Argumentieren und Debattieren
Chapter Overview and Objectives
Chapter 16 opens Unit IV and turns from the integrated professional and civic tasks of Chapter 15 toward a new communicative demand: building an argument. Having spent Unit III narrating, explaining, and mediating information, you now learn to state a position, support it with reasons and evidence, acknowledge a counterargument, and respond to it without abandoning your own claim. This chapter introduces concessive and contrastive connectors such as obwohl, trotzdem, and während, together with sentence adverbs and stance markers that signal how strongly you hold a position. Modal particles that soften or sharpen spoken argument are introduced receptively. No earlier system is replaced; relative clauses, passive constructions, and Konjunktiv II from Unit III continue to support the arguments you build here.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- State a position clearly using appropriate stance markers.
- Support a claim with reasons and evidence in organized paragraphs.
- Use obwohl, trotzdem, and während accurately to concede a point or draw a contrast.
- Recognize common modal particles that soften or sharpen a spoken argument.
- Summarize an opposing view fairly before responding to it.
- Participate in a structured debate while maintaining a respectful, non-personal tone.
Opening Scenario
Some weeks after helping Selin with her university notice, Tobias joins a community discussion evening organized through his workplace, where colleagues and neighbors debate current public issues in a structured, moderated format. Tonight's topic is whether remote work should remain the default for office employees. Tobias has a clear opinion, but he also remembers that Frau Ecker, his supervisor from Chapter 15, has said more than once that some tasks in their office genuinely go better in person. As the discussion begins, Tobias has to decide how to present his own view honestly while acknowledging that his colleague's experience does not fully match his own.
- Review the vocabulary and grammar focus below.
- Study the model dialogue and complete the guided practice.
- Complete the Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing tasks in order.
- Finish with the Practical Performance Task, which integrates all components.

Grammar Focus: Concession and Contrast
Argument requires more than stacking claims; it requires acknowledging a point that seems to work against your position and showing why your position still stands, or contrasting two situations directly. German has three high-value tools for this: the subordinating conjunction obwohl, the connecting adverb trotzdem, and the subordinating conjunction während.
Form: obwohl is a subordinating conjunction. It sends the finite verb to the end of its clause, exactly like weil or dass, systems already active since Volume II.
Meaning: obwohl introduces a fact that seems to contradict the main clause, then the main clause states what is true anyway.
Use: obwohl-clauses can come before or after the main clause. When the obwohl-clause comes first, the main clause begins with the finite verb, following the V2 pattern already established.
- Obwohl viele Kollegen im Büro produktiver arbeiten, bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice. Although many colleagues work more productively in the office, I prefer working from home. obwohl + finite verb final (arbeiten) / main clause V2 (bevorzuge)
- Frau Ecker sagt, dass sie im Homeoffice weniger schafft, obwohl sie es eigentlich mag. Ms. Ecker says she gets less done working from home, although she actually likes it.
Form: trotzdem is a connecting adverb, not a subordinating conjunction. It occupies a sentence position and, like other fronted elements, is normally followed directly by the finite verb.
Meaning: trotzdem connects two independent statements, the second of which holds true despite the first.
Use: Because trotzdem is an adverb, it can occupy the front field (triggering inversion) or a later position in its own clause.
- Viele Kollegen arbeiten im Büro produktiver. Trotzdem bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice. Many colleagues work more productively in the office. Nevertheless, I prefer working from home. trotzdem (front field) + bevorzuge (finite verb, position 2) + ich (subject, position 3)
- Sie mag das Homeoffice eigentlich. Sie schafft dort trotzdem weniger. She actually likes working from home. She nevertheless gets less done there.
Form: während is a subordinating conjunction and also sends the finite verb to the end of its clause.
Meaning: während can express simultaneous time, a system already familiar, but in argumentation it more often expresses a direct contrast between two situations, comparable to English "whereas."
Use: Distinguish the temporal and contrastive uses by context; both are grammatically identical.
- Während einige Kollegen im Büro konzentrierter arbeiten, brauchen andere die Ruhe zu Hause. Whereas some colleagues work more focused in the office, others need the quiet of home.
Error: *Trotzdem viele Kollegen produktiver sind, bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice. (treats trotzdem as if it could send the verb to the end)
Correction: Obwohl viele Kollegen produktiver sind, bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice. — or, as two sentences: Viele Kollegen sind produktiver. Trotzdem bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice.
Stance Markers, Sentence Adverbs, and Modal Particles
Beyond connectors, arguments rely on words that signal how confidently or personally a speaker holds a position. This chapter activates a set of sentence adverbs for productive use and introduces modal particles receptively.
| Marker | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| meiner Meinung nach | frames a claim as personal opinion | Meiner Meinung nach sollte Homeoffice freiwillig bleiben. |
| allerdings | introduces a qualification or partial concession | Allerdings funktioniert das nicht in jedem Beruf. |
| tatsächlich | marks a claim as factually grounded, not merely felt | Tatsächlich zeigen mehrere Studien ähnliche Ergebnisse. |
| zweifellos | marks strong certainty | Zweifellos hat sich die Arbeitswelt verändert. |
Spoken German argument often includes small words such as ja, doch, eben, and halt, which soften or frame a claim without changing its literal content. You are not required to produce these accurately at this stage; recognize them as normal features of spoken debate.
Das ist doch offensichtlich. — "That's obvious, isn't it" (doch appeals to shared assumption rather than sharpening disagreement). Do not attempt to translate modal particles word-for-word; focus on the overall tone they create.
Model Dialogue
Setting: a moderated community discussion evening at Tobias's workplace. Context: colleague to colleague, semi-formal spoken register.
Guided Practice
Combine each pair of sentences using the connector indicated. Watch verb position carefully.
- Viele Studierende lernen lieber online. Manche vermissen den direkten Kontakt. (obwohl)
- Die Umweltbelastung durch Verkehr ist bekannt. Viele Menschen fahren weiterhin mit dem Auto zur Arbeit. (trotzdem)
- Manche Firmen setzen stark auf neue Technologien. Andere bleiben bei bewährten Methoden. (während)
- Soziale Medien verbinden Menschen weltweit. Sie können auch zu Missverständnissen führen. (obwohl)
Model answers appear in the Answer Key.
Listening Practice
Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following short statement aloud. Listen once for the overall stance, then again for the connectors used.
Kurzstatement — Listening Script
1. Welchen Standpunkt vertritt die sprechende Person?
2. Welches Gegenargument wird zugestanden?
3. Identify each connector (obwohl, während, trotzdem) and explain what each connects.
Speaking Practice: Structured Debate
Aufgabe: Eine Position vertreten und ein Gegenargument zugestehen
Work with a partner. Choose one topic below. One of you argues for a position; the other raises a fair objection, which the first speaker acknowledges before restating the position.
Themenvorschläge
- Homeoffice als Standard
- Digitale Werkzeuge in Schulen
- Auto versus öffentlicher Verkehr
- Soziale Medien und Gesellschaft
Sprecher/in A — Position
State a clear position using meiner Meinung nach, then acknowledge Partner B's objection using obwohl or trotzdem before restating your view.
Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria
- Clear initial position with an appropriate stance marker.
- Accurate use of at least one of obwohl, trotzdem, or während.
- Fair, non-dismissive acknowledgment of the counterargument.
- Respectful tone throughout; no personal attack.
Solo alternative: Record yourself stating a position, then voicing and acknowledging the strongest objection you can think of, before restating your view.
Reading Practice
2. Welche zwei Einschränkungen werden zugestanden?
3. Identify each use of obwohl, während, and trotzdem, and explain the relationship each expresses.
Writing Workshop
Write a short argument paragraph (six to eight sentences) on a topic of your choice from the list in the Speaking Practice section, or a similar public issue. State your position, give at least two supported reasons, acknowledge one fair counterargument, and restate your position.
- State your position clearly using a stance marker such as meiner Meinung nach or zweifellos.
- Give your first reason, supported by a concrete example.
- Give your second reason.
- Acknowledge a fair counterargument using obwohl, während, or trotzdem.
- Restate your position in one closing sentence.
Revision checklist:
- Does the paragraph state one clear position?
- Is at least one connector (obwohl, trotzdem, während) used accurately, with correct verb position?
- Is the counterargument represented fairly, not dismissively?
- Are nouns capitalized and cases marked correctly?
Culture and Communication
In many German-speaking workplaces, classrooms, and public forums, structured disagreement is treated as a normal and valued part of reaching a good decision, not as a sign of conflict between the people involved. Acknowledging a colleague's valid point, as Tobias does with Frau Ecker, is not a concession of defeat; it strengthens the credibility of the speaker's own position.
How directly people voice disagreement in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland varies by region, institution, generation, and individual, not by one national style. Avoid assuming that any single debate style, direct or indirect, represents all German-speaking communities.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: *Obwohl viele Kollegen produktiver sind im Büro, bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice. (verb not placed at the end of the obwohl-clause)
Correction: Obwohl viele Kollegen im Büro produktiver sind, bevorzuge ich das Homeoffice.
Error: *Das stimmt einfach nicht. as a response to a colleague's genuine experience.
Correction: Das verstehe ich, allerdings sehe ich das etwas anders, weil ...
Error: *Homeoffice ist eindeutig besser für alle. stated as an objective claim.
Correction: Meiner Meinung nach ist Homeoffice für viele Menschen von Vorteil, obwohl das nicht für jeden gilt.
Chapter Summary
Chapter 16 introduced the language of argument: stating a position with appropriate stance markers, supporting it with reasons and evidence, and using obwohl, trotzdem, and während to concede a point or draw a contrast without abandoning the position. Modal particles were introduced receptively as a feature of natural spoken debate. Relative clauses, passive constructions, and Konjunktiv II from Unit III continued to support the discussion, description, and polite framing that argument requires.
