राय, कारण, और तुलना
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Express an opinion politely using frames such as मुझे लगता है कि... and मेरे विचार में....
- Compare two or more options, places, people, or services using से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे.
- Recognize जितना...उतना comparison patterns in reading and listening.
- Give reasons and results using क्योंकि, इसलिए, and इस वजह से.
- Agree and disagree with appropriate softening, using expressions such as मैं सहमत हूँ and मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता.
- Make a simple recommendation supported by at least two reasons.
- Write a short review or opinion paragraph comparing two options.
Communication Scenario
With the meeting rescheduled to Tuesday, Arjun, Priya, Rohan, and Neha now need to choose where to hold their group project session — the college library, a nearby café, or a friend's apartment. Each person has a different opinion, and the group must weigh convenience, noise, cost, and internet access before agreeing on a recommendation. Priya also wants to know which laptop Neha ended up buying, since Neha compared two options online before deciding.
- Notice how each speaker introduces an opinion politely before comparing the options.
- Notice how reasons connect directly to the recommendation using क्योंकि and इसलिए.
- Notice how disagreement is softened rather than stated bluntly.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 14 continues Unit III, समस्या, सेवा, और विचार. It builds directly on Chapter 13's reported information with कि, extending the same clause pattern into opinion frames.
Coming Into This Chapter
From Chapter 13, learners already control reported information with कहा कि and बताया कि, pronoun shift in reporting, and the contrast between casual messaging and standard written Hindi.
New in This Chapter
Learners extend the कि-clause into opinion frames such as मुझे लगता है कि..., add comparison with से ज़्यादा/से कम/सबसे, and practice reasoned agreement and disagreement.
Looking Forward
Chapter 15, the Unit III review, integrates problem-solving, advice, reported information, and opinion exchange into one connected performance task.
Core Vocabulary
14.1 Opinions and Stance
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| राय | opinion | feminine noun; मेरी राय में "in my opinion" |
| विचार | thought, view | masculine noun; more formal than राय |
| लगना | to seem, to feel | experiencer verb; core of मुझे लगता है कि... |
| मानना | to believe, to consider | transitive; used in मेरा मानना है कि... |
| सहमत होना | to agree | compound; मैं सहमत हूँ |
| असहमत होना | to disagree | compound; formal register |
14.2 Comparison
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| से ज़्यादा | more than | follows the noun being compared to |
| से कम | less than | follows the noun being compared to |
| सबसे अच्छा/अच्छी | the best | superlative frame; agrees with the noun |
| सुविधाजनक | convenient | invariable adjective |
| सस्ता / महँगा | cheap / expensive | variable adjectives |
| शांत | quiet, calm | invariable adjective; useful for places |
14.3 Reasons and Results
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| क्योंकि | because | introduces the reason clause, placed after the main clause |
| इसलिए | therefore, so | introduces the result clause |
| इस वजह से | for this reason | slightly more formal alternative to इसलिए |
| वजह / कारण | reason | वजह feminine, everyday; कारण masculine, more formal |
| फ़ायदा / नुकसान | advantage / disadvantage | useful in comparison and recommendation |
14.4 Recommendation and Response
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| सुझाव देना | to suggest, to recommend | light verb; मेरा सुझाव है कि... |
| शायद | maybe, perhaps | softens an opinion or suggestion |
| लेकिन | but | common softener before disagreement |
| मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता | I don't think so | polite disagreement formula |
| हो सकता है, लेकिन... | that may be, but... | concessive softener before disagreement |
Receptive vocabulary: जितना...उतना comparison patterns, review-style vocabulary such as रेटिंग and समीक्षा, and stronger formal disagreement expressions may appear in reading or listening; they remain recognition-level at this stage.
Pronunciation and Schwa Deletion
In connected opinion speech, listen for the small stance-marking words that come early in the sentence, such as मुझे लगता है or शायद, since these signal that an opinion (not a fact) is about to follow.
Notice that सुविधाजनक is read as approximately su-vi-dhaa-ja-nak, with the final inherent vowel of नक retained lightly at the end of the word, while महँगा is read as approximately meh-ngaa, with the nasalized vowel carried across the syllable boundary rather than pronounced as a separate n sound.
Each of these connectors introduces a short pause in natural speech: a brief breath before कि, a slightly longer one before क्योंकि when it begins a new reason, and a falling pitch on इसलिए when it introduces a conclusion.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
14.5 Opinion frames with कि
Chapter 13 introduced कि for reporting what someone said. This chapter uses the same clause pattern to introduce a personal opinion.
Form: [opinion frame] + कि + [complete clause with subject, verb, and its own agreement]. मुझे लगता है कि... is the everyday default. मेरे विचार में... does not require कि and instead precedes a normal complete sentence. मेरा मानना है कि... is somewhat more formal and works well in writing.
14.6 Comparison with से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे
Form: [X] + [Y] + से ज़्यादा/कम + [adjective] + है compares X to Y. The item after which you place से is the standard of comparison. For the superlative, use सबसे immediately before the adjective. Variable adjectives such as अच्छा still agree with the noun being described; invariable adjectives such as सुविधाजनक and शांत do not change form.
Recognition note: जितना...उतना ("the more... the more...") appears in some reading and listening passages, as in जितना सस्ता, उतना अच्छा ("the cheaper, the better"). This pattern is recognition-only at this stage.
14.7 Reasons with क्योंकि and results with इसलिए
Form and use: क्योंकि normally follows the main clause and introduces the reason: [result] + क्योंकि + [reason]. इसलिए works in the opposite direction: [reason] + इसलिए + [result]. इस वजह से can replace इसलिए in slightly more formal writing, such as a written recommendation.
14.8 Agreement and disagreement
Use: Agreement can be direct: मैं सहमत हूँ. Disagreement is normally softened rather than stated as a flat contradiction. A concessive opener such as हो सकता है, लेकिन... acknowledges the other person's point before offering a different view. मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता is the everyday polite way to disagree; it is gentler than a direct denial.
14.9 Making a recommendation
Form: मेरा सुझाव है कि... + [subjunctive-like verb form, e.g., चुनें] is a formulaic recommendation frame at this level. Support the recommendation with at least one reason using क्योंकि.
This chapter does not introduce advanced argumentation, debate rhetoric, statistical claims, formal academic essay structure, or the full productive range of comparative constructions. Those extensions belong to later volumes.
Model Dialogue
Setting: Arjun, Priya, Rohan, and Neha discuss where to hold their group project session.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- रोहन लाइब्रेरी में मिलने से क्यों असहमत है? (Why does Rohan disagree with meeting in the library?)
- समूह ने आख़िर में क्या फ़ैसला किया? (What did the group decide in the end?)
- अर्जुन ने कौन-सा लैपटॉप खरीदा और क्यों? (Which laptop did Arjun buy, and why?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note the general topic. On the second listen, complete the table.
If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
दो रेस्तराँ की तुलना — Comparing Two Restaurants:
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| वक्ता को कौन-सा रेस्तराँ ज़्यादा पसंद है, और क्यों? (Which restaurant does the speaker prefer, and why?) | ______ |
| मसाला हाउस का क्या फ़ायदा है? (What is the advantage of Masala House?) | ______ |
| वक्ता किस स्थिति में स्वाद जाने की सलाह देता है? (In what situation does the speaker recommend going to Swaad?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short online review below, then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- What opinion does the reviewer express about the app?
- What two reasons does the reviewer give?
- How does the reviewer address the app's one disadvantage?
Writing Workshop
Write a short recommendation titled मेरी सिफ़ारिश, comparing two options (places, services, products, or activities) and recommending one.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected text of 100-150 words in standard Devanagari, in complete sentences. Your text must include: (1) a clear opinion using an opinion frame such as मुझे लगता है कि..., (2) at least one comparison using से ज़्यादा, से कम, or सबसे, (3) at least two reasons using क्योंकि and/or इसलिए, and (4) a final recommendation.
- Choose your topic. Pick two options you can genuinely compare.
- State your opinion. Open with a clear opinion frame.
- Compare the options. Use at least one comparison structure.
- Give your reasons. Support your opinion with क्योंकि and इसलिए.
- Close with a recommendation. State clearly which option you recommend.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- The opinion frame and its कि-clause form a complete, natural sentence.
- The comparison structure is used correctly and agrees where needed.
- At least two reasons are expressed clearly.
- The recommendation is stated directly at the end.
- Spelling, matras, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: comparing two items
With a partner, compare two familiar objects, places, or foods using से ज़्यादा, से कम, and सबसे.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: राय और सिफ़ारिश
In a small group, discuss where to hold a study session, which of two options to choose for a shared task, or which product to buy. Each person must give an opinion, at least one reason, and either agree or politely disagree with someone else's opinion.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record yourself giving a one-minute recommendation comparing two options you know well, including at least two reasons and a clear final recommendation.
Culture and Communication
Direct contradiction is often softened in Hindi conversation, especially among peers who want to preserve a comfortable relationship. Openers such as हो सकता है, लेकिन... acknowledge the other person's view before offering a different one. This is a matter of social ease rather than a fixed rule, and directness varies by relationship, setting, and individual style.
In many everyday Hindi-speaking contexts, a group decision — such as where to study or which service to use — is often reached by weighing everyone's stated reasons together rather than by one person deciding alone. Giving a reason, not just an opinion, is a normal and expected part of the conversation.
Common Mistakes
Error: कैफ़े से ज़्यादा लाइब्रेरी महँगी है when the intended meaning is that the café is more expensive than the library.
Correction: कैफ़े लाइब्रेरी से ज़्यादा महँगा है। The item placed directly before से is the standard being compared to, not the subject of the sentence.
Error: Writing मुझे लगता है लाइब्रेरी अच्छी जगह है without कि.
Correction: मुझे लगता है कि लाइब्रेरी अच्छी जगह है। As with reported speech in Chapter 13, कि is required to introduce the clause in standard written Hindi.
Error: Responding to an opinion with only नहीं, यह ग़लत है। ("No, that's wrong.")
Correction: हो सकता है, लेकिन मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता, क्योंकि... Softening the disagreement and giving a reason keeps the exchange polite and constructive.
