अगर, चाहे, और संभावना

Volume III, Chapter 13: Conditions and Possibilities · Speak and Write Hindi: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss conditions and their likely consequences using अगर...तो across present, future, and modal contexts.
  2. Express possibility and uncertainty using हो सकता है, शायद, and संभव है.
  3. Express concession and flexibility using चाहे...फिर भी.
  4. Give conditional advice that is softened and audience-appropriate.
  5. Recognize formal यदि and basic hypothetical meaning in reading and listening.
  6. Write a contingency plan or piece of conditional advice using at least two conditions.

Communication Scenario

With the orientation talk itself only a week away, Meera Ji's group meets for a thirteenth session to plan for things that might not go as expected — bad weather, a small turnout, or a guest who cannot make it. Priya points out that simply describing the neighborhood will not be enough if it rains on the day of the event; they need language for "if this happens, then we will do that," for weighing what is likely against what is merely possible, and for staying flexible without sounding uncertain or unprepared.

  1. Notice how the group builds a plan around अगर...तो rather than simply hoping nothing goes wrong.
  2. Notice how हो सकता है and शायद let a speaker signal a different degree of certainty.
  3. Notice how चाहे...फिर भी lets the group commit to the event happening regardless of one particular obstacle.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 13 continues Unit III, जटिल वाक्य और स्वतंत्र अभिव्यक्ति. Chapter 12 taught you to connect two clauses by time (जब...तब), by contrast (जबकि), and by manner (जैसे...वैसे), always with a comma pause and a matching second-clause form. This chapter uses that same two-clause structure for a new communicative job: stating a condition and its consequence. Chapter 14 will then move from condition to reporting what someone said, asked, or wrote.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners can already build a clear two-clause sentence with a comma pause and a matching connector, from Chapter 11's relative-correlative work and Chapter 12's temporal and contrastive clauses.

What This Chapter Does

This chapter applies the same two-clause logic to अगर...तो for condition and consequence, adds हो सकता है, शायद, and संभव है for degrees of possibility, and introduces चाहे...फिर भी for concession. It stays within practical planning and advice; it does not introduce reported speech or full hypothetical/subjunctive analysis.

Looking Forward

Chapter 14, कहा, पूछा, और बताया, will build on this chapter's clause-linking control to report what someone said, asked, or wrote.

शब्दावली — Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's productive vocabulary supports discussing conditions, weighing possibilities, and making flexible plans. Learn each item inside the sentence frame shown, not as an isolated word.

हो सकता है (कि)—it's possible (that)
शायद—perhaps, maybe
संभव है (कि)—it is possible (that)
मान लीजिए—suppose, let's assume
ऐसी स्थिति में—in such a situation

13.3 Advice and Contingency Expressions

HindiMeaningNote
बेहतर होगा किit would be better ifsoftened recommendation frame
क्या होगा अगरwhat will happen ifuseful question frame for planning
दूसरी सूरत मेंin the alternative casesignals a backup plan
फ़िलहाल के लिएfor now, for the time beingmarks a temporary decision
Receptive Vocabulary Note

Forms such as काश ("if only"), अगर ऐसा होता तो ("if that had been the case"), and formal यदि...तो constructions in policy or instruction texts appear in this chapter's reading passage for recognition only. Hypothetical-past meaning of this kind remains receptive; you are not expected to produce it independently yet.

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

Schwa deletion in condition and possibility vocabulary

Practice reading these forms aloud, paying attention to schwa deletion: संभव (SAM-bhav, not sam-bha-va), स्थिति (STHI-ti), and परिणाम (pa-ri-NAAM). Compare संभावना and संभव है aloud so that the shared root does not tempt you into over-pronouncing the final vowel of either word.

Phrase grouping in conditional sentences

An अगर...तो sentence has two natural phrase groups, just like the जब...तब sentences of Chapter 12. Pause briefly at the comma: अगर बारिश हुई, || तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। For चाहे...फिर भी, keep a level tone across both halves — this pattern is about staying committed regardless of the obstacle, not about surprise or drama.

Intonation for possibility versus warning

शायद and हो सकता है are typically said with a light, slightly rising tone that signals genuine uncertainty rather than concern. A conditional warning, by contrast, often carries a more level or slightly falling tone on the consequence clause. Before listening, remind yourself to listen for this difference: is the speaker guessing, or cautioning?

Grammar: Conditions and Possibilities

You already know how to build a two-clause sentence with a comma pause and a matching connector from Chapters 11 and 12. This chapter applies that same logic to condition, possibility, and concession.

13.4 अगर...तो — Condition and Consequence

Building Block — अगर...तो
अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे।
If it rains, we will sit inside.

Form: अगर + condition clause + comma + तो + consequence clause. Use: stating what will happen, should happen, or tends to happen under a given condition. Meaning: "if X, then Y."

Note: अगर...तो works across present habitual, future, and modal consequence clauses: अगर लोग कम आएँ, तो हम कमरा बदल सकते हैं। ("If fewer people come, we can change the room.") यदि is a more formal, often written equivalent of अगर; you should recognize it in formal texts, but अगर remains your productive default.

13.5 हो सकता है, शायद, and संभव है — Degrees of Possibility

Building Block — Possibility
हो सकता है कि कुछ लोग देर से आएँ। शायद बारिश भी हो। संभव है कि हमें योजना बदलनी पड़े।
It's possible that some people will arrive late. Maybe it will rain too. It's possible that we'll have to change the plan.

Form: हो सकता है (कि) + clause; शायद + clause (no कि needed); संभव है (कि) + clause. Use: signaling that something is uncertain rather than settled. Meaning: all three convey "maybe" or "it's possible," but शायद is the most conversational, while हो सकता है and संभव है sound slightly more considered or written.

Note: Do not treat these three as identical in every context. शायद can open a sentence casually; संभव है कि is more common in planning documents, notices, and formal explanation.

13.6 चाहे...फिर भी — Concession

Building Block — चाहे...फिर भी
चाहे बारिश हो या धूप, फिर भी हम कार्यक्रम रखेंगे।
Whether it rains or shines, we will still hold the program.

Form: चाहे + clause (often with या presenting two alternatives) + comma + फिर भी + main clause. Use: committing to an outcome regardless of a stated obstacle or alternative. Meaning: "no matter whether X, Y will still happen."

Note: चाहे...फिर भी is used here in a controlled, formulaic-leaning pattern. Do not extend it into full concessive subordination with multiple embedded clauses at this stage.

13.7 Advice and Recommendation Within a Condition

Building Block — Conditional Advice
अगर मौसम ख़राब रहा, तो बेहतर होगा कि हम कार्यक्रम अंदर रखें।
If the weather stays bad, it would be better if we hold the program inside.

Combine अगर...तो with the softened recommendation frame बेहतर होगा कि... (recycled from Chapter 7) to give conditional advice that does not sound like a blunt command.

13.8 Hypothetical Past — Receptive Only

Forms such as काश and अगर ऐसा होता तो... describe situations contrary to what actually happened. These remain primarily receptive at the B2 level of this volume; you should recognize their meaning in reading and listening, but full productive control of hypothetical-past constructions is not a target of this chapter.

13.9 Keeping Conditional Sentences Clear

As in Chapters 11 and 12, keep each sentence to two clauses at this stage. Do not chain an अगर clause, a possibility expression, and a चाहे...फिर भी clause together in one sentence. Use separate sentences, and let ऐसी स्थिति में or दूसरी सूरत में connect them at the paragraph level.

Do not treat हो सकता है as a simple future tense. It expresses uncertainty about whether something will happen, not a confident prediction.

Model Dialogue

Setting: At the group's thirteenth meeting, Meera Ji, Priya, Aditya, and Kabir plan for possible problems on the day of the orientation talk.

प्रिया हमें एक योजना बनानी चाहिए कि अगर मौसम ख़राब रहा, तो हम क्या करेंगे। अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। We should make a plan for what we'll do if the weather is bad. If it rains, we'll sit inside.
कबीर हो सकता है कि कम्युनिटी हॉल पहले से बुक हो। संभव है कि हमें कोई और जगह ढूँढनी पड़े। It's possible the community hall is already booked. It's possible we'll have to find some other place.
आदित्य शायद स्कूल का हॉल खाली मिल जाए। मान लीजिए वह भी उपलब्ध नहीं है — फिर हमारे पास क्या विकल्प है? Maybe the school hall will be available. Suppose that's not available either — then what option do we have?
मीरा जी ऐसी स्थिति में, हम कार्यक्रम एक हफ़्ते के लिए टाल सकते हैं। लेकिन चाहे मौसम ख़राब हो या हॉल न मिले, फिर भी हम कोशिश करेंगे कि कार्यक्रम इसी हफ़्ते हो। In such a situation, we can postpone the program by a week. But whether the weather is bad or the hall isn't available, we'll still try to make sure the program happens this same week.
प्रिया अच्छा सोचा। और अगर कुछ लोग देर से आएँ, तो हमें दस मिनट इंतज़ार करना चाहिए। इतना लचीलापन तो ज़रूरी है। Good thinking. And if some people arrive late, we should wait ten minutes. That much flexibility is necessary.
कबीर और अगर बहुत कम लोग आएँ, तो क्या हम फिर भी शुरू करेंगे? क्या होगा अगर सिर्फ़ पाँच लोग आएँ? And if very few people come, will we still start? What will happen if only five people come?
मीरा जी फ़िलहाल के लिए मान लेते हैं कि जितने भी लोग आएँ, हम कार्यक्रम शुरू करेंगे। दूसरी सूरत में, हम बाद में एक और सत्र रख सकते हैं। For now, let's assume that however many people come, we'll start the program. In the alternative case, we can hold another session later.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. अगर बारिश हुई, तो समूह क्या करेगा? (If it rains, what will the group do?)
  2. मीरा जी ने चाहे...फिर भी का इस्तेमाल किस बारे में किया? (What did Meera Ji use chahe...phir bhi about?)
  3. अगर बहुत कम लोग आएँ, तो समूह का क्या फ़ैसला है? (If very few people come, what is the group's decision?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace, pausing briefly at each comma. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first, then at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
अगर बारिश हुई, तो कार्यक्रम कहाँ होगा? (If it rains, where will the program be held?)______
अगर कुछ लोग आख़िरी समय पर न आ पाएँ, तो समूह क्या करेगा? (If some people can't come at the last minute, what will the group do?)______
अगर कार्यक्रम टालना पड़े, तो समूह क्या करेगा? (If the program has to be postponed, what will the group do?)______

Note: The phrase आख़िरी समय पर ("at the last minute") is glossed here for comprehension; it is not a chapter grammar target.

Reading Practice

Read the adapted contingency notice below, drafted by Meera Ji's group for the neighborhood bulletin board, and then answer the questions.

सूचना — Notice: नए निवासियों के लिए कार्यक्रम की योजना — Plans for the New-Residents Program
If the weather is favorable, the program will be held in the field at ten in the morning. If it rains, the program will be held inside the community hall. It's possible that some people will get notice of a time change at the last moment, so please check the notice board regularly. It's possible that parking space will be limited; in such a situation, please consider coming on foot or using a shared vehicle. Whatever the weather, the program will still be held on the same day — only the location may change. Suppose you need some special assistance — in that alternative case, please contact the organizers in advance, so that proper arrangements can be made.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. Identify one example each of अगर/यदि...तो, a possibility expression, and चाहे...फिर भी in the text.
  2. What should residents do if parking space is limited?
  3. What stays the same even if the weather is bad, according to the notice?
  4. What should someone do if they need special assistance?

Writing Workshop

Write a short contingency plan or piece of conditional advice, हमारी योजना और विकल्प ("Our Plan and Alternatives"), about a real or invented event, trip, or activity you are organizing.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task: Write a connected 120-160 word text in standard Devanagari that includes:

  1. At least two अगर...तो sentences, each stating a different condition and its consequence.
  2. At least one possibility expression (हो सकता है, शायद, or संभव है).
  3. One चाहे...फिर भी sentence showing your commitment to the plan despite one obstacle.
  4. At least one softened piece of advice using बेहतर होगा कि....

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • Each sentence stays limited to two clauses; no अगर, possibility, and चाहे...फिर भी clause is chained together in one sentence.
  • A comma separates the condition clause from the consequence clause.
  • Possibility expressions are not used as if they were confident predictions.
  • Advice is softened rather than given as a blunt command.
  • Gender, number, agreement, and postpositions are applied correctly throughout.
  • Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and dandas are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: शर्त और परिणाम

With a partner, take turns stating a condition and having your partner complete the consequence using तो. Then switch: your partner states the condition and you complete it.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: योजना और विकल्प पर चर्चा

Discuss a real or invented plan with your partner. Present at least two conditions with consequences, one possibility, and one concession using चाहे...फिर भी. Your partner should ask what will happen in one alternative case.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing a contingency plan for an event using each of the three patterns (अगर...तो, a possibility expression, and चाहे...फिर भी) at least once. Listen back and check that each conditional sentence stays clear and limited to two clauses.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Softening conditional advice

As the chapter scope notes, advice based on a condition should often be softened rather than delivered as a flat instruction. Compare a bare command like अगर बारिश हुई, अंदर आ जाओ with the softer अगर बारिश हुई, तो बेहतर होगा कि हम अंदर बैठें. The second version invites agreement rather than simply issuing an order, which is often more appropriate among peers, neighbors, or in public-facing writing.

Culture in Context — Formal यदि in written instructions

Notices, official instructions, and policy texts often use यदि...तो where everyday conversation would use अगर...तो. This is a register choice, not a difference in meaning. Strong warnings in public notices also tend to use more formal vocabulary and a more measured tone than a warning given informally between friends.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Treating हो सकता है as a confident future

Error: Using हो सकता है to state something the speaker is actually certain about.

Correction: Reserve हो सकता है, शायद, and संभव है for genuine uncertainty: हो सकता है कि बारिश हो। ("It's possible it will rain.") For a confident plan, use the simple future instead: कल बारिश होगी।

Common Mistake — Dropping the comma pause in अगर...तो sentences

Error: अगर बारिश हुई तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। (no pause, sentence runs together)

Correction: अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। — the comma marks the boundary between the condition and the consequence and should also be reflected as a brief pause in speech.

Common Mistake — Chaining condition, possibility, and concession into one sentence

Error: अगर बारिश हुई, तो हो सकता है कि हम अंदर बैठें, चाहे हॉल छोटा हो, फिर भी हम कोशिश करेंगे। (three connectors chained together, unclear)

Correction: Split into separate sentences: अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम अंदर बैठेंगे। हो सकता है कि हॉल छोटा हो, लेकिन चाहे हॉल छोटा हो, फिर भी हम कोशिश करेंगे। — clarity matters more than combining every idea into one sentence.

Chapter Review

भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)

1. Return to the Model Dialogue and Reading passage and answer in English:

  1. Give one example each of अगर...तो and a possibility expression from the Model Dialogue.
  2. Explain, in your own words, why Meera Ji uses चाहे...फिर भी when talking about the weather and the hall.

भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)

1. Fill in the blank with अगर, तो, शायद, or फिर भी as appropriate:

  1. ______ मौसम ख़राब रहा, तो हम कार्यक्रम अंदर रखेंगे।
  2. अगर बहुत लोग आएँ, ______ हमें ज़्यादा कुर्सियों की ज़रूरत होगी।
  3. ______ कुछ लोग देर से आएँ; इसलिए हम दस मिनट इंतज़ार करेंगे।
  4. चाहे मौसम कैसा भी हो, ______ हम कोशिश करेंगे कि कार्यक्रम इसी हफ़्ते हो।

2. Combine each pair of sentences into one sentence using अगर...तो: हॉल उपलब्ध नहीं है। हम स्कूल के हॉल में कार्यक्रम रखेंगे।

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. Return to the contingency notice and identify the sentence that uses यदि...तो. What condition and consequence does it describe?

भाग D — लेखन (Writing)

1. Write your complete "Our Plan and Alternatives" text, following all requirements from the Writing Workshop above.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. Complete the communicative speaking task described in the Speaking Practice section above.

Cumulative Review

This chapter recycles Chapter 12's two-clause sentence-linking skills and comma-pause phrasing, Volume II's conditionals and advice/obligation language, and problem-solution discourse from Chapter 7, while introducing अगर...तो across new contexts, हो सकता है/शायद/संभव है for possibility, and चाहे...फिर भी for concession. It prepares learners for Chapter 14's work on reporting speech, which builds on the same clause-linking foundation.

Practical Performance Task

हमारी योजना और विकल्प — Our Plan and Alternatives

Complete the following connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the contingency passage above and complete the listening table.
  2. Read the contingency notice and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Speak with a partner about a plan with at least two conditions, a possibility, and one concession, and respond to your partner's question about an alternative case.
  4. Write your complete 120-160 word "Our Plan and Alternatives" text, following the Writing Workshop checklist.
  5. Edit your written text for correct comma pauses, appropriate use of possibility expressions, and softened advice.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Task completionAt least two conditions, one possibility expression, and one चाहे...फिर भी sentence are present and used accurately.
Appropriate connector choicePossibility expressions are reserved for genuine uncertainty rather than confident predictions.
Clause controlEach sentence stays limited to two clauses, with a clear comma pause between them.
Softened adviceRecommendations use बेहतर होगा कि... or an equally softened frame rather than a blunt command.
Comprehensibility and pronunciationIntelligible spoken delivery with clear phrase grouping and pausing; accurate Devanagari spelling and punctuation in writing.

This task evaluates control of conditional, possibility, and concessive clauses for practical planning and advice. Prioritize accurate connector choice and clause clarity over sentence length or complexity.
