Volume III, Chapter 5: Unit I Assessment — Direction of Life · Speak and Write Hindi: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Objectives

This review chapter introduces no new grammar. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Narrate your Hindi-learning history and connect past, present, and future in one organized personal account.
  2. Describe a changing relationship with appropriate reference, address, and honorific choices.
  3. Explain education, career responsibilities, and goals using purpose, obligation, and comparison language.
  4. Explain change in a place or community, supporting the explanation with causes and results.
  5. Connect all four topics into one extended spoken and written performance.
  6. Respond to follow-up questions with clarification and examples.
  7. Edit connected Hindi writing for agreement, postpositions, cause-result accuracy, and cohesion.

Communication Scenario

The conversation group's fifth meeting is a "life update" session. Meera जी asks each member to prepare a short extended profile that connects who they are, how their relationships have changed, what they are working toward, and how their community has changed — the same four threads that Chapters 1 through 4 developed separately. Priya volunteers to go first, and her account becomes the model for this chapter's review.

  1. Notice that Priya does not treat her four topics as separate speeches. She moves between them using the same connectors and time markers practiced across Chapters 1-4.
  2. Notice that nothing in Priya's account is grammatically new. Every pattern — reflective stance markers, honorific reference, purpose and obligation, change-over-time, and cause-result — was introduced in an earlier chapter this unit.
  3. Notice how follow-up questions from the group require Priya to clarify and extend her account, not simply repeat it.
  4. This chapter's task is integration: combining familiar systems into one longer, coherent performance, and editing that performance for accuracy.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 5 closes Unit I, पहचान, अनुभव, और बदलता जीवन. It does not introduce new vocabulary domains or grammar systems. Instead, it asks learners to combine Chapters 1-4 into one extended, cohesive performance and to demonstrate the B1-to-B2 transition that the unit has been building toward.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners arrive with reflective self-narration and stance expressions (Chapter 1); reference tracking, honorific agreement, and को as recipient/experiencer (Chapter 2); purpose, intention, obligation, and comparison (Chapter 3); and change-over-time expressions with cause-result chains and receptive impersonal patterns (Chapter 4).

What This Chapter Does

No new grammar is introduced. This chapter consolidates the four threads above into a single extended spoken and written profile, with emphasis on cohesion, transitions between topics, and accurate editing across a longer text.

Looking Forward

Unit II, beginning in Chapter 6, shifts this personal and community-level discourse toward opinion, evidence, and argument — moving learners from describing their own lives to reasoning about ideas and information.

शब्दावली की समीक्षा — Cumulative Vocabulary Review

Cumulative Vocabulary Review

No new productive vocabulary is introduced in this chapter. The table below regroups Chapters 1-4's core vocabulary by the four topics this chapter's performance requires. Use it as a checklist while planning your extended profile, not as a new list to memorize.

Task: Before completing the Writing Workshop below, review each table and check that you can use at least three items from each section accurately in a full sentence.

Pronunciation and Orthography Review

Devanagari paragraph fluency

This chapter's performance task requires reading and writing a longer connected text than any single earlier chapter in this unit. Practice reading your notes aloud in full paragraphs rather than sentence by sentence, so that punctuation and phrase grouping support your meaning rather than interrupting it.

Schwa deletion in familiar abstract and formal words

Reactivate schwa-deletion patterns from words practiced across the unit, such as रिश्ता, ज़िम्मेदारी, विकास, and परिवहन. Read each aloud in isolation, then inside a full sentence from your own profile.

Phrase grouping across topic transitions

When moving from one topic to another — for example, from relationships to career goals — insert a brief pause and a slightly falling pitch, the same way Meera जी's transitions in the Model Dialogue below signal a topic shift to the listener.

Respectful and reflective intonation

Distinguish the steadier, more even intonation used for explaining community change (Chapter 4) from the softer, more reflective intonation used for personal narrative (Chapter 1). A single extended profile should move naturally between these registers as the topic shifts.

Grammar Review

No new grammar is introduced in this chapter. The systems below are reactivated from Chapters 1-4 and must appear, correctly and cumulatively, in this chapter's spoken and written performance.

Language Building Block — Integration, Not New Grammar
पहले मैं हिंदी बिल्कुल नहीं बोलती थी, लेकिन धीरे-धीरे मेरी हिंदी बेहतर हुई, और अब मैं अपने परिवार और दोस्तों से हिंदी में बात कर सकती हूँ, जिससे हमारा रिश्ता पहले से भी मज़बूत हो गया है।
Before, I didn't speak Hindi at all, but gradually my Hindi improved, and now I can talk with my family and friends in Hindi, as a result of which our relationship has become even stronger than before.

Form: This sentence combines Chapter 1's before/after self-narration, Chapter 3's comparative बेहतर, and Chapter 4's जिससे result-connector — three previously separate systems used together in one integrated sentence.

Meaning: The sentence connects personal language progress directly to a change in a relationship, showing how this chapter's topics reinforce one another rather than standing apart.

Use: When linking two of this chapter's four topics, look for a natural cause-result or comparison bridge like this one instead of simply listing the topics one after another.

Model Dialogue

Setting: At the conversation group's fifth meeting, Priya presents her extended "life update" profile, and the group asks follow-up questions.

मीरा जी प्रिया, आज हम चाहते हैं कि तुम अपनी भाषा, अपने रिश्तों, अपने काम, और अपने इलाक़े के बारे में एक साथ बताओ। शुरू करो। Priya, today we want you to talk about your language, your relationships, your work, and your area all together. Go ahead and start.
प्रिया ठीक है। पहले मैं हिंदी बहुत कम बोलती थी, लेकिन धीरे-धीरे मेरी हिंदी बेहतर हुई है। मुझे लगता है कि अब मैं ज़्यादा आत्मविश्वास से बोल पाती हूँ। Okay. Before, I spoke very little Hindi, but gradually my Hindi has gotten better. I feel that now I can speak with more confidence.
कबीर क्या इससे तुम्हारे रिश्तों पर भी असर पड़ा है? Has this also affected your relationships?
प्रिया बिल्कुल। पहले मैं अपनी दादी जी से सिर्फ़ अंग्रेज़ी में बात करती थी, लेकिन अब मैं उनसे हिंदी में बात करती हूँ, जिससे हमारा रिश्ता पहले से भी मज़बूत हो गया है। मैं उन्हें अपने काम के बारे में भी बता पाती हूँ। Absolutely. Before, I only spoke to my grandmother in English, but now I speak to her in Hindi, as a result of which our relationship has become even stronger than before. I'm also able to tell her about my work.
मीरा जी अपने काम के बारे में थोड़ा बताओ। तुम्हारा लक्ष्य क्या है? Tell us a bit about your work. What is your goal?
प्रिया मुझे लगता है कि मुझे अपने करियर में आगे बढ़ने के लिए हिंदी सीखना ज़रूरी है, क्योंकि मेरे नए ऑफ़िस में कई लोग हिंदी में बात करना पसंद करते हैं। इसलिए मैंने हिंदी सीखने का फ़ैसला किया, ताकि मैं सबसे बेहतर तरीक़े से काम कर सकूँ। I feel that learning Hindi is necessary for me to advance in my career, because many people at my new office prefer to speak in Hindi. So I decided to learn Hindi, so that I could work in the best possible way.
कबीर और तुम्हारा नया पड़ोस? क्या वहाँ भी कुछ बदल रहा है? And your new neighborhood? Is something changing there too?
प्रिया हाँ, यह पड़ोस भी धीरे-धीरे बदल रहा है। नए मेट्रो स्टेशन के कारण यहाँ यातायात बढ़ गया है, इसलिए सुबह घर से निकलना पहले से मुश्किल हो गया है। कहा जाता है कि नगर निगम जल्द ही एक नई सड़क बनाएगा। Yes, this neighborhood is also gradually changing. Because of the new metro station, traffic has increased here, so leaving home in the morning has become more difficult than before. It is said that the municipal corporation will soon build a new road.
मीरा जी तो, संक्षेप में, तुम्हारी भाषा, तुम्हारे रिश्ते, तुम्हारा काम, और तुम्हारा पड़ोस — सब कुछ धीरे-धीरे बदल रहा है, है ना? So, in summary, your language, your relationships, your work, and your neighborhood — everything is gradually changing, isn't it?
प्रिया जी हाँ, बिल्कुल सही कहा आपने। और मुझे लगता है कि यह बदलाव अच्छा है, क्योंकि इसने मुझे एक बेहतर इंसान बनाया है। Yes, exactly right. And I feel that this change is good, because it has made me a better person.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया की हिंदी में क्या बदलाव आया है, और इसका उसके रिश्तों पर क्या असर पड़ा है? (What change has occurred in Priya's Hindi, and what effect has this had on her relationships?)
  2. प्रिया ने हिंदी सीखने का फ़ैसला क्यों किया? (Why did Priya decide to learn Hindi?)
  3. प्रिया के नए पड़ोस में क्या बदल रहा है, और इसका क्या नतीजा हुआ है? (What is changing in Priya's new neighborhood, and what result has this had?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
कबीर ने पहले अपने रिश्तों पर ध्यान क्यों नहीं दिया? (Why did Kabir not pay attention to his relationships before?)______
कबीर के रिश्ते में क्या बदलाव आया है? (What change has occurred in Kabir's relationships?)______
कबीर का करियर लक्ष्य क्या है? (What is Kabir's career goal?)______
कबीर के गृहनगर में क्या बदल रहा है? (What is changing in Kabir's hometown?)______

Reading Practice

Read Sunita's extended profile below, which combines all four of this unit's topics, then answer the questions.

सुनीता की प्रोफ़ाइल — Sunita's Profile
My name is Sunita. I feel that my life has changed in many ways over the past few years. Before, I didn't know how to read and write Hindi properly, but gradually my Hindi got better, as a result of which I can now write long messages in Hindi too. This has also affected my relationships — now I speak regularly with my grandmother in Hindi, as a result of which we have become closer than before. Along with this, my career goal has also become clear: I feel I need a job in which I can use both Hindi and English, so I have started preparing for this. Finally, there has also been a lot of development in my area. Before, there were fewer amenities here, but these days new schools and hospitals have opened, although rent has also increased, as a result of which it has become difficult for some old families to live here. I feel that every change brings both benefits and drawbacks, so I try to look at these changes with a balanced perspective.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. Identify one sentence from each of Sunita's four topics (language, relationships, career, community) that uses a cause-result connector.
  2. How does Sunita connect her improved Hindi to her relationship with her grandmother?
  3. What is Sunita's career goal, and why has she started preparing for it?
  4. What benefit and what drawback does Sunita identify in her area's development?

Writing Workshop

Write your own extended "life update" profile, जीवन की दिशा ("Direction of Life"), connecting all four of this unit's topics into one cohesive text.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 250-350 word account in standard Devanagari, organized into clear paragraphs, that includes:

  1. A short reflective section on your Hindi (or another language-learning) progress, using past, present, and future reference and at least one stance expression such as मुझे लगता है.
  2. A description of one relationship that has changed, using appropriate reference and honorific choices.
  3. An explanation of an education or career goal, using at least one purpose or obligation expression.
  4. An explanation of how a place or community has changed, including at least one complete cause-result chain.
  5. At least one sentence that connects two of these four topics (for example, language ability affecting a relationship, or a career goal connected to a community change).
  6. A correct choice between an impersonal expression (कहा जाता है/माना जाता है) and a personal opinion (मुझे लगता है) somewhere in the text.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • All four topics from Chapters 1-4 appear and are clearly connected, not simply listed one after another.
  • Aspect choices (habitual, progressive, perfective, future) are accurate throughout the narrative.
  • ने and को are used correctly wherever a transitive perfective clause or a recipient/experiencer occurs.
  • Honorific agreement and address choices are consistent with the people described.
  • At least one complete cause-result chain and one change-over-time sequence appear in the community section.
  • Impersonal and personal opinion frames are used correctly and not confused with each other.
  • Gender, number, agreement, and oblique forms are applied correctly throughout.
  • Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: चार विषय, एक कहानी

With a partner, take turns speaking for about ninety seconds, moving through all four topics (language, relationships, career, community) in order, using at least one time marker and one cause-result connector.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: प्रश्न और स्पष्टीकरण

After your partner's extended profile, ask at least two follow-up questions that require clarification or an example, similar to the questions Kabir and Meera जी ask Priya in the Model Dialogue above.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record a three- to four-minute spoken version of your extended profile, connecting all four topics, and then listen back to check for clear topic transitions and accurate aspect and honorific choices.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Life as connected, not compartmentalized

As Priya's, Kabir's, and Sunita's profiles show, language ability, relationships, career goals, and community change are rarely separate stories in real life — they influence one another. Presenting them as connected, as this chapter asks you to do, reflects how people across Hindi-speaking communities actually talk about their lives, rather than treating each topic as an isolated interview answer.

Culture in Context — Balanced perspective on change

Sunita's closing reflection — that every change brings both benefits and drawbacks — models a balanced, non-judgmental way of discussing personal and community change. This tone remains useful throughout Volume III, especially in Unit II, where learners begin evaluating evidence and making recommendations.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Listing topics instead of connecting them

Error: Writing four disconnected paragraphs that never reference one another, such as ending the language section and beginning the relationship section with no transition or link between them.

Correction: Use at least one sentence that explicitly connects two topics, such as मेरी हिंदी बेहतर हुई, जिससे मेरा अपनी दादी जी से रिश्ता भी मज़बूत हुआ, so the profile reads as one coherent account of a life rather than four separate answers.

Common Mistake — Losing honorific consistency across a longer text

Error: Referring to a respected family member with honorific agreement in one sentence (मेरी नानी जी बहुत खुश हुईं) and then switching to non-honorific agreement later in the same profile (वह बहुत खुश हुई without जी or plural verb agreement).

Correction: Decide on the appropriate address and agreement level for each person early in your writing, and check every later reference to that person against your first choice, as in मेरी नानी जी बहुत खुश हुईं, और वे अब मुझसे हिंदी में बात करती हैं.

Common Mistake — Overusing impersonal frames in a personal profile

Error: Writing माना जाता है कि मेरा करियर लक्ष्य अच्छा है, applying an impersonal frame reserved for general belief to a clearly personal statement about one's own goal.

Correction: Reserve कहा जाता है/माना जाता है for genuinely general or widely held views (as in the community section), and use मुझे लगता है or मेरा लक्ष्य है for personal reflections and goals, as in मुझे लगता है कि यह लक्ष्य मेरे लिए सही है.

Chapter Review

भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)

1. Return to the Model Dialogue, Listening passage, and Reading text and answer in English:

  1. List one change mentioned by Priya, Kabir, and Sunita in each of the four topic areas (language, relationships, career, community).
  2. Identify one sentence in each source that explicitly connects two of the four topics.

भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)

1. Fill in the correct connector or expression (जिससे, इसलिए, के कारण, मुझे लगता है, or माना जाता है):

  1. मेरी हिंदी बेहतर हुई है, ______ मैं अब अपनी दादी जी से हिंदी में बात करती हूँ।
  2. नए मेट्रो स्टेशन ______ इस इलाक़े में यातायात बढ़ गया है।
  3. ______ कि यह बदलाव लंबे समय में अच्छा होगा। (general/widely held belief)
  4. ______ कि मुझे यह लक्ष्य पसंद है। (personal opinion)

2. Combine these two sentences using an appropriate honorific verb form: मेरी नानी जी को यह पसंद आया। वे बहुत खुश हुई।

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. Return to Sunita's profile and identify the sentence in which she connects her improved Hindi ability to a relationship, and the sentence in which she states her career goal.

भाग D — लेखन (Writing)

1. Write your complete extended profile, जीवन की दिशा, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.

Cumulative Review

This chapter introduces no new grammar. It consolidates Chapter 1's reflective self-narration, Chapter 2's reference tracking and honorific agreement, Chapter 3's purpose/obligation/comparison language, and Chapter 4's change-over-time and cause-result systems into one extended, connected performance. It closes Unit I and prepares learners for Unit II's shift toward opinion, evidence, and argument, beginning in Chapter 6.

Unit I Performance Assessment

जीवन की दिशा — Direction of Life

Complete the following connected tasks in order. This is the Unit I assessment; it evaluates integrated performance across Chapters 1-4 rather than any single chapter in isolation.

  1. Listen to Kabir's account above and complete the listening table.
  2. Read Sunita's profile and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Speak an extended three- to four-minute profile connecting all four unit topics, with a partner or instructor asking at least two follow-up questions.
  4. Write your complete 250-350 word extended profile, जीवन की दिशा, following the Writing Workshop checklist.
  5. Edit your written text for aspect accuracy, honorific consistency, cause-result chains, and impersonal-versus-personal opinion language.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Task completionAll four Unit I topics are present and connected, not merely listed.
Aspect and agreement controlAccurate habitual, progressive, perfective, and future forms; correct ने and को use.
Honorific and reference consistencyConsistent address and honorific agreement for each person referenced across the whole text.
Cause-result and change-over-time controlAt least one accurate, complete cause-result chain and one clear before/after sequence.
Impersonal vs. personal opinionCorrect choice between कहा जाता है/माना जाता है and मुझे लगता है.
Cohesion and follow-upClear transitions between topics; ability to clarify and extend the account when asked follow-up questions.
Comprehensibility and pronunciationIntelligible spoken delivery with natural phrase rhythm across topic transitions; accurate Devanagari spelling and punctuation in writing.

This assessment evaluates the B1-to-B2 transition: sustained discourse, connected explanation, accurate core grammar, and developing register control across four integrated topics. Prioritize cohesion, task completion, and comprehensibility over exhaustive grammatical range.

Looking Ahead

अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now

You can connect your language-learning history, a changing relationship, an education or career goal, and a community change into one extended, cohesive spoken and written profile; use aspect, honorific agreement, cause-result chains, and impersonal-versus-personal opinion frames accurately across a longer text; and respond to follow-up questions with clarification and examples.

आगे बढ़ते हुए: अध्याय 6 — Continuing on: Chapter 6

Chapter 6, राय से तर्क तक ("From Opinion to Argument"), opens Unit II by shifting from personal and community narrative toward stating and supporting opinions with reasons and examples, introducing hedging, stance, and polite disagreement as the unit's first new grammar systems.
