Portfolio und Fachspur
Chapter Overview and Objectives
Chapter 19 asks learners to step back from single tasks and assemble a specialized portfolio: a small, coherent collection of work in one domain, revised and presented with commentary. Tobias has decided to build his portfolio around the process-change project that carried him through Chapters 17 and 18 — the dictionary and valency work, the precision editing, and the debate at the internal forum. Frau Arslan now asks him to gather this work into a short portfolio with a glossary, a brief written commentary on his choices, and a two-minute oral presentation. No new grammar system is activated in this chapter. Instead, learners consolidate genre control, domain vocabulary, and editing skill already active from earlier chapters, and practice explaining and defending their own language choices in a specialized track of their own selection.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Select and justify a specialized domain for a short language portfolio.
- Assemble a coherent portfolio of revised work, including a glossary of domain vocabulary.
- Write a brief commentary explaining and justifying key language and genre choices.
- Apply genre-specific conventions consistently across multiple portfolio artifacts.
- Present a portfolio orally, summarizing its contents and revision process.
- Identify remaining gaps in domain vocabulary or accuracy and describe a plan to address them.
Opening Scenario
After the forum, Frau Arslan tells Tobias, "Das war überzeugend. Könnten Sie das Ganze — die Recherche, die Korrespondenz, die Rede — zu einer kleinen Mappe zusammenstellen? Mit einem kurzen Kommentar und einem Glossar." Tobias realizes that his process-change project already contains most of what a portfolio needs: a briefing note, correspondence, speaking notes, and a glossary of terms he has checked for valency and register. What remains is to select the strongest pieces, revise them once more, explain his choices in a short written commentary, and prepare a brief oral summary for anyone who did not follow the whole project.
- Select three or four pieces of prior work that best represent the domain and revise each once more.
- Compile a short glossary of the domain's key terms, including gender, valency, and register notes.
- Write a brief commentary explaining the portfolio's scope, choices, and remaining limitations.
- Prepare and deliver a short oral summary of the portfolio and its revision process.
Core Vocabulary: Portfolio and Genre Control
This chapter activates vocabulary for describing, assembling, and presenting a specialized portfolio. These items are introduced for productive use in commentary, glossaries, and oral presentation.
Mappe und Aufbau — Portfolio and Structure
- die Mappe, die Mappen — the portfolio, folder
- der Fachbereich, die Fachbereiche — the specialized field/domain
- eine Auswahl treffen — to make a selection
- der Kommentar, die Kommentare — the commentary
- überarbeiten — to revise
- das Glossar, die Glossare — the glossary
Reflexion und Präsentation — Reflection and Presentation
- eine Entscheidung begründen — to justify a decision
- eine Lücke feststellen — to identify a gap
- der Entwicklungsstand, die Entwicklungsstände — the stage of development
- zusammenstellen — to compile, put together
- sich auf etwas beziehen (+ Akkusativ) — to refer to something
- ein Fazit ziehen — to draw a conclusion
The verbs eingehen auf (+ Akkusativ) and widersprechen (+ Dativ) from Chapter 18, and the valency and word-formation vocabulary from Chapter 16 and 17, are review items here; they recur as learners select and justify vocabulary rather than being retaught.
Delivery Focus: Presenting a Portfolio Aloud
A portfolio presentation differs from a debate contribution in one important way: the speaker is summarizing a body of prior work rather than defending a position in real time. Use a calm, even pace, a clear falling pitch at the end of each summarized item, and a brief pause before moving from one artifact to the next, so a listener can follow which piece of the portfolio is being described at any moment.
This builds directly on the discourse intonation and presentation delivery developed in Chapter 18; no new sound or stress rule is introduced here, only its application to a longer, multi-part oral summary.
Language Patterns: Commentary and Justification
This chapter does not introduce a new grammar system. It consolidates connectors, valency-aware vocabulary, and nominal style already active from earlier chapters, applying them to the reflective genre of portfolio commentary.
Structuring a Portfolio Commentary
Justifying a Selection
A portfolio commentary must do more than list its contents; it must explain why each piece was chosen. Useful patterns include "Ich habe diesen Text aufgenommen, weil ..." and "Diese Rede zeigt, dass ..." For example: "Ich habe die Redenotizen aus Kapitel 18 aufgenommen, weil sie zeigen, wie ich unter Zeitdruck präzise auf einen Einwand eingehen konnte." ("I included the speaking notes from Chapter 18 because they show how I was able to address an objection precisely under time pressure.") This recycles the subordinate-clause connector weil and the verb eingehen auf from Chapter 18, now applied to self-evaluation rather than live debate.
Naming a Remaining Gap
An honest commentary names at least one remaining gap rather than presenting the portfolio as flawless: "Eine Lücke, die ich noch feststelle, ist ..." or "Bei Fachbegriffen aus dem Bereich X bin ich mir noch nicht ganz sicher." As in Chapter 16, any usage or frequency claim about a term should be checked against a dictionary or corpus rather than stated with false confidence; the commentary should reflect that discipline rather than overstate the learner's expertise.
Model Text: A Portfolio Consultation
A short original exchange between Tobias and Frau Arslan, written for this course, continuing directly from Chapter 18.
This exchange models the honest, specific self-assessment expected in the Writing Workshop and Performance Task below.
Guided Practice
- Choose a specialized domain for your own portfolio and write one sentence stating it, using "Ich habe mich auf ... konzentriert, weil ..."
- Select one piece of your own prior work and write one sentence justifying its inclusion with "Ich habe diesen Text aufgenommen, weil ..."
- Write one glossary entry for a domain term of your choice, including gender, plural, and valency where relevant.
- Write one sentence naming a remaining gap, using "Eine Lücke, die ich noch feststelle, ist ..."
- Write a one-sentence conclusion for your commentary using "Als Fazit lässt sich sagen, dass ..."
Listening Practice
Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following short passage aloud. Listen twice before answering.
Was eine gute Mappe zeigt — Listening Script
1. According to the passage, what should a good portfolio show besides finished texts?
2. What does the passage say learners should do regarding gaps in their competence, rather than acting as if their language ability is already complete?
3. Warum ist ein Glossar mit Genus, Valenz und Register laut dem Text auch für andere Leserinnen und Leser nützlich?
Speaking Practice: Presenting the Portfolio
Aufgabe: Die Mappe vorstellen
Working with a partner or by recording yourself, deliver a two-minute oral summary of your portfolio, then answer at least one follow-up question about a choice you made or a gap you identified.
Rolle: Verfasserin/Verfasser
- Name your specialized domain and briefly explain why you chose it.
- Summarize two or three pieces of work included in the portfolio and why each was selected.
- Name at least one remaining gap and briefly describe a plan to address it.
Rolle: Zuhörerin/Zuhörer
- Listen for a clear statement of the domain and the selection choices.
- Ask one specific follow-up question about a piece of work or a glossary term.
- Note whether the speaker names a gap honestly rather than avoiding the question.
Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria
- States the specialized domain and rationale clearly at the start.
- Summarizes portfolio contents concisely, using accurate domain vocabulary.
- Justifies at least one selection choice using a connector such as weil.
- Names at least one remaining gap honestly and specifically.
- Uses calm, evenly paced delivery appropriate to a reflective summary rather than a live debate.
Solo alternative: Record your two-minute summary, then write out and answer one follow-up question you anticipate a listener would ask.
Reading Practice: A Portfolio Commentary
1. What domain does the commentary focus on, and what three text types does it mention?
2. Warum hat der Verfasser die Redenotizen aus Kapitel 18 in die Mappe aufgenommen?
3. What gap does the writer identify, and why has he marked certain terms with a question mark in the glossary?
4. Identify the connector used to justify a selection choice in the second sentence, and state what type of clause it introduces.
Writing Workshop: Assembling the Portfolio
Assemble a short specialized portfolio of your own (three to four revised pieces of work, a short glossary, and a commentary of about 120 to 180 words), based on the structure and language patterns introduced in this chapter.
Aufgabe — Task
Stellen Sie eine kleine Sprachmappe zu einem Fachbereich Ihrer Wahl zusammen. Wählen Sie drei bis vier überarbeitete Texte aus früheren Kapiteln oder eigenen Projekten aus, erstellen Sie ein kurzes Glossar mit Genus, Valenz und Register, und schreiben Sie einen Kommentar, der Ihre Auswahl begründet und mindestens eine verbleibende Lücke benennt.
Stilistische Ziele — Stylistic Goals
- Kohärenter Fachbereich: ensure all selected pieces genuinely relate to one specialized domain.
- Begründete Auswahl: justify each selection with a connector such as weil rather than simply listing titles.
- Ehrliche Selbsteinschätzung: name at least one real, specific gap rather than a vague or false one.
- Choose a specialized domain and select three or four pieces of prior work that represent it.
- Revise each selected piece once more for accuracy, register, and valency.
- Compile a short glossary of key domain terms, including gender, plural, and case or preposition frames.
- Write a commentary stating the domain, justifying your selections, and naming at least one remaining gap.
- Draft a one-sentence conclusion using "Als Fazit lässt sich sagen, dass ..."
- Reread the whole portfolio for consistency of terminology, register, and spelling across all pieces.
Revision checklist:
- Do all selected pieces clearly belong to one coherent specialized domain?
- Is each selection justified with a specific reason rather than a general statement?
- Does the glossary include gender, plural, and valency information where relevant?
- Is at least one real, specific gap named honestly?
- Is terminology, register, and spelling consistent across all pieces in the portfolio?
Culture and Communication
In many professional and academic German-speaking contexts, naming a specific limitation is regarded as a sign of competence rather than weakness, provided the limitation is described precisely and paired with a plan to address it. A commentary that claims complete mastery of a specialized domain is generally viewed with more skepticism than one that names a concrete, well-defined gap. This expectation varies by institution, discipline, and individual, and should not be treated as a fixed national trait.
Expectations for a professional or academic portfolio, including how explicitly limitations should be stated and how formal the accompanying commentary should be, can differ somewhat across institutions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. When preparing a portfolio for a specific audience, note the relevant institutional or national context rather than assuming one practice applies everywhere, continuing the labeling habit from Chapter 14.
Common Mistakes to Recheck
Error: A learner writes a commentary that only lists the titles of included texts, such as "Diese Mappe enthält eine Notiz, eine Rede und ein Glossar.", without explaining why each piece was chosen.
Correction: Justify each choice with a reason: "Ich habe diesen Text aufgenommen, weil er zeigt, dass ..."
Error: A learner writes a commentary claiming no remaining weaknesses, such as "Ich beherrsche diesen Fachbereich vollständig."
Correction: Name a specific, plausible gap instead: "Eine Lücke, die ich noch feststelle, ist ...", as modeled in this chapter.
Error: A learner uses two different terms for the same concept in different pieces of the portfolio, such as switching between Prozessänderung and Prozessumstellung without explanation.
Correction: Choose one term per concept, record it in the glossary, and use it consistently throughout the portfolio, as in Chapter 16's usage-note practice.
Chapter Summary
Chapter 19 continued Unit IV by asking learners to assemble prior work into a coherent specialized portfolio. Learners practiced selecting and justifying pieces of work, compiling a domain glossary, writing an honest reflective commentary that names a real limitation, and presenting the portfolio orally with calm, evenly paced delivery. No new grammar system was introduced; the chapter consolidated connectors, valency-aware vocabulary, and nominal style already active from earlier volumes and chapters, applying them to reflective, genre-conscious self-assessment.
Chapter Review
Before moving to Chapter 20, confirm that you can:
Analyse
- identify whether a portfolio commentary justifies its selections or merely lists them;
- recognize whether a stated gap is specific and honest or vague and evasive;
- check glossary entries for consistent gender, valency, and register information; and
- identify inconsistent terminology across pieces of a portfolio.
Produktion
- select and justify pieces of work for a specialized portfolio;
- compile a short domain glossary with gender, plural, and valency information;
- write a reflective commentary that names a real remaining gap; and
- present a portfolio orally with clear, evenly paced delivery.
Practical Performance Task
Kapitel 19 — Praktische Aufgabe
Eine Fachmappe zusammenstellen und vorstellen — Assembling and Presenting a Specialized Portfolio
Complete the Writing Workshop task above, then present your portfolio aloud to a partner or record yourself, using the Speaking Practice format above as a guide. Be ready to answer at least one follow-up question about a selection choice or a named gap.
1. Fachbereich wählen
Select a specialized domain and identify three or four pieces of prior work that represent it.
2. Mappe überarbeiten
Revise each selected piece and compile a short glossary with gender, plural, and valency.
3. Kommentar schreiben
Write a commentary that justifies selections and honestly names at least one gap.
4. Mappe vorstellen
Deliver a short oral summary and respond to at least one follow-up question.
| Criterion | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Domain coherence | All selected pieces genuinely belong to one specialized domain |
| Justification | Each selection is justified with a specific reason, not merely listed |
| Glossary accuracy | Glossary entries include correct gender, plural, and valency information |
| Honest self-assessment | At least one real, specific gap is named and paired with a plan |
| Delivery and consistency | Oral presentation is calm and evenly paced; terminology and register are consistent across pieces |
Developing
The portfolio has a recognizable domain but selections are only partially justified, the glossary is incomplete, and the named gap is vague.Solid
The portfolio is coherent, most selections are justified with specific reasons, the glossary is accurate, and one specific, honest gap is named.Strong
The portfolio is precisely coherent and consistently revised, every selection is clearly justified, the glossary is complete and accurate, the named gap is specific and paired with a credible plan, and the oral presentation is confident, well-paced, and easy to follow.Answer Key
Guided Practice
- Open production; a good answer follows the pattern "Ich habe mich auf ... konzentriert, weil ..." with a clearly named domain and reason.
- Open production; a good answer uses "Ich habe diesen Text aufgenommen, weil ..." with a specific, plausible reason.
- Open production; a good glossary entry includes gender and plural for a noun, or valency (case and preposition) for a verb, e.g., "die Prozessänderung, die Prozessänderungen" or "eingehen auf (+ Akkusativ)."
- Open production; the sentence should name a specific, plausible gap, e.g., "Eine Lücke, die ich noch feststelle, ist die Verwaltungssprache."
- Open production; a good answer uses "Als Fazit lässt sich sagen, dass ..." to summarize the portfolio's overall strength or focus.
Listening Practice — Comprehension Questions
- A good portfolio shows how the included texts came to be, not only the finished texts themselves.
- Learners should honestly name at least one gap rather than acting as if their language ability is already complete.
- A glossary with gender, valency, and register is useful to other readers because it makes the portfolio's terminology clear and usable beyond the writer's own understanding.
Reading Practice — Comprehension Questions
- The commentary focuses on communication around a process change; it mentions a preparation note, an oral position statement, and a specialized glossary.
- Der Verfasser hat die Redenotizen aufgenommen, weil sie zeigen, dass er unter Zeitdruck präzise auf einen Einwand eingehen konnte, ohne seinen Standpunkt aufzugeben.
- The writer identifies administrative language as a gap; he has marked certain terms with a question mark because he has not yet fully verified their valency.
- The connector is weil; it introduces a subordinate clause with verb-final word order.
Speaking and Writing
Open production. Evaluate using the performance task criteria table and rubric scale above, with particular attention to domain coherence, justification, and honest self-assessment.
Independent Study Tools
Für Selbstlerner
- Choose a specialized domain from your own life or work and list three pieces of language work you already have that relate to it.
- Write one glossary entry per day for a week, checking gender, plural, and valency against a dictionary.
- Record a one-minute self-assessment naming one strength and one specific gap in your German.
Selbstüberprüfung
- Did I justify each selection with a specific reason rather than simply listing it?
- Did I name a real, specific gap rather than a vague or false one?
- Is my terminology, register, and spelling consistent across every piece in the portfolio?
Looking Ahead
Was Sie nach Kapitel 19 können — What you can do after Chapter 19
You can now select, revise, and justify a coherent body of specialized work, compile an accurate domain glossary, and present your work with honest, specific self-assessment. This reflective, genre-conscious control across an entire body of work supports the culminating project ahead. Chapter 20 draws together the precision, mediation, and portfolio skills developed across this volume into a single final mastery project.
