जब, जबकि, और जैसे
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Connect two events or situations by their time relationship using जब...तब.
- Contrast two situations, viewpoints, or facts using जबकि.
- Describe manner, process, and similarity using जैसे and वैसे.
- Explain what happens when a time frame or background circumstance is present.
- Interpret जब, जबकि, and जैसे accurately in connected reading and listening.
- Write an explanatory paragraph that uses temporal and contrastive clauses clearly, without overloading a single sentence.
Communication Scenario
The neighborhood directory is finished, and Meera Ji's group meets for a twelfth session to plan a short orientation talk for new residents — explaining how life in the neighborhood has changed, what tends to happen at different times of day and year, and how the neighborhood compares with where some residents lived before. Priya, Aditya, and Kabir quickly find that description alone is not enough; they need language that connects events in time, contrasts one situation with another, and explains how something is done.
- Notice how the group moves from separate sentences toward sentences that link a time frame to what happens within it.
- Notice how जबकि lets a speaker hold two facts side by side without one canceling the other.
- Notice how जैसे and वैसे let the group explain a process or compare one thing to another without a long explanation.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 12 continues Unit III, जटिल वाक्य और स्वतंत्र अभिव्यक्ति. Chapter 11 expanded जो...वह into जिस...उस, जिसका...उसका, and जहाँ...वहाँ for precise description. This chapter uses the same two-clause sentence-linking skill for a different purpose: connecting events by time, holding two situations in contrast, and describing manner or similarity. Chapter 13 will then move from time and contrast to condition and possibility.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners can already build a two-clause relative-correlative sentence with a clear comma pause and a matching correlative form, and can track reference across that pause without losing clarity.
What This Chapter Does
This chapter applies the same clause-linking logic to three new connectors: जब...तब for time, जबकि for contrast, and जैसे...वैसे for manner and similarity. It stays within explanation and comparison; it does not introduce conditionals, reported speech, or new relative forms.
Looking Forward
Chapter 13, अगर, चाहे, और संभावना, builds on this chapter's clause-linking control to discuss conditions, concessions, and possibilities.
Core Vocabulary
This chapter's productive vocabulary supports explaining time relationships, contrast, and process. Learn each item inside the sentence frame shown, not as an isolated word.
12.1 Time, Process, and Situation
| Hindi | Meaning | Gender/Notes |
|---|---|---|
| प्रक्रिया | process | feminine |
| स्थिति | situation, condition | feminine |
| दौर | period, phase | masculine |
| पृष्ठभूमि | background | feminine |
| फ़र्क़, अंतर | difference | masculine |
| समानता | similarity | feminine |
| तरीक़ा | manner, method | masculine |
| बदलाव | change | masculine |
12.2 Temporal and Contrastive Connectors
| Connector | Related Form | Function |
|---|---|---|
| जब | तब (often omitted) | when → at that time (temporal clause) |
| जबकि | — | whereas / while, in fact (contrast) |
| जैसे | वैसे | as, the way that → in that way (manner/similarity) |
| उस समय | — | at that time |
| इसी दौरान | — | during this same time |
| एक तरफ़ ... दूसरी तरफ़ | — | on one hand ... on the other hand |
| इसके विपरीत | — | in contrast to this |
12.3 Explaining and Comparing Expressions
| Hindi | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| दरअसल | actually, in fact | introduces a clarifying contrast |
| वैसे ही | in just that way | emphatic form of वैसे, formulaic in this chapter |
| पहले जैसा | like before | comparison with a past state |
| जिस तरह से | in the way that | recognition-only variant of जैसे |
Forms such as जैसा कि, जिस तरह, जहाँ तक, तभी, and तब तक appear in this chapter's reading passage for recognition only. You are not expected to produce these formal or extended contrast markers independently yet; treat them as glossed items.
Pronunciation and Listening Focus
Practice reading these forms aloud, paying attention to schwa deletion: जबकि (JAB-ki, not ja-ba-ki), दरअसल (da-RAS-al), and पृष्ठभूमि (PRISHTH-bhoo-mi). Compare जैसे / वैसे aloud several times so the parallel sound pattern becomes automatic, just as you practiced जहाँ / वहाँ in Chapter 11.
A temporal or contrastive sentence has two natural phrase groups, just like the relative-correlative sentences of Chapter 11. Pause briefly at the comma: जब बारिश होती है, || तब सड़कों पर पानी भर जाता है। For जबकि, use a slightly falling-then-level tone before the connector to signal that a contrast is coming, and keep both halves of the contrast at a similar pace so neither side sounds more important than the other.
Before listening, remind yourself that जबकि signals that two facts are being placed side by side, often to highlight a difference. Listen past the first clause for the word जबकि itself, and then listen for what changes in the second clause. Missing the contrast marker is the most common reason learners hear two facts but miss the comparison being made.
Grammar: Time, Contrast, and Manner
You already know how to build a two-clause sentence with a comma pause and a matching correlative form from Chapter 11's relative-correlative work. This chapter applies that same logic to three new connectors, each suited to a different communicative job: time, contrast, and manner.
12.4 जब...तब — Time Relationships
Form: जब + clause + comma + (तब) + main clause. Use: connecting a time frame or repeated situation to what happens within it. Meaning: "when X, Y (happens/happened/happens habitually)."
Note: In natural spoken Hindi, तब is very often dropped once the time relationship is clear from जब alone: जब बारिश होती है, सड़कों पर पानी भर जाता है। Both versions are correct; the version with तब is slightly more formal or emphatic.
12.5 जबकि — Contrast
जबकi places two facts side by side, usually to highlight a difference between them. Unlike लेकिन, which simply adds a contrasting idea, जबकि frames the two clauses as a direct comparison.
Form: clause 1 + comma + जबकि + clause 2. Use: comparing two time periods, two people, two places, or two viewpoints. Meaning: "whereas," "while, in fact," or "even though" in a comparative (not conditional) sense.
Note: जबकि can appear at the start of a sentence or between the two clauses; the meaning does not change: जबकि आज यहाँ पूरा बाज़ार है, पहले यहाँ सिर्फ़ एक छोटी दुकान थी।
12.6 जैसे...वैसे — Manner and Similarity
Form: जैसे + clause + comma + वैसे (+ ही) + main clause. Use: describing that one action, process, or quality resembles another. Meaning: "just as X, (in that same way) Y."
Note: जैसे alone (without a matching वैसे clause) is also common as a simple comparison marker meaning "like" or "such as": यह जगह एक बाज़ार जैसी है। ("This place is like a market.") Distinguish this simpler use from the full जैसे...वैसे two-clause pattern.
12.7 Backgrounding with Past Progressive and Habitual-Past Patterns
जब clauses often set a background situation using past progressive or habitual-past forms, while the main clause reports what happened within that background.
This pattern recycles the past habitual (रहते थे) you already control from Volume II, now placed inside a जब clause to build extended background description.
12.8 Keeping Complex Sentences Clear
As in Chapter 11, keep each sentence to two clauses at this stage. Natural spoken Hindi sometimes reverses clause order or drops तब, but do not chain a जब clause, a जबकि clause, and a जैसे clause together in one sentence. Use separate sentences instead, and let discourse markers such as इसी दौरान or इसके विपरीत connect them at the paragraph level.
Do not treat जबकि as identical to लेकिन. लेकिन simply adds a contrasting idea anywhere in a conversation; जबकि specifically frames two clauses as a structured comparison, and it sounds more explanatory or written in style.
Model Dialogue
Setting: At the group's twelfth meeting, Meera Ji, Priya, Aditya, and Kabir plan a short orientation talk for new residents about how the neighborhood works and how it has changed.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- सुबह होने पर मोहल्ले में क्या होता है? (What happens in the neighborhood when it's morning?)
- जबकि का इस्तेमाल कबीर ने किस तुलना के लिए किया? (What comparison did Kabir use jabki for?)
- होली और दिवाली की तुलना करने के लिए आदित्य ने कौन-सा पैटर्न इस्तेमाल किया? (Which pattern did Aditya use to compare Holi and Diwali?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace, pausing briefly at each comma. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| सर्दियों में सुबह क्या रहता है, और इससे क्या मुश्किल होती है? (What is present on winter mornings, and what difficulty does it cause?) | ______ |
| कौन-सा मौसम सबसे सुहावना बताया गया है, और उस समय लोग क्या करते हैं? (Which season is described as most pleasant, and what do people do at that time?) | ______ |
| पुरानी पीढ़ी सुबह कहाँ जाती थी, और आजकल युवा कहाँ जाते हैं? (Where did the older generation go in the morning, and where do young people go nowadays?) | ______ |
Note: The phrase जिससे in this passage is receptive only; you do not need to produce it independently at this stage.
Reading Practice
Read the adapted orientation-talk excerpt below, drafted by Meera Ji's group, and then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Identify one example each of जब...तब, जबकि, and जैसे...वैसे in the text.
- Why does the lane stay almost empty in the afternoon?
- What contrast is described between older residents and new families?
- What does the neighborhood committee try to do, according to the passage?
Writing Workshop
Write a short explanatory text, हमारे मोहल्ले का रोज़मर्रा का दौर ("The Daily Rhythm of Our Neighborhood"), about a real or invented neighborhood, campus, or community you know, explaining how it changes across the day, the year, or over time.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 120-160 word text in standard Devanagari that includes:
- At least one जब...तब sentence connecting a time frame to what happens within it.
- At least one जबकि sentence contrasting two time periods, people, or situations.
- At least one जैसे...वैसे sentence describing a manner, process, or similarity.
- At least one discourse connector such as इसी दौरान, एक तरफ़...दूसरी तरफ़, or इसके विपरीत linking your ideas at the paragraph level.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- Each sentence stays limited to two clauses; no जब, जबकि, and जैसे clause is chained together in one sentence.
- जबकि is used only where two situations are being directly compared, not as a general substitute for लेकिन.
- A comma separates the two clauses in each temporal, contrastive, or manner sentence.
- Past habitual and past progressive forms are used accurately inside background जब clauses.
- Gender, number, agreement, and postpositions are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: तीन उपकरण पहचानना
With a partner, take turns describing a daily or seasonal pattern from your own life using one of the three patterns. Your partner should say which pattern (जब...तब, जबकि, or जैसे...वैसे) you used and why.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: नए निवासियों के लिए बातचीत
Present a short oral orientation talk about a place you know, explaining how it changes across the day or year and how it compares to somewhere else. Your partner should ask one follow-up question about the contrast or comparison you made.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record yourself describing three patterns in a place you know well, using each of the three connectors once. Listen back and check that each temporal or contrastive sentence stays clear and limited to two clauses.
Culture and Communication
Explaining how a neighborhood, campus, or community changes across the day and across seasons is a common and useful way to orient a newcomer in many Hindi-speaking contexts. This kind of explanation often relies on exactly the temporal and contrastive tools taught in this chapter, rather than on a single static description.
As the chapter scope notes, contrast can be made politely without direct confrontation. When comparing an older way of doing things with a newer one — as in the reading passage's contrast between older residents and new families — speakers often add a phrase acknowledging both sides, such as दोनों की अपनी जगह है ("each has its own place"), rather than framing one side as simply right or wrong.
Common Mistakes
Error: Using जबकि anywhere a simple contrast word would work, even when no direct two-situation comparison is being made.
Correction: Reserve जबकि for structured comparisons between two clearly defined situations, such as दस साल पहले यहाँ कम गाड़ियाँ थीं, जबकि आजकल हमेशा ट्रैफ़िक रहता है। Use लेकिन for a simple contrasting remark elsewhere.
Error: जब बारिश होती है सड़कों पर पानी भर जाता है। (no pause, sentence runs together)
Correction: जब बारिश होती है, सड़कों पर पानी भर जाता है। — the comma marks the boundary between the time clause and the main clause and should also be reflected as a brief pause in speech.
Error: जब सुबह होती है, तब सब्ज़ी वाला आता है, जबकि दोपहर में जैसे गली ख़ाली रहती है, वैसे शाम को नहीं रहती। (three connectors chained together, unclear)
Correction: Split into separate sentences: जब सुबह होती है, तब सब्ज़ी वाला आता है। जबकि दोपहर में गली ख़ाली रहती है, शाम को स्थिति बदल जाती है। — clarity matters more than combining every idea into one sentence.
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Model Dialogue and Reading passage and answer in English:
- Give one example each of जब...तब and जबकि from the Model Dialogue.
- Explain, in your own words, why Mira Ji says जबकि should be used only for a direct comparison between two situations.
भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Fill in the blank with जब, जबकि, or जैसे as appropriate:
- ______ मैं छोटा था, तब हम गाँव में रहते थे।
- पहले यहाँ कोई स्कूल नहीं था, ______ आज यहाँ दो स्कूल हैं।
- ______ मेरी माँ खाना बनाती हैं, वैसे ही मैंने भी सीख लिया है।
- ______ सर्दी आती है, तब हमें गर्म कपड़ों की ज़रूरत होती है।
2. Combine each pair of sentences into one sentence using जबकि: पहले यह गली शांत थी। आज यह गली बहुत व्यस्त है।
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. Return to the orientation-talk reading and identify the sentence that uses जैसे...वैसे. What does it describe?
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Write your complete "Daily Rhythm" text, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles Chapter 11's two-clause sentence-linking skills and comma-pause phrasing, Volume II's past habitual and past progressive forms, and comparison vocabulary, while introducing जब...तब, जबकि, and जैसे...वैसे for time, contrast, and manner. It prepares learners for Chapter 13's conditions and possibilities, which build on the same clause-linking foundation.
Practical Performance Task
नए निवासियों के लिए बातचीत — The Newcomer Orientation Talk
Complete the following connected tasks in order.
- Listen to the daily-rhythm passage above and complete the listening table.
- Read the orientation-talk excerpt and answer the comprehension questions.
- Speak a short oral orientation talk about a place you know, using each of the three patterns at least once, and respond to your partner's follow-up question.
- Write your complete 120-160 word "Daily Rhythm" text, following the Writing Workshop checklist.
- Edit your written text for correct comma pauses, appropriate use of जबकि versus लेकिन, and clear, uncluttered sentence structure.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Task completion | All three patterns (जब...तब, जबकि, जैसे...वैसे) are present and used accurately. |
| Appropriate connector choice | जबकि is reserved for direct two-situation comparison rather than used as a general contrast word. |
| Clause control | Each sentence stays limited to two clauses, with a clear comma pause between them. |
| Aspectual accuracy | Past habitual and past progressive forms are used correctly inside background जब clauses. |
| Comprehensibility and pronunciation | Intelligible spoken delivery with clear phrase grouping and pausing; accurate Devanagari spelling and punctuation in writing. |
This task evaluates control of temporal, contrastive, and manner clauses for clear explanation and comparison. Prioritize accurate connector choice and clause clarity over sentence length or complexity.
