constraint (an appointment, a family obligation, or limited time). Explain it and suggest an alternative.
- Use es hängt davon ab or das geht leider nicht to explain the constraint.
- Offer an alternative with könnte.
Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria
- Clear statement of a wish using ich hätte gern or ich würde gern.
- At least one suggestion using könnte.
- At least one infinitive construction with zu stating a plan or goal.
- A constraint is explained clearly and respectfully.
- The negotiation reaches some kind of resolution or acknowledged compromise.
Solo alternative: Write both sides of the negotiation yourself, then read the exchange aloud, taking each role in turn.
Reading Practice
Read this short advice-column snippet, then answer the questions that follow.
1. Was ist das Problem der Leserin?
2. Welchen Rat gibt die Antwort?
3. Finde einen Satz mit könnte und einen Infinitivsatz mit zu im Text.
4. Wie würdest du der Leserin antworten? Schreibe einen zusätzlichen Vorschlag.
Writing Workshop — Advice to a Friend or Client
This task asks you to write a short message giving advice, using this chapter's wish formulas, advisory könnte, and infinitive constructions with zu.
- Choose a situation. Pick one: advice to a friend about a small everyday problem, or a short message to a service desk stating a wish and asking for a suggestion.
- Decide the register. Choose du for a friend or Sie for an institutional context, and keep it consistent.
- Write your message. Use four to six sentences, including at least one wish formula, one suggestion with könnte, and one infinitive construction with zu.
- Acknowledge a constraint. Include at least one sentence that explains why something does or does not work.
- Revise using the checklist below.
Checkliste — Editing Checklist:
- A wish is stated clearly with ich hätte gern or ich würde gern.
- At least one suggestion uses könnte appropriately.
- At least one infinitive construction with zu is correctly formed, including correct placement with separable verbs.
- Address level (du or Sie) is consistent throughout.
- All nouns are capitalized; umlauts and ß are used correctly.
- The advice respects the reader's autonomy rather than insisting on one solution.
Culture and Communication
Advice among friends in German-speaking contexts is often offered as a suggestion rather than an instruction, commonly softened with forms such as könnte or phrased as a question. In institutional or professional settings, similar softening appears alongside more formal address and more structured phrasing. In both cases, advice is generally framed to leave the decision with the person receiving it, and this pattern should be treated as common rather than universal, since directness still varies by individual, region, and relationship.
Ich hätte gern is widely used across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in shops, cafés, and offices as a standard polite way of ordering or requesting something. Some regions and generations favor slightly different everyday alternatives in casual speech, but ich hätte gern and ich würde gern remain broadly understood and appropriate defaults for this chapter's productive use across DACH contexts.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: *Es ist wichtig pünktlich zu kommen.
Correction: Es ist wichtig, pünktlich zu kommen. A comma normally separates the main clause from an infinitive clause with zu when the infinitive clause is more than a single infinitive.
Error: *Ich habe vor, zu wegfahren.
Correction: Ich habe vor, wegzufahren. With separable-prefix verbs, zu is inserted between the prefix and the verb stem, not placed before the whole verb.
Error: *Ich hätte gern wandern.
Correction: Ich würde gern wandern. Ich hätte gern is followed by a noun; ich würde gern is followed by an infinitive at the end of the clause.
Chapter Summary
Chapter 12 introduced tools for talking about wishes, advice, and plans without requiring the full Konjunktiv II system. You used ich hätte gern and ich würde gern to state wishes, used könnte in set advisory frames, and used infinitive constructions with zu to express goals and intentions. You also practiced negotiating a plan by weighing wishes against constraints and giving advice that respects the other person's autonomy. These tools will support the more detailed spatial description work of the coming chapter.
