समाचार और स्रोत
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Understand the main idea of an adapted Hindi news item or public-information text.
- Identify the source, speaker, event, time, place, and reported claim in a news text.
- Distinguish fact, report, quote, opinion, and uncertainty in a news or public text.
- Summarize a short news item or interview orally and in writing.
- Ask about where a piece of information came from.
- Write a short, neutral summary with clear source attribution.
Communication Scenario
At the group's eighth meeting, Meera जी brings a short local news item to class: a community news website has published a short report about the school parking problem the group discussed in Chapter 7. The group reads and listens to the report together, then practices separating what the report actually says from what they personally think about it.
- Notice how the report opens by naming a source before giving any claim: रिपोर्ट के अनुसार.
- Notice how quoted words are introduced with कहा कि, बताया कि, or a directly quoted sentence.
- Notice how the report marks uncertainty with phrases like यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि rather than stating an unconfirmed claim as fact.
- This chapter's task is to move from explaining a problem in your own words (Chapter 7) to reporting what a source says about a problem, while keeping your own opinion clearly separate.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 8 continues Unit II, विचार, प्रमाण, और सार्वजनिक संवाद. It builds directly on Chapter 7's cause-result and recommendation language by adding reported speech, source attribution, and neutral summary organization drawn from adapted news and public-information texts.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners arrive from Chapter 7 with cause-result connectors (इसलिए, के कारण, जिससे), a formal result clause (नतीजा यह हुआ कि), and modal recommendation language (चाहिए, ज़रूरी है कि, बेहतर होगा कि). They also bring Volume II's controlled use of कि to report simple information.
What This Chapter Does
This chapter introduces reported speech with कहा कि, बताया कि, पूछा कि, and लिखा कि; source attribution with के अनुसार and के मुताबिक़; and receptive-to-controlled passive-like public-information patterns such as कहा गया and माना जा रहा है. It also teaches the problem of keeping a neutral summary separate from personal opinion.
Looking Forward
Chapter 9 builds on this chapter's source-based reading and reporting skills to compare options, weigh advantages and disadvantages, and write a structured recommendation.
Core Vocabulary
The following vocabulary supports understanding a news item, identifying its source, and reporting its content neutrally. Learn each item in a full sentence, not as an isolated word.
8.1 News, Reports, and Sources
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| समाचार, ख़बर | news | समाचार is more formal; ख़बर is everyday |
| रिपोर्ट | report | feminine noun; widely used in Hindi media |
| स्रोत | source | masculine noun; central to this chapter |
| साक्षात्कार, इंटरव्यू | interview | साक्षात्कार is more formal; इंटरव्यू is common in speech |
| बयान | statement | masculine noun; often used with दिया (gave a statement) |
| दावा | claim | दावा करना = to claim |
| घटना | event | feminine noun; recycled awareness from earlier narration |
| अपडेट, ताज़ा जानकारी | update | ताज़ा जानकारी is the more everyday Hindi phrase |
| घोषणा | announcement | घोषणा करना = to announce |
| जानकारी, सूचना | information | both common; सूचना slightly more official |
| सार्वजनिक | public | adjective; recycled from Chapter 4 |
| स्थानीय | local | adjective |
| राष्ट्रीय | national | adjective |
| अंतरराष्ट्रीय | international | adjective; longer word for schwa-deletion practice |
8.2 Reporting Frames
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| रिपोर्ट के अनुसार | according to the report | opens a sentence with source attribution |
| के मुताबिक़ | according to | everyday alternative to के अनुसार |
| उन्होंने कहा कि | they/he/she said that | respectful pronoun; recycled honorific agreement |
| खबर में बताया गया कि | the news reported that | passive-like frame; receptive-to-controlled this chapter |
| एक व्यक्ति ने कहा | a person said | useful when the speaker is unnamed |
| यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि | it is not clear whether | marks uncertainty rather than stating a claim as fact |
| माना जा रहा है कि | it is believed that | passive-like; receptive this chapter |
| पुष्टि नहीं हुई है | has not been confirmed | useful for unverified claims |
8.3 Distinguishing Fact, Quote, Opinion, and Uncertainty
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| तथ्य | fact | masculine noun; formal register |
| उद्धरण, कोट | quotation, quote | उद्धरण is more formal; receptive-leaning |
| राय | opinion | recycled from Chapter 6 |
| अनिश्चितता | uncertainty | formal noun; mostly receptive at this stage |
| पुष्टि करना | to confirm | अधिकारियों ने पुष्टि की = officials confirmed |
| इनकार करना | to deny | useful contrast to पुष्टि करना |
Receptive vocabulary: headline-style compressed phrases such as पार्किंग समस्या पर नगर निगम सक्रिय; formal news nouns such as प्रशासन (administration) and अधिकारी (official); and Urdu/Perso-Arabic-associated media terms such as ख़बर, बयान, and रिपोर्टर, which are ordinary in contemporary Hindi news usage rather than foreign intrusions.
Pronunciation and Listening Focus
News passages pack a lot of specific information — names, places, numbers, and dates — into a small space. Before listening, scan the Listening Practice questions below so you know which details to listen for, then let the surrounding sentence carry the meaning rather than trying to catch every word.
Read-aloud news style tends to be more measured and evenly paced than casual conversation, with a slight pause after a source attribution phrase. Practice reading रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, ‑‑ स्कूल के पास पार्किंग की समस्या पर नगर निगम ने ध्यान देना शुरू कर दिया है aloud, pausing briefly after के अनुसार.
Practice schwa deletion in this chapter's longer vocabulary: अंतरराष्ट्रीय (an-tar-raash-TREE-ya), प्रशासन (pra-SHAA-san), and अधिकारी (a-dhi-KAA-ree). Read each aloud in isolation, then inside a full sentence from the Model Dialogue below.
While listening to the Model Dialogue and Listening Practice passage, listen specifically for (1) what the source is, (2) what claim or information is reported, (3) who is quoted directly, and (4) whether anything is marked as unconfirmed or unclear.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
This chapter introduces two closely related systems: reported speech with reporting verbs such as कहा कि, बताया कि, पूछा कि, and लिखा कि, and source attribution with के अनुसार and के मुताबिक़. Both systems support the neutral-summary organization introduced at the end of this section.
8.4 Reported Statements with कहा कि, बताया कि, पूछा कि, and लिखा कि
Form: A reporting verb is followed by कि and a full clause containing the reported content.
Meaning: कहा कि reports a general statement; बताया कि reports information given to someone; पूछा कि reports a question, often combined with an indirect question word (see 8.5); लिखा कि reports written content.
Use: Keep the reported clause close to the source's actual meaning. Do not silently add your own opinion inside a reported clause; if you want to add your own view, mark it clearly as separate, as in रिपोर्ट में कहा गया कि..., लेकिन मेरे हिसाब से...
8.5 Indirect Questions Inside Reporting Frames
Form: पूछा कि is followed by a question word (क्या, कब, कहाँ, क्यों) inside a statement-order clause rather than a direct question.
Use: When the original question was a yes-no question, keep क्या as the reporting question word: उसने पूछा कि क्या पार्किंग जगह मुफ़्त होगी। ("They asked whether the parking space would be free.")
8.6 Source Attribution with के अनुसार and के मुताबिक़
Form: के अनुसार and के मुताबिक़ attach to a named source (a person, report, or organization) and typically open the sentence, often followed by a comma.
Meaning: Both mean "according to"; के मुताबिक़ is the more everyday alternative and is common in spoken and less formal written Hindi, while के अनुसार is common in both formal and everyday writing.
Use: Always name the source explicitly the first time a claim is introduced. Do not present a source's claim as your own established fact; keep the attribution visible, especially for claims that have not been confirmed.
8.7 Passive-Like Public-Information Patterns (Receptive-to-Controlled)
Form: Forms such as कहा गया, बताया गया, and माना जा रहा है present information without naming who is speaking, which is common in news and public texts.
Meaning: कहा गया है कि... ("it has been said that...") and माना जा रहा है कि... ("it is believed that...") let a writer report information whose speaker is unnamed or generalized.
Use: Recognize these forms in reading and listening, and you may reproduce short, familiar instances such as माना जा रहा है कि... in your own writing. Full productive control of the passive system is not a Chapter 8 requirement; do not attempt to generate unfamiliar passive forms freely.
8.8 Marking Uncertainty: यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि
Use: When a report does not confirm a detail, mark it with यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि or इसकी पुष्टि नहीं हुई है कि rather than presenting the detail as settled fact.
8.9 Paragraph Organization: Neutral Summary with Source Attribution
Organize a short neutral summary using four parts:
- Source — name the source first: एक स्थानीय समाचार वेबसाइट की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार...
- Main claim — report the central piece of information: ...नगर निगम स्कूल के पास एक नई पार्किंग जगह पर विचार कर रहा है।
- Quoted or reported statement — include at least one attributed statement: एक अधिकारी ने बताया कि यह काम अगले कुछ महीनों में शुरू हो सकता है।
- Uncertainty, if present — mark any unconfirmed detail clearly: यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि काम कब पूरा होगा।
Do not insert personal opinion into a neutral summary; the four-part structure above is the complete Chapter 8 target.
Model Dialogue
Setting: At the conversation group's eighth meeting, Meera जी brings a short local news report about the school parking problem from Chapter 7, and the group practices separating the report's content from their own opinions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- रिपोर्ट का स्रोत क्या है? (What is the source of the report?)
- रिपोर्ट में नगर निगम के अधिकारी ने क्या बताया? (What did the municipal-corporation official say, according to the report?)
- रिपोर्ट में कौन-सी बात स्पष्ट नहीं है? (What is not clear according to the report?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural, news-reading pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| रिपोर्ट का स्रोत क्या है? (What is the source of the report?) | ______ |
| पुस्तकालय पिछले साल क्यों बंद हुआ था? (Why was the library closed last year?) | ______ |
| कर्मचारी के अनुसार पुस्तकालय कब खुल सकता है? (According to the employee, when might the library open?) | ______ |
| रिपोर्ट में कौन-सी दो बातें स्पष्ट नहीं हैं? (What two things are not clear according to the report?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short adapted news notice below, published on a community website, and then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Identify the source of this report and the main claim it reports.
- What did the municipal-corporation spokesperson say caused this work to begin?
- What question did the local shopkeeper ask, and how did the spokesperson respond?
- Identify the sentence that marks something as unconfirmed, and explain what remains unclear.
Writing Workshop
Write a short neutral summary, एक छोटी ख़बर का सारांश ("A Short News Summary"), of a real or invented local news item (for example, a school, library, park, road, or public-service update your instructor approves).
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 130-190 word paragraph in standard Devanagari that includes:
- A named source, introduced with के अनुसार or के मुताबिक़ in the first sentence.
- At least one reported statement, introduced with कहा कि, बताया कि, or पूछा कि.
- At least one specific detail such as a name, place, number, or date.
- At least one marked uncertainty, using यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि or इसकी पुष्टि नहीं हुई है कि.
- No personal opinion presented as part of the report itself.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- The source is named clearly and appears before or alongside the first claim.
- Reported statements are introduced with an appropriate reporting verb and कि.
- Uncertainty is marked rather than presented as settled fact.
- Personal opinion, if included at all, is clearly separated from the reported content.
- Gender, number, agreement, and oblique forms are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: स्रोत बताना
With a partner, take turns inventing a one-sentence news claim and introducing it with रिपोर्ट के अनुसार or के मुताबिक़.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: ख़बर सुनाना
Choose a short real or invented news item. Orally summarize it for your partner, naming the source, reporting at least one statement, and marking one detail as unconfirmed. Your partner should ask one follow-up question about where the information came from.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record a one- to two-minute spoken summary of a short news item, following the source-claim-statement-uncertainty structure, and then listen back to check that your own opinion is clearly separated from the reported content.
Culture and Communication
Hindi news style varies considerably across national newspapers, local community websites, television broadcasts, and social media. Headlines are often more compressed and formal than conversation, while community reports like the ones in this chapter tend to read more like connected prose. Learners should expect variation across sources rather than assuming one fixed "news Hindi."
Reporting what a source says is not the same as agreeing with it. As Priya notes in the Model Dialogue, a careful reader or speaker keeps the report's content separate from their own view, even when they are glad about the news. This distinction matters across many public and professional contexts, not only in journalism, and applies whether the news is positive, negative, or uncertain.
Common Mistakes
Error: Writing नई पार्किंग जगह बनेगी as if it were an established fact, without saying where this information came from.
Correction: Name the source before or alongside the claim: रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, नई पार्किंग जगह बनेगी।
Error: Writing रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, यह एक बहुत अच्छा फ़ैसला है, which presents a personal judgment as though it were part of the report itself.
Correction: Separate the reported content from personal opinion: रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, नगर निगम नई पार्किंग जगह पर विचार कर रहा है। मेरे हिसाब से, यह एक अच्छा फ़ैसला होगा।
Error: Stating काम अगले महीने पूरा हो जाएगा when the source only said the timeline was uncertain.
Correction: Mark the uncertainty explicitly: यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि काम कब तक पूरा होगा।
Chapter Review

भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Fill in the correct connector or expression (के अनुसार, कहा कि, पूछा कि, or यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि):
- रिपोर्ट ______ , नई पार्किंग जगह पर विचार किया जा रहा है।
- अधिकारी ने ______ यह काम अगले कुछ महीनों में शुरू होगा।
- एक अभिभावक ने रिपोर्टर से ______ क्या स्कूल का समय भी बदलेगा।
- ______ काम कब तक पूरा होगा।

1. Return to the road-repair notice and identify the sentence where the spokesperson responds to the shopkeeper's question, and the sentence where the report marks something as unconfirmed.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Write your complete news summary, एक छोटी ख़बर का सारांश, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles Chapter 7's cause-result connectors and recommendation language, Volume II's controlled use of कि to report information, and honorific pronoun agreement, while introducing reported speech with कहा कि, बताया कि, and पूछा कि, source attribution with के अनुसार and के मुताबिक़, and marking uncertainty with यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि. It prepares learners for Chapter 9's shift toward comparison, evaluation, and recommendation.
