कहानी, कारण और संबंध
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Connect a statement to its reason using क्योंकि and to a result using इसलिए.
- Contrast two ideas using लेकिन within a connected explanation.
- State a simple condition using अगर...तो.
- Report simple information using कि after verbs such as कहना and लगना.
- Recognize the relative-correlative pattern जो...वह in supported reading.
- Write a short connected A2 paragraph using sequence, reason, and condition.
Communication Scenario
Priya writes a message to her friend Meera explaining why she missed a get-together last week, and what she plans to do if the weather is good this weekend. Meera replies, reporting what a mutual friend said and offering a small piece of advice. Their exchange moves from a personal explanation into a short connected story with reasons, a condition, and reported information.
- Notice how क्योंकi-clauses and इसलिए-clauses link one idea to another across several sentences, not just one.
- Notice how अगर मौसम अच्छा हुआ, तो हम पार्क जाएँगे states a condition and its result together.
- Notice how उसने कहा कि... reports what someone else said, without quoting their exact words.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 19 continues Unit IV, अनुभव, योजना और कहानी, and is the last regular instructional chapter before the Chapter 20 final assessment. Chapter 18 introduced productive comparison with से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे, opinions with मुझे लगता है कि..., reasons with क्योंकि, and a limited supported experience pattern. Chapter 19 expands reason and contrast into fuller explanation, adds condition and reported information, and gives learners a first receptive look at relative-correlative structure.
Coming Into This Chapter
You can compare two or more things, state an opinion with मुझे लगता है कि..., give a reason with क्योंकि, and describe a limited past experience.
New in This Chapter
Reason and contrast expand into connected explanation with क्योंकि, इसलिए, and लेकिन. You will also state a simple condition with अगर...तो, report information with कि, and recognize जो...वह in reading without needing to produce it independently.
Looking Forward
Chapter 20, अंतिम कार्य: हिंदी व्यवहार में, brings together every active system from Volume I into one integrated CEFR A2 performance project, with no new grammar.
Core Vocabulary
19.1 Stories, problems, and social situations
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| कहानी | story | new key noun for this chapter |
| समस्या | problem | new noun for problem-and-reason contexts |
| कारण | reason, cause | new key noun; pairs with क्योंकि |
| मौसम | weather | supports the condition examples in this chapter |
| संदेश | message | recycled communication context from Chapter 13 |
| मुलाक़ात / मुलाकात | meeting, get-together | nukta variant noted |
19.2 Connection and reporting words
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| क्योंकि | because | consolidated from Chapter 18; expanded across longer explanation |
| इसलिए | therefore, so | moves from recognition (Ch. 14, 18) to controlled productive use |
| लेकिन | but | recycled connector; developed within longer explanations |
| अगर | if | new connector; pairs with तो |
| तो | then (result marker) | completes the अगर...तो frame |
| कहना | to say | new verb; supports reported information with कि |
19.3 Reported and connected-discourse frames
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| उसने कहा कि... | he/she said that... | controlled reported-information frame |
| मुझे लगता है कि... | I think that... | recycled from Chapter 18; reused for reported opinion |
| अगर...तो... | if...then... | controlled condition frame for this chapter |
| जो...वह... | the one who / that which... that... | receptive relative-correlative recognition only |
| वैसे | by the way, anyway | receptive discourse marker for softened topic shift |
Productive vocabulary for this chapter is limited to the items above: story, reason, condition, and reporting vocabulary. जो...वह and वैसे are receptive only. All other vocabulary in this chapter is recycled from earlier chapters, especially communication, planning, and opinion vocabulary.
Devanagari and Pronunciation Focus
This chapter introduces no new letters or matras. It focuses on the rhythm of longer connected sentences and the intonation of condition and reported speech.
Review schwa deletion in समस्या, कारण, and मौसम. Read each word as a natural spoken form rather than sounding out every written vowel.
Practice a brief pause after the अगर-clause and before तो: अगर मौसम अच्छा हुआ, [pause] तो हम पार्क जाएँगे. A short pause at the comma helps the listener track the two connected parts of the sentence.
Listen for how क्योंकि, इसलिए, and लेकिन each carry their own light stress as they introduce a new part of a longer explanation, rather than being rushed together with the surrounding words.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
19.4 Language Focus — Reason and result with क्योंकि and इसलिए
क्योंकि (because) introduces the reason after the main statement, just as in Chapter 18. इसलिए (therefore, so) works in the opposite direction: the reason comes first, and इसलिए introduces the result that follows from it. Both connectors keep ordinary Hindi word order in each clause.
Notice that the two sentences above describe the same situation in opposite order. This chapter moves इसलिए from the receptive status it held in Chapters 14 and 18 into controlled productive use.
19.5 Language Focus — Contrast with लेकिन in longer explanation
लेकिन (but) is already familiar from earlier chapters. This chapter develops it further by placing it inside a longer explanation that also contains a reason or a result, rather than a single short sentence.
19.6 Language Focus — Condition with अगर...तो
अगर introduces a condition, and तो introduces the result. This chapter limits condition to simple, likely, present-or-future situations using familiar habitual and future forms, not hypothetical or contrary-to-fact conditions.
This chapter restricts productive practice to अगर...तो sentences with future or habitual outcomes and familiar vocabulary. It does not require hypothetical, contrary-to-fact, or literary conditional forms.
19.7 Language Focus — Reported information with कि
कि connects a reporting verb such as कहना or लगना to the information being reported. The clause after कि follows ordinary Hindi word order, just as in the मुझे लगता है कि... pattern from Chapter 18.
This chapter limits reported information to simple, present- or future-oriented statements with कहना and the already-familiar लगना pattern. It does not require full reported-speech tense shifting or quoted speech.
19.8 Language Focus — Recognizing जो...वह
जो...वह is a relative-correlative pattern: जो introduces a description, and a later वह refers back to it. This chapter introduces the pattern receptively only, in supported reading, so that learners can recognize it and understand its meaning.
Receptive only. Learners are not required to produce जो...वह sentences independently in this chapter. Recognize the pattern in reading and understand its meaning; full productive control is developed in later volumes.
This chapter does not require formal literary Hindi, full relative-correlative production, advanced reported speech with tense shifting, or complex hypothetical conditional systems. Productive practice remains limited to क्योंकि, इसलिए, लेकिन in longer explanations, simple अगर...तो conditions, and simple reported information with कि.
Model Dialogue
Setting: Priya writes a message to her friend Meera about missing last week's get-together and her plans for the weekend.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- प्रिया पिछले हफ़्ते मुलाक़ात में क्यों नहीं आई? (Why didn't Priya come to last week's get-together?)
- रोहन ने मीरा को क्या कहा था? (What had Rohan told Meera?)
- अगर मौसम अच्छा हुआ, तो वे क्या करेंगे? (If the weather is good, what will they do?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the model dialogue and the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note only the main reason and the main condition mentioned. On the second listen, complete the table.
If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
अमित की कहानी — Amit's Story:
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| अमित पिछले हफ़्ते दफ़्तर क्यों नहीं गया? (Why didn't Amit go to the office last week?) | ______ |
| अमित के दोस्त ने क्या कहा? (What did Amit's friend say?) | ______ |
| अगर मौसम अच्छा रहा, तो अमित क्या करेगा? (If the weather stays good, what will Amit do?) | ______ |
| अमित को व्यायाम की ज़रूरत क्यों है? (Why does Amit need exercise?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short message below, sounding out unfamiliar words carefully, then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Why couldn't Priya come to the birthday party?
- What did Priya's mother tell her about the party?
- What does Priya suggest for next week, and why?
Writing Workshop
Write a short connected paragraph explaining a small problem or situation from your own life.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write six to eight sentences: (1) describe a small problem or situation, (2) give a reason using क्योंकि, (3) state a result using इसलिए, (4) add a contrast using लेकिन, (5) state a condition using अगर...तो, and (6) report what someone said using कि.
- Introduce the situation. Describe what happened or what is happening, using familiar vocabulary and recycled past narration.
- Give a reason. Use क्योंकि to explain why.
- State a result. Use इसलिए to connect the reason to what happened next.
- Add a contrast. Use लेकिन to introduce a different or unexpected part of the situation.
- State a condition. Use अगर...तो to describe what will happen next, depending on something.
- Report information. Use कहा कि or लगता है कि to report what someone else said or thought.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- क्योंकि and इसलिए are used in the correct direction: reason-then-क्योंकि or reason-then-इसलिए-result.
- The अगर-clause and the तो-clause each keep ordinary Hindi word order.
- Reported information after कि reads as a natural, ordinary Hindi sentence.
- जो...वह is used only for recognition in reading, not required in the learner's own writing this chapter.
- A danda (।) ends each sentence, and spelling matches this chapter's vocabulary.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: chain building
Practice building a chain: state a simple fact, add a reason with क्योंकि, then restate the same information starting with the reason and ending with इसलिए. For example: मैं घर पर हूँ क्योंकि बारिश हो रही है → बारिश हो रही है, इसलिए मैं घर पर हूँ.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: explaining a small problem
With a partner, take turns explaining a small everyday problem, giving a reason, stating what you will do if a certain condition happens, and reporting what someone else said about the situation.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record yourself explaining a small problem, its reason, a condition for what happens next, and one piece of reported information. Listen back and check your use of क्योंकि, इसलिए, अगर...तो, and कि.
Culture and Communication
Explaining why you missed a social event is common courtesy in many Hindi-speaking contexts, though the expected level of detail, formality, and timing of the explanation varies by relationship, region, and setting. A brief, sincere reason is usually appreciated more than an elaborate excuse.
Reporting what someone else said, as in उसने कहा कि..., is a normal part of everyday communication, but it can also shape how a situation is understood by others. Speakers in many settings take care to report information accurately and to avoid exaggerating what was actually said.
Common Mistakes
Error: Saying मुझे बहुत काम था इसलिए मैं क्योंकि पार्टी में नहीं आई.
Correction: Use only one connector per sentence. Result-first: मुझे बहुत काम था, इसलिए मैं पार्टी में नहीं आई. Statement-first: मैं पार्टी में नहीं आई क्योंकि मुझे बहुत काम था.
Error: Saying अगर मौसम अच्छा हुआ, हम पार्क जाएँगे without तो.
Correction: Include तो before the result clause for clarity at this level: अगर मौसम अच्छा हुआ, तो हम पार्क जाएँगे.
Error: Attempting to build new जो...वह sentences from scratch in speaking or writing tasks.
Correction: This chapter treats जो...वह as receptive only. Recognize it in reading, but use familiar demonstrative and coordination patterns for your own speaking and writing this chapter.
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the model dialogue and answer in English:
- Why did Meera get a little worried about Priya?
- What are the two possible plans for the weekend, and what does each depend on?

1. With a partner, explain a small problem, give a reason, state a condition for what happens next, and report one piece of information from someone else.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles communication and messaging language (Chapter 13), past narration with ने (Chapter 16), future plans (Chapter 17), and comparison and opinion language (Chapter 18), while developing productive reason, result, contrast, and condition, and introducing controlled reported information and receptive relative-correlative recognition for the first time.
Practical Performance Task
कहानी, कारण और संबंध — Explaining a Situation and Connecting Ideas
Complete the following four connected tasks in order.
- Listen to the model dialogue or listening passage above and complete the listening table.
- Speak with a partner (or record yourself): explain a small problem, give a reason, state a condition, and report information.
- Read the short message above and answer the comprehension questions.
- Write the connected paragraph following the Writing Workshop checklist.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Reason and result | Correct, natural use of क्योंकि and इसलिए in the appropriate direction. |
| Contrast | Appropriate use of लेकिन within a longer explanation. |
| Condition | Correct, simple use of अगर...तो with familiar habitual or future forms. |
| Reported information | Accurate, controlled use of कहा कि or लगता है कि. |
| Devanagari reading and writing | Reading and dialogue read accurately, including recognition of जो...वह; task written with correct spelling and minimal romanization. |
This task evaluates only what this chapter has taught. It does not require formal literary Hindi, full relative-correlative production, advanced reported speech with tense shifting, or complex hypothetical conditional systems.

- Meera got a little worried because Rohan told her that Priya was sick (रोहन ने कहा कि तुम बीमार थीं), but Priya explains she was not actually sick, just very busy with work.
- If the weather is good, they will go to the park; if it rains, they will meet at home instead (अगर मौसम अच्छा हुआ, तो हम पार्क जाएँगे। अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम घर पर ही मिलेंगे).
Listening
- Amit did not go to the office because he was not feeling well.
- Amit's friend said that he was worried about Amit.
- If the weather stays good, Amit will go for a walk.
- Amit needs exercise because he wants some physical activity (मुझे थोड़ा व्यायाम चाहिए).
Reading — Comprehension

- The sentence जो तस्वीरें तुमने भेजी हैं, वे बहुत अच्छी हैं means "the photos that you sent are very nice"; जो introduces which photos are meant, and वे refers back to them.
Chapter Review — भाग B
- (a) मैं घर पर हूँ क्योंकि बारिश हो रही है। (b) मुझे बहुत भूख लगी थी, इसलिए मैंने खाना खाया।
- अगर कल छुट्टी हुई, तो हम बाज़ार जाएँगे।
- रोहन ने कहा कि उसे यह किताब बहुत पसंद है।
