Volume II, Chapter 3: Home, Neighborhood, and Community · Speak and Write Hindi: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a home, neighborhood, or community in connected, paragraph-length language.
  2. Explain what facilities, services, and problems exist nearby.
  3. Ask and answer questions about location, access, and availability using an expanded set of locative postpositions.
  4. Use oblique singular forms consistently and begin using familiar oblique plural forms before postpositions.
  5. Use से to express source and simple comparison, and तक to express distance or limit.
  6. Introduce a topic productively using के बारे में.
  7. Compare two places using से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे in controlled contexts.

Communication Scenario

Priya is helping Aman decide which neighborhood to live in while he studies in Delhi for a semester. She describes her own neighborhood — its market, its park, the metro station nearby, and one ongoing problem with noise — and then compares it with the quieter, more expensive area where her cousin Neha lives. Aman asks follow-up questions about distance, facilities, and access before deciding where to look for a room.

  1. Notice how Priya locates things relative to other things: in front of, behind, near, between, inside, and outside a place, not just "in" or "at" it.
  2. Notice that some nouns change their ending slightly right before a postposition — घर में but घर के सामने, बाज़ार तक but the same noun looks different if it were plural or modified. This changed form is called the oblique form.
  3. Notice that Priya compares her neighborhood and Neha's neighborhood using से ज़्यादा and से कम, and that she introduces the topic of noise using के बारे में.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 3 continues Unit I, संबंध और दिनचर्या. Chapter 2 developed expanded pronoun reference and honorific agreement for describing people. Chapter 3 shifts from people to places, expanding the oblique system and introducing a much wider set of locative postpositions than Volume I's में, पर, and के पास.

Coming Into This Chapter

You can describe a home and a few community places using में, पर, and के पास, you can compare two things informally, and you know that Hindi nouns sometimes take a special oblique form before a postposition, from limited Volume I exposure.

New in This Chapter

A wider set of locative postpositions built with के (के सामने, के पीछे, के अंदर, के बाहर, के ऊपर, के नीचे, के बीच); oblique singular consolidation and the beginning of oblique plural patterns; से for source and comparison; तक for distance or limit; के बारे में introduced productively; and controlled comparison with से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे.

Looking Forward

Chapter 4, काम, ज़िम्मेदारियाँ, और आदतें, shifts from place description to routines and responsibilities, introducing the habitual-progressive contrast and expanding obligation and need expressions.

में, पर, के पासin, on, nearVolume I, Chapters 4, 6
है, हैं, कितना/कितनीis, are, how much/how manyVolume I, Chapters 1, 4

Productive load for this chapter: approximately 40 items, combining the new neighborhood, location, and comparison vocabulary above with recycled Volume I home vocabulary. Regional housing terms such as कॉलोनी, गली, and specific village or campus terms remain receptive only in this chapter.

Devanagari and Pronunciation Focus

This chapter introduces no new letters or matras. It develops schwa deletion awareness in place names and compound postpositions, and continues rhythm practice in longer descriptive sentences.

Focus — Schwa deletion in place vocabulary

Read मोहल्ला, डाकघर, भीड़भाड़ वाला, and निवासी as natural spoken forms. Notice that डाकघर is pronounced roughly daakghar, with the inherent vowel after क dropped before the following consonant cluster.

Focus — Rhythm in compound postpositional phrases

Compound postpositions such as के सामने and के बीच form a single rhythmic unit with the noun before them: घर के सामने is said as one flowing phrase, not as three separate words. Practice reading the Language Building Blocks below aloud at a natural pace.

Focus — Distinguishing से in different functions

से carries slightly different stress and phrasing depending on its function: source (घर से, "from home"), distance origin (यहाँ से, "from here"), and comparison (इससे ज़्यादा, "more than this"). Listen for the surrounding words to identify the function rather than relying on the word alone.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter develops two closely related systems: an expanded set of locative postpositions built with the oblique genitive के, and the oblique form itself, which becomes more visible and more productive as more postpositions come into use. It also introduces से for source and comparison, तक for distance, के बारे में for topics, and controlled comparison.

3.5 Language Focus — The oblique form before postpositions

Many Hindi nouns take a special form, called the oblique form, immediately before a postposition. You have already seen this briefly with masculine nouns ending in -आ, such as कमरा becoming कमरे में. In this chapter, the oblique form appears consistently across a much wider range of postpositions, and you will begin to notice familiar oblique plural patterns as well, such as घरों में ("in the houses") from घर ("houses," plural).

Language Building Block — Oblique singular before postpositions
मेरा कमरा बड़ा है। कमरे में एक खिड़की है, और कमरे के सामने एक छोटा बगीचा है।
My room is big. There is one window in the room, and there is a small garden in front of the room.
Language Building Block — Beginning oblique plural forms
इस मोहल्ले में बहुत सारे घर हैं। घरों के बीच छोटी-छोटी गलियाँ हैं, और दुकानों के सामने हमेशा लोग खड़े रहते हैं।
There are many houses in this neighborhood. Between the houses there are small lanes, and in front of the shops people are always standing.

This chapter asks you to recognize and begin using familiar oblique plural forms, such as घरों and दुकानों, in controlled contexts. Full oblique plural control across all noun types develops later in the volume.

3.6 Language Focus — Expanded locative postpositions

Volume I introduced में, पर, and के पास. This chapter adds a wider set of postpositions built with the oblique genitive के, all of which describe position relative to another place or object.

Language Building Block — Locating things relative to a place
बैंक पार्क के सामने है, और डाकघर बैंक के पीछे है। मेट्रो स्टेशन बाज़ार और पार्क के बीच है। बाज़ार के अंदर बहुत सारी दुकानें हैं, लेकिन मैदान के बाहर कोई दुकान नहीं है।
The bank is in front of the park, and the post office is behind the bank. The metro station is between the market and the park. Inside the market there are many shops, but outside the field there is no shop.

3.7 Language Focus — से for source and comparison, तक for distance

से marks the place or thing something comes from, and it also marks the standard against which something is compared. तक marks a limit or endpoint, often used for distance.

Language Building Block — Source, distance, and comparison
मेरा घर मेट्रो स्टेशन से बहुत दूर नहीं है; वहाँ से यहाँ तक पैदल दस मिनट लगते हैं। मेरा मोहल्ला नेहा के मोहल्ले से सस्ता है, लेकिन नेहा का मोहल्ला मेरे मोहल्ले से ज़्यादा शांत है। मेरे ख़याल से, नेहा का मोहल्ला सबसे सुरक्षित है।
My house is not very far from the metro station; it takes ten minutes on foot from there to here. My neighborhood is cheaper than Neha's neighborhood, but Neha's neighborhood is quieter than my neighborhood. In my opinion, Neha's neighborhood is the safest.

3.8 Language Focus — Introducing a topic with के बारे में

के बारे में means "about" and is used to introduce the topic of a conversation, question, or piece of writing. It follows the oblique genitive pattern, like the other compound postpositions in this chapter.

Language Building Block — Talking about a topic
मैं अपने मोहल्ले के बारे में एक बात बताना चाहती हूँ: यहाँ शोर की एक बड़ी समस्या है।
I want to tell you one thing about my neighborhood: there is a big problem with noise here.
Boundary

This chapter does not require full oblique plural mastery, comprehensive comparison structures such as जितना...उतना, or advanced civic/bureaucratic vocabulary. It also does not introduce को as an object marker; that development begins in Chapter 4. Full oblique control develops gradually across the rest of the volume.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Priya and Aman sit in a café, looking at a map of Delhi neighborhoods on Priya's phone.

अमन प्रिया, तुम्हारा मोहल्ला कैसा है? क्या वहाँ सब सुविधाएँ हैं? Priyaa, tumhaaraa mohallaa kaisaa hai? Kyaa vahaaँ sab suvidhaaeँ hain? Priya, what is your neighborhood like? Does it have all the facilities?
प्रिया हाँ, काफ़ी अच्छा है। मेरे घर के सामने एक छोटा पार्क है, और घर के पीछे एक बाज़ार है। बाज़ार के अंदर हर तरह की दुकानें हैं। Haaँ, kaafee achchhaa hai. Mere ghar ke saamane ek chhotaa paark hai, aur ghar ke peechhe ek baazaar hai. Baazaar ke andar har tarah kee dukaaneँ hain. Yes, it's quite good. There's a small park in front of my house, and a market behind the house. Inside the market there are all kinds of shops.
अमन मेट्रो स्टेशन तुम्हारे घर से कितनी दूर है? Metro steshan tumhaare ghar se kitanee door hai? How far is the metro station from your house?
प्रिया बहुत दूर नहीं है। घर से स्टेशन तक पैदल सिर्फ़ दस मिनट लगते हैं। लेकिन एक समस्या है — मैं तुम्हें अपने मोहल्ले के बारे में एक बात बताना चाहती हूँ। Bahut door naheeँ hai. Ghar se steshan tak paidal sirf das minat lagate hain. Lekin ek samasyaa hai — maiँ tumheँ apane mohalle ke baare meँ ek baat bataanaa chaahatee hooँ. It's not very far. It only takes ten minutes on foot from home to the station. But there's one problem — I want to tell you one thing about my neighborhood.
अमन क्या बात है? Kyaa baat hai? What is it?
प्रिया यहाँ बहुत शोर है, ख़ासकर बाज़ार और मेट्रो स्टेशन के बीच वाली सड़क पर। मेरी चचेरी बहन नेहा का मोहल्ला मेरे मोहल्ले से ज़्यादा शांत है, लेकिन वहाँ घर मेरे मोहल्ले से ज़्यादा महंगे हैं। Yahaाँ bahut shor hai, khaasakar baazaar aur metro steshan ke beech vaalee saड़ak par. Meree chacheree bahan Nehaa kaa mohallaa mere mohalle se zyaadaa shaant hai, lekin vahaाँ ghar mere mohalle se zyaadaa mahaँge hain. There's a lot of noise here, especially on the street between the market and the metro station. My cousin Neha's neighborhood is quieter than mine, but houses there are more expensive than in my neighborhood.
अमन तो कौन-सा मोहल्ला सबसे अच्छा है — तुम्हारा या नेहा का? To kaun-saa mohallaa sabase achchhaa hai — tumhaaraa yaa Nehaa kaa? So which neighborhood is best — yours or Neha's?
प्रिया यह इस पर निर्भर करता है कि तुम्हें क्या चाहिए — सस्ता घर या शांत मोहल्ला! मेरे ख़याल से, तुम्हें पहले दोनों जगह देखनी चाहिए। Yah is par nirbhar karataa hai ki tumheँ kyaa chaahiye — sastaa ghar yaa shaant mohallaa! Mere khyaal se, tumheँ pahale donoँ jagah dekhanee chaahiye. It depends on what you need — a cheap house or a quiet neighborhood! In my opinion, you should look at both places first.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया के घर के सामने और पीछे क्या है? (What is in front of and behind Priya's house?)
  2. घर से मेट्रो स्टेशन तक पैदल कितना समय लगता है? (How long does it take on foot from home to the metro station?)
  3. प्रिया के मोहल्ले की समस्या क्या है? (What is the problem with Priya's neighborhood?)
  4. नेहा के मोहल्ले और प्रिया के मोहल्ले में क्या अंतर है? (What is the difference between Neha's neighborhood and Priya's neighborhood?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note the general layout of the neighborhood. On the second listen, complete the table.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

मेरा मोहल्ला — My Neighborhood:

Listening task:

Reading Practice

Read the short community notice below, which brings together location vocabulary, comparison, and topic introduction, then answer the questions.

सामुदायिक सूचना — Community Notice
A notice for our residents: about the new park. This new park is being built between the old market and the school. Inside the park there will be a playground for children, and in front of the park there will be space for bicycles. This park will be bigger than our old park, but it is a little far from the houses — from the nearest house to the park it will take about twenty minutes on foot. We hope that this park will become the best place for our whole neighborhood.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. Where exactly is the new park being built?
  2. What will be inside the park and in front of the park?
  3. How does the new park compare to the old park, and how far is it from the nearest house?

Writing Workshop

Write a connected paragraph describing a neighborhood or community — your own, a remembered one, or an imagined one.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write eight to ten sentences describing a neighborhood. Your paragraph must include: (1) at least three locative postpositions from this chapter (for example, के सामने, के पीछे, के बीच, के अंदर, के बाहर), (2) at least one oblique plural form such as घरों में or दुकानों के सामने, (3) a distance expression using से...तक, (4) one comparison using से ज़्यादा or से कम, and (5) one sentence introducing a topic with के बारे में, such as a problem or a favorite feature.

  1. Set the scene. Name the neighborhood and say generally where it is.
  2. Locate key places. Describe at least three places using compound postpositions.
  3. Give a distance. Say how far one place is from another using से...तक.
  4. Compare. Compare this neighborhood with another one you know.
  5. Introduce a topic. Use के बारे में to introduce one problem or one thing you like.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • Locative postpositions are used correctly with the oblique genitive के.
  • At least one oblique plural form is used correctly before a postposition.
  • से and तक are used correctly for source, distance, and comparison.
  • के बारे में is used to introduce a topic clearly.
  • Spelling, matras, and word spacing are correct, and a danda (।) ends each sentence.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: locating places

Look at a simple neighborhood map (real or imagined) and describe the location of five places out loud using compound postpositions such as के सामने, के पीछे, and के बीच.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: comparing two neighborhoods

With a partner, each describe a neighborhood you know, then compare them together using से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे. Ask each other at least one question about distance using तक.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing your own neighborhood, including at least three locative postpositions, one distance expression, and one comparison. Listen back and check your oblique forms.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Neighborhoods vary widely

Neighborhoods across Hindi-speaking regions differ enormously by city, town, village, income level, and available infrastructure. A dense urban market neighborhood in Delhi, a quiet residential colony, a small town near a highway, and a rural village each have different facilities, different rhythms of daily life, and different community expectations. No single housing pattern should be presented as typical of all Hindi-speaking communities.

Culture in Context — Multilingual signage and community life

Many neighborhoods across India display signage in Hindi, English, and one or more regional or local languages. Community notices, shop signs, and public announcements often mix languages naturally. This reflects everyday multilingualism rather than any weakening of Hindi.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Forgetting the oblique form before a postposition

Error: Writing घर के सामने correctly but then writing कमरा में instead of कमरे में.

Correction: कमरे में एक खिड़की है। Any noun immediately before a postposition needs its oblique form, not just nouns before के-compounds.

Common Mistake — Confusing से for comparison with से for source

Error: Writing मेरा मोहल्ला शांत है नेहा के मोहल्ले से without a clear adjective-comparison structure.

Correction: मेरा मोहल्ला नेहा के मोहल्ले से ज़्यादा शांत है। The comparison word ज़्यादा or कम usually accompanies से when comparing qualities.

Common Mistake — Overusing के बारे में

Error: Adding के बारे में to every sentence about a place, even when simply describing it directly.

Correction: Reserve के बारे में for explicitly introducing or shifting to a topic, such as मैं अपने मोहल्ले के बारे में एक बात बताना चाहती हूँ, rather than using it in every descriptive sentence.
