Wiederholung 2: Fachbericht
Chapter Overview and Objectives
Chapter 10 closes Unit II by asking Tobias to bring together everything the unit has developed: reading a research-oriented source critically (Chapter 6), writing a source-based section with proper attribution (Chapter 7), framing a decision in strategic, risk-aware language for leadership (Chapter 8), and explaining a specialized system precisely to two different audiences without inventing terminology (Chapter 9). Frau Vogt now asks him to produce a single Fachbericht — a specialized report — that documents the pilot's technical basis, its organizational rationale, and its practical rollout, and then to defend the report's choices orally in front of a small review panel. This chapter does not introduce new grammar or vocabulary systems. It assesses whether Tobias, and the learner working through this chapter, can integrate the nominal style, passive and impersonal process description, Konjunktiv I reporting, source discipline, strategic register, and audience adaptation that Chapters 6 through 9 activated.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Integrate academic, organizational, and technical registers within a single specialized report.
- Summarize a source responsibly using Konjunktiv I reporting and correct attribution.
- Describe a process and its rollout using passive, impersonal, and imperative style as appropriate to each section.
- Use a glossary consistently across a report, a briefing, and a question-and-answer exchange.
- Present a specialized report orally and defend its terminology, scope, and conclusions under questioning.
- Distinguish evidence-based claims from recommendations that exceed the report's scope.
- Revise a specialized report for register consistency, source discipline, and audience fit.
Opening Scenario
Frau Vogt tells Tobias that the pilot's steering committee wants one consolidated document rather than four separate memos: a specialized report covering the research basis for the new communication routine, the organizational reasoning behind adopting it, and the technical configuration required to run it. Tobias will submit the written report in advance and then present a short briefing to the committee, who will ask follow-up questions drawn from any section of the report. He is reminded that the committee includes people from research, operations, and IT, so the report's register must shift deliberately from section to section while a single glossary keeps its terminology consistent throughout.
- Reread your Chapter 7 source section, Chapter 8 strategic memo, and Chapter 9 glossary and technical notes.
- Draft a single Fachbericht that opens with the research basis, moves to the organizational rationale, and closes with the technical configuration.
- Prepare a short oral briefing that summarizes the report's key points for a mixed audience.
- Anticipate likely committee questions and prepare concise, evidence-based answers.
Cumulative Vocabulary Review
No new vocabulary is introduced in this chapter. The report, briefing, and question-and-answer task draw on the cumulative terminology of Chapters 6 through 9. Review the four domains below before drafting.
Aus Kapitel 6 — Academic Reading
- die Quelle, die Quellen — source
- die Methode, die Methoden — method
- der Befund, die Befunde — finding
- die Einschränkung, die Einschränkungen — limitation
Aus Kapitel 7 — Research Writing
- die Zusammenfassung, die Zusammenfassungen — summary
- das Argument, die Argumente — argument
- der Zusammenhalt (no common plural) — cohesion
- zitieren, zufolge, laut — to cite; according to; according to
Aus Kapitel 8 — Strategy and Leadership
- das Risiko, die Risiken — risk
- die Empfehlung, die Empfehlungen — recommendation
- die Priorität, die Prioritäten — priority
- die Kurzübersicht, die Kurzübersichten — executive summary
Aus Kapitel 9 — Technical Communication
- der Begriff, die Begriffe — term, concept
- das Glossar, die Glossare — glossary
- die Einstellung, die Einstellungen — setting, configuration
- die Zielgruppe, die Zielgruppen — target audience
All active nouns are given with article and plural where a plural is established. This chapter assesses controlled recall and consistent use of these terms rather than presenting new lexical items.
Delivery Focus: Reading Aloud Under Questions
A briefing followed by open questions puts more pressure on spontaneous pronunciation than a rehearsed presentation does. Keep the same priorities that have applied across the volume: maintain clear long and short vowel contrasts, keep final devoicing consistent even when speaking quickly, and slow down deliberately before a long technical compound rather than rushing through it and losing the listener.
When a committee member interrupts with a question mid-sentence, it is better to finish the current clause simply and briefly rather than abandoning it mid-word, since an unfinished German clause with the verb still pending is harder for a listener to parse than a short, complete one.
Grammar Review: Nominal Style, Passive, and Source Language
No new grammar system is activated in this chapter. The review below consolidates the systems from Chapters 6 through 9 that the Fachbericht must combine within a single document.
Shifting Register Section by Section
A Fachbericht that moves from research background to organizational rationale to technical configuration should shift its nominal density and its verb style deliberately rather than staying uniform throughout. A research section may use Konjunktiv I to report a source's claims; an organizational section may foreground risk and recommendation language; a technical section may rely on passive or imperative process description depending on whether it specifies or instructs.
Keeping Source, Opinion, and Fact Distinct
- Laut der Studie ... / Die Studie zeige, dass ... marks a claim as belonging to a cited source, not to the report's author.
- Das Team empfiehlt ... / Es wird vorgeschlagen, ... marks a recommendation as the report's own position, distinct from the source.
- Die Einstellung wird ... verwaltet. marks a plain statement of how a system functions, without evaluative content.
- A report that blends these three voices without signaling the shift asks the reader to do work the writer should have done.
Model Text: Fachbericht Excerpt
A short excerpt from Tobias's Fachbericht showing the transition from the research section into the organizational section.
Guided Practice
- Identify the Konjunktiv I form in the "Forschung" excerpt and explain what it signals about the source of the claim.
- Find the sentence in the "Organisation" excerpt that functions as a recommendation, and identify the language that marks it as a recommendation rather than a fact.
- Find the passive construction in the "Technik" excerpt and rewrite it as an active sentence with an explicit subject.
- Explain, in one or two sentences, why the report keeps the limitation from the "Forschung" section visible instead of dropping it once the "Organisation" section makes its recommendation.
- List every glossary term from Chapter 9 that reappears in this excerpt.
Listening Assessment
Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud. This is an assessment task: listen only twice before answering.
1. How does Frau Vogt distinguish the report's first part from its second part?
2. What does the third part of the report describe?
3. Was bittet Frau Vogt die Ausschussmitglieder, beim Nachfragen zu tun?
Speaking Assessment: Briefing and Q&A
Aufgabe: Bericht vorstellen und Fragen beantworten
Working with a partner, a small group, or by recording yourself, deliver a short oral briefing summarizing your written Fachbericht (see the Writing Assessment below), then answer at least four follow-up questions drawn from different sections of the report.
Rolle: Berichterstattende Person
- Summarize the research basis, the recommendation, and the technical configuration in under two minutes.
- Answer each question by identifying which part of the report it concerns before responding.
- Distinguish clearly between what the source study claims and what the report itself recommends.
Rolle: Ausschussmitglied
- Ask at least one question about the research basis, one about the organizational recommendation, and one about the technical configuration.
- Ask for clarification if a glossary term is used inconsistently.
- Ask what would happen if the pilot's limitation (uneven acceptance) actually occurred.
Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria
- Summarizes all three sections of the report clearly and in appropriate order.
- Keeps source claims, recommendations, and technical facts distinguishable in spoken delivery.
- Answers questions with evidence from the report rather than improvised claims.
- Uses glossary terms consistently between the written report and the oral briefing.
- Maintains intelligible pronunciation and recovers smoothly from interruption.
Solo alternative: Record your briefing, then write four likely committee questions and record your answers to each, checking afterward that your terminology matches your written report.
Reading Assessment
2. How does the rapporteur (Berichterstatterin) respond to the question about representativeness, and what does this reveal about how she uses the report's own limitation section?
3. Based strictly on the text, who is responsible for handling an error message during the pilot phase?
Writing Assessment: Der Fachbericht
Produce the specialized report Frau Vogt requested, integrating the systems developed across Chapters 6 through 9 into three clearly marked sections, each shifting register appropriately.
Aufgabe — Task
Die drei Abschnitte — The Three Sections
- Forschung: summarize a source's claim using Konjunktiv I, and state at least one limitation.
- Organisation: state a recommendation distinct from the source's claim, and name the main risk.
- Technik: describe the configuration using passive or impersonal style, supported by a glossary.
- Reread your Chapter 7 source section, Chapter 8 memo, and Chapter 9 glossary before drafting.
- Draft the Forschung section, keeping the source's claim and its limitation clearly marked as belonging to the source.
- Draft the Organisation section, marking your recommendation as the report's own position.
- Draft the Technik section using passive or impersonal process style, reusing your Chapter 9 glossary terms exactly.
- Add a short combined glossary listing every specialized term used across all three sections.
- Reread the full report and confirm that source claims, recommendations, and technical facts remain distinguishable throughout.
- Revise for register consistency within each section and terminological consistency across all three.
Revision checklist:
- Does the Forschung section mark the source's claim with Konjunktiv I or an equivalent reporting structure?
- Does the Organisation section state a recommendation that is clearly distinct from the source's claim?
- Does the Technik section use passive or impersonal style consistently, supported by a verified glossary?
- Does every glossary term appear identically across all three sections?
- Have I stated any conclusion or recommendation that the evidence in the report does not actually support?
Culture and Communication
In German-speaking professional and academic settings, a report or briefing that openly names its own limitations is generally regarded as more credible, not less, than one that presents a confident conclusion without qualification. A committee member asking about representativeness, as in the reading excerpt above, is a routine and expected part of reviewing a specialized report, not a challenge to be deflected.
When a question exceeds what the report's evidence can support, a well-prepared presenter says so directly rather than improvising an answer that sounds confident but is not grounded in the material. This applies equally to legal, financial, medical, or technical follow-up questions that arise unexpectedly during a briefing; naming the boundary of one's own report is part of professional communication, not a weakness in it.
Common Mistakes to Recheck
Error: A learner writes "Kürzere Kommunikationswege verbessern die Reaktionszeit, deshalb führen wir die Routine ein" as one flat statement, without marking which part comes from the source and which part is the report's own decision.
Correction: Separate the two voices explicitly, e.g. "Die Studie zeige, dass ...; das Team empfiehlt daher, ..."
Error: A learner uses "Zugriffsberechtigungsstatus" in the technical section but switches to "Zugriffsstatus" or "Berechtigungsstatus" elsewhere in the same report.
Correction: Check every technical term against the Chapter 9 glossary before submitting, and use one fixed form throughout.
Error: A learner, asked whether the pilot will succeed company-wide, answers with a confident prediction the report's evidence does not support.
Correction: State plainly that the report's evidence covers only the pilot scope, and that a company-wide judgment would require further data.
Chapter Summary
Chapter 10 assessed Tobias's ability to integrate the academic, organizational, and technical communication developed across Chapters 6 through 9 into a single specialized report: summarizing a source responsibly with Konjunktiv I, stating an organizational recommendation distinct from that source, describing a technical configuration with passive or impersonal style and a consistent glossary, and defending all three sections orally under unplanned committee questioning. No new grammar or vocabulary system was introduced; the chapter's purpose was consolidation and demonstrated control.
Chapter Review
Before moving to Chapter 11, confirm that you can:
Analyse
- identify which voice — source, recommendation, or technical fact — a given sentence in a report represents;
- recognize Konjunktiv I reporting and passive process description within a specialized report;
- identify whether a report's conclusion is supported by its own stated evidence; and
- check whether glossary terms are used consistently across a multi-section document.
Produktion
- write a source-based section using correct attribution and Konjunktiv I;
- write an organizational recommendation clearly distinct from a cited source;
- write a technical section using passive or impersonal style with a consistent glossary; and
- present and defend a specialized report orally under unplanned questioning.
Practical Performance Task
Kapitel 10 — Prüfungsaufgabe
Fachbericht, Briefing und Fragerunde — Specialized Report, Briefing, and Q&A
Complete the three-section Fachbericht described in the Writing Assessment above, then deliver the oral briefing and answer committee questions as described in the Speaking Assessment.
1. Forschung zusammenfassen
Summarize a source's claim and its limitation using Konjunktiv I.
2. Empfehlung begründen
State an organizational recommendation and its main risk.
3. Technik beschreiben
Describe the configuration with passive style and a glossary.
4. Bericht verteidigen
Present the briefing and answer committee questions from all three sections.
| Criterion | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Source discipline | Source claims are attributed and marked with Konjunktiv I or an equivalent reporting structure |
| Voice separation | Source claim, organizational recommendation, and technical fact remain distinguishable throughout |
| Process style | Passive or impersonal style is used consistently in the technical section |
| Terminological consistency | Glossary terms match exactly across the written report and the oral briefing |
| Scope discipline | Conclusions and answers stay within what the report's evidence actually supports |
| Oral defense | Committee questions are answered with reference to the correct section of the report |
Developing
Sections are present but voices blend together, or a glossary term shifts between sections.Solid
All three voices stay distinguishable, terminology is consistent, and questions are answered within scope with minor lapses.Strong
Register shifts deliberately and precisely between sections, evidence and limitation remain visible throughout, and committee questions are answered confidently and accurately from the correct section.Answer Key
Guided Practice
- "zeige" is a Konjunktiv I form, signaling that the improvement in reaction time is the study's claim, not a fact the report author asserts directly.
- "empfiehlt das Team einen begrenzten Pilotversuch" is the recommendation; "empfiehlt" marks it explicitly as the team's own position rather than a finding.
- "wird ... zentral ... verwaltet" is the passive construction; an active rewrite could be "Die IT-Abteilung verwaltet den Zugriffsberechtigungsstatus jedes Teammitglieds zentral in der Benutzeroberflächeneinstellung."
- Open production; a good answer notes that keeping the limitation visible lets the reader judge how much weight the recommendation can bear, rather than presenting the pilot decision as more certain than the evidence allows.
- "Zugriffsberechtigungsstatus," "Benutzeroberflächeneinstellung," and "Fehlermeldung" all reappear from Chapter 9.
Listening Assessment — Comprehension Questions
- The first part summarizes an external study without altering its findings; the second part contains the team's own assessment and recommendation.
- The third part describes how the system is technically set up.
Reading Assessment — Comprehension Questions
- She points directly to the report's own stated limitation rather than denying or minimizing the concern, showing that the limitation section functions as a genuine tool for answering scope-related questions.
- The IT department (die IT-Abteilung) is responsible, as stated in the technical part of the report.
Speaking and Writing
Open production. Evaluate using the performance task criteria table and rubric scale above, with particular attention to voice separation, terminological consistency, and whether oral answers stay within the evidence the written report actually provides.
Independent Study Tools
Für Selbstlerner
- Reread your own Chapter 6 through 9 writing tasks and mark, in each, which sentences are source claims, which are your own conclusions, and which are plain technical statements.
- Ask a study partner to play a skeptical committee member and press you with at least one out-of-scope question.
- Compare your Fachbericht glossary against your Chapter 9 glossary and correct any drift in terminology.
Selbstüberprüfung
- Can I point to the exact sentence in my report that marks a claim as belonging to the source rather than to me?
- Did I answer every practice question using only what my report's evidence supports?
- Would a listener be able to tell, without seeing the text, which section of my briefing they were hearing?
Looking Ahead
Was Sie nach Kapitel 10 können — What you can do after Chapter 10
You can now integrate source-based research writing, organizational recommendation, and technical process description into a single specialized report; keep source claims, recommendations, and technical facts distinguishable across a long document; and defend that report orally under unplanned questioning while staying within your evidence. Chapter 11 moves from specialized professional prose into literary and essayistic prose, where voice, rhythm, and interpretation take on a more personal and stylistic character.
