Volume II, Chapter 8: Travel and Visits · Speak and Write Hindi: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Narrate a trip or visit using movement verbs in the perfective and in future/plan contexts.
  2. Use से for source and route, and तक for destination or limit, in travel narration.
  3. Use के बाद, से पहले, and के दौरान to relate events in time.
  4. Use common मिलना patterns to describe visits and meetings.
  5. Combine movement narration with the productive ने system from Chapter 7 in a single connected account.
  6. Distinguish a planned trip from a completed trip using future and perfective forms in the same passage.
  7. Read and write a connected travel account with sequence, detail, and at least one problem or reaction.

Communication Scenario

The study group meets again a few days later. Priya just got back from a short weekend trip to visit her नानी (maternal grandmother), and Sunita is planning an upcoming visit of her own. As Priya narrates her trip and Sunita describes her plan, the group moves from Chapter 7's task-by-task reporting into longer travel narration: departure, route, arrival, a visit, and a return, all held together by source, destination, and time-relation postpositions.

  1. Notice that Priya's account mixes completed movement (मैं गई, no ने) with completed transitive actions (मैंने टिकट खरीदी, with ने) in the same narrative.
  2. Notice how से marks where the journey started and तक marks where it ended or how far it went.
  3. Notice how से पहले, के बाद, and के दौरान let speakers place one event before, after, or during another without listing everything in strict order.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 8 continues Unit II, घटना और अनुभव, by taking the productive ने system from Chapter 7 and placing it inside longer, multi-event narration. It adds the postpositions that travel and visit narratives depend on most: source, destination, and time relations.

Coming Into This Chapter

From Chapter 7, learners already use ने productively with a scheduled transitive verb set, apply object agreement with unmarked objects, and recognize agreement blocking with को-marked objects.

New in This Chapter

Movement verbs in perfective and future contexts; से for source and route; तक for destination or limit; के बाद, से पहले, and के दौरान for time relations; common मिलना patterns; and combined planned/completed trip narration.

Looking Forward

Chapter 9, अनुभव और छोटी कहानियाँ, builds on this longer narration by introducing common compound verbs and organizing a short story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Pronunciation and Schwa Deletion

Focus — Schwa deletion in पहुँचना, निकलना, and लौटना

पहुँचना, निकलना, and लौटना each contain an inherent vowel that is not pronounced in ordinary speech. Read them as pahuँchnā, nikalnā, and lauṭnā in natural rhythm rather than sounding out every written अ.

Focus — Place-name and station rhythm

Place names and station-related vocabulary often contain consonant clusters and nasalized vowels, as in स्टेशन and पहुँचना. Keep the nasalization on ँ light and natural, and do not insert an extra syllable where none exists in speech.

Focus — Listening for से and तक in connected speech

से and तक are short, low-stress postpositions that attach closely to the noun before them. Listen for them immediately after a place name to identify where a journey started (से) and where it ended or how far it reached (तक).

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

8.4 Movement verbs in perfective and future contexts

Form: Movement verbs such as जाना, आना, पहुँचना, निकलना, and लौटना are intransitive. As established in Chapter 6 and reinforced in Chapter 7, they never take ने in the perfective, even inside a longer travel narrative that also contains ने-marked transitive sentences.

Language Building Block — Movement in perfective and future
मैं शनिवार को गई। मैं दोपहर को पहुँची। मैं अगले हफ्ते फिर जाऊँगी।
I went on Saturday. I arrived in the afternoon. I will go again next week.

Use: A single account can mix a completed trip (perfective) with an upcoming one (future), as long as the time reference makes the contrast clear.

8.5 स्रोत और मार्ग: से for source and route

Form and meaning: से marks the starting point of a journey or the place something comes from.

Language Building Block — से for source
मैं दिल्ली से गई। ट्रेन स्टेशन से निकली।
I went from Delhi. The train left from the station.

Boundary: This chapter activates से productively only for source and route in travel contexts. Its other functions — instrument, comparison, and manner — remain scheduled for later chapters and should not be over-generalized here.

8.6 गंतव्य और सीमा: तक for destination or limit

Language Building Block — तक for destination/limit
हम जयपुर तक गए। मैं स्टेशन तक पैदल गई।
We went as far as Jaipur. I walked as far as the station.
SentenceFunctionMarker
मैं दिल्ली से गई।where the trip startedसे
मैं आगरा तक गई।where the trip ended / how far it wentतक
मैं दिल्ली से आगरा तक गई।full route, start to endसे ... तक

8.7 समय संबंध: के बाद, से पहले, and के दौरान

Form and meaning: These three time-relation phrases connect two events without requiring a fully separate sentence for each one.

Language Building Block — Time relations
पहुँचने के बाद, मैं नानी से मिली। जाने से पहले, मैंने टिकट खरीदी। यात्रा के दौरान, मैंने एक किताब पढ़ी।
After arriving, I met (my) grandmother. Before going, I bought the ticket. During the trip, I read a book.

Use: के बाद and से पहले attach to a verb's oblique infinitive form (पहुँचने के बाद, जाने से पहले) or to a noun (यात्रा के बाद). के दौरान attaches to a noun and describes something happening within a period of time.

Boundary

This chapter activates के बाद, से पहले, and के दौरान productively only with a small set of familiar verbs and nouns already used in travel narration. Full oblique-infinitive productivity across all verbs is not required here.

8.8 मिलना patterns for visits and meetings

Form: मिलना is intransitive and takes से to mark the person met, not को.

Language Building Block — मिलना with से
मैं अपनी नानी से मिली। हम अपने दोस्तों से मिले।
I met my grandmother. We met our friends.
Boundary

Learners commonly try to mark the person met with को by analogy with English "meet someone." This chapter treats मिलना ... से as a fixed pattern to be learned as a unit rather than derived from a general rule.

8.9 Combining ने with movement and time relations

Use: A connected travel account naturally alternates between intransitive movement (no ने) and transitive completed actions (ने required), often linked by के बाद or से पहले.

Language Building Block — Combined narration
मैं शनिवार को दिल्ली से आगरा तक गई। पहुँचने के बाद, मैंने अपना सामान रखा और अपनी नानी से मिली। जाने से पहले, मैंने कुछ तस्वीरें लीं।
I went from Delhi to Agra on Saturday. After arriving, I put down my things and met my grandmother. Before leaving, I took some photos.
Boundary

This chapter does not require free production with untaught movement or transitive verbs, exhaustive oblique-infinitive formation, or advanced route description. The target is a controlled but connected account combining familiar movement, ने-marked actions, source/destination postpositions, and time-relation phrases.

Model Dialogue

Setting: A few days later. Priya has just come back from a weekend trip.

सुनीता प्रिया, तुम कहाँ गई थीं इस वीकेंड? Priya, where did you go this weekend?
प्रिया मैं दिल्ली से आगरा तक गई। शनिवार को सुबह जल्दी निकली और दोपहर को पहुँची। पहुँचने के बाद, मैं सीधे अपनी नानी से मिली। I went from Delhi to Agra. I set out early Saturday morning and arrived in the afternoon. After arriving, I went straight to meet my grandmother.
सुनीता कैसी रही यात्रा? रास्ते में कोई परेशानी हुई? How was the trip? Was there any trouble on the way?
प्रिया रास्ते में बहुत भीड़ थी, इसलिए थोड़ी देर हुई। लेकिन यात्रा के दौरान मैंने एक किताब पढ़ी, तो समय अच्छे से निकल गया। जाने से पहले, मैंने अपनी नानी के लिए कुछ तस्वीरें भी लीं। There was a lot of crowd on the way, so it was a little late. But during the trip I read a book, so the time passed well. Before leaving, I also took some photos for my grandmother.
सुनीता अच्छा हुआ। मैं भी अगले हफ्ते अपने मामा से मिलने जाऊँगी — वे लखनऊ में रहते हैं। Good. I'm also going to visit my maternal uncle next week — he lives in Lucknow.
प्रिया कब तक रुकोगी वहाँ? Until when will you stay there?
सुनीता शुक्रवार से सोमवार तक। सोमवार को वापस लौटूँगी और सीधे क्लास आऊँगी। From Friday to Monday. I'll return Monday and come straight to class.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया कहाँ से कहाँ तक गई, और उसने पहुँचने के बाद सबसे पहले क्या किया? (Where did Priya go from and to, and what did she do first after arriving?)
  2. रास्ते में क्या परेशानी हुई, और प्रिया ने उस दौरान क्या किया? (What trouble happened on the way, and what did Priya do during that time?)
  3. सुनीता कब से कब तक लखनऊ में रुकेगी? (From when to when will Sunita stay in Lucknow?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note the route and the sequence of events. On the second listen, complete the table.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

विक्रम की यात्रा — Vikram's Trip:

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
विक्रम कहाँ से कहाँ तक गया, और कैसे? (Where did Vikram go from and to, and how?)______
रास्ते में क्या हुआ? (What happened on the way?)______
पहुँचने के बाद विक्रम ने क्या-क्या किया? (What all did Vikram do after arriving?)______
विक्रम कब वापस लौटा? (When did Vikram return?)______

Reading Practice

Read Meera's message to her roommate below, in which she describes an upcoming trip, then answer the questions.

मीरा का संदेश — Meera's Message
Hi! I'm going to Jaipur next Friday to Monday — to meet my grandmother. I bought the train ticket yesterday. I'll leave Delhi in the evening and arrive in Jaipur at night. After arriving, I'll go straight to grandmother's house. I also have some work to do during the trip, so I've taken my laptop. Before leaving I need to buy a few more things — will you come with me as far as the market?

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. When is Meera traveling, and who is she going to see?
  2. What has Meera already done to prepare for the trip?
  3. What does Meera plan to do after arriving, and what does she ask her roommate to do before she leaves?

Writing Workshop

Write a short travel account titled यात्रा और मुलाक़ात describing a trip or visit you have taken, or one you are planning.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected account of 140-200 words in Devanagari. Your account must include: (1) at least one sentence using से for source and तक for destination, (2) at least one sentence using के बाद or से पहले, (3) at least two sentences using ने with scheduled transitive verbs from Chapter 7, (4) at least one sentence using मिलना with से, and (5) one problem or reaction.

  1. Choose your trip. Decide on a completed trip or an upcoming plan.
  2. Map the route. Identify where the trip started (से) and where it ended (तक).
  3. Sequence with time relations. Use से पहले, के बाद, or के दौरान to connect at least two events.
  4. Add a visit. Describe who you met using मिलना ... से.
  5. Add one problem. Mention one difficulty, delay, or reaction on the trip.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • से and तक correctly mark source and destination.
  • Intransitive movement verbs never take ने, even next to ने-marked sentences.
  • Transitive perfective sentences correctly use ने and agree with the unmarked object.
  • मिलना is marked with से, not को.
  • के बाद and से पहले attach correctly to a familiar oblique infinitive or noun.
  • Spelling, matras, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: route and time relations

Using a simple map or list of places, describe a route using से and तक, then add one event with के बाद or से पहले.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: तुम कहाँ गए थे?

With a partner, ask and answer तुम कहाँ गए थे? / आप कहाँ गए थे? about a recent or planned trip. Include at least one मिलना pattern and one ने-marked sentence.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself narrating a trip from start to finish, including departure, route, arrival, one visit, and one problem. Listen back and check your से/तक use and your ने agreement.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Visiting family across distance

Weekend and short-break visits to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives in another city are common across many Hindi-speaking households, though the frequency, distance, and mode of travel vary widely by family, income, and region. Do not assume every learner's family lives close together or far apart.

Culture in Context — Talking about delays and travel problems

Mentioning crowd, weather, or minor delays, as Priya and Vikram do, is a normal part of describing a trip in everyday conversation. Such details are usually shared matter-of-factly rather than as formal complaints, which follow a more institutional register introduced in later chapters.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Adding ने to a movement verb inside a longer narrative

Error: Writing मैंने आगरा गई.

Correction: मैं आगरा गई। Even inside a narrative that also contains ने-marked transitive sentences, intransitive movement verbs like जाना never take ने.

Common Mistake — Marking the person met with को instead of से

Error: Writing मैं अपनी नानी को मिली.

Correction: मैं अपनी नानी से मिली। मिलना takes से to mark the person met, not को.

Common Mistake — Confusing से and तक

Error: Writing मैं आगरा से गई when the intended meaning is "I went as far as Agra."

Correction: मैं आगरा तक गई। से marks where a journey starts; तक marks where it ends or how far it goes.

Common Mistake — Treating के बाद and से पहले as interchangeable

Error: Writing पहुँचने से पहले, मैं नानी से मिली when the meeting happened after arrival.

Correction: पहुँचने के बाद, मैं नानी से मिली। के बाद means "after"; से पहले means "before." Check which event came first before choosing one.
