पढ़ाई, करियर, और लक्ष्य
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Discuss your education, work experience, skills, and professional goals in a connected account.
- Describe qualifications and responsibilities clearly and accurately.
- Express purpose and motivation using के लिए, ताकि, and infinitive-based patterns such as सीखने के लिए.
- State intentions and decisions using का इरादा है, निर्णय लिया, and controlled सोचना patterns.
- Express obligation and expectation with चाहिए, पड़ना, and ज़रूरी है.
- Compare educational or career options using से बेहतर, से ज़्यादा, कम, and सबसे.
- Ask and answer interview-style questions about study, work, and goals.
- Write a formal-adjacent statement of goals or professional learner profile.
Communication Scenario
At the conversation group's third meeting, Meera जी introduces a new activity: each member will describe their educational and career path so far, explain one current goal, and answer a partner's interview-style questions about it. Priya is finishing a certificate program and considering two job offers; Kabir is thinking about switching fields and needs to explain his reasoning to skeptical family members.
- Notice how Priya uses के लिए and ताकi to explain why she is taking a particular course of action, not just what she is doing.
- Notice how Kabir uses से बेहतर and सबसे to compare his two options and justify his decision to people who need convincing.
- Notice that both speakers use चाहिए, पड़ना, and ज़रूरी है to distinguish what they personally feel obligated to do from what circumstances require of them.
- Notice that reference tracking and honorific agreement from Chapter 2 continue to operate here — this chapter adds purpose, intention, obligation, and comparison on top of that foundation, not in place of it.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 3 continues Unit I, पहचान, अनुभव, और बदलता जीवन, moving from Chapter 2's relationship narratives toward education, work, and personal goals.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners arrive with expanded paragraph-level reference tracking, honorific agreement, `को` for recipients and experiencers, and causal/relational postpositional frames such as की वजह से and के कारण from Chapter 2. Volume II work and study vocabulary, ability, and obligation are also assumed as available foundations.
New in This Chapter
Purpose expressions with के लिए, ताकि, and infinitive-based patterns; intention and decision language with का इरादा है, निर्णय लिया, and सोचना; obligation and expectation with चाहिए, पड़ना, and ज़रूरी है; and expanded comparison with से बेहतर, से ज़्यादा, कम, and सबसे for evaluating options.
Looking Forward
Chapter 4, शहर, समुदाय, और बदलाव, shifts this purpose-and-comparison discourse toward describing places and communities, introducing change-over-time expressions and cause-result connectors at the community level.
Core Vocabulary
This chapter's productive vocabulary centers on education, career, skills, and professional goals.
3.1 Education and Training
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| डिग्री | degree |
| कोर्स / पाठ्यक्रम | course |
| प्रशिक्षण | training |
| कौशल | skill |
| अनुभव | experience |
| परियोजना | project |
| प्रमाणपत्र | certificate |
3.2 Work and Career
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| आवेदन | application |
| साक्षात्कार | interview |
| कार्यक्रम / शेड्यूल | schedule |
| ज़िम्मेदारी | responsibility |
| पद | position, post |
| वेतन | salary |
| क्षेत्र | field (of work/study) |
3.3 Goals, Decisions, and Improvement
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| लक्ष्य | goal |
| योजना | plan |
| निर्णय | decision |
| अवसर | opportunity |
| चुनौती | challenge |
| सुधार | improvement |
| इरादा | intention |
Receptive vocabulary: योग्यता (qualification, formal), पदोन्नति (promotion), कार्यभार (workload), selected English-origin professional terms such as रिज़्यूमे and इंटरव्यू — recognize these in reading; productive use is not required this chapter.
Recycled vocabulary: Volume II work/study vocabulary, ability and desire expressions, and formal request language remain available and should be reused, not retaught.
Pronunciation and Orthography Focus
Words such as कोर्स, प्रोजेक्ट, and इंटरव्यू appear naturally in ordinary Hindi professional conversation. Pronounce them with Hindi rhythm and vowel quality rather than switching into an English accent mid-sentence.
Words such as ज़िम्मेदारी, प्रशिक्षण, and phrases like सीखने के लिए combine familiar schwa-deletion patterns with formal or derived shapes. Read each form slowly first, then in the connected sentences of the dialogue and reading.
When answering an interview-style question, group each reason or example into its own breath phrase rather than running everything together. A short pause after इसलिए or क्योंकि helps the listener follow your explanation.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
3.4 Purpose with के लिए, ताकि, and Infinitives
के लिए after an infinitive expresses purpose: मैं यह कोर्स नई नौकरी पाने के लिए कर रहा हूँ ("I'm taking this course in order to get a new job"). ताकि introduces a purpose clause with its own subject and verb, often followed by a subjunctive-like form: मैं मेहनत कर रही हूँ ताकि मुझे बेहतर पद मिल सके ("I'm working hard so that I can get a better position").
| Pattern | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| infinitive + के लिए | purpose, same subject | नया कौशल सीखने के लिए मैंने यह कोर्स चुना। |
| ताकि + subjunctive-like verb | purpose, subject may differ | मैं जल्दी आया ताकि हम पूरी बात कर सकें। |
Form: This sentence links a past action (लिया), a purpose clause with ताकि, and a present reflective stance (मुझे लगता है कि...) reactivated from Chapter 1.
Meaning: The purpose clause explains why the action was taken, not merely what was done.
Use: When explaining an educational or career choice, connect the action to its purpose before reflecting on the outcome.
3.5 Intention and Decision
| Frame | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| का इरादा है | has the intention to | मेरा इरादा है कि मैं अगले साल तक यह कोर्स पूरा कर लूँ। |
| निर्णय लिया | made a decision (completed) | उसने नई नौकरी लेने का निर्णय लिया। |
| सोच रहा/रही हूँ | am considering | मैं क्षेत्र बदलने के बारे में सोच रहा हूँ। |
Use these frames in controlled patterns. Do not treat सोचना here as a general verb "to think" in every context — in this frame, it specifically communicates that a decision is still being weighed.
3.6 Obligation and Expectation
| Frame | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| चाहिए | should, personal/moral obligation | मुझे और अभ्यास करना चाहिए। |
| पड़ना | circumstance forces the action | मुझे हफ़्ते में तीन बार जाना पड़ता है। |
| ज़रूरी है | necessary, often impersonal | इस पद के लिए अनुभव ज़रूरी है। |
Distinguish these carefully: चाहिए expresses what someone feels they should do; पड़ना expresses what circumstances require regardless of preference; ज़रूरी है states a general or institutional requirement without attributing feeling to any one person.
3.7 Comparing Options
| Frame | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| से बेहतर | better than | यह नौकरी पिछली नौकरी से बेहतर है। |
| से ज़्यादा | more than | यहाँ वेतन वहाँ से ज़्यादा है। |
| से कम | less than | यह ज़िम्मेदारी पहले से कम है। |
| सबसे | the most (superlative) | यह मेरे लिए सबसे अच्छा विकल्प है। |
This chapter does not introduce new relative-correlative structures, new aspectual systems, or full subjunctive analysis. ताकि and सकें-type forms appear as controlled formulaic patterns here; broader conditional and hypothetical work begins in Chapter 13.
Model Dialogue
Setting: At the conversation group's third meeting, Priya and Kabir discuss their current education and career decisions with Meera जी.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- प्रिया ने प्रमाणपत्र कोर्स क्यों किया? (Why did Priya take the certificate course?)
- दोनों नौकरियों में क्या अंतर है? (What is the difference between the two jobs?)
- कबीर के परिवार को समझाना मुश्किल क्यों है? (Why is it difficult for Kabir to explain to his family?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| नेहा ने शाम की क्लासें क्यों लीं? (Why did Neha take evening classes?) | ______ |
| शुरुआत में यह मुश्किल क्यों था? (Why was it difficult at first?) | ______ |
| नया पद पुराने पद से कैसे अलग है? (How is the new position different from the old one?) | ______ |
| नेहा का अगले साल के लिए क्या इरादा है? (What is Neha's intention for next year?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short course notice and learner profile below, then answer the questions.
Comprehension questions:
- Who is the course notice aimed at, and what is required to complete it?
- Why did Amit decide to take the data-skills course?
- What is Amit's plan after finishing the course, and why?
- Identify one sentence in Amit's profile that uses ताकि and explain what purpose it expresses.
Writing Workshop
Write a short statement of goals, मेरा लक्ष्य ("My Goal"), describing your current or planned education/career path.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 180-250 word account in standard Devanagari, in complete multi-sentence paragraphs, that includes:
- Describe your current education or work situation, using relevant vocabulary from this chapter.
- State one goal and its purpose, using के लिए or ताकि.
- Explain a decision or intention, using का इरादा है, निर्णय लिया, or सोच रहा/रही हूँ.
- Compare at least two options or stages, using से बेहतर, से ज़्यादा, कम, or सबसे.
- Mention one obligation or requirement, using चाहिए, पड़ना, or ज़रूरी है.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- Purpose is expressed clearly, not just an action without a reason.
- Intention/decision language matches whether the decision is made, being made, or still being considered.
- Obligation frames (`चाहिए`/`पड़ना`/`ज़रूरी है`) are used with the correct distinction between personal, circumstantial, and general necessity.
- Comparison frames are accurate and support a clear conclusion.
- Gender, number, agreement, and oblique forms are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: लक्ष्य और कारण
With a partner, take turns stating one educational or career goal and its purpose, using के लिए or ताकि. Your partner should ask one follow-up question about your plan.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: साक्षात्कार अभ्यास
In pairs, role-play a short interview. One partner asks about education, skills, and goals; the other answers, comparing at least two options and explaining one decision or intention.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record a two- to three-minute spoken statement of goals, explaining your current situation, one goal and its purpose, and a decision you have made or are considering.
Culture and Communication
As the course notice and dialogue show, English-origin words such as कोर्स and प्रोजेक्ट are entirely normal in contemporary Hindi professional speech across many contexts. This is not a sign of incomplete Hindi; it reflects real, widespread usage. Core Hindi vocabulary remains equally important and should not be replaced wholesale by English terms.
As Kabir's example shows, career decisions are often discussed with family members, and explaining a change in direction may require patience and clear reasoning rather than a single announcement. This pattern varies widely by family, region, and individual circumstance, and should not be treated as a fixed rule for all Hindi-speaking families.
Common Mistakes
Error: Using चाहिए to describe an external requirement, such as saying इस पद के लिए अनुभव चाहिए when a neutral institutional requirement, not a personal obligation, is meant.
Correction: Use ज़रूरी है for a general or institutional requirement (इस पद के लिए अनुभव ज़रूरी है), and reserve चाहिए for what a specific person feels they personally should do.
Error: Writing मैं मेहनत कर रहा हूँ के लिए मुझे बेहतर पद मिल सके, mixing the two purpose patterns.
Correction: Use के लिए directly after an infinitive when the subject stays the same (बेहतर पद पाने के लिए), and use ताकि to introduce a full clause, especially when a different subject or a subjunctive-like verb form is involved (ताकि मुझे बेहतर पद मिल सके).
Error: Saying यह सबसे अच्छा है without having established what is being compared.
Correction: Establish the comparison set first (two or more named options), then use सबसे to single out the best among them, as Priya does when comparing her two job offers before concluding दूसरी नौकरी मेरे लिए सबसे उपयुक्त है.
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Model Dialogue, Listening passage, and Reading texts and answer in English:
- What purpose did Priya, Neha, and Amit each give for their educational or career choice?
- Which speakers were still deciding, and which had already made a decision? How can you tell from the language used?
भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Fill in the correct frame (चाहिए, पड़ना, or ज़रूरी है):
- इस कोर्स के लिए हफ़्ते में दो बार आना ______।
- मुझे और मेहनत करनी ______, क्योंकि यह मेरा सपना है।
- इस पद के लिए तीन साल का अनुभव ______।
2. Combine these two sentences using ताकि: मैंने यह कोर्स किया। मुझे नई नौकरी मिल सके।
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. Return to Amit's profile and identify the sentence where he compares his new path to his old field, and the sentence where he states his intention for after the course.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Write your complete statement of goals, मेरा लक्ष्य, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.
Cumulative Review
This chapter extends Chapter 2's connected, reference-aware discourse into education and career, reactivating ability, desire, and formal request language from Volume II, while introducing purpose expressions, intention/decision language, obligation contrasts, and expanded comparison as its main new development. It sets up Chapter 4's move toward describing places and communities.
Practical Performance Task
मेरा लक्ष्य — My Goal
Complete the following connected tasks in order.
- Listen to Neha's account above and complete the listening table.
- Read the course notice and Amit's profile and answer the comprehension questions.
- Speak in an interview-style role-play with a partner or instructor, comparing at least two options and explaining one decision.
- Write your complete 180-250 word statement of goals, मेरा लक्ष्य, following the Writing Workshop checklist.
- Edit your written text for purpose expressions, obligation frames, and comparison accuracy.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Task completion | All five required parts of the goal statement are present. |
| Purpose and intention | Purpose is expressed clearly with के लिए/ताकि, and intention/decision language matches the actual stage of the decision. |
| Obligation control | Correct distinction among चाहिए, पड़ना, and ज़रूरी है. |
| Comparison control | Accurate, clearly supported use of comparative and superlative frames. |
| Comprehensibility and pronunciation | Intelligible spoken delivery with natural phrase rhythm; accurate Devanagari spelling and punctuation in writing. |
This task evaluates emerging B2 independence in explaining purpose, intention, obligation, and comparison. Prioritize clarity of reasoning, task completion, and comprehensibility over exhaustive grammatical range.
