समीक्षा 2: समझाना और मनाना
Chapter Objectives
This review chapter introduces no new grammar. By the end of it, you will be able to:
- State and support an opinion with reasons, examples, and appropriate hedging.
- Explain a problem, identify its causes and results, and propose a realistic solution.
- Summarize a short news item or public-information source and attribute information accurately.
- Compare two or three options and make an audience-appropriate recommendation.
- Agree, disagree, and partially agree politely while responding to another person's view.
- Produce one integrated spoken and written performance that combines opinion, evidence, comparison, and conclusion.
Communication Scenario
The parents' committee has asked the conversation group to turn their Chapter 9 discussion into a single written recommendation, supported by the news report from Chapter 8 and the group's own reasoning from Chapters 6 and 7. At the group's tenth meeting, Priya, Aditya, Kabir, and Meera Ji prepare this combined explanation together, checking that every claim is either their own supported opinion or something clearly attributed to a source.
- Notice how the group distinguishes what the report says (Chapter 8) from what they themselves believe (Chapter 6).
- Notice how they connect the parking problem's causes and results (Chapter 7) to their final comparison and recommendation (Chapter 9).
- Notice how disagreement is handled politely, with partial agreement before a counterpoint.
- This chapter's task is integration: combining four chapters' worth of language into one coherent, evidence-based recommendation.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 10 is the Unit II assessment chapter. It does not introduce new grammar, vocabulary domains, or text types. Instead, it asks learners to combine the four systems developed across Chapters 6-9 into one integrated performance.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners arrive with opinion and hedging language from Chapter 6 (मेरे विचार में, शायद, संभव है कि), cause-result and problem-solution language from Chapter 7 (के कारण, की वजह से, इसलिए), source attribution and reported information from Chapter 8 (के अनुसार, कहा कि, बताया कि), and comparison and recommendation frames from Chapter 9 (की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि, बेहतर होगा कि).
What This Chapter Does
This chapter does not add new structures. It reviews all four systems together, gives extended integrated practice in listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and assesses learners' emerging B2 control of explanation, evidence, comparison, and audience-aware persuasion.
Looking Forward
Chapter 11, जो, जिस, जहाँ, opens Unit III by expanding relative-correlative structures for more flexible description and reference tracking.
Unit II Vocabulary Review
The table below recycles key vocabulary from Chapters 6-9. Review each item in the sentence frame shown, not as an isolated word.
10.1 Opinion, Cause-Result, Source, and Recommendation Vocabulary
| Hindi | Meaning | Source Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| मेरे विचार में, मुझे लगता है कि | in my view, I think that | Chapter 6 |
| शायद, संभव है कि | perhaps, it's possible that | Chapter 6 |
| उदाहरण के लिए | for example | Chapter 6 |
| कारण, परिणाम, समाधान | cause, result, solution | Chapter 7 |
| के कारण, की वजह से | because of, due to | Chapter 7 |
| चाहिए, बेहतर होगा कि | should, it would be better if | Chapter 7 |
| रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, के मुताबिक़ | according to the report | Chapter 8 |
| कहा कि, बताया कि | said that, reported that | Chapter 8 |
| यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि | it isn't clear that | Chapter 8 |
| विकल्प, प्राथमिकता, सिफ़ारिश | option, priority, recommendation | Chapter 9 |
| की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, सबसे | compared to, against, most | Chapter 9 |
| मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि | I would advise that | Chapter 9 |
| हालाँकि... फिर भी... | although... still... | Chapters 6, 9 |
10.2 Polite Agreement, Disagreement, and Qualification
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| मैं आपसे सहमत हूँ | I agree with you | full agreement |
| मैं कुछ हद तक सहमत हूँ, लेकिन... | I agree to some extent, but... | partial agreement before a counterpoint; new frame for this chapter's integration |
| मुझे लगता है कि यह पूरी तरह सही नहीं है | I think this isn't entirely correct | polite disagreement; softened with मुझे लगता है कि |
| यह एक अच्छा बिंदु है, लेकिन... | that's a good point, but... | acknowledges before contrasting |
| क्या आप इसे और समझा सकते हैं? | could you explain that further? | clarification request rather than direct disagreement |
Note: The agreement/disagreement frames above combine politeness patterns already active since Chapter 6; no new grammar system is introduced. कुछ हद तक ("to some extent") is presented here as a formulaic phrase for partial agreement.
Pronunciation and Listening Review
Review schwa deletion across this unit's longer words: प्राथमिकता (praath-a-mik-TAA), व्यावहारिक (vyaa-va-HAA-rik), विश्वसनीय (vish-vas-a-NEEY), and परिणाम (pa-ri-NAAM). Read each aloud in isolation, then inside a full sentence from the Model Dialogue below.
Before listening, identify what kind of information you are listening for: an opinion (Chapter 6), a cause-result relationship (Chapter 7), a reported fact with a source (Chapter 8), or a comparison and recommendation (Chapter 9). Naming the type of information first makes it easier to summarize accurately afterward.
Review quotation punctuation from Chapter 8 alongside comparison punctuation from Chapter 9: a source attribution phrase such as रिपोर्ट के अनुसार is normally followed by a comma before the reported clause, while a comparison phrase such as की तुलना में is normally followed by a comma before the main clause it modifies.
Review the emphasis markers ही, भी, and तो from Chapter 9. In argument and persuasion, these markers help a speaker narrow focus (यही सबसे बड़ी समस्या है), add a supporting point (यह महँगा भी है), or introduce a concession before a contrast (यह सस्ता तो है, लेकिन...).
Grammar Review: Unit II Systems
This chapter introduces no new grammar. The four systems below, one from each of Chapters 6-9, must now work together in a single connected performance.
10.3 Opinion and Hedging (Chapter 6)
10.4 Cause, Result, and Solution (Chapter 7)
10.5 Source Attribution and Neutral Summary (Chapter 8)
10.6 Comparison and Recommendation (Chapter 9)
10.7 Integrating the Four Systems
A complete Unit II performance normally moves through the four systems in this order: state an opinion with a reason (10.3); explain the underlying cause and result (10.4); support the opinion with a source (10.5); and compare options before recommending one (10.6). Not every task requires all four in every paragraph, but a strong argument connects them rather than treating them as separate exercises.
Use: When agreeing, disagreeing, or qualifying another person's argument, connect your response to the specific system they used: challenge a cause-result claim with evidence, not with a bare opinion, and challenge a bare opinion by asking for a reason or source.
Model Dialogue
Setting: At the conversation group's tenth meeting, the group drafts their combined recommendation for the parents' committee, weaving together opinion, cause-result explanation, source attribution, and comparison from the previous four chapters.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- कौन-सी बातें रिपोर्ट से आई हैं, और कौन-सी बातें समूह की अपनी राय हैं? (Which points come from the report, and which points are the group's own opinion?)
- कबीर मीरा जी और प्रिया की बातों से कैसे कुछ हद तक असहमत होता है? (How does Kabir partially disagree with Meera Ji and Priya?)
- समूह की अंतिम सिफ़ारिश क्या है, और वे इसे किन कारणों से सही ठहराते हैं? (What is the group's final recommendation, and what reasons do they give for it?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, समस्या का कारण क्या है? (According to the report, what is the cause of the problem?) | ______ |
| यह समस्या किस पर सीधा असर डालती है, वक्ता के विचार में? (What does this problem directly affect, in the speaker's view?) | ______ |
| दोनों विकल्पों में से कौन-सा सस्ता और तेज़ है? (Which of the two options is cheaper and faster?) | ______ |
| वक्ता अंत में क्या सिफ़ारिश करता है, और क्यों? (What does the speaker recommend at the end, and why?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short adapted opinion-and-recommendation article below, published on a community website, and then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Identify one sentence in the text that is clearly attributed to a source, and one sentence that is clearly the author's own opinion.
- What causes and results does the text describe regarding the old equipment?
- Which two options are compared, and what is the outcome of the comparison?
- What concession does the text make, and how is it balanced by the final recommendation?
Writing Workshop
Write an integrated Unit II performance, एक समझाने वाला निबंध ("An Explanatory Essay"), on a local or community issue of your choice (or one your instructor assigns).
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 180-220 word text in standard Devanagari that includes all four of the following, clearly connected to one another:
- An opinion with at least one reason and one example (Chapter 6 pattern).
- At least one cause-result explanation using के कारण, की वजह से, or इसलिए (Chapter 7 pattern).
- At least one piece of attributed information, using के अनुसार or a reporting verb such as बताया कि (Chapter 8 pattern).
- A comparison of two options and a final recommendation, including at least one concession with हालाँकि... फिर भी... (Chapter 9 pattern).
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- Opinion, cause-result, source attribution, and comparison-recommendation are all present and clearly distinguishable.
- Every attributed claim is marked with a source phrase or reporting verb, not stated as if it were the writer's own knowledge.
- The concession acknowledges a genuine disadvantage rather than a minor detail.
- The final recommendation is stated clearly and connects back to the earlier cause-result explanation.
- Gender, number, agreement, and oblique forms are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: चारों प्रणालियाँ जोड़ना
With a partner, take turns building one connected argument aloud: first state an opinion, then add a cause-result explanation, then attribute one fact to an imagined source, then compare two options and recommend one.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: सहमति और असहमति
Present your Writing Workshop argument to a partner. Your partner should respond with full agreement, partial agreement (मैं कुछ हद तक सहमत हूँ, लेकिन...), or polite disagreement, and should ask at least one clarification question before responding.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record a two- to three-minute spoken explanation and recommendation that includes all four Unit II systems, then listen back and check off each system on the editing checklist above.
Culture and Communication
In many public and institutional settings, clearly separating personal opinion from reported fact is considered a mark of credibility, not a formality to skip. As Meera Ji models in the dialogue above, distinguishing रिपोर्ट के अनुसार from मेरे विचार में helps a recommendation sound trustworthy to a committee or audience that does not share the speaker's assumptions.
Kabir's response, मैं आपसे कुछ हद तक सहमत हूँ, लेकिन..., models a common and valued discussion strategy: acknowledging the validity of another person's point before adding a distinct one. This differs from flatly agreeing or flatly disagreeing, and it tends to keep group discussion collaborative rather than adversarial.
Common Mistakes
Error: Writing पार्किंग की समस्या गंभीर है और नगर निगम तीन विकल्पों पर विचार कर रहा है as one undifferentiated claim, without marking which part is opinion and which part is reported.
Correction: Mark each part separately: मेरे विचार में, पार्किंग की समस्या गंभीर है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, नगर निगम तीन विकल्पों पर विचार कर रहा है।
Error: Jumping directly to a comparison of options without first explaining what problem the options are meant to solve.
Correction: Establish the cause and result first: भीड़ के कारण सड़क पार करना मुश्किल है। इसलिए, आइए विकल्पों की तुलना करें।
Error: Responding to another speaker with a flat contradiction such as यह सही नहीं है without acknowledging what was valid in their point.
Correction: Use a softened, partial-agreement frame: यह एक अच्छा बिंदु है, लेकिन मुझे लगता है कि...
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Model Dialogue, Listening passage, and Reading text and answer in English:
- In each of the three sources, identify one sentence that is opinion and one sentence that is reported fact.
- Explain how Kabir's partial agreement changes the group's final written explanation.
भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Label each sentence below as Opinion (O), Cause-Result (C), Source Attribution (S), or Comparison-Recommendation (R):
- रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, दो बच्चे घायल हुए।
- भीड़ की वजह से सड़क पार करना मुश्किल है।
- मेरे विचार में, यह एक गंभीर समस्या है।
- हालाँकि नए उपकरण महँगे हैं, फिर भी मैं सलाह दूँगा कि नगर निगम इन्हें लगाए।
2. Rewrite the following flat disagreement so that it acknowledges the other person's point first: यह गलत है।
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. Return to the park-equipment article and identify the sentence that connects the earlier cause-result explanation to the final recommendation.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Write your complete integrated explanation, एक समझाने वाला निबंध, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.
Cumulative Review
This chapter integrates Chapter 6's opinion and hedging, Chapter 7's cause-result and problem-solution language, Chapter 8's source attribution and reported information, and Chapter 9's comparison and recommendation frames, while adding the formulaic partial-agreement phrase कुछ हद तक सहमत हूँ. It prepares learners for Unit III's expansion into relative-correlative structures, reported speech, and conditional meaning beginning in Chapter 11.
Unit II Assessment Task
समझाना और मनाना — Explaining and Persuading
Complete the following connected tasks in order. This is the Unit II assessment; it draws on Chapters 6 through 9 as a whole.
- Listen to the library-problem passage above and complete the listening table.
- Read the park-equipment article and answer the comprehension questions.
- Speak a two- to three-minute integrated explanation and recommendation on a community issue, including opinion, cause-result, a source attribution, and a comparison-recommendation with one concession. A partner (or recording) should respond with agreement, partial agreement, or polite disagreement.
- Write your complete 180-220 word integrated explanatory essay, एक समझाने वाला निबंध, following the Writing Workshop checklist.
- Edit your written text for the presence and clarity of all four Unit II systems, source attribution accuracy, concession honesty, and a clearly supported final recommendation.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Task completion | Opinion, cause-result, source attribution, and comparison-recommendation are all present and clearly connected. |
| Opinion and evidence | The opinion is supported with at least one reason and one example, not left as a bare preference. |
| Cause-result clarity | Correct use of के कारण, की वजह से, इसलिए, or equivalent connectors. |
| Source attribution accuracy | Reported information is clearly marked as such and distinguished from the writer's own opinion. |
| Comparison and recommendation | Correct use of की तुलना में, के मुकाबले, or सबसे, with a genuine concession and a clearly stated recommendation. |
| Interactional politeness | Agreement, partial agreement, or disagreement is expressed with appropriate softening. |
| Comprehensibility and pronunciation | Intelligible spoken delivery with appropriate emphasis; accurate Devanagari spelling and punctuation in writing. |
This task evaluates emerging B2 control of explanation, evidence, source use, comparison, and audience-aware persuasion across the whole of Unit II. Prioritize a clear, well-integrated performance over exhaustive vocabulary range.
Answer Key
Model Dialogue — Comprehension
- Reported facts: the municipal corporation is considering three options; an official reported the decision will come next month. Opinion: crowding is making road-crossing dangerous for children.
- Kabir's partial agreement leads the group to add traffic as a second cause alongside crowding, and to add an explanation of why the recommended option's cost is reasonable, making the final recommendation more balanced and credible.
- The group recommends the new parking space, because it best solves both the crowding and traffic problems, even though it is not the cheapest option.
Listening
- The cause is a lack of space in the library.
- In the speaker's view, it directly affects students' studies.
- Opening an additional study room in the community center is cheaper and faster.
- The speaker recommends expanding the library, because of its long-term benefit, despite the higher cost and time required.
Reading — Comprehension
- Reported: "एक अभिभावक ने बताया कि उपकरण की मरम्मत कई बार माँगी गई है।" Opinion: "मेरे विचार में भी... नगर निगम को नए उपकरण को प्राथमिकता देनी चाहिए।"
- The old equipment is no longer safe and caused two mild injuries last year, so families now hesitate to visit the park, reducing children's play space.
- Repairing the old equipment versus installing new equipment; the new equipment is more expensive but longer-lasting and safer in the long term.
- The text concedes that new equipment costs more, but balances this by noting it will prove cheaper than repeated repairs over time.
Chapter Review — भाग B
- (a) S; (b) C; (c) O; (d) R.
- Sample answer: यह एक अच्छा बिंदु है, लेकिन मुझे लगता है कि यह पूरी तरह सही नहीं है।
Looking Ahead
अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now
You can state and support an opinion, explain a problem's causes and results, summarize and attribute information from a source, compare options and recommend one, and respond to another person's view with appropriate agreement, partial agreement, or polite disagreement — combining all of these into one connected spoken or written performance.
