Volume III, Chapter 9: Comparison, Choice, and Recommendation · Speak and Write Hindi: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Compare two or three options in detail using a range of comparison structures.
  2. Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of an option using appropriate vocabulary.
  3. Explain your preferences and priorities clearly.
  4. Recommend a course, plan, service, or route and justify the choice with evidence.
  5. Distinguish neutral comparison from exaggerated advertising language.
  6. Write a structured recommendation with criteria, comparison, and a clear conclusion.

Communication Scenario

At the group's ninth meeting, the conversation returns to the school parking report from Chapter 8. Aditya has found that the municipal corporation is actually considering three different options for the space near Priya's school: a new parking lot, a widened drop-off lane, or a shuttle service from a nearby lot. The group compares the three options and prepares a short recommendation to send to the parents' committee.

  1. Notice how each option is introduced with a clear criterion: cost, convenience, or safety.
  2. Notice how the group uses से बेहतर, की तुलना में, and के मुकाबले to compare the three options against each other.
  3. Notice how a recommendation is introduced with मेरे हिसाब से or मैं सलाह दूँगी कि, and supported with a reason rather than stated as a bare preference.
  4. This chapter's task is to move from reporting what a source says (Chapter 8) to weighing options against each other and recommending one, using audience-appropriate language.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 9 completes Unit II, विचार, प्रमाण, और सार्वजनिक संवाद. It builds directly on Chapter 8's source-based reading and reporting by asking learners to weigh several reported options against one another and recommend one clearly.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners arrive from Chapter 8 with source attribution (के अनुसार, के मुताबिक़), reported speech (कहा कि, बताया कि), and a habit of marking uncertainty with यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि. They also bring Chapter 6's stance and hedging language and Volume II's basic comparison with से ज़्यादा and से अच्छा.

What This Chapter Does

This chapter expands comparison with की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, and सबसे; introduces evaluation clauses such as यह इसलिए बेहतर है क्योंकि...; and introduces recommendation frames such as मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि... and बेहतर होगा कि..., alongside concession with हालाँकि and फिर भी.

Looking Forward

Chapter 10 consolidates Unit II without introducing new grammar, integrating opinion, cause-result, source-based summary, and recommendation into one assessment.

Receptive vocabulary: review and rating language such as रेटिंग and समीक्षा; advertising expressions such as सबसे बढ़िया विकल्प and बेजोड़; and Hindi-English marketplace terms such as फ़ीचर, प्लान, and सर्विस, which are common in contemporary consumer Hindi.

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

Listening for criteria and final recommendation

Before listening, scan the Listening Practice questions so you know which criterion — cost, convenience, or safety — each speaker is discussing. Listen for the final recommendation separately from the reasons that lead up to it; the recommendation is often the last sentence in a speaker's turn.

Intonation for comparison and contrast

When comparing two options aloud, Hindi speakers often place slightly more stress on the item being favored. Practice reading शटल सेवा की तुलना में, नई पार्किंग जगह ज़्यादा व्यावहारिक है aloud, giving slightly more weight to पार्किंग जगह and व्यावहारिक.

Emphasis with ही, भी, and तो in evaluative speech

ही narrows focus onto the word before it (यही सबसे सस्ता विकल्प है — "this is the cheapest option"); भी adds an additional point (यह सुरक्षित भी है); तो can mark a concession before a contrast (यह सस्ता तो है, लेकिन धीमा भी है). These are receptive-to-controlled at this stage; recognize them in the Model Dialogue and Reading passage.

Schwa deletion in evaluative adjectives and formal nouns

Practice schwa deletion in this chapter's longer vocabulary: व्यावहारिक (vyaa-va-HAA-rik), विश्वसनीय (vish-vas-a-NEEY), and प्राथमिकता (praath-a-mik-TAA). Read each aloud in isolation, then inside a full sentence from the Model Dialogue below.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter introduces two closely related systems: expanded comparison with की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, and सबसे, and recommendation frames such as मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि and बेहतर होगा कि. Both systems support the structured recommendation organization introduced at the end of this section.

9.4 Expanded Comparison: से ज़्यादा, से बेहतर, की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, सबसे

Form: The item being compared takes से before an adjective (से ज़्यादा, से बेहतर, से कम), or takes की तुलना में / के मुकाबले as a fuller phrase, usually placed before the clause it modifies. The superlative uses सबसे plus an adjective.

Language Building Block — Comparison Frame
शटल सेवा की तुलना में, नई पार्किंग जगह ज़्यादा व्यावहारिक है, लेकिन यह शटल सेवा से महँगी भी है।
Compared to the shuttle service, the new parking space is more practical, but it is also more expensive than the shuttle service.

Meaning: की तुलना में and के मुकाबले both mean "compared to" or "against"; के मुकाबले is slightly more common in everyday speech, while की तुलना में is common in both speech and writing.

Use: Use सबसे plus an adjective when ranking three or more options: तीनों विकल्पों में, चौड़ी ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन सबसे सस्ता विकल्प है। ("Among the three options, the widened drop-off lane is the cheapest option.")

9.5 Evaluation Clauses: यह इसलिए बेहतर है क्योंकि...

Language Building Block — Evaluation + Reason
मेरे हिसाब से, नई पार्किंग जगह सबसे अच्छा विकल्प है; यह इसलिए बेहतर है क्योंकि यह सबसे सुरक्षित भी है और स्कूल के सबसे पास भी है।
In my view, the new parking space is the best option; it is better because it is also the safest and also the closest to the school.

Form: State the evaluation first (यह बेहतर है), then add इसलिए... क्योंकि... and one or more reasons.

Use: Do not evaluate without a reason. A bare preference such as मुझे यह पसंद है is acceptable in casual conversation, but a chapter-level recommendation must connect the evaluation to at least one criterion.

9.6 Recommendation Frames: मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि..., बेहतर होगा कि...

Language Building Block — Recommendation Frame
मैं सलाह दूँगी कि नगर निगम नई पार्किंग जगह को प्राथमिकता दे, क्योंकि यह लंबे समय में सबसे सुरक्षित और सबसे व्यावहारिक विकल्प है।
I would advise that the municipal corporation prioritize the new parking space, because it is the safest and most practical option in the long term.

Form: मैं सलाह दूँगा (masculine speaker) or मैं सलाह दूँगी (feminine speaker) is followed by कि and a recommended action; बेहतर होगा कि is a slightly softer, gender-neutral alternative recycled from Chapter 7.

Meaning: These frames mark a recommendation clearly as advice rather than as a demand or a simple description of fact.

Use: Choose the recommendation frame based on audience: बेहतर होगा कि works well for a group discussion, while मैं सलाह दूँगी कि is appropriate for a written recommendation addressed to a specific committee or authority.

9.7 Concession in Recommendation: हालाँकि... फिर भी...

Language Building Block — Concession Before Recommendation
हालाँकि नई पार्किंग जगह महँगी है, फिर भी यह सबसे सुरक्षित विकल्प है।
Although the new parking space is expensive, it is still the safest option.

Form: हालाँकि opens the concessive clause; फिर भी opens the contrasting clause that carries the main point.

Use: Use concession to acknowledge a disadvantage honestly before recommending an option anyway. This makes a recommendation more credible than ignoring a known drawback.

9.8 Paragraph Organization: Structured Recommendation

Organize a structured recommendation using four parts:

  1. Criteria — state what matters for the decision: इस फ़ैसले में तीन बातें ज़रूरी हैं: क़ीमत, सुविधा, और सुरक्षा।
  2. Comparison — compare the options against each other: शटल सेवा की तुलना में, नई पार्किंग जगह ज़्यादा सुरक्षित है।
  3. Concession, if relevant — acknowledge a disadvantage: हालाँकि यह महँगी है, फिर भी...
  4. Recommendation — state the recommendation clearly with a reason: इसलिए, मैं सलाह दूँगी कि नगर निगम नई पार्किंग जगह को प्राथमिकता दे।

Do not present a recommendation before establishing at least one criterion; the four-part structure above is the complete Chapter 9 target.

Model Dialogue

Setting: At the conversation group's ninth meeting, Aditya shares that the municipal corporation is weighing three options for the school parking problem, and the group compares them to prepare a short recommendation for the parents' committee.

आदित्य मैंने नगर निगम की वेबसाइट पर देखा — वे तीन विकल्पों पर विचार कर रहे हैं: एक नई पार्किंग जगह, एक चौड़ी ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन, या एक शटल सेवा। I looked at the municipal corporation's website — they're considering three options: a new parking space, a widened drop-off lane, or a shuttle service.
मीरा जी इन तीनों की तुलना कैसे करें? हमें कुछ मानदंड तय करने चाहिए। How should we compare these three? We should decide on some criteria.
प्रिया मेरे हिसाब से तीन बातें ज़रूरी हैं: क़ीमत, सुविधा, और सुरक्षा। In my view, three things matter: cost, convenience, and safety.
कबीर ठीक है। शटल सेवा की तुलना में, ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन ज़्यादा सस्ती होगी, लेकिन क्या यह उतनी सुरक्षित होगी? Okay. Compared to the shuttle service, the drop-off lane would be cheaper, but would it be as safe?
आदित्य रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन सबसे सस्ता विकल्प है, लेकिन नई पार्किंग जगह के मुकाबले इसमें बच्चों के सड़क पार करने का जोखिम ज़्यादा है। According to the report, the drop-off lane is the cheapest option, but compared to the new parking space, it carries a higher risk of children crossing the road.
मीरा जी और शटल सेवा? वह सबसे सुरक्षित लग रही है, लेकिन क्या वह सबसे व्यावहारिक भी है? And the shuttle service? It seems the safest, but is it also the most practical?
प्रिया शटल सेवा सुरक्षित तो है, लेकिन इसके लिए हर दिन एक ड्राइवर और एक तय समय-सारणी चाहिए। यह सबसे महँगा विकल्प भी है। The shuttle service is safe, but it needs a driver and a fixed schedule every day. It's also the most expensive option.
कबीर तो नई पार्किंग जगह की तुलना में शटल सेवा ज़्यादा जटिल है। So compared to the new parking space, the shuttle service is more complicated.
आदित्य हालाँकि नई पार्किंग जगह महँगी है, फिर भी यह ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन से ज़्यादा सुरक्षित है और शटल सेवा से ज़्यादा व्यावहारिक है। Although the new parking space is expensive, it is still safer than the drop-off lane and more practical than the shuttle service.
मीरा जी तो हम क्या सिफ़ारिश करेंगे? So what will we recommend?
प्रिया मैं सलाह दूँगी कि नगर निगम नई पार्किंग जगह को प्राथमिकता दे। यह सबसे महँगा विकल्प नहीं है, फिर भी यह सुरक्षा और सुविधा, दोनों में सबसे बेहतर है। I would advise that the municipal corporation prioritize the new parking space. It isn't the most expensive option, and still it is the best in both safety and convenience.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. नगर निगम किन तीन विकल्पों पर विचार कर रहा है? (What three options is the municipal corporation considering?)
  2. समूह ने तुलना के लिए कौन-से तीन मानदंड तय किए? (What three criteria did the group decide on for comparison?)
  3. प्रिया अंत में क्या सिफ़ारिश करती है, और क्यों? (What does Priya recommend at the end, and why?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
कौन-सी सेवा सस्ती है, लेकिन धीमी है? (Which service is cheaper but slower?)______
स्पीडवेब की तुलना में नेटलाइन का ग्राहक सहायता केंद्र कैसा है? (How is Netline's customer support compared to Speedweb's?)______
किन परिवारों के लिए नेटलाइन व्यावहारिक विकल्प है? (For which families is Netline a practical option?)______
पैसेज़ के अंत में कौन-सी बात मानी जाती है, हालाँकि स्पीडवेब महँगी है? (What is believed at the end, although Speedweb is expensive?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short adapted comparison review below, published on a community website, and then answer the questions.

Three school-bus services are available in our area: City Bus, Suraksha Van, and Sahyog Shuttle. City Bus is the cheapest, but its route has many stops, so children take longer to reach school. Compared to Suraksha Van, City Bus also has less supervision of children, since it has no separate attendant. Suraksha Van is considered the most reliable, because every van has an attendant in addition to a driver, but this service is also the most expensive. Sahyog Shuttle, compared to both of these, is a middle option: it is cheaper than Suraksha Van and safer than City Bus, although its route has limited seats. For parents whose top priority is cost, City Bus is a practical option. For those who need the most safety, Suraksha Van is the better option. Although Sahyog Shuttle has limited seats, it is still a balanced option between cost and safety.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. Identify the three options being compared and one criterion for each.
  2. Which option is described as the most reliable, and why?
  3. What concession does the text make about Sahyog Shuttle, and how is it balanced?
  4. Which option would you recommend to a family whose top priority is safety? Support your answer using the text.

Writing Workshop

Write a structured recommendation, एक सिफ़ारिश ("A Recommendation"), comparing two or three real or invented options (for example, transportation services, courses, apartments, or products your instructor approves).

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 140-200 word paragraph in standard Devanagari that includes:

  1. At least two stated criteria, such as cost, convenience, safety, or quality.
  2. At least two comparison sentences, using की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, or से ज़्यादा/कम/बेहतर.
  3. At least one concession, using हालाँकि... फिर भी....
  4. A clear final recommendation, introduced with मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि or बेहतर होगा कि and supported with a reason.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • At least two criteria are named before the comparison begins.
  • Comparisons are accurate and use an appropriate comparison structure.
  • The concession, if included, acknowledges a genuine disadvantage rather than a minor detail.
  • The recommendation is stated clearly and supported with at least one reason.
  • Gender, number, agreement, and oblique forms are applied correctly throughout.
  • Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: तुलना करना

With a partner, take turns comparing two familiar everyday items (two restaurants, two routes to a familiar place, two phones) using की तुलना में or के मुकाबले.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: सिफ़ारिश देना

Choose two or three real or invented options relevant to a shared need (a service, a plan, a route). State at least two criteria, compare the options, acknowledge one disadvantage of your recommended option, and give a clear recommendation. Your partner should ask one follow-up question about your reasoning.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record a one- to two-minute spoken recommendation following the criteria-comparison-concession-recommendation structure, then listen back to check that your recommendation is clearly supported by at least one reason.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Recommendations depend on audience, budget, and need

A good recommendation is not the same for every listener. As the group discovers in the Model Dialogue, the "best" option depends on which criterion matters most to the person or committee receiving the recommendation. Skilled speakers and writers adjust their recommendation, or at least their emphasis, to the audience's stated priorities rather than assuming one option is universally correct.

Culture in Context — Distinguishing comparison from advertising

Marketing language in Hindi, as in many languages, often mixes Hindi and English and tends toward exaggerated superlatives such as सबसे बढ़िया or बेजोड़ without clear criteria. A neutral comparison, by contrast, names specific criteria and acknowledges disadvantages honestly. Learners should notice this difference when reading reviews, advertisements, or product descriptions.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Comparing without naming a criterion

Error: Writing नई पार्किंग जगह बेहतर है without specifying what makes it better.

Correction: Connect the evaluation to a reason: नई पार्किंग जगह इसलिए बेहतर है क्योंकि यह ज़्यादा सुरक्षित है।

Common Mistake — Confusing की तुलना में and से

Error: Writing शटल सेवा की तुलना में सस्ता without completing the comparison, leaving it unclear what is cheaper than what.

Correction: Name both items clearly: शटल सेवा की तुलना में, ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन सस्ती है। or use the shorter form: ड्रॉप-ऑफ़ लेन शटल सेवा से सस्ती है।

Common Mistake — Recommending without acknowledging a disadvantage

Error: Recommending an option as though it had no drawbacks at all, which can sound like advertising rather than a fair recommendation.

Correction: Acknowledge a known disadvantage honestly: हालाँकि नई पार्किंग जगह महँगी है, फिर भी मैं सलाह दूँगी कि नगर निगम इसे प्राथमिकता दे।

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. The municipal corporation is considering a new parking space, a widened drop-off lane, and a shuttle service.
  2. The group decided on cost, convenience, and safety as their three criteria.
  3. Priya recommends the new parking space, because although it is not the cheapest option, it is the best in both safety and convenience.

Listening

  • Netline is cheaper but slower.
  • Netline's customer support is described as less reliable compared to Speedweb's.
  • Netline is a practical option for families whose top priority is cost.
  • It is believed that, in the long term, Speedweb can be more beneficial despite being expensive.

Reading — Comprehension

  1. City Bus (cheapest, but more stops/less supervision), Suraksha Van (most reliable/supervised, but most expensive), and Sahyog Shuttle (cheaper than the van, safer than the bus, but limited seats).
  2. Suraksha Van is described as the most reliable, because every van has an attendant in addition to a driver.
  3. The text concedes that Sahyog Shuttle has limited seats, but balances this by noting that it is cheaper than the van and safer than the bus.
  4. Sample answer: Suraksha Van, because the text states it is the most reliable and most supervised option for families prioritizing safety.

Chapter Review — भाग B

  1. (a) की तुलना में; (b) सबसे; (c) इसलिए... क्योंकि; (d) मैं सलाह दूँगी कि.
  2. Sample answer: मुझे शटल सेवा इसलिए पसंद है क्योंकि यह सबसे सुरक्षित विकल्प है।

Looking Ahead

अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now

You can compare two or three options in detail, evaluate their advantages and disadvantages with clear criteria, acknowledge a genuine drawback honestly, and write a structured recommendation supported by reasons and audience-appropriate language.

आगे बढ़ते हुए: अध्याय 10 — Continuing on: Chapter 10

Chapter 10, समीक्षा 2: समझाना और मनाना ("Unit II Assessment: Explaining and Persuading"), consolidates Chapters 6-9 without introducing new grammar, integrating opinion, cause-result explanation, source-based summary, and comparison-recommendation into one assessed performance.
