कारण, परिणाम, और समाधान
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Explain a practical problem in organized detail.
- Identify one or more causes and one or more results of a problem.
- Weigh advantages and disadvantages of a proposed course of action.
- Propose a realistic solution using appropriate recommendation language.
- Discuss what should be done and why, with audience-appropriate softening.
- Write a connected problem-solution paragraph or short report.
Communication Scenario
At the group's seventh meeting, Meera जी shifts the discussion from opinions in general to a specific practical problem: increasing traffic and parking difficulty near Priya's and Kabir's neighborhood school. The group moves beyond stating an opinion, as they did in Chapter 6, to explaining the problem's causes, its effects on the community, and possible solutions.
- Notice how each speaker names a specific cause before jumping to a solution.
- Notice how इसलिए, के कारण, and की वजह से connect a cause to its result across two or more sentences.
- Notice how recommendations use softened forms such as बेहतर होगा कि rather than blunt commands.
- This chapter's task is to move from a single supported opinion (Chapter 6) to a fuller problem-solution explanation: problem, cause, result, and realistic next step.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 7 continues Unit II, विचार, प्रमाण, और सार्वजनिक संवाद. It builds directly on Chapter 6's opinion and evidence language by adding cause-result connectors, modal recommendation frames, and problem-solution paragraph organization.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners arrive from Chapter 6 with stance expressions (मेरे विचार में, मुझे लगता है कि), hedging (शायद, संभव है कि), concession (हालाँकि...फिर भी), and evidence markers (उदाहरण के लिए). They also bring Chapter 4's cause-result vocabulary (के कारण, की वजह से) from community-change description.
What This Chapter Does
This chapter expands cause-result connectors into multi-sentence chains, introduces modal recommendation with चाहिए, ज़रूरी है, and बेहतर होगा कि, and adds controlled पड़ना for necessity and consequence. It also teaches the problem-solution paragraph structure used across the rest of Unit II.
Looking Forward
Chapter 8 builds on this chapter's cause-result and recommendation language to interpret news and public-information texts, including source attribution and reported claims.
Core Vocabulary
The following vocabulary supports explaining a problem, tracing its causes and results, and proposing a solution. Learn each item in a full sentence, not as an isolated word.
7.1 Problem, Cause, and Result
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| समस्या | problem | feminine noun; recycled from Chapter 4 |
| कारण | cause, reason | recycled; masculine noun |
| परिणाम | result, consequence | more formal than नतीजा |
| नतीजा | result, outcome | everyday alternative to परिणाम |
| असर | effect, impact | इसका असर...पर पड़ता है = this affects... |
| समाधान | solution | masculine noun; central to this chapter |
| सुधार | improvement | related verb: सुधरना (to improve, intransitive) |
| ज़िम्मेदारी | responsibility | feminine noun |
| जोखिम | risk | masculine noun |
| फ़ायदा | advantage, benefit | everyday; contrast with नुकसान |
| नुकसान | disadvantage, harm | masculine noun |
| ख़र्च, लागत | cost | ख़र्च is more everyday; लागत more formal |
| योजना | plan | feminine noun; recycled from Chapter 3 |
| प्राथमिकता | priority | formal noun; receptive-leaning at this stage |
7.2 Cause-Result Connectors
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| क्योंकि | because | recycled; introduces a reason within one sentence |
| इसलिए | therefore, so | opens the result in a following sentence |
| इस वजह से | for this reason | slightly more explicit than इसलिए alone |
| के कारण | because of, due to | postpositional phrase; recycled from Chapter 4 |
| की वजह से | because of, due to | everyday alternative to के कारण |
| जिससे | because of which, so that | links a clause to its consequence; introduced this chapter |
| नतीजा यह हुआ कि... | the result was that... | opens a result clause; formal-adjacent |
| अगर...तो | if...then | recycled controlled conditional |
| हालाँकि | although | recycled from Chapter 6 |
| फिर भी | even so, still | recycled; concessive |
7.3 Recommendation and Necessity
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| चाहिए | should | recycled modal; करना चाहिए = should do |
| ज़रूरी है | it is necessary | often followed by कि + clause |
| बेहतर होगा कि | it would be better if | softer than चाहिए; introduced this chapter |
| पड़ना | to have to (necessity/consequence) | मुझे जाना पड़ा = I had to go; controlled use only |
| सुझाव देना | to give a suggestion | मेरा सुझाव है कि... = my suggestion is that... |
| कदम उठाना | to take a step (action) | common collocation for solutions |
| समझौता करना | to compromise | useful when weighing advantages/disadvantages |
Receptive vocabulary: नीति (policy), सामाजिक समस्या (social problem), जटिलता (complexity), and formal nouns ending in -ता such as जटिलता or सुविधा may appear in adapted advice columns but are not required for productive use in this chapter.
Pronunciation and Listening Focus
Longer cause-result sentences are easier to follow when the cause and result form two distinct phrase groups, with a brief pause at the connector. Practice reading सड़क पर गाड़ियों की संख्या बढ़ गई है, इसलिए स्कूल के पास पार्किंग की समस्या और गंभीर हो गई है aloud, pausing briefly after बढ़ गई है and before इसलिए.
बेहतर होगा कि and ज़रूरी है कि are usually spoken with a level, measured pitch rather than a sharp or commanding tone. Contrast the flatter, more assertive यह करो (a direct command) with the softer, more deliberative बेहतर होगा कि हम यह करें.
Practice schwa deletion in this chapter's longer vocabulary: ज़िम्मेदारी (zim-me-DAA-ree, not zim-me-daa-REE-a), समाधान (sa-maa-DHAAN), and प्राथमिकता (praath-mik-TAA). Read each aloud in isolation, then inside a full sentence from the Model Dialogue below.
While listening to the Model Dialogue and Listening Practice passage, listen specifically for (1) what the problem is, (2) what caused it, (3) what result or effect it has had, and (4) what the speaker proposes to do about it.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
This chapter introduces two closely related systems: cause-result chains that connect a cause to its result across one or more sentences, and modal recommendation language used to propose a realistic solution. Both systems support the problem-solution paragraph structure introduced at the end of this section.
7.4 Cause-Result Chains
Form: A cause-result chain names a cause, then explicitly connects it to a result using इसलिए, इस वजह से, के कारण, की वजह से, or जिससे.
Meaning: इसलिए and इस वजह से open a new sentence that presents the result of the previously stated cause. के कारण and की वजह से instead attach the cause directly to the result within one sentence, functioning like a postpositional phrase: गाड़ियों की बढ़ती संख्या के कारण, सड़क पर भीड़ हो जाती है।
Use: जिससे links a clause to its consequence more tightly than इसलिए: पार्किंग की जगह कम है, जिससे अभिभावकों को गाड़ी दूर खड़ी करनी पड़ती है। ("Parking space is limited, because of which parents have to park the car far away.") Do not stack more than two cause-result links in a single sentence; split longer explanations into separate sentences for clarity.
7.5 नतीजा यह हुआ कि...
Form: नतीजा यह हुआ कि opens a full clause describing a consequence, and is slightly more formal than इसलिए.
Use: Reserve नतीजा यह हुआ कि for a clear, notable consequence, especially in writing; इसलिए remains the more common everyday connector in speech.
7.6 Modal Recommendation
Form: चाहिए attaches directly to the infinitive stem (बनाना चाहिए); ज़रूरी है and बेहतर होगा are typically followed by कि + a full clause.
Meaning: चाहिए expresses a general obligation or advisability; ज़रूरी है कि expresses stronger necessity; बेहतर होगा कि is the softest of the three, framing the recommendation as one reasonable option rather than an obligation.
Use: Choose among the three based on how strongly the speaker wants to insist on the recommendation and how the audience might receive directness. बेहतर होगा कि is often the safest default in a mixed group discussing a shared problem.
7.7 Controlled पड़ना for Necessity and Consequence
Form: The light verb पड़ना follows an infinitive agreeing with its object, as in करनी पड़ती है or जाना पड़ा.
Meaning: पड़ना expresses that an action becomes necessary because of circumstances beyond the subject's control, distinct from चाहिए, which expresses advice or general obligation rather than forced necessity.
Use: This chapter introduces पड़ना only in familiar, controlled patterns describing consequence (...पड़ती है, ...पड़ा). Full productive control of the compound-verb system continues to develop across later chapters.
7.8 Paragraph Organization: Problem, Cause, Result, Solution
Organize a short spoken or written problem-solution explanation using four parts:
- Problem — name the problem clearly: स्कूल के पास पार्किंग एक बड़ी समस्या बन गई है।
- Cause — explain why, using क्योंकि or के कारण: ...क्योंकि गाड़ियों की संख्या बढ़ गई है।
- Result — connect the cause to its effect, using इसलिए or नतीजा यह हुआ कि: इसलिए, बच्चों के लिए पैदल चलना मुश्किल हो गया है।
- Solution — propose a realistic next step: मेरा सुझाव है कि स्कूल एक अलग पार्किंग क्षेत्र बनाए।
Do not introduce policy analysis, legal argument, or specialized economic vocabulary in this chapter; the four-part structure above is the complete Chapter 7 target.
Model Dialogue
Setting: At the conversation group's seventh meeting, Meera जी introduces a specific community problem — traffic and parking near Priya's and Kabir's neighborhood school — and the group works through its causes, results, and possible solutions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- प्रिया के स्कूल के पास पार्किंग की समस्या का क्या कारण है? (What is the cause of the parking problem near Priya's school?)
- इस समस्या का क्या नतीजा हुआ? (What was the result of this problem?)
- कबीर और प्रिया कौन-से दो समाधान सुझाते हैं? (What two solutions do Kabir and Priya suggest?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| राजेश के मोहल्ले की समस्या क्या है? (What is the problem in Rajesh's neighborhood?) | ______ |
| राजेश के अनुसार इस समस्या का कारण क्या है? (According to Rajesh, what is the cause of this problem?) | ______ |
| इसका नतीजा क्या हुआ है? (What has been the result of this?) | ______ |
| राजेश क्या समाधान सुझाता है? (What solution does Rajesh suggest?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short advice-column response below, in which a community-forum writer replies to a resident's question about a shared problem, and then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Identify the main cause of the garbage problem, and the result described in the second sentence.
- Where does the writer mention a disadvantage, and what is it?
- What solution does the writer propose, and what hedge or concession accompanies it?
- How does the writer's conclusion frame the timeline for solving the problem?
Writing Workshop
Write a short problem-solution paragraph, एक समस्या और उसका समाधान ("A Problem and Its Solution"), about a practical problem in your community, school, or workplace (for example, traffic, water supply, waste collection, noise, or another topic your instructor approves).
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 130-190 word paragraph in standard Devanagari that includes:
- A clearly named problem, stated in the first sentence.
- At least one cause, introduced with क्योंकि or के कारण.
- At least one result, introduced with इसलिए, जिससे, or नतीजा यह हुआ कि.
- At least one advantage or disadvantage of your proposed solution.
- A realistic recommendation, using चाहिए, ज़रूरी है कि, or बेहतर होगा कि.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- The problem, cause, result, and solution are all present and appear in a logical order.
- Cause-result connectors are used correctly and are not overused in a single sentence.
- The recommendation uses an appropriately softened register for the audience.
- If पड़ना is used, the infinitive agrees correctly with its object.
- Gender, number, agreement, and oblique forms are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: समस्या और कारण
With a partner, take turns naming a practical problem (traffic, water, waste, noise) and explaining its cause using क्योंकि or के कारण.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: समाधान सुझाना
After your partner explains a problem and its result, propose a realistic solution using बेहतर होगा कि or ज़रूरी है कि, and mention one advantage and one disadvantage of your proposal.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record a one- to two-minute spoken explanation of a practical problem, following the problem-cause-result-solution structure, and then listen back to check that each part is clearly present.
Culture and Communication
As the Model Dialogue and Reading passage show, recommendations about shared problems are often softened through forms like बेहतर होगा कि or by acknowledging cost and difficulty (इसमें ख़र्च भी होगा) before proposing a next step. A direct, unhedged command can sound blunt in many settings, especially when the problem affects a whole community rather than one individual. Directness is valued differently across relationships, institutions, and individual speakers, so learners should adjust based on context.
Both the Model Dialogue and the Reading passage frame community problems as issues to be solved collectively (पूरे मोहल्ले को मिलकर काम करना होगा), rather than assigning blame to one person or group. This reflects a common pattern in everyday problem-solving conversation, though it is not the only possible approach, and learners should avoid assuming this reflects one fixed cultural rule for every context or region.
Common Mistakes
Error: Combining क्योंकि, इसलिए, and जिससे in a single overloaded sentence, such as क्योंकि गाड़ियाँ बढ़ गईं, इसलिए भीड़ हो गई, जिससे दुर्घटना हुई, इसलिए...
Correction: Split the explanation into two or three shorter sentences: गाड़ियों की संख्या बढ़ गई है। इसलिए, सड़क पर भीड़ हो जाती है। इस वजह से, एक छोटी दुर्घटना भी हुई।
Error: Using पड़ना to give general advice, as in स्कूल को पार्किंग बनानी पड़ती है when the intended meaning is a recommendation, not a forced necessity.
Correction: Use चाहिए or बेहतर होगा कि for advice and recommendation: स्कूल को पार्किंग बनानी चाहिए। Reserve पड़ना for situations forced by circumstance: पार्किंग की जगह न होने के कारण, अभिभावकों को गाड़ी दूर खड़ी करनी पड़ती है।
Error: Presenting a solution as if it has no disadvantages at all, such as stating only स्कूल को पार्किंग क्षेत्र बनाना चाहिए without any mention of cost, difficulty, or trade-off.
Correction: Acknowledge at least one advantage and one disadvantage before or after the recommendation: मेरा सुझाव है कि स्कूल पार्किंग क्षेत्र बनाए, हालाँकि इसमें ख़र्च भी लगेगा।
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Model Dialogue, Listening passage, and Reading text and answer in English:
- Identify one problem, one cause, one result, and one proposed solution from each of the three sources.
- Explain how the advice-column writer balances a recommendation with an acknowledged cost.
भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Fill in the correct connector or expression (इसलिए, के कारण, जिससे, बेहतर होगा कि, or पड़ती है):
- पार्किंग की जगह न होने ______ , अभिभावकों को गाड़ी दूर खड़ी करनी पड़ती है।
- गाड़ियों की संख्या बढ़ गई है। ______ , सड़क पर भीड़ हो जाती है।
- कूड़ा हर दिन निकलता है, ______ लोग उसे सड़क पर रख देते हैं।
- ______ नगर निगम इस समस्या को जल्दी देखे।
2. Rewrite the following overloaded sentence as two shorter, clearer sentences: क्योंकि पानी की माँग बढ़ गई है, इसलिए सप्लाई अनियमित हो गई है, जिससे लोगों को पानी जमा करना पड़ता है।
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. Return to the advice-column text and identify the sentence where the writer names the main cause of the garbage problem, and the sentence where the writer proposes testing the solution in a small area first.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Write your complete problem-solution paragraph, एक समस्या और उसका समाधान, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles Chapter 6's stance and hedging expressions, Chapter 4's cause-result vocabulary and community description, and earlier obligation language with चाहिए, while introducing multi-sentence cause-result chains, नतीजा यह हुआ कि, softened recommendation with बेहतर होगा कि, and controlled पड़ना. It prepares learners for Chapter 8's shift toward interpreting news and public-information texts.
Practical Performance Task

This task evaluates emerging B2 control of problem-solution explanation and audience-sensitive recommendation. Prioritize a clear, logically connected explanation over exhaustive grammatical range.
Answer Key
Model Dialogue — Comprehension
- The cause is the sharp increase in the number of vehicles in the area over the past few years, leading to crowding near the school in the morning.
- The result was that parents began parking directly in front of the school gate, making it difficult for children to walk, and a small accident occurred a few weeks ago.
- Priya suggests building a separate parking area away from the gate; Kabir suggests slightly changing the school's start and dismissal times so cars don't all arrive at once.
Listening
- The problem is that the water supply in Rajesh's neighborhood has become very irregular over the past few months.
- The cause, according to Rajesh, is that new buildings are being constructed very quickly, increasing the demand for water.
- The result is that many homes get water only two or three days a week, so people have to store water.
- Rajesh suggests first checking the old pipes, since the real problem may be old, damaged pipelines rather than a genuine water shortage, and that neighbors should send a written complaint to the municipal corporation together.
Reading — Comprehension
- The main cause is that the garbage truck comes only once a week while garbage is produced daily; the result is that people leave garbage on the roadside, spreading dirt and smell.
- The disadvantage appears in: इसका एक नुकसान यह भी है कि बरसात के मौसम में यह समस्या और गंभीर हो जाती है।
- The writer proposes increasing garbage collection to at least three days a week, hedged with हालाँकि इसमें नगर निगम को अतिरिक्त ख़र्च भी उठाना पड़ेगा, acknowledging the added cost.
- The conclusion frames the problem as one that will be solved gradually, not immediately, tempering expectations rather than promising a quick fix.
Chapter Review — भाग B
- (a) के कारण; (b) इसलिए; (c) जिससे; (d) बेहतर होगा कि.
- Sample answer: पानी की माँग बढ़ गई है। इसलिए, सप्लाई अनियमित हो गई है, और लोगों को पानी जमा करना पड़ता है।
Looking Ahead
अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now
You can explain a practical problem, connect it to its causes and results using a range of connectors, weigh an advantage and disadvantage, and propose a realistic solution with audience-appropriate recommendation language, following the problem-cause-result-solution structure in speech and writing.
