समीक्षा 2: घटना सुनाना
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Narrate a connected past event using both intransitive and transitive perfective forms.
- Use ने accurately with the scheduled transitive verb set, including correct agreement with unmarked objects.
- Sequence a narrative using time expressions and connectors such as पहले, फिर, उसके बाद, तभी, and आखिर में.
- Describe a trip or visit using source, destination, and time-relation postpositions such as से, तक, से पहले, and के बाद.
- Frame a personal experience using कभी, पहली बार, or एक बार.
- Use at least one common compound verb from Chapter 9 to add nuance to a narrative.
- Read, listen to, and produce a coherent B1-level narrative with background, sequence, completed events, and reaction.
This is a review and assessment chapter. It introduces no new grammar systems. It consolidates and integrates the language taught in Chapters 6-9 into one connected narrative performance.
Communication Scenario
The study group's teacher, Kavita Ma'am, asks each student to prepare a short "story of the week" to share with the class — a real event, a trip, or a memorable experience from recent weeks. Sunita decides to combine two things: a short account of a weekend visit to her cousin's house, and one surprising moment from that visit. As she plans what to say, she realizes she needs everything the group has learned since Chapter 6: how to say what happened, how to use ने correctly, how to talk about a trip, and how to shape a story with a beginning, a turning point, and an end.
- Notice how Sunita's story moves from background (why she went) to sequence (what she did) to a turning point (something unexpected) to a resolution.
- Notice how she recycles ने, travel postpositions, and one compound verb, without needing any new grammar.
- Notice how the class listens and asks natural follow-up questions, just as in earlier chapters.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 10 closes Unit II, घटना और अनुभव. It does not introduce new grammar. Instead, it integrates the four chapters of the unit into one connected narrative performance and prepares learners for Unit III, which shifts toward problems, services, and opinions.
Coming Into This Chapter
From Chapters 6-9, learners can narrate completed events with intransitive and transitive perfective forms, use ने productively with a scheduled verb set, describe trips and visits with source/destination/time postpositions, frame experiences with कभी/पहली बार/एक बार, and use a small set of common compound verbs.
New in This Chapter
Nothing grammatically new. The chapter integrates Chapters 6-9 into a single connected narrative task and provides a checkpoint before Unit III.
Looking Forward
Chapter 11, समस्या और सलाह, begins Unit III by introducing problems, advice, and service interactions, building on the experiencer and चाहिए patterns already familiar from earlier chapters.

| मौसी, मौसा | maternal aunt, maternal aunt's husband | kinship review from Volume I/Ch. 2 |
| हैरान करने वाला | surprising | descriptive phrase, recognition |
No new productive vocabulary domain is introduced in this chapter. All items above are recycled from Chapters 6-9 for integrated use, with only a small amount of receptive classroom-task language added.
Pronunciation and Schwa Deletion Review
Review the pronunciation of perfective forms such as खरीदा, भेजी, and देखा. Notice how the final inherent vowel is not always pronounced the same way it is written, and keep gender agreement audible in your reading.
As in Chapter 9, read compound verbs such as भूल गई and देख लिया as one connected phrase rather than two separate words, with reduced stress on the light verb.
Practice reading a full connected narrative aloud, slowing slightly and raising pitch at तभी to mark the turning point, then settling the pace again for आखिर में. Sustaining this rhythm across several sentences is the main new listening/speaking demand in this chapter.
Grammar Review
No new grammar system is introduced in this chapter. The systems below are reactivated together so that learners can combine them fluently in one connected narrative.
10.3 Intransitive and transitive perfective together
Reminder: Movement verbs like जाना remain intransitive and never take ने; verbs like खाना and करना take ने in the perfective and agree with an unmarked object.
10.4 Travel and time sequencing together
10.5 Experience framing and one compound verb
This chapter does not extend ने, compound verbs, or experience patterns beyond what was activated in Chapters 6-9. It also does not introduce reported speech with कि, conditionals, or relative-correlative structures; those systems begin in Unit III and Unit IV.
Model Dialogue
Setting: Class has gathered for "story of the week." Sunita shares her story; classmates ask follow-up questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- सुनीता कब और कहाँ गई? (When and where did Sunita go?)
- रास्ते में और पहुँचने के बाद उसने क्या किया? (What did she do en route and after arriving?)
- कहानी का हैरानी वाला मोड़ क्या था? (What was the story's surprising turning point?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note the story's background, sequence, turning point, and ending. On the second listen, complete the table.
If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
विकास की कहानी — Vikas's Story:
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| विकास कहाँ और किससे मिलने गया? (Where did Vikas go, and to meet whom?) | ______ |
| वह वहाँ कैसे पहुँचा, और कब? (How and when did he arrive?) | ______ |
| कहानी का हैरानी वाला मोड़ क्या था? (What was the surprising turning point?) | ______ |
| आखिर में समस्या कैसे हल हुई? (How was the problem resolved in the end?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read Priya's message to the class group, written after her own "story of the week," then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Where did Priya go, with whom, and how did they travel?
- What was the turning point in Priya's story, and what did they do about it?
- Why does Priya call this day memorable?
Writing Workshop
Write your own "story of the week" titled एक घटना जो मुझे याद है, describing a real or realistic trip, visit, or event from your own life.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected story of 220-300 words in Devanagari. Your story must include: (1) background explaining when and why the event happened, (2) at least three sentences using ने with scheduled transitive verbs and correct object agreement, (3) at least one travel or visit element using से, तक, से पहले, or के बाद, (4) one experience frame with कभी, पहली बार, or एक बार, (5) one compound verb from Chapter 9, (6) a turning point marked with तभी, and (7) a closing with आखिर में that includes one reaction or one lesson.
- Choose your event. Pick a trip, visit, or memorable occasion from recent weeks.
- Set the background. Say when and why the event happened.
- Narrate the sequence. Use पहले, फिर, and उसके बाद to move the story forward.
- Mark the turning point. Use तभी to introduce something unexpected.
- Close the story. Use आखिर में to resolve the story and add a reaction or lesson.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- The story has clear background, sequence, a turning point, and a closing.
- Transitive perfective sentences correctly use ने and agree with the unmarked object.
- Intransitive movement verbs never take ने.
- At least one travel/visit postposition and one experience frame appear naturally.
- The compound verb adds nuance appropriately rather than being translated word-for-word.
- Spelling, matras, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: follow-up questions
With a partner, take turns telling a one-sentence event (for example, मैं कल बाज़ार गई।) and asking three follow-up questions using कब, कैसे, and फिर क्या हुआ.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: हफ़्ते की कहानी
Tell a partner or small group your "story of the week," including background, sequence, a turning point marked with तभी, and a closing with आखिर में. Listeners should ask at least two follow-up questions.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record yourself telling your full "story of the week" in 1-2 minutes, then listen back and check your use of ने, travel postpositions, and one compound verb.
Culture and Communication
Asking students to share a brief personal update is a common classroom routine in many Hindi language-learning contexts, whether in India or in diaspora communities. The tone is usually light and supportive, and listeners are expected to respond with interest rather than correction.
As in Chapter 9, small mishaps during a family visit, such as forgetting a gift, are usually met with reassurance rather than serious concern, especially among close relatives. This kind of warmth is common but not universal, and varies by family and relationship.
Common Mistakes
Error: Writing मैंने गई.
Correction: मैं गई। जाना is intransitive and never takes ने, even in a longer connected narrative.
Error: Writing मैंने अपनी मौसी की मदद किया.
Correction: मैंने अपनी मौसी की मदद की। The perfective verb agrees with the unmarked feminine object मदद, not with the subject मैं.
Error: Using फिर to link every single sentence in a long story.
Correction: Vary sequencing with पहले, फिर, उसके बाद, तभी, and आखिर में so the story's shape is clear rather than a flat list of events.
Error: Writing कभी पिछले हफ़्ते मैं गई.
Correction: पिछले हफ़्ते मैं गई। or पहली बार पिछले हफ़्ते मैं गई। कभी alone does not combine naturally with a specific dated time expression.
