Wiederholung 3: Beruflich und gesellschaftlich handeln
Chapter Overview and Objectives
Chapter 15 is the Unit III assessment. It brings together the workplace communication of Chapter 11, the institutional and bureaucratic language of Chapter 12, the intercultural narration of Chapter 13, and the identity and community discussion of Chapter 14 into a single set of scenario-based tasks. Tobias, whose panel preparation with Mira closed the previous chapter, now moves through a connected sequence of professional and civic situations: he listens to a workplace voicemail, reads an official notice, writes a formal email, mediates key information for a friend, and speaks about an intercultural experience with clear framing. This chapter introduces no new grammar. It asks you to draw on formal register, passive and impersonal constructions, genitive phrases in institutional contexts, and Konjunktiv II formulas that Chapters 11 through 14 have already developed, and to use them together under normal discourse pressure.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Understand a workplace or institutional message and identify its key requirements.
- Interpret an official notice, including passive and genitive constructions, accurately.
- Write a formal email that requests clarification or information appropriately.
- Mediate the key content of a formal or official text for someone who has not read it.
- Narrate an intercultural incident and discuss identity or community experience with respectful, personal framing.
- Select register, tone, and structure appropriately across workplace, institutional, intercultural, and community contexts.
Opening Scenario
The week after his panel discussion, Tobias has a full schedule: a voicemail from his supervisor about a deadline, an official notice from his university's international office, an email he needs to send requesting clarification, and a conversation with a friend, Selin, who has just arrived from abroad and needs help understanding a notice she received. That evening, Tobias also tells Selin about something that happened to him when he first moved to his current city, to help her feel less alone in adjusting to a new place. This chapter asks you to move through a similar sequence of tasks, drawing on everything you have developed across Unit III.
- Review the Unit III Systems Review and Vocabulary Review.
- Complete the Listening, Reading, Formal Email, and Mediation tasks in order.
- Complete the Speaking Assessment.
- Finish with the Practical Performance Task, which integrates all components.
Unit III Systems Review
This section reviews, without teaching anything new, the systems that Chapters 11 through 14 activated. No system below is new; each is recycled here for assessment.

- Formal connectors
- Case after common official prepositions
Chapter 13 — Reisen, Begegnungen und Missverständnisse
- Konjunktiv II for polite and hypothetical repair
- als versus wenn in past narration
- Reflexive and reciprocal verbs
Chapter 14 — Identität, Gemeinschaft und Sprache
- Clear pronoun and reference control across longer discourse
- Combined relative and subordinate clauses
- Register-sensitive vocabulary for identity and community

Listening Assessment
Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following voicemail aloud. Listen once for the overall content, then again for specific details.
3. Was soll Tobias tun, sobald der Bericht fertig ist?
4. Identify one Konjunktiv II form in the script and explain why it is used here rather than a simple statement.
Reading Assessment
Selin has received the following notice from the university's international office and is not sure what it requires. Read the notice carefully.
1. Was wird von allen internationalen Studierenden verlangt?
4. Identify one passive construction and one genitive phrase in the notice, and explain what each communicates.
Formal Email Task
Selin is unsure whether her insurance certificate from her home country will be accepted. Write a formal email on her behalf to the Studienberatung, asking whether a foreign certificate is acceptable and what she should do if it is not. Use appropriate formal Sie style, at least one infinitive clause with zu, and a clear, polite closing request.
Betreff: Frage zur Bescheinigung der Krankenversicherung
[Write the email body here.]
Model answer appears in the Answer Key. Other accurate, appropriately formal versions are acceptable.
Mediation Task
Selin does not read German confidently yet. Summarize the notice from the Reading Assessment for her in English, clearly, accurately, and without adding information the notice does not contain. Then, in German, write two to three sentences of practical advice for her, using at least one Konjunktiv II form.
Aufgabe
1. Summarize the notice for Selin in English (3–4 sentences).
2. Write 2–3 sentences of advice for Selin in German, using at least one Konjunktiv II form.
Speaking Assessment
Aufgabe: Eine Erfahrung erzählen und einordnen
Work with a partner. One of you narrates a short intercultural incident (real or invented), similar to Tobias's story for Selin; the other listens, asks a clarifying question, and then briefly summarizes what they understood.
Partner A — Erzähler/in
Narrate a short intercultural incident using at least one combined relative/subordinate clause and correct als/wenn distinction.
- Frame the incident as your own experience, not a general claim.
Partner B — Zuhörer/in
Ask one respectful clarifying question, then summarize the incident, keeping pronoun reference clear.
- Use at least one polite Konjunktiv II question, such as Könntest du das genauer erklären?
Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria
- Clear narration framed as personal experience.
- Accurate als/wenn distinction and at least one combined clause.
- At least one polite Konjunktiv II form from the listening partner.
- Clear pronoun and reference use throughout.
- Accurate, respectful summary by the listening partner.
Solo alternative: Record yourself narrating the incident and summarizing it as if for a friend, checking your clause combinations, tense choice, and pronoun reference.
Culture and Communication
A single day of communication in German-speaking contexts often moves between quite different registers: a formal notice from an institution, a workplace voicemail, and a personal conversation about identity or experience with a friend. Recognizing which register a situation calls for, and shifting between them appropriately, is itself a communicative skill this chapter assesses.
Institutional notices, forms, and procedures vary across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and even between individual universities, offices, or employers within the same country. The notice and voicemail in this chapter represent one plausible style; always verify current requirements with the actual institution involved rather than assuming a single national procedure.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: *Hey, kannst du mir sagen, ob meine Bescheinigung okay ist? (too informal for an official request)
Error: summarizing the notice as saying a specific extension will definitely be granted, when the notice does not state this.
Correction: Summarize only what the notice actually says, and clearly separate any personal advice from the notice's content.
Error: *In diesem Land begrüßt man sich immer so. (states a personal observation as a universal rule)
Chapter Summary
Chapter 15 assessed the integration of Unit III's workplace, institutional, intercultural, and community systems: formal register in workplace and institutional communication, passive and impersonal constructions and genitive phrases in official notices, Konjunktiv II formulas for polite requests and advice, and clear, respectful narration of personal and intercultural experience. No new grammar was introduced; the chapter measured how well these systems work together under ordinary communicative pressure.

Answer Key
Listening Assessment — Comprehension Questions
- Example: "Es wäre auch hilfreich, wenn Sie mir kurz eine E-Mail schreiben könnten" — Konjunktiv II softens the request, making it a polite suggestion rather than a direct command.
Reading Assessment — Comprehension Questions
- Passive example: "wird verlangt" / "muss ... hochgeladen werden" — describes what is required without naming who requires it. Genitive example: "die Frist der Einreichung" — expresses the deadline that belongs to the submission process.
Formal Email Task — Model Answer
Mediation Task — Model Answer
English summary (model): The international office requires all international students to submit a current health insurance certificate, attached to the registration form and uploaded to the student portal, before the submission deadline. Applications that arrive after the deadline cannot be considered this semester. Questions about the certificate can be directed to the student advising office.
Speaking Assessment
Open production. Evaluate using the performance task criteria table above, with particular attention to narrative framing, the als/wenn distinction, and at least one polite Konjunktiv II form from the listening partner. Accept any natural, accurate response that meets these criteria.
Practical Performance Task
Open production across all four components. Evaluate holistically using the performance task criteria table: comprehension accuracy, formal register, mediation accuracy, Konjunktiv II use, narrative framing, and pronoun and clause control.
Looking Ahead
Was Sie nach Kapitel 15 können — What you can do after Chapter 15
You have now demonstrated the ability to move between formal, institutional, and personal registers within a single connected sequence of tasks: understanding workplace and official communication, writing a formal request, mediating information faithfully, and narrating personal experience respectfully. These integrated skills complete Unit III and prepare you for Unit IV, which turns to argumentation, hypothetical reasoning, and word formation.
