अनुभव और राय
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Talk about simple past experiences using a supported मैंने ... किया है-type pattern in limited contexts.
- Compare two people, places, or things using से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे.
- State an opinion with मुझे लगता है कि... in a controlled frame.
- Give a simple reason using क्योंकि.
- Make a short recommendation.
- Read a short review or opinion message in Devanagari.
Communication Scenario
A few days after Rohan's cousin's birthday party, Priya and Rohan talk about two restaurants they have each tried near their neighborhood. Priya compares the food, the price, and the service, gives her opinion, and recommends one restaurant over the other. Rohan shares a different experience and offers a reason for his preference.
- Notice how comparison words come before the adjective: यह जगह उस जगह से ज़्यादा अच्छी है.
- Notice how मुझे लगता है कि... introduces a personal opinion, and क्योंकि introduces the reason behind it.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 18 continues Unit IV, अनुभव, योजना और कहानी. Chapter 17 introduced productive future forms, intention with चाहना, and the formulaic वाला है/हैं pattern. Chapter 18 turns to comparison, opinion, and supported experience, drawing together preferences, past narration, and future language from earlier chapters into more evaluative communication.
Coming Into This Chapter
You can make future plans with जाना and आना, express intention with चाहना, describe an already-arranged plan with वाला है/हैं, and invite, accept, decline, and reschedule politely.
New in This Chapter
Comparison becomes productive for the first time, using से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे. You will also state opinions with मुझे लगता है कि..., give reasons with क्योंकि, and use a supported experience pattern in limited contexts.
Looking Forward
Chapter 19, कहानी, कारण और संबंध, connects sentences into fuller explanations and short stories, expanding reason, contrast, and condition into more connected discourse.

| सलाह | advice, recommendation | new noun; supports recommendation language |
18.3 Opinion and reasoning frames
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| मुझे लगता है कि... | I think that... | controlled opinion frame for this chapter |
| मेरे ख़याल से... | in my opinion... | recognized alternative opinion frame |
| क्योंकि | because | controlled reason connector |
| इसलिए | therefore, so | recognition-level result connector |
| मेरी सलाह है कि... | my advice/recommendation is that... | formulaic recommendation frame |
Productive vocabulary for this chapter is limited to the items above: experience, comparison, and opinion vocabulary. All other vocabulary in this chapter is recycled from earlier chapters, especially food, shopping, and travel domains.
Devanagari and Pronunciation Focus
This chapter introduces no new letters or matras. It focuses on the rhythm of comparison phrases and the intonation of opinion and disagreement.
Review schwa deletion in महँगा, सस्ता, and बढ़िया. Read each word as a natural spoken form, paying attention to the nasalized vowel in महँगा.
Practice grouping इस रेस्तराँ से as one phrase before adding ज़्यादा अच्छा है. Comparison sentences read more naturally when the से-phrase is grouped closely with the noun it follows.
Listen for the thoughtful, slightly falling tone of मुझे लगता है कि... compared with a more direct statement. Polite disagreement often softens with a pause and a courteous opener rather than a flat contradiction.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
18.4 Language Focus — Comparison with से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे
Hindi comparison uses the postposition से together with ज़्यादा (more) or कम (less) to compare two items. सबसे marks the superlative, meaning "the most" or "the -est," and does not require से.
This chapter limits productive comparison practice to adjectives already familiar from earlier chapters, such as अच्छा, बढ़िया, सस्ता, and महँगा, in controlled sentences with two or three familiar nouns.
18.5 Language Focus — Opinions with मुझे लगता है कि...
मुझे लगता है कि... introduces a personal opinion in a supported frame, similar in structure to the experiencer patterns already familiar from Chapter 12. The clause after कि follows ordinary sentence order.
18.6 Language Focus — Reasons with क्योंकि
क्योंकि connects a statement to its reason. It is placed between the two clauses, and each clause keeps ordinary Hindi word order.
18.7 Language Focus — Supported experience with मैंने ... किया है
This chapter introduces a limited, controlled experience pattern built on the perfective forms already familiar from Chapters 14 and 16. Learners use it only with a small set of familiar transitive verbs to talk about something they have tried or done.
This pattern is limited, not a full present-perfect system. This chapter restricts productive use to familiar transitive verbs such as देखना and खाना, and does not require independent production of the full range of perfective agreement or object-marking conditions.
This chapter does not require advanced subjunctive forms, literary conditionals, full relative-correlative production, or advanced argumentative essays. Productive practice remains limited to comparison with familiar adjectives, the मुझे लगता है कि... opinion frame, क्योंकि reason clauses, and the supported experience pattern with familiar verbs.
Model Dialogue
Setting: A few days after the party, Priya and Rohan compare two restaurants near their neighborhood.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- रोहन को नए रेस्तराँ के बारे में क्या लगता है? (What does Rohan think about the new restaurant?)
- प्रिया को पुराना रेस्तराँ ज़्यादा पसंद क्यों है? (Why does Priya like the old restaurant more?)
- वे दोनों आख़िर में क्या करने का फ़ैसला करते हैं? (What do they finally decide to do?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the model dialogue and the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note only which restaurant each speaker prefers. On the second listen, complete the table.
If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
अमित की राय — Amit's Opinion:
"मैंने पिछले हफ़्ते एक नई फ़िल्म देखी है। मुझे लगता है कि वह फ़िल्म बहुत अच्छी है, क्योंकि कहानी दिलचस्प है। लेकिन मेरी बहन को वह फ़िल्म पसंद नहीं आई; उसे लगता है कि पुरानी फ़िल्में इससे बेहतर हैं। मेरी सलाह है कि आप ख़ुद देखकर तय करें।"
सुनने का काम — Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| अमित ने क्या देखा है? (What has Amit seen?) | ______ |
| अमित को फ़िल्म के बारे में क्या लगता है? (What does Amit think about the film?) | ______ |
| अमित की बहन को क्या लगता है? (What does Amit's sister think?) | ______ |
| अमित की सलाह क्या है? (What is Amit's recommendation?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short review below, sounding out unfamiliar words carefully, then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- What is the reviewer's overall opinion of the restaurant?
- What reason does the reviewer give for the higher price seeming reasonable?
- What does the reviewer recommend?
Writing Workshop
Write a short comparison and recommendation about two places, activities, or experiences you know.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write six to eight sentences: (1) mention one experience using the supported मैंने ... किया है-type pattern, (2) compare two things using से ज़्यादा, से कम, or सबसे, (3) state your opinion with मुझे लगता है कि..., (4) give one reason with क्योंकि, and (5) end with a short recommendation.
- Introduce your experience. Begin with मैंने ... है and name what you saw, ate, or tried.
- Compare. Use से ज़्यादा, से कम, or सबसे with a familiar adjective.
- State your opinion. Use मुझे लगता है कि....
- Give a reason. Use क्योंकि to explain your opinion.
- Recommend. Close with मेरी सलाह है कि... or a similar recycled courtesy formula.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- The supported experience pattern is used only with familiar transitive verbs from this chapter or earlier chapters.
- Comparison words appear in the correct order: noun + से + ज़्यादा/कम + adjective.
- The opinion clause after मुझे लगता है कि follows ordinary Hindi word order.
- At least one reason is given with क्योंकि.
- A danda (।) ends each sentence, and spelling matches this chapter's vocabulary.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: substitution drill
Practice the pattern यह ___ उस ___ से ज़्यादा अच्छा है by substituting different nouns: रेस्तराँ, फ़िल्म, जगह. Then restate each as an opinion with मुझे लगता है कि....
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: comparing experiences
With a partner, take turns describing an experience you have each had, comparing two options, and giving a reason for your opinion. One partner should politely disagree and offer an alternative view.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record yourself comparing two places or experiences you know, stating your opinion, and giving a reason. Listen back and check your comparison word order and adjective agreement.
Culture and Communication
Directly contradicting another person's opinion can feel abrupt in many Hindi-speaking social contexts. Framing a differing view with यह सच है, लेकिन... or मुझे लगता है कि... softens disagreement while still stating a clear opinion, though exact expectations vary by relationship and setting.
Recommending restaurants, films, and other experiences is a common everyday activity across Hindi-speaking communities, but preferences and priorities vary widely by family, budget, region, and personal taste. Avoid presenting any single opinion as the universal standard.
Common Mistakes
Error: Saying यह ज़्यादा अच्छा से वह है.
Correction: The से-phrase comes before ज़्यादा/कम and the adjective: यह उससे ज़्यादा अच्छा है.
Error: Saying यह रेस्तराँ उससे सबसे अच्छा है when comparing only two restaurants.
Correction: Use से ज़्यादा for two items: यह रेस्तराँ उससे ज़्यादा अच्छा है. Reserve सबसे for comparing three or more.
Error: Overusing the supported experience pattern with unfamiliar verbs, such as forcing it onto verbs not yet practiced.
Correction: Keep this pattern to familiar verbs such as देखना and खाना, and use the simple perfective from Chapter 16 for other narration.
Chapter Review

Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles food and shopping vocabulary (Chapters 6 and 8), travel and place vocabulary (Chapter 11), past narration with ने (Chapter 16), and future plans (Chapter 17), while developing productive comparison, opinion, reason, and a limited supported experience pattern for the first time.
