Economics, Organizations, and Work · Speak and Write German: Professional, Academic, and Cultural Communication · Volume IV, Chapter 8

Chapter Overview and Objectives

Chapter 8 moves Tobias from civic administration into the language of organizations, budgets, and workplace structure. His research institute has just received an internal report summarizing the past year's budget and staffing, and his supervisor asks him to read it, summarize the key findings for a colleague who has not seen it, and draft a short memo with a recommendation. Business and organizational German relies heavily on dense compound nouns and nominalizations — verbs turned into abstract nouns — to compress information efficiently, and this chapter develops both systems productively for the first time alongside continued work with the genitive, passive, and impersonal man. Learners read an accessible internal report, practice data commentary language, and write a memo that summarizes findings and proposes a next step — without offering financial advice.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Read a short business or organizational report and identify its key figures and findings.
  2. Recognize and interpret dense compound nouns common in economic and organizational vocabulary.
  3. Form nominalizations from familiar verbs and adjectives to describe processes and outcomes.
  4. Continue producing the genitive case and passive/impersonal constructions in a new domain.
  5. Use data commentary language to describe trends, comparisons, and changes.
  6. Write a short memo that summarizes a report and proposes one recommendation.

Opening Scenario

Tobias's research institute has circulated its annual internal report, which summarizes the past year's budget, staffing changes, and project spending across departments. His supervisor, Frau Nowak, asks him to read the report before Friday's team meeting, prepare a short spoken summary for a colleague returning from leave who has not seen it, and write a one-paragraph memo highlighting one finding and one recommendation for the coming year. Tobias has read plenty of narrative German by now, but the report's dense compound nouns and nominal style — sentences built around abstract nouns rather than verbs — take some getting used to.

  1. Review the vocabulary for organizations, budgets, staffing, and reports.
  2. Study how nominalization and compound nouns compress information in the model dialogue and reading passage.
  3. Complete the Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing tasks in order.
  4. Finish with the Practical Performance Task, which asks you to summarize a report and write a memo with a recommendation.

Aussprache

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Note — Stress in Long Compounds

Long organizational compounds such as der Haushaltsplan or die Geschäftsführung carry primary stress on the first element, with lighter stress on later components: HAUShaltsplan, GEschäftsführung. When reading a dense sentence full of such compounds aloud, resist the urge to stress every syllable equally; identify the first element of each compound and let your voice lead from there, pausing briefly between major noun phrases so the listener can process one compound before the next begins.

Grammatik

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter develops two systems that make German organizational prose distinctive: dense compound nouns, now practiced more independently after their introduction earlier in the volume, and nominalization, which turns a verb or adjective into an abstract noun to support a more compact, nominal style. The genitive case, passive voice, and impersonal man, all introduced in Chapter 7, continue to develop here in a new domain.

Building Block — Turning a Verb into a Noun (Nominalization)
Verbstamm + -ung / Infinitiv als Neutrum
Many German verbs form an abstract feminine noun with the suffix -ung, and almost any infinitive can function directly as a neuter noun. Nominalization lets a writer describe a process or event as a "thing" rather than an action, which is common in reports, summaries, and formal analysis.

einstellen → die Einstellung

to hire → the hiring

die Ausgaben steigen → der Anstieg der Ausgaben

expenditures are rising → the increase in expenditures

das Budget planen → die Planung des Budgets

to plan the budget → the planning of the budget

Grammar Note — Reading Dense Compound Nouns

Organizational and economic German favors compact compound nouns over longer phrases: der Haushaltsplan ("the budget plan") instead of "the plan for the household budget," or die Personalabteilung ("the personnel department") instead of "the department for personnel matters." To read a new compound, find the final noun, which determines gender and core meaning, then work backward through the earlier elements, which narrow or specify that meaning. This chapter asks you to interpret such compounds in reading, not to invent new ones freely.

Grammar Note — Data Commentary Language

Describing a trend or comparison in a report calls for a small set of recurring patterns: steigen ("to rise"), sinken ("to fall"), sich verdoppeln ("to double"), im Vergleich zu ("in comparison to"), and im Vergleich zum Vorjahr ("compared to the previous year"). These expressions often combine with the nominalizations and genitive phrases above: der Anstieg der Ausgaben im Vergleich zum Vorjahr ("the increase in expenditures compared to the previous year").

  • Die Ausgaben der Personalabteilung sind im Vergleich zum Vorjahr leicht gestiegen. The personnel department's expenditures have risen slightly compared to the previous year. genitive noun phrase + compound + comparison
  • Der Anstieg wird vor allem durch zwei neue Einstellungen im letzten Quartal erklärt. The increase is explained mainly by two new hires in the last quarter. nominalization + passive-style explanation with werden
  • Man erwartet für das kommende Jahr einen leichten Rückgang der Reisekosten. A slight decline in travel costs is expected for the coming year. impersonal man + genitive + compound noun
Frequent Confusion — Inventing Compounds Instead of Using Established Ones

Error: *die Geld-Ausgeben-Abteilung strings English-style noun phrases together instead of using the established German compound.

Correction: die Finanzabteilung — established organizational compounds should be learned and verified as vocabulary items, not built freely by translating an English noun chain word for word.

Modelldialog

Model Dialogue

Setting: Tobias's office, two days before the team meeting. Context: Tobias and Frau Nowak look over the annual report together before he prepares his summary.

Tobias und Frau Nowak besprechen den Jahresbericht des Instituts.
Frau Nowak: Haben Sie schon einen Blick auf den Jahresbericht geworfen? Have you already looked at the annual report?
Tobias: Ja, aber die Sprache ist ziemlich dicht. Was genau bedeutet der Anstieg der Ausgaben im Vergleich zum Vorjahr? Yes, but the language is quite dense. What exactly does the increase in expenditures compared to the previous year mean?
Frau Nowak: Das bezieht sich hauptsächlich auf die Personalabteilung. Zwei neue Mitarbeiterinnen wurden im letzten Quartal eingestellt. That refers mainly to the personnel department. Two new employees were hired in the last quarter.
Tobias: Verstehe. Und der Rückgang der Reisekosten — worauf ist der zurückzuführen? I see. And the decline in travel costs — what is that due to?
Frau Nowak: Man hat im letzten Jahr mehr Konferenzen online abgehalten. Für Ihre Zusammenfassung reicht es, beide Punkte kurz zu nennen. More conferences were held online last year. For your summary, it's enough to mention both points briefly.
Tobias: Gut, dann schreibe ich noch ein kurzes Memo mit einer Empfehlung für das kommende Jahr. Good, then I'll also write a short memo with a recommendation for the coming year.

Guided Practice

Form the nominalization of each verb, then use it in a genitive phrase following the pattern given.

  1. einstellen → die ______________________ ; die ______________________ zweier neuer Mitarbeiterinnen
  2. steigen → der ______________________ ; der ______________________ der Ausgaben
  3. planen → die ______________________ ; die ______________________ des Budgets
  4. Rewrite one of your genitive phrases as a full sentence using impersonal man or the passive voice.

Model answers appear in the Answer Key at the end of the chapter.

Hörverstehen

Listening Practice

Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following short passage aloud. Listen once for the general trend, then again for the specific figures mentioned.

Kurzansage — Listening Script

2. Wodurch wird der Rückgang der Reisekosten erklärt?

3. Identify the sentence that describes the expectation for the coming year, and summarize the condition attached to it.

Sprechen

Speaking Practice

Aufgabe: Den Bericht zusammenfassen

Working with a partner or recording solo, role-play a short conversation in which a colleague explains the annual report to someone who has just returned from leave and has not read it.

Rolle: Tobias

  • Summarize the increase in personnel expenditures and its cause.
  • Summarize the decline in travel costs and its cause.
  • Mention the expectation for the coming year.
  • Offer to send the full report by email.

Rolle: Kollege/Kollegin (aus dem Urlaub zurück)

  • Ask for clarification about one figure or trend.
  • Ask what the recommendation for next year might be.
  • Thank Tobias for the summary.

Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria

  • Both figures (personnel expenditures, travel costs) are summarized clearly.
  • At least one nominalization is used correctly.
  • At least one genitive phrase and one passive or impersonal man sentence are used correctly.
  • The exchange remains natural and does not offer financial advice.
  • Comprehensible, natural pronunciation and pacing, including compound stress.

Solo alternative: Record both roles yourself, pausing between turns, or record only the Tobias role as a short monologue summarizing the report.

Leseverstehen

Reading Practice

2. Warum sind die Reisekosten gesunken?

3. Identify the sentence that explains when a decision about additional staff will be made, and summarize what condition precedes that decision.

Schreiben

Writing Workshop

Write a short internal memo based on the Reading Practice report, summarizing one finding and proposing one recommendation for the coming year.

  1. Open with a brief line stating the memo's purpose.
  2. Summarize one finding from the report, using a nominalization and a genitive phrase.
  3. Explain the likely cause of that finding using a passive or impersonal man construction.
  4. Propose one specific recommendation for the coming year.
  5. Review your text against the checklist below.

Revision checklist:

  • Is the purpose of the memo stated clearly in the opening?
  • Does the memo include at least one correctly formed nominalization?
  • Does at least one noun phrase use the genitive correctly?
  • Does at least one sentence use the passive voice or impersonal man correctly?
  • Does the memo avoid offering financial advice beyond the scope of the report?

Culture and Communication

Culture and Communication — This Is Not Financial Advice

The budget figures, percentages, and organizational structure described in this chapter are constructed for language practice and illustrate a common pattern in internal reporting; they are not drawn from any real institution and should not be treated as a model for real financial decisions. Any real organizational or financial question should be directed to a qualified professional and to current, verified information rather than to a textbook example.

Culture and Communication — DACH Business Vocabulary Varies

Organizational and business vocabulary varies across German-speaking countries: Austrian usage sometimes prefers die Firma where a German speaker might say das Unternehmen, and job titles, reporting structures, and workplace conventions differ by country, sector, and institution. This chapter's vocabulary reflects common German usage; learners working with Austrian or Swiss colleagues should expect some institutional and lexical variation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overusing a verb where a nominalization is more natural in reports

Error: *Man hat mehr Leute eingestellt, deshalb die Ausgaben sind gestiegen. strings two clauses together in a way that sounds like spoken narration rather than report style, and misplaces the verb.

Correction: Der Anstieg der Ausgaben ist auf die Einstellung neuer Mitarbeiterinnen zurückzuführen. — nominal style compresses the same information into a single, well-formed sentence typical of report writing.

Building compounds by translating English noun chains

Error: *der Geld-Ausgeben-Anstieg translates "the money-spending increase" word for word instead of using an established German compound.

Correction: der Anstieg der Ausgaben — use a genitive phrase or a verified compound rather than inventing a new one by stringing English nouns together.

Offering financial advice in a language exercise

Error: Treating this chapter's memo task as an opportunity to recommend a real financial decision to a real organization.

Correction: Use the chapter's constructed report to practice summarizing and recommending language; direct any real budget or financial question to a qualified professional.

Chapter Summary

Chapter 8 moved learners from civic administration into the compact, nominal style of organizational and economic German. Nominalization became productive for the first time, allowing verbs and adjectives to function as abstract nouns in reports and summaries, while dense compound nouns were practiced more independently in reading. The genitive case, passive voice, and impersonal man, introduced in Chapter 7, developed further in this new domain, supported by a small set of data commentary expressions for describing trends and comparisons. Tobias's task of summarizing an internal report and writing a memo with a recommendation, without offering financial advice, connected listening, speaking, reading, and writing around one realistic workplace situation.

Looking Ahead

Was Sie nach Kapitel 8 können — What you can do after Chapter 8

You can now read a short business or organizational report and identify its key figures, interpret dense compound nouns, form nominalizations from familiar verbs and adjectives, and write a short memo that summarizes a finding and proposes a recommendation, all without offering financial advice. These skills prepare you for the more explanatory, process-oriented register of Chapter 9.

Chapter 9: Technik, Wissenschaft und Erklären

Chapter 9 shifts from organizational reporting to technology, science, and explanation. It develops relative, passive, and process structures further alongside specialized compounds, and asks learners to read a technical overview and explain a process for an educated audience.
