Volume II, Chapter 16: Conditions and Possibilities · Speak and Write Hindi: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Form and use controlled अगर...तो sentences to talk about conditions and their consequences.
  2. Recognize जब...तब in limited, time-based conditional contexts.
  3. Combine future forms, ability (सकना), need (चाहिए, ज़रूरी है), and obligation (पड़ना) inside a conditional plan.
  4. Use नहीं तो to state a consequence if something is not done.
  5. Recognize या and वरना as connectors for alternatives.
  6. Negotiate a backup plan with a partner or group, weighing at least two conditions.
  7. Write a short plan with contingencies in standard Devanagari.

Communication Scenario

Arjun, Priya, Rohan, and Neha finally agreed in Chapter 15 to meet at Rohan's apartment on Thursday to finish their group project. Now they need to plan for things that could go wrong: bad weather, a slow internet connection, someone arriving late, or not finishing the slides on time. Before Thursday, the group exchanges messages to agree on a plan with backup options for each possible problem.

  1. Notice how each condition is introduced with अगर and its consequence with तो.
  2. Notice how नहीं तो states what will happen if a needed action is skipped.
  3. Notice how future forms, ability, need, and obligation from earlier chapters now appear inside conditional sentences.
  4. Notice how the group reaches a plan through polite negotiation, recycling reasoning skills from Chapter 14 and 15.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 16 opens Unit IV, जुड़ा हुआ संवाद. It is the first chapter after the Unit III review to introduce a new major grammar system.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners bring forward future forms, ability with सकना, need with चाहिए and ज़रूरी है, obligation with पड़ना, and the reasoning and recommendation patterns consolidated in Chapter 15.

New in This Chapter

Controlled अगर...तो conditionals become productive for the first time. जब...तब is introduced receptively, and नहीं तो is introduced as a formulaic consequence marker.

Looking Forward

Chapter 17, जो लोग, जो बातें, introduces जो...वह relative-correlative description, building on the clause-linking awareness developed here.

शब्दावली — Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary

These items support conditions, plans, alternatives, and contingencies. Vocabulary from Chapters 11-15 continues to recycle throughout this chapter.

16.1 Conditions and Possibilities

HindiMeaning
शर्तcondition
संभावनाpossibility
योजनाplan
विकल्पoption, alternative
तैयारीpreparation
परिणामresult, consequence
जोखिमrisk
फ़ैसलाdecision

16.2 Scheduling and Contingency Language

HindiMeaning
बारिश होनाto rain
इंटरनेट/कनेक्शन ख़राब होनाinternet/connection to go bad
देर से आनाto arrive late
समय पर पूरा होनाto be finished on time
दूसरी जगहanother place
बैकअप योजनाbackup plan
पहले से बतानाto tell in advance
तैयार रहनाto stay ready/prepared

Receptive support: वरना ("otherwise") is introduced as a recognition-only synonym close in meaning to नहीं तो; learners do not need to produce it this chapter.

Pronunciation and Orthography Focus

Clause boundary rhythm in conditional sentences

An अगर...तो sentence has two clear parts. Group the अगर-clause together, pause briefly, and then group the तो-clause together: अगर बारिश हुई, || तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे. Do not run the two clauses into one unbroken stream, and do not pause in the middle of either clause.

Schwa deletion in modal and future forms

Notice the dropped inherent vowel in forms such as पड़ेगा (approximately pa-regaa, not pa-ra-ega) and करना पड़ेगा. Review this pattern from Chapter 15's पड़ेगी and apply it consistently to future obligation forms in this chapter.

Intonation in negotiation and planning

नहीं तो often carries a slightly falling, matter-of-fact tone rather than a sharp or threatening one — it states a practical consequence, not a warning. Compare the calm tone of हमें जल्दी शुरू करना होगा, नहीं तो समय पर पूरा नहीं होगा with an unnecessarily harsh reading of the same sentence.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

16.3 अगर...तो — Stating a Condition and Its Consequence

Language Building Block
अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे।
If it rains, we will sit inside.

Form: अगर introduces the condition clause; तो introduces the consequence clause. The condition clause commonly uses a perfective, habitual, or simple verb form to describe the possible situation, while the consequence clause commonly uses a future or modal form.

Meaning: The structure connects a possible situation to what will happen, what someone should do, or what someone needs, if that situation occurs.

Use: अगर...तो is used across everyday planning, advice, and practical decision-making. तो may sometimes be omitted in fast informal speech, but learners should include it in this chapter's controlled writing and speaking tasks.

Condition (अगर...)Consequence (तो...)
अगर इंटरनेट ख़राब हुआतो हम फ़ोन से जुड़ जाएँगे
अगर कोई देर से आयातो हम बिना उसके शुरू कर देंगे
अगर स्लाइड्स समय पर तैयार नहीं हुईंतो हमें कल फिर मिलना पड़ेगा
अगर तुम्हें कोई परेशानी होतो मुझे पहले से बताना

16.4 जब...तब — Time-Based Conditions (Receptive)

Language Building Block — Receptive
जब सब आ जाएँगे, तब हम शुरू करेंगे।
When everyone arrives, then we will begin.

जब...तब resembles अगर...तो but focuses on timing rather than possibility: it connects "when X happens" to "then Y happens." At this stage, learners should recognize जब...तब in listening and reading and may reuse a small number of formulaic examples, but full productive control is not required until later chapters.

16.5 Future, Ability, Need, and Obligation Inside Conditions

The consequence clause of a conditional sentence is where earlier systems now combine:

  • अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम बैठेंगे। (future)
  • अगर तुम्हें देर हो, तो तुम बाद में आ सकते हो। (ability/permission with सकना)
  • अगर काम ज़्यादा हुआ, तो हमें एक और दिन चाहिए। (need with चाहिए)
  • अगर आज पूरा नहीं हुआ, तो कल फिर मिलना पड़ेगा। (obligation with पड़ना)

Learners should practice choosing the correct consequence form — future, ability, need, or obligation — based on the intended meaning, rather than defaulting to one pattern for every sentence.

16.6 नहीं तो — Stating What Happens Without an Action

Language Building Block
हमें जल्दी शुरू करना होगा, नहीं तो समय पर पूरा नहीं होगा।
We will have to start early, otherwise it won't be finished on time.

नहीं तो is introduced here as a formulaic consequence marker meaning "otherwise" or "if not." It follows a statement of what should be done and states what will happen if that action is skipped. Learners should treat नहीं तो as a fixed connector for now rather than analyzing it clause by clause.

16.7 या and वरना — Alternatives (Recognition)

या ("or") connects two options in a plan, as in हम ऑनलाइन मिलेंगे या रोहन के घर. वरना is recognized as a close synonym of नहीं तो in reading and listening. Neither requires productive analysis beyond recognizing its function as a connector.

Boundary

This chapter does not introduce hypothetical or counterfactual conditionals (such as "if I had known..."), subjunctive mood, or advanced concessive structures. Those systems remain outside Volume II.

Model Dialogue

Setting: The group messages each other on Wednesday night to plan for Thursday's meeting at Rohan's apartment.

नेहा कल बारिश हो सकती है। अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम कैसे आएँगे? It might rain tomorrow. If it rains, how will we come?
रोहन कोई बात नहीं। अगर बारिश हुई, तो मेरे घर के पास ही मेट्रो स्टेशन है, वहाँ से सिर्फ़ पाँच मिनट पैदल है। No problem. If it rains, there's a metro station right near my place, it's only a five-minute walk from there.
अर्जुन ठीक है, लेकिन अगर मुझे ऑफ़िस से देर हो गई, तो मैं थोड़ा लेट पहुँचूँगा। क्या हम मेरे बिना शुरू कर सकते हैं? Okay, but if I'm late from the office, I'll arrive a bit late. Can we start without me?
प्रिया हाँ, बिल्कुल। अगर तुम्हें देर हो, तो हम स्लाइड्स पर काम शुरू कर देंगे, और तुम आकर जुड़ जाना। Yes, of course. If you're late, we'll start working on the slides, and you can join in when you arrive.
नेहा एक बात और — अगर हमारा काम कल पूरा नहीं हुआ, तो क्या होगा? प्रेजेंटेशन शुक्रवार को है। One more thing — if our work isn't finished tomorrow, what will happen? The presentation is on Friday.
रोहन अगर पूरा नहीं हुआ, तो हमें शुक्रवार सुबह जल्दी फिर मिलना पड़ेगा। हमें आज ही अच्छी तैयारी करनी चाहिए, नहीं तो कल समय कम पड़ेगा। If it's not finished, we'll have to meet again early Friday morning. We should prepare well today itself, otherwise we'll run short on time tomorrow.
प्रिया ठीक कहा। तो अब हर किसी को अपना हिस्सा आज रात तैयार कर लेना चाहिए, नहीं तो कल मुश्किल होगी। Well said. So everyone should get their part ready tonight, otherwise tomorrow will be difficult.
अर्जुन ठीक है, मैं अभी अपना हिस्सा शुरू करता हूँ। कल मिलते हैं — बारिश हो या न हो! Okay, I'll start my part now. See you all tomorrow — whether it rains or not!

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. अगर बारिश हुई, तो समूह क्या करेगा? (If it rains, what will the group do?)
  2. अगर अर्जुन को देर हो गई, तो बाकी लोग क्या करेंगे? (If Arjun is late, what will the others do?)
  3. रोहन के अनुसार, अगर काम आज पूरा नहीं हुआ, तो क्या होगा, और वह आज रात क्या सुझाव देता है? (According to Rohan, if the work isn't finished today, what will happen, and what does he suggest for tonight?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud twice. On the first listen, note the general topic. On the second listen, complete the table.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage slowly at first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

एक वॉइस मैसेज — A Voice Message:

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
अगर मौसम ख़राब हुआ, तो समूह क्या करेगा? (If the weather is bad, what will the group do?)______
अगर किसी का इंटरनेट ख़राब हुआ, तो क्या होगा? (If someone's internet fails, what will happen?)______
वक्ता आज रात सबसे क्या करने के लिए कहती है, और क्यों? (What does the speaker ask everyone to do tonight, and why?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short planning note below, then answer the questions.

योजना नोट — Planning Note
Thursday's plan: Time: 5 pm, Rohan's home. If it rains, come by metro — the station is five minutes from the house. If someone is late, the rest will start without them. If the internet fails, phone data will work fine. If the work isn't finished today, we'll meet again Friday morning at 8. Everyone needs to prepare their part tonight, otherwise there won't be enough time tomorrow.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. What are the four conditions listed in the note, and what consequence is given for each?
  2. What does the group plan to do if the work is not finished on Thursday?
  3. Why does the note ask everyone to prepare their part tonight?

Writing Workshop

Write a short contingency plan titled मेरी योजना और बैकअप विकल्प ("My Plan and Backup Options") for a real or imagined event of your own — a trip, a study session, a party, or a work deadline.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected text of 150-220 words in standard Devanagari, in complete sentences. Your text must include: (1) a brief description of the plan or event; (2) at least two conditions using अगर...तो, each with a clear consequence involving a future, ability, need, or obligation form; (3) at least one use of नहीं तो; and (4) a closing sentence stating what you hope will happen.

  1. Introduce the plan. Briefly describe the event, time, and place.
  2. State your first condition. Use अगर...तो to describe a possible problem and its solution.
  3. State your second condition. Use a different consequence type (future, ability, need, or obligation) from the first.
  4. Add a नहीं तो sentence. State what should be done and what will happen otherwise.
  5. Close with a hope or expectation. Say what you expect or hope will happen overall.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • Each अगर-clause is followed by a तो-clause.
  • The two conditions use different consequence types (not the same pattern twice).
  • नहीं तो is used correctly to state a consequence of inaction.
  • Verb forms agree correctly in gender and number where relevant.
  • Spelling, matras, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: completing conditions

With a partner, take turns giving an अगर-clause and having the other person supply a logical तो-clause, then switch roles.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: बैकअप योजना

In a small group, plan a real or imagined event together. Each person must propose at least one condition and consequence, and the group must agree on at least one नहीं तो statement before finalizing the plan.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing a plan for an upcoming event, including at least two conditions with consequences and one नहीं तो statement.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Planning around uncertainty

In many everyday Hindi-speaking contexts, plans are commonly stated with built-in flexibility rather than presented as fixed and final. Naming a backup option in advance, as this group does, is often seen as thoughtful and considerate rather than as a sign of doubt about the plan.

Culture in Context — Softened urgency

नहीं तो statements are typically delivered as calm, practical reminders rather than warnings, especially among peers working on a shared task. Notice how Rohan and Priya frame the need to prepare tonight as a shared responsibility rather than as pressure placed on one person.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Dropping तो

Error: अगर बारिश हुई, हम अंदर बैठेंगे without तो in careful written Hindi.

Correction: अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। In this chapter's controlled writing tasks, keep तो to mark the consequence clause clearly.

Common Mistake — Using the same consequence form every time

Error: Writing every तो-clause in the future tense, such as तो हम करेंगे, तो हम जाएँगे, तो हम बताएँगे, without variation.

Correction: Vary the consequence with ability, need, or obligation where appropriate, such as तो हमें एक और दिन चाहिए or तो हमें फिर मिलना पड़ेगा, as modeled in this chapter.

Common Mistake — Confusing नहीं तो with a simple negative

Error: Treating नहीं तो as if it simply means "not," producing an unclear sentence such as हमें तैयारी करनी चाहिए नहीं तो with no consequence stated.

Correction: नहीं तो must be followed by the consequence of not acting: हमें तैयारी करनी चाहिए, नहीं तो कल समय कम पड़ेगा।

Chapter Review

भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)

1. Return to the Model Dialogue and Reading passage and answer in English:

  1. List the four conditions the group plans for, and their consequences.
  2. Why does the group agree to prepare tonight rather than waiting until tomorrow?

भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)

1. Complete each sentence with an appropriate consequence:

  1. अगर कल बारिश हुई, तो ______।
  2. अगर हमें और समय चाहिए, तो हमें ______।
  3. आज ही तैयारी कर लो, नहीं तो ______।

2. Write two original अगर...तो sentences about your own week, using two different consequence types (future, ability, need, or obligation).

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. Return to the planning note above and identify which condition addresses a technology problem and which addresses a scheduling problem.

भाग D — लेखन (Writing)

1. Write your 150-220 word text मेरी योजना और बैकअप विकल्प, following all four required elements from the Writing Workshop above.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. Role-play or record the group-planning task described in the Speaking Practice section above.

Cumulative Review

This chapter recycles future forms, ability with सकना, need with चाहिए and ज़रूरी है, and obligation with पड़ना from earlier chapters, while introducing controlled अगर...तो conditionals for the first time.

Practical Performance Task

मेरी योजना और बैकअप विकल्प — My Plan and Backup Options

Complete the following connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the voice message above and complete the listening table.
  2. Speak in a role-play or recorded planning task, as described in the Speaking Practice section.
  3. Read the planning note above and answer the comprehension questions.
  4. Write your own 150-220 word text titled मेरी योजना और बैकअप विकल्प, following the Writing Workshop checklist.
  5. Edit your written text for अगर...तो accuracy, consequence variety, नहीं तो use, and Devanagari accuracy.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Conditions and consequencesAt least two accurate अगर...तो sentences with clear, logical consequences.
Consequence varietyConsequences drawn from at least two different types: future, ability, need, or obligation.
नहीं तो useAt least one accurate, logically complete नहीं तो statement.
OrganizationA clear plan introduction and closing statement of hope or expectation.
Devanagari and pronunciationCorrect spelling and punctuation; intelligible clause-boundary rhythm in speaking.

This task evaluates controlled, practical use of conditionals for everyday planning. It does not require hypothetical, counterfactual, or subjunctive structures, which remain outside Volume II.

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. If it rains, the group will still meet at Rohan's; they will come by metro, which is a five-minute walk from his home.
  2. If Arjun is late, the rest of the group will start working on the slides without him, and he will join when he arrives.
  3. If the work is not finished today, they will have to meet again early Friday morning; Rohan suggests everyone prepare their part well tonight so they don't run short on time tomorrow.

Listening

  • If the weather is bad, the group will still meet at Rohan's, just leaving a little earlier.
  • If someone's internet fails, that person can join by phone.
  • The speaker asks everyone to prepare their own part tonight, because otherwise tomorrow will be difficult.

Reading — Comprehension

  1. (1) Rain → come by metro; (2) someone late → the rest start without them; (3) internet fails → use phone data; (4) work not finished today → meet again Friday at 8 am.
  2. If the work is not finished on Thursday, the group will meet again Friday morning at 8.
  3. The note asks everyone to prepare tonight because otherwise there won't be enough time the next day.

Chapter Review — भाग B

  1. Sample answers: (a) तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। (b) तो हमें एक और दिन चाहिए। (c) नहीं तो कल समय कम पड़ेगा।
  2. Sample sentences: अगर मुझे समय मिला, तो मैं किताब पढ़ूँगी। अगर मौसम ठीक हुआ, तो हम बाहर जा सकते हैं।

Looking Ahead

अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now

You can state conditions and their consequences with अगर...तो, recognize जब...तब in context, combine future, ability, need, and obligation inside a plan, use नहीं तो for consequences of inaction, and negotiate a backup plan with others.

आगे बढ़ते हुए: अध्याय 17 — Continuing on: Chapter 17

Chapter 17, जो लोग, जो बातें, builds on the clause-linking practiced here by introducing जो...वह relative-correlative structures for describing and identifying people, places, and things.
