Volume II, Chapter 5: Unit I Assessment — My Life and Community · Speak and Write Hindi: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Combine your Hindi-learning background, relationships, and community into one connected personal profile.
  2. Maintain accurate pronoun reference and honorific agreement across several connected sentences.
  3. Describe a home, neighborhood, or community using expanded postpositions, oblique forms, and comparison.
  4. Distinguish routine actions from current actions using the habitual-progressive contrast.
  5. Explain obligations and needs using चाहिए, ज़रूरत है, and मुझे ... करना है.
  6. Read and write a connected Devanagari profile of 180-250 words without relying on romanization.
  7. Demonstrate readiness to move from controlled A2 communication into Unit II narration.

Communication Scenario

Priya's Hindi class is preparing a small "language exchange evening" where each learner introduces themselves, their community, and their daily life to a group of new arrivals in the program. Priya has decided to write and present a connected profile that pulls together everything she has practiced so far: her own background with Hindi, the people around her, the neighborhood she lives in, and the routines and responsibilities that fill her week. Vikram, Aman, and Sunita are preparing similar profiles, and they plan to ask each other follow-up questions afterward.

  1. Notice how Priya's profile moves smoothly between four topics — background, relationships, community, and routine — using pronoun reference and connectors rather than restarting with a new name each time.
  2. Notice that no new grammar appears in this chapter. Everything you read and produce here recycles and connects material from Chapters 1-4.
  3. Notice how the follow-up questions test whether a listener has really understood a connected profile, not just isolated sentences.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 5 is the Unit I Assessment for संबंध और दिनचर्या. It introduces no new grammar. Instead, it integrates the four systems developed across Chapters 1-4 — connected self-description, pronoun reference and honorific agreement, community description with expanded postpositions, and the habitual-progressive/obligation system — into a single connected performance.

Coming Into This Chapter

From Chapter 1, a connected learner profile with ability, goals, and simple past experience. From Chapter 2, expanded pronoun reference, honorific agreement, and respectful address. From Chapter 3, oblique expansion, locative postpositions, and comparison. From Chapter 4, the habitual-progressive contrast and the चाहिए / ज़रूरत है / मुझे ... करना है obligation system.

New in This Chapter

No new grammar system. The chapter's only new demand is integration: combining four previously separate topics into one connected, paragraph-level performance with consistent reference and register.

Looking Forward

Unit II begins in Chapter 6, क्या हुआ?, which shifts from description to narration of completed events, building toward productive ने in Chapter 7.

शब्दावली की समीक्षा — Vocabulary Review

Vocabulary Review

This chapter introduces no new productive vocabulary. It recycles and connects vocabulary from Chapters 1-4. Use the table below to check your control before completing the performance assessment.

5.1 Chapter 1 recall — language learning and background

HindiMeaningChapter
सीखना, समझना, बोलनाto learn, to understand, to speakChapter 1
मुश्किल, आसान, लक्ष्यdifficult, easy, goalChapter 1
आत्मविश्वासconfidenceChapter 1

5.2 Chapter 2 recall — relationships and address

HindiMeaningChapter
रिश्ता, दोस्त, सहकर्मीrelationship, friend, coworkerChapter 2
सम्मान, अपनापनrespect, closeness/familiarityChapter 2
जी, शर्मा जी, पिताजीrespectful suffix and title examplesChapter 2

5.3 Chapter 3 recall — home, neighborhood, and community

HindiMeaningChapter
मोहल्ला, मकान, बाज़ारneighborhood, house, marketChapter 3
के पास, के सामने, के बीचnear, in front of, betweenChapter 3
से ज़्यादा, से कम, सबसेmore than, less than, mostChapter 3

5.4 Chapter 4 recall — work, responsibilities, and habits

HindiMeaningChapter
ज़िम्मेदारी, काम, छुट्टीresponsibility, task/work, holiday/leaveChapter 4
आम तौर पर, आजकलusually, these daysChapter 4
व्यस्त, फ़ुर्सतbusy, free timeChapter 4

Assessed load for this chapter: all productive vocabulary from Chapters 1-4, recombined in connected paragraphs. No new items are introduced.

Devanagari and Pronunciation Review

This chapter introduces no new letters, matras, or pronunciation targets. It asks you to sustain accuracy across a longer connected paragraph rather than isolated sentences.

Focus — Reading a full paragraph aloud smoothly

Review aspiration and dental-retroflex contrasts (Chapters 1-4), schwa deletion in infinitives and kinship terms, and natural phrase grouping. When reading a connected paragraph aloud, keep a smooth rhythm within each sentence and a brief pause at each danda (।), rather than pausing after every word.

Focus — Distinguishing habitual, progressive, and obligation forms in connected speech

A single paragraph may move between करता हूँ, कर रहा हूँ, and करना है within a few sentences. Practice hearing and producing these transitions clearly, since Chapter 4 established that time markers such as आम तौर पर and आजकल signal which form is expected.

Grammar Review

No new grammar is introduced in this chapter. The systems below are reviewed together because Unit I's performance task requires you to use them in the same connected text.

5.5 Review — Pronoun reference and honorific agreement (Chapter 2)

Review Pattern — Reference across sentences
मेरी दोस्त सीमा दिल्ली में रहती है। वह एक स्कूल में पढ़ाती है, और उसके माता-पिता भी उसी मोहल्ले में रहते हैं।
My friend Seema lives in Delhi. She teaches at a school, and her parents also live in the same neighborhood.

Notice that सीमा is introduced once by name and then referred to with वह and उसके. Avoid repeating a name across every sentence once reference is clear.

5.6 Review — Oblique forms, locative postpositions, and comparison (Chapter 3)

Review Pattern — Describing a place with comparison
हमारा मोहल्ला बाज़ार के पास है, और यह मेरे पुराने मोहल्ले से ज़्यादा शांत है। यहाँ एक स्कूल भी है, और स्कूल घर के सामने है।
Our neighborhood is near the market, and it is quieter than my old neighborhood. There is also a school here, and the school is in front of the house.

5.7 Review — Habitual-progressive contrast and obligation/need (Chapter 4)

Review Pattern — Routine, current change, and obligation together
मैं आम तौर पर सुबह काम पर जाती हूँ, लेकिन आजकल मैं घर से काम कर रही हूँ। मुझे आज रिपोर्ट भी पूरी करनी है, इसलिए मुझे थोड़ी फ़ुर्सत चाहिए।
I usually go to work in the morning, but these days I am working from home. I also have to finish a report today, so I need a little free time.
Boundary

This chapter does not require productive पड़ना, full subjunctive politeness, complex workplace reporting, or any grammar beyond Chapters 1-4. The assessment target is accurate, connected combination of already-activated systems — not new grammatical range.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Priya presents her connected profile at the language exchange evening, and Sunita asks a follow-up question.

प्रिया नमस्ते सबको। मेरा नाम प्रिया है। मैं पिछले एक साल से हिंदी सीख रही हूँ, और अब मैं रोज़मर्रा की बातें आराम से कर सकती हूँ। मेरे साथ मेरी दोस्त सीमा भी हिंदी सीखती है, और हम अक्सर एक-दूसरे की मदद करते हैं। Hello everyone. My name is Priya. I have been learning Hindi for the past year, and now I can comfortably handle everyday conversations. My friend Seema is also learning Hindi with me, and we often help each other.
प्रिया मैं एक छोटे-से मोहल्ले में रहती हूँ जो बाज़ार के पास है। यह मेरे पुराने मोहल्ले से ज़्यादा शांत है, और यहाँ एक अच्छा पार्क भी है। मेरे घर के सामने एक स्कूल है, और स्कूल के पीछे एक छोटी लाइब्रेरी है। I live in a small neighborhood near the market. It is quieter than my old neighborhood, and there is also a nice park here. There is a school in front of my house, and a small library behind the school.
प्रिया आम तौर पर मैं सुबह दफ़्तर जाती हूँ, लेकिन आजकल मैं घर से काम कर रही हूँ। मुझे इस हफ़्ते एक रिपोर्ट पूरी करनी है, और मुझे थोड़ी मदद की भी ज़रूरत है। इसलिए सीमा और मैं साथ में काम करते हैं। Usually I go to the office in the morning, but these days I am working from home. I have to finish a report this week, and I also need a little help. So Seema and I work together.
सुनीता बहुत अच्छा, प्रिया। एक सवाल — तुम्हें और सीमा को रिपोर्ट कब तक पूरी करनी है? Very good, Priya. One question — by when do you and Seema have to finish the report?
प्रिया हमें शुक्रवार तक रिपोर्ट पूरी करनी है। हम आम तौर पर मिलकर काम करते हैं, तो हमें ज़्यादा मुश्किल नहीं होगी। We have to finish the report by Friday. We usually work together, so it shouldn't be too difficult for us.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया कब से हिंदी सीख रही है? (Since when has Priya been learning Hindi?)
  2. प्रिया का मोहल्ला उसके पुराने मोहल्ले से कैसे अलग है? (How is Priya's neighborhood different from her old neighborhood?)
  3. प्रिया आजकल कहाँ से काम कर रही है, और क्यों? (Where is Priya working from these days, and why?)
  4. प्रिया और सीमा को रिपोर्ट कब तक पूरी करनी है? (By when do Priya and Seema have to finish the report?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note the four topics covered. On the second listen, complete the table.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

विक्रम का परिचय — Vikram's Introduction:

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
विक्रम कब से हिंदी सीख रहा है? (Since when has Vikram been learning Hindi?)______

Reading Practice

Read the connected community profile below, which brings together background, relationships, place description, and routine, then answer the questions.

सुनीता का जीवन और समुदाय — Sunita's Life and Community
My name is Sunita. I have been learning Hindi for two years, and I no longer find it very difficult to speak Hindi. My husband and my daughter also understand Hindi, so at home we often speak in Hindi. We live in a quiet neighborhood near the school. This part of the neighborhood is smaller than our old neighborhood, but here people know each other well. Usually I teach at school from eight in the morning until three in the afternoon, but these days I also have to take care of my daughter, because she is not feeling well. My sister is currently staying with us, so she can help. I hope everything will be normal again next week.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. How long has Sunita been learning Hindi, and who else in her family understands it?
  2. How does Sunita compare her current neighborhood to her old one?
  3. Why is Sunita's routine different this week, and who is helping her?

Writing Workshop

Write your own connected profile titled मेरा जीवन और समुदाय (My Life and Community), combining all four Unit I topics into one text.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected profile of 180-250 words in Devanagari. Your profile must include: (1) your Hindi-learning background and one ability or goal (Chapter 1), (2) a description of at least one relationship with appropriate reference and honorific agreement (Chapter 2), (3) a description of your home, neighborhood, or community including at least one comparison (Chapter 3), and (4) at least one habitual sentence, one progressive sentence, and one obligation/need sentence using चाहिए, ज़रूरत है, or मुझे ... करना है (Chapter 4).

  1. Introduce yourself and your Hindi background. State how long you have studied and one thing you can now do.
  2. Describe a relationship. Introduce a person by name, then continue referring to them with pronouns.
  3. Describe your community. Use at least one locative postposition and one comparison.
  4. Describe your routine. Include a habitual sentence and a progressive sentence that contrast with each other.
  5. State an obligation or need. Use चाहिए, ज़रूरत है, or मुझे ... करना है, checking infinitive agreement where relevant.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • Pronoun reference is clear and consistent; names are not repeated unnecessarily.
  • Honorific agreement is correct for any respected person described.
  • At least one locative postposition and one comparison expression appear correctly.
  • Habitual and progressive forms are clearly distinguished, and time markers match the aspect used.
  • चाहिए, ज़रूरत है, and मुझे ... करना है are used accurately, with correct infinitive agreement where relevant.
  • Spelling, matras, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: four-part self-introduction

Practice saying one connected sentence for each of the four Unit I topics — background, relationship, community, routine — in order, without notes.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: language exchange presentation

Present your written profile aloud to a partner or record yourself. Your partner (or a listener) should ask at least two follow-up questions, similar to Sunita's question in the Model Dialogue.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record your full profile presentation. Listen back and check that your habitual and progressive forms are clearly distinguished and that your pronoun reference stays consistent.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Presenting yourself to a group

Self-introductions in Hindi-speaking contexts often move from broad background to specific relationships and daily life, rather than listing facts in a fixed order. Learners preparing a language-exchange presentation should feel free to adapt the order of the four Unit I topics as long as the result flows naturally and stays connected.

Culture in Context — Community diversity

As Chapters 1-4 have emphasized, Hindi learners, neighborhoods, and households vary widely by region, income, family structure, and motivation for learning Hindi. When writing your own profile, describe your actual situation rather than assuming a single "typical" pattern.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Losing pronoun reference across topics

Error: Restarting each new topic with a full name or noun phrase instead of continuing reference with a pronoun, producing choppy, disconnected sentences.

Correction: Once a person or place has been named, use वह, उसके, यह, or वहाँ to continue the description smoothly, as modeled in the Model Dialogue and Reading passage above.

Common Mistake — Mismatched aspect and time marker

Error: Writing आजकल मैं दफ़्तर जाती हूँ when describing a temporary change, contradicting the time marker आजकल with a habitual verb form.

Correction: आजकल मैं घर से काम कर रही हूँ। As in Chapter 4, match the aspect to the time marker.

Common Mistake — Combining चाहिए and ज़रूरत है in one clause

Error: Writing मुझे मदद चाहिए ज़रूरत है.

Correction: Choose one: मुझे मदद चाहिए or मुझे मदद की ज़रूरत है, as reviewed in Chapter 4.
