कल क्या हुआ?

Volume I, Chapter 14: First Past Events · Speak and Write Hindi: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Say what happened yesterday or recently.
  2. Narrate a short completed event using common intransitive perfective verbs such as गया/गई, आया/आई, and हुआ/हुई.
  3. Recognize ने in familiar, formulaic transitive perfective examples.
  4. Sequence two or three events using फिर, उसके बाद, and लेकिन.
  5. Distinguish current activity from a completed event.
  6. Read a short diary entry or message about yesterday.

Communication Scenario

Priya runs into her friend Anjali on Monday morning. Anjali asks about Priya's weekend, and Priya narrates what happened on Saturday. Later, Priya writes a short diary entry about her day.

  1. Notice how Priya uses गई and आई to say where she went and came from.
  2. Notice the one sentence where Priya uses मैंने with खाया as a fixed, formulaic pattern — you will meet the full ने system later, in Chapter 16.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 14 completes the main body of Unit III, शहर, स्वास्थ्य, पढ़ाई और काम. It contrasts the progressive you developed in Chapter 13 with a new system: completed events in the past. This chapter introduces the perfective carefully, through common intransitive verbs, and treats ने as receptive and formulaic only.

Coming Into This Chapter

You can describe what someone is doing right now with रहा/रही/रहे, express ability with सकना, and make polite requests. You also know habitual present verbs for routines from Chapter 9.

New in This Chapter

Time expressions for yesterday and recent events; common intransitive perfective forms with gender agreement; event-sequencing connectors; a first, formulaic look at ने in familiar sentences; and the contrast between ongoing and completed action.

Looking Forward

Chapter 15 reviews Unit III as a whole. Chapter 16, पिछले सप्ताह, returns to ने and develops it into a fully productive system with controlled transitive verbs.

Productive vocabulary count: approximately 30-40 items, within the ordinary chapter range. Receptive only: additional past-event verbs, common transitive perfective forms with ने beyond the formulaic examples below, informal narrative markers, and short diary vocabulary are recognition-only at this stage.

Devanagari and Pronunciation

This chapter introduces no new letters or matras. It develops schwa deletion in past-tense forms and continues building reading fluency with short narrated text.

Pronunciation Focus — Schwa deletion in past-tense forms

Perfective forms such as गया, आया, and हुआ are read as two smooth syllables, not three separate letter-sounds. Practice reading them at natural speed alongside their feminine counterparts गई, आई, and हुई.

Pronunciation Focus — Rhythm of short narrated clauses

When one clause follows another with फिर or उसके बाद, group each clause as a single breath unit rather than pausing after every word. Practice this rhythm with the reading passage below.

Pronunciation Focus — पहुँचना / पहुंचना and nasalization

This word may be written with a chandrabindu or an anusvara depending on the writer, but both spellings represent a nasalized vowel before च. Practice the nasal quality rather than a separate न sound.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

14.5 The intransitive perfective and gender agreement

Language Building Block — Intransitive perfective agreement
मैं बाज़ार गया। मैं बाज़ार गई। वह कल आया। वह कल आई।
I went to the market (m./f.). He/she came yesterday (m./f.).
Language Focus — Completed events with intransitive verbs

Hindi marks a completed event with a perfective participle that agrees with the subject in gender and number, similar to the progressive participle you learned in Chapter 13. With intransitive verbs such as जाना, आना, and होना, no auxiliary है or हूँ is added in the simple past: गया alone means "went," already carrying past-tense meaning. This is different from the progressive, which always needs हूँ/है/हैं.

14.6 Asking what happened

Language Building Block — क्या हुआ?
कल क्या हुआ? कल एक पार्टी हुई।
What happened yesterday? A party happened yesterday.

होना in its perfective form हुआ/हुई is especially useful for describing events, not just actions: पार्टी अच्छी हुई (the party turned out well) uses the same pattern.

14.7 A first, formulaic look at ने

Language Building Block — Formulaic मैंने ... खाया
मैंने खाना खाया। मैंने चाय पी।
I ate food. I drank tea.
Language Focus — ने as a receptive, formulaic pattern

Some Hindi verbs, including खाना (to eat) and पीना (to drink), require a small word, ने, after the subject when describing a completed action. In this chapter, treat मैंने खाना खाया and मैंने चाय पी as fixed, memorized expressions. Do not yet try to apply ने to other verbs, other subjects, or other tenses — the full system, including why some verbs require it and how the verb agrees with the object, is developed productively beginning in Chapter 16.

14.8 Sequencing events

Language Building Block — फिर and उसके बाद
मैं सुबह बाज़ार गई। फिर मैंने चाय पी। उसके बाद मैं घर आई।
In the morning I went to the market. Then I drank tea. After that I came home.

Use फिर for a simple "then," उसके बाद for a slightly more formal "after that," and लेकिन to introduce a contrast, such as an interruption or an unexpected turn in the story.

14.9 Progressive versus perfective

Language Building Block — Contrast in time
मैं अभी काम कर रही हूँ। कल मैं बाज़ार गई थी नहीं — मैं घर पर थी।
I am working right now. (Contrast: describing a completed event uses the perfective, not the progressive.)

Use the progressive from Chapter 13 only for actions happening right now. Use the perfective forms in this chapter for events that are already finished. Mixing the two is one of the most common errors at this stage.

Boundary: This chapter does not require independent production of full ergative agreement, arbitrary transitive perfectives, or literary past styles. ने appears only in the two fixed formulas above.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Anjali sees Priya on Monday morning and asks about her weekend.

अंजलि नमस्ते प्रिया! सप्ताहांत कैसा रहा? कल क्या हुआ? Namaste Priyaa! Saptaahaant kaisaa rahaa? Kal kyaa huaa? Hello Priya! How was the weekend? What happened yesterday?
प्रिया नमस्ते अंजलि! शनिवार को मैं सुबह बाज़ार गई। फिर मैंने एक फ़िल्म देखी। Namaste Anjali! Shanivaar ko maiँ subah baazaar gaee. Phir maiँne ek film dekhee. Hello Anjali! On Saturday I went to the market in the morning. Then I watched a movie.
अंजलि अच्छा! उसके बाद क्या हुआ? Achchaa! Uske baad kyaa huaa? Nice! What happened after that?
प्रिया शाम को मेरे दोस्त घर आए, और हमने खाना खाया। बहुत मज़ा आया, लेकिन मैं बहुत थकी हूँ। Shaam ko mere dost ghar aae, aur hamne khaanaa khaayaa. Bahut mazaa aayaa, lekin maiँ bahut thakee hooँ. In the evening my friends came home, and we ate food. It was a lot of fun, but I am very tired.
अंजलि बहुत अच्छा सप्ताहांत रहा! आज आप कैसा महसूस कर रही हैं? Bahut achchaa saptaahaant rahaa! Aaj aap kaisaa mahasoos kar rahee haiँ? That was a very good weekend! How are you feeling today?
प्रिया मैं थोड़ी थकी हूँ, लेकिन ठीक हूँ। धन्यवाद! Maiँ thoड़ी thakee hooँ, lekin ṭheek hooँ. Dhanyavaad! I am a little tired, but I am fine. Thank you!

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया सुबह कहाँ गई? (Where did Priya go in the morning?)
  2. शाम को क्या हुआ? (What happened in the evening?)
  3. प्रिया आज कैसा महसूस कर रही है? (How is Priya feeling today?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the model dialogue and the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note only who did what and when. On the second listen, complete the table.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

राज का सप्ताहांत — Raj's Weekend:
"शनिवार को राज सुबह देर से उठा। फिर वह अपने दोस्तों के साथ बाज़ार गया। वहाँ उसने एक किताब खरीदी। शाम को एक छोटी पार्टी हुई, और राज के दोस्त भी आए। सब लोगों ने खाना खाया और बहुत मज़ा आया। रविवार को राज घर पर रहा और आराम किया।"

सुनने का काम — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
राज शनिवार सुबह क्या किया? (What did Raj do Saturday morning?)______
राज बाज़ार में कहाँ गया, और क्यों? (Where did Raj go, and why?)______
शाम को क्या हुआ? (What happened in the evening?)______
रविवार को राज ने क्या किया? (What did Raj do on Sunday?)______

Reading Practice

Read each of the short texts below, sounding out the Devanagari carefully, then answer the questions.

सीमा की डायरी — Seema's Diary
कल एक लंबा दिन था। मैं सुबह जल्दी उठी और दफ़्तर गई। दोपहर को एक मीटिंग हुई। शाम को मैं घर आई और आराम किया। आज मैं ठीक महसूस कर रही हूँ।
Yesterday was a long day. I got up early in the morning and went to the office. There was a meeting in the afternoon. In the evening I came home and rested. Today I am feeling fine.
एक संदेश — A Message
नमस्ते! कल रात हमारी पार्टी बहुत अच्छी हुई। बहुत लोग आए, और सबने खाना खाया। धन्यवाद कि आप आईं!
Hello! Last night our party turned out very well. Many people came, and everyone ate food. Thank you for coming!

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. According to the diary, what happened in the afternoon?
  2. How does Seema say she feels today?
  3. According to the message, how did the party go?

Writing Workshop

Write a short supported note about yesterday in Devanagari.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write five to seven sentences narrating what happened yesterday (real or imagined), using at least two intransitive perfective verbs and one sequencing connector.

  1. Say when. Begin with a time expression, such as कल or शनिवार को.
  2. Say where you went or who came. Use गया/गई or आया/आई, agreeing with your own gender.
  3. Sequence a second event. Use फिर or उसके बाद.
  4. Optionally use one formulaic ने sentence. Use only मैंने खाना खाया or मैंने चाय पी without changing the pattern.
  5. Add a reaction. Use बहुत मज़ा आया or a feeling word from Chapter 12.
  6. Close with how you feel today. Use आज मैं ... हूँ.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • Intransitive perfective forms agree correctly with the subject's gender: गया/गई, आया/आई.
  • Any ने sentence used matches exactly one of the two fixed formulas from this chapter.
  • At least one sequencing connector appears: फिर, उसके बाद, or लेकिन.
  • The progressive is not used to describe a completed event.
  • A danda (।) ends each sentence, and spelling matches this chapter's vocabulary.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: reading the model dialogue aloud

Read the model dialogue above aloud twice: once slowly, sounding out each word, and once at a more natural pace. Pay attention to the agreement between गई, आए, and the speaker's gender or the subject's number.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: narrating a simple event

With a partner, take turns asking कल क्या हुआ? and narrating one or two events from a real or invented yesterday. Use at least one sequencing connector.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating what happened yesterday in three or four sentences, including where you went and one reaction to the day.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Sharing what happened

How much detail people share about a weekend or a recent event depends on the relationship and setting. Close friends may exchange longer, more personal accounts, while colleagues or acquaintances often keep the account brief and general. Neither style is more correct than the other.

Culture in Context — Everyday narratives, not dramatic stories

This chapter uses ordinary, practical events, such as a trip to the market or a small gathering with friends, rather than dramatic or highly stylized stories. Everyday narration like this is common in real conversation across many Hindi-speaking settings, whether in a family home, a student dormitory, or a workplace.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Wrong gender agreement in the perfective

Error: A female speaker saying मैं बाज़ार गया.

Correction: Match the perfective participle to the subject's gender: मैं बाज़ार गई (feminine).

Common Mistake — Adding an unnecessary auxiliary to the simple perfective

Error: Saying मैं गया हूँ to mean simply "I went yesterday."

Correction: For a simple completed event, गया alone is enough: मैं कल गया. Adding हूँ changes the meaning and belongs to a different, more advanced pattern not covered in this chapter.

Common Mistake — Extending ने beyond the two fixed formulas

Error: Saying मैंने गया, trying to add ने to an intransitive verb.

Correction: ने does not attach to जाना at all, and at this stage should be used only in the memorized patterns मैंने खाना खाया and मैंने चाय पी. The full rule for which verbs take ने is developed in Chapter 16.

Chapter Review

भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)

1. Return to the model dialogue and answer in English:

  1. Where did Priya go on Saturday morning?
  2. What happened at Priya's house in the evening?

भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)

1. Complete with the correctly agreeing perfective form:

  1. सीमा कल घर ______। (went, feminine)
  2. राज और मोहन शाम को ______। (came, masculine plural)

2. Complete the fixed formula: ______ खाना खाया। (I ate food)

3. Correct the error: मैं गया हूँ कल।

4. Combine these two events with फिर: मैं बाज़ार गई। / मैंने चाय पी।

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. Return to the two texts above and answer:

  1. What did Seema do first thing in the morning, according to her diary?
  2. Why is the message-writer thanking the reader?

भाग D — लेखन (Writing)

1. Write the past-event note described in the Writing Workshop above, following all six steps.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. With a partner, narrate what happened yesterday without reading from a script, and have your partner ask one follow-up question.

Cumulative Review

This chapter recycles daily routine and time vocabulary (Chapter 9), the progressive (Chapter 13), study/work and technology vocabulary (Chapter 13), feeling expressions (Chapter 12), and connectors such as फिर and लेकिन (Chapter 9).

Practical Performance Task

कल के बारे में बताना — Telling What Happened Yesterday

Complete the following four connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the model dialogue or listening passage above and complete the listening table.
  2. Speak with a partner (or record yourself): narrate one simple completed event with time reference, sequence, and at least one correctly controlled perfective form.
  3. Read the diary entry and message above and answer the comprehension questions.
  4. Write a short past-event note following the Writing Workshop checklist.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Intransitive perfective with agreementCorrect use of गया/गई, आया/आई, हुआ/हुई matching the subject.
Time referenceClear use of कल or a named day to place the event in time.
Event sequencingCorrect use of फिर, उसके बाद, or लेकिन to connect two or three events.
Formulaic नेIf used, matches exactly one of the two fixed formulas taught in this chapter.
Devanagari reading and writingDiary and message texts read accurately; note written with correct spelling and minimal romanization.

This task evaluates only what this chapter has taught. It does not require independent production of full ergative agreement, arbitrary transitive perfectives, or literary past styles — those remain outside this chapter's scope and begin in Chapter 16.
