अंतिम परियोजना: स्वतंत्र हिंदी
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Understand a multi-part spoken and written Hindi source set on a real-world topic.
- Summarize and discuss information from a short source with accurate attribution.
- Give a structured opinion or recommendation supported by evidence and examples.
- Describe relevant people, places, events, and conditions using relative-correlative structures, temporal and contrastive clauses, and conditional or concessive meaning.
- Report what someone said, asked, or wrote using appropriate reported-speech frames.
- Adjust speech and writing for audience, purpose, and register, including formal correspondence.
- Interpret a cultural, idiomatic, or media element in context.
- Produce an integrated oral and written portfolio that demonstrates readiness for CEFR B2 and for Hindi Volume IV.
Communication Scenario
The housing society's lift is finally being repaired. Before work begins, the management committee asks residents to share input at an open meeting, and afterward asks a few residents — including Priya — to help prepare materials for the building's multilingual, multigenerational community: an announcement email, a plain-language summary for elderly residents like Sudha Ji, a short spoken update for the building's WhatsApp voice group, and a two-minute presentation for the meeting itself. Kabir, Aditya, and Sudha Ji all reappear, each needing a different version of essentially the same information. This is the final task of Volume III: using everything learners have built — narration, opinion, explanation, complex sentences, reported speech, formal writing, presentation, cultural interpretation, and mediation — for one coherent real-world purpose.
- Notice how the same underlying information appears in a formal announcement, a spoken summary, and a presentation.
- Notice how speakers report what others said at the meeting.
- Notice how relative clauses, conditions, and cause-result connectors organize longer explanations.
- Notice how each version stays accurate to the source while adjusting register for its audience.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 20 is the closing chapter of Unit IV, औपचारिक, सांस्कृतिक, और मध्यस्थ भाषा, and of Hindi Volume III as a whole. It introduces no new grammar, vocabulary domain, script system, or register system. Instead, it integrates every system activated across Chapters 1-19 into one connected set of real-world tasks.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners bring narration and reflection from Unit I, opinion and evidence from Unit II, complex sentences and reported speech from Unit III, and formal writing, presentation, cultural interpretation, and mediation from Unit IV. Chapter 19 in particular supplies the register-transformation and mediation skills this chapter uses throughout.
What This Chapter Does
This chapter walks through one connected real-world scenario that requires listening, reading, speaking, and writing at B2 level, then asks learners to produce a final portfolio: a source-based summary, a supported opinion or recommendation, a complex description, a reported update, a register-appropriate piece of formal writing, and a short presentation.
Looking Forward
Successful completion of this chapter's portfolio indicates readiness for Hindi Volume IV, which develops these same systems toward C1-level academic, professional, and public communication.
Core Vocabulary Review
This chapter introduces no new productive vocabulary domain. The table below regroups high-value vocabulary from across Volume III that this chapter's tasks require. Use it as a reference, not as a first-exposure list.
20.1 Meeting, Update, and Community Vocabulary (Recycled)
| Hindi | Meaning | First Active In |
|---|---|---|
| बैठक | meeting | Chapter 4 |
| सुझाव | suggestion | Chapter 9 |

| रिपोर्ट के अनुसार / के मुताबिक़ | according to the report | Chapters 8, 19 |
| कहा गया / बताया गया | it was said / it was stated | Chapter 8 |
| सुझाव देना | to give a suggestion, to recommend | Chapter 9 |
| सूचित करना | to inform | Chapter 16 |
| सरल शब्दों में / दूसरे शब्दों में | in simple / other words | Chapter 19 |
20.2 Connectors for Complex, Reported, and Evaluative Discourse (Recycled)
| Hindi | Function | First Active In |
|---|---|---|
| जो...वह / जिस...उस / जहाँ...वहाँ | relative-correlative description | Chapter 11 |
| जब...तब / जबकि / जैसे | time and contrast | Chapter 12 |
| अगर...तो / हो सकता है कि / चाहे...फिर भी | condition, possibility, concession | Chapter 13 |

| के कारण / की वजह से / इसलिए | cause and result | Chapters 4, 7 |
| मेरे विचार में / मेरे हिसाब से / मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि | opinion and recommendation | Chapters 6, 9 |
No item in these tables is new. If a form here feels unfamiliar, return to the chapter listed in the right-hand column before attempting this chapter's portfolio task.
Pronunciation and Listening Focus
This chapter's tasks move across four registers in one project: a formal email, a plain-language explanation, a casual voice message, and a presentation. Before recording or speaking, decide which register you are in and let your pace, pausing, and word choice shift accordingly, the way Priya did across the email and the plain-language explanation in Chapter 19.
Extended speech, such as a two-minute presentation, tends to expose uneven schwa deletion and phrase grouping more than short sentences do. Read your presentation notes aloud slowly at least once, marking natural breath groups, before practicing at full speed.
A reported statement (उन्होंने कहा कि...), a conditional recommendation (अगर...तो बेहतर होगा कि...), and a direct recommendation (मैं सलाह दूँगा/दूँगी कि...) each carry a slightly different intonation contour. Practice moving between them without flattening all three into the same tone.
Integrated Grammar Review
This section introduces no new grammar. It shows how Volume III's major systems combine naturally in one extended, real-world text — the kind of writing this chapter's portfolio requires.
20.3 One Update, Four Registers
Notice that the relative clause जो लगभग एक सप्ताह में पूरी हो जाएगी (Chapter 11), the reporting frame जैसा कि बैठक में बताया गया (Chapters 8, 14), and the register shifts (Chapters 16, 19) all draw on systems already active. This chapter asks learners to combine them purposefully rather than learn them for the first time.
20.4 Condition, Cause, and Recommendation Together
A realistic recommendation often needs a condition, a cause, and a recommendation frame in the same passage: अगर मरम्मत में देरी होती है, तो इसका कारण शायद ज़रूरी पुर्ज़ों की कमी होगी; इसलिए मेरी सलाह है कि सोसाइटी पहले से एक वैकल्पिक योजना बना ले। ("If the repair is delayed, the reason will probably be a shortage of necessary parts; therefore, my advice is that the society make an alternative plan in advance.") This combines the conditional pattern from Chapter 13, the cause-result connector from Chapter 7, and the recommendation frame from Chapter 9.
20.5 Reporting Multiple Speakers at a Meeting
When summarizing a meeting, keep each speaker's contribution clearly attributed: एक निवासी ने कहा कि मरम्मत जल्दी होनी चाहिए, जबकि प्रबंधन समिति ने बताया कि पुर्ज़े मंगवाने में समय लगेगा। ("One resident said that the repair should happen quickly, whereas the management committee stated that it would take time to order the parts.") This reuses reported speech (Chapter 14) together with the contrastive connector जबकि (Chapter 12).
This chapter does not introduce new clause types, new postpositional functions, new compound verbs, or new register systems. If a task seems to require an untaught structure, simplify the sentence or use an already-active pattern instead of reaching for new grammar.
Model Dialogue
Setting: After the housing society's open meeting about the lift repair, Priya, Kabir, and Aditya compare notes on the way home, and Priya later updates her grandmother, Sudha Ji.
Later, at home:
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- बैठक में निवासी और प्रबंधन समिति की राय में क्या अंतर था? (What was the difference between the resident's and the management committee's views at the meeting?)
- प्रिया ने अपनी नानी को क्या-क्या बताया, और उसने भाषा कैसे बदली? (What did Priya tell her grandmother, and how did she adjust her language?)
- प्रिया ने सोसाइटी को किस तरह का ईमेल भेजने का सुझाव दिया, और क्यों? (What kind of email did Priya suggest the society send, and why?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural presentation pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first for meaning, then again at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| लिफ़्ट की मरम्मत कब शुरू होगी, और इसमें कितना समय लगेगा? (When will the lift repair begin, and how long will it take?) | ______ |
| देरी होने की स्थिति में इसका कारण क्या बताया गया है? (In case of delay, what reason is given?) | ______ |
| किन निवासियों के लिए अस्थायी व्यवस्था पर विचार किया जाएगा? (For which residents will a temporary arrangement be considered?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the formal announcement email below, then answer the questions.
Comprehension questions:
- Identify the three pieces of information also present in the Listening Practice passage above.
- Find one relative clause, one conditional clause, and one reported-decision phrase in the email, and identify which chapter first introduced each pattern.
- How would you rewrite the closing two sentences of this email in plain Hindi for a resident like Sudha Ji?
- What information would you keep, and what would you remove, if you were preparing a 15-second voice message about this email for the building's WhatsApp group?
Writing Workshop
This Writing Workshop is the written half of the Final B2 Portfolio Task described below. Complete all parts in standard Devanagari.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task:
- Write a source-based summary (3-4 sentences) of the Reading Practice email, using at least one reporting frame and correct source attribution.
- Write a supported recommendation (4-5 sentences) about how the society should communicate further updates to residents, using at least one cause-result connector and one recommendation frame.
- Write a complex description (3-4 sentences) of a resident affected by the repair (real or invented), using at least one relative-correlative structure and one conditional or concessive clause.
- Write a short plain-language message (2-3 sentences) explaining the update to a family member, following the register-transformation practice from Chapter 19.
- Write a formal follow-up email (5-6 sentences) to the management committee, asking a clarifying question and making one polite request, using the formal conventions from Chapter 16.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- Each of the five pieces stays within its assigned register and does not drift into another register mid-text.
- The summary attributes information to its source and does not add unstated certainty.
- The recommendation gives at least one clear reason, not just a bare suggestion.
- The complex description uses at least one relative-correlative structure and one conditional or concessive clause accurately.
- The formal email includes an appropriate opening, a clear request, and an appropriate closing.
- Gender, number, agreement, oblique forms, postpositions, and `ने`/`को` patterns are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and punctuation are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: भूमिका बदलो — Change the Role
With a partner, take turns delivering the same piece of information about the lift repair as if speaking to: (1) an elderly neighbor, (2) a building WhatsApp voice group, and (3) the management committee. Your partner should identify which audience you are addressing from your register alone.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: दो मिनट की प्रस्तुति — Two-Minute Presentation
Deliver a two-minute presentation summarizing the lift-repair situation: what was decided, why delays might happen, what is being done for affected residents, and your own recommendation. Use at least one discourse marker from Chapter 17 (सबसे पहले, इसके बाद, अंत में) and invite two follow-up questions from your audience.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record your two-minute presentation on your own. Listen back once for content (did you cover all four points?) and once for delivery (did your pace, pausing, and register match a presentation rather than a casual conversation?).
Culture and Communication
Housing societies, residential associations, and similar community bodies across Hindi-speaking regions and diaspora settings often need to reach residents of very different ages, languages, and levels of formality with the same underlying information. The skills in this chapter — register adjustment, plain-language explanation, and formal correspondence — are ordinary, practical tools for exactly this kind of everyday community life, not specialized professional skills.
Choosing a plainer register for an elderly relative or a more formal register for an institutional email is not simply a grammar rule; it reflects care for the listener's or reader's needs. B2 Hindi communication should be judged not only on accuracy but on whether it serves its audience well.
The public, institutional, and mediating language practiced in this chapter is a bridge to Hindi Volume IV, where similar tasks — reports, presentations, formal correspondence, and cultural interpretation — expand into academic, professional, and public communication at a more demanding, C1-oriented level.
Common Mistakes
Error: Starting a formal email with an appropriately formal opening, then sliding into colloquial phrasing (भइया, contractions, casual particles) by the closing lines.
Correction: Reread the entire piece after drafting and check that every sentence, including the closing, matches the register established at the opening.
Error: Writing मुझे लगता है कि मरम्मत सोमवार से शुरू होगी ("I think the repair will start Monday") when this is a stated fact from the meeting, not a personal guess.
Correction: Reserve मुझे लगता है कि and similar hedges for actual opinions; use बैठक में बताया गया कि or तय हुआ कि for confirmed information.
Error: Cramming a relative clause, a condition, a reported statement, and a cause-result connector into a single overlong sentence that becomes unclear.
Correction: Split the information across two or three clearer sentences, as modeled throughout this chapter, and prioritize clarity over structural density.
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Model Dialogue and Reading passage and answer in English:
- What did the resident and the management committee each say at the meeting, and how are their views reported differently?
- What four audiences or formats does Priya's group need to prepare information for, and how does the register differ across them?
भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Combine each pair of simple sentences into one sentence using a relative-correlative, temporal, conditional, or reported-speech structure of your choice:
- एक निवासी को सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ने में तकलीफ़ होती है। उस निवासी के लिए अस्थायी व्यवस्था की जाएगी।
- पुर्ज़े समय पर नहीं आते। मरम्मत में देरी हो सकती है।
- प्रबंधन समिति ने एक बात कही। मरम्मत सोमवार से शुरू होगी।
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. Return to the Reading Practice email and identify one sentence that would need to change if you were reporting this information a week later, after work had actually begun. Rewrite it accordingly.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Complete the full Writing Workshop task: source-based summary, supported recommendation, complex description, plain-language message, and formal follow-up email.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the two-minute presentation described in the Speaking Practice section and respond to two follow-up questions.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles narration and reflection (Unit I), opinion and evidence (Unit II), relative-correlative structures, temporal/conditional clauses, and reported speech (Unit III), and formal writing, presentation, cultural interpretation, and mediation (Unit IV), combining them into one connected community-communication project.
Final B2 Portfolio Task
अंतिम परियोजना: स्वतंत्र हिंदी — Final Project: Independent Hindi
Complete the following connected tasks in order. Together, they form your Volume III final portfolio.
- Listen to the meeting-summary passage above and complete the listening table.
- Read the formal announcement email and answer the comprehension questions.
- Write the five-part Writing Workshop portfolio: summary, recommendation, complex description, plain-language message, and formal follow-up email.
- Speak by delivering your two-minute presentation and responding to two follow-up questions.
- Reflect in two or three sentences on which register was most difficult for you to control across this project, and why.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Task completion | All five written pieces, the presentation, and the reflection are present and address their assigned audience and purpose. |
| Grammar integration | Relative-correlative structures, temporal/contrastive/conditional clauses, reported speech, and cause-result connectors are used accurately across the portfolio. |
| Register control | Each piece maintains a register appropriate to its stated audience without drifting into another register. |
| Devanagari and mechanics | Spelling, matras, conjuncts, punctuation, word spacing, and digital formatting are correct throughout the written pieces. |
| Spoken performance | The presentation is organized, uses discourse markers appropriately, and responds coherently to follow-up questions. |
| Overall B2 readiness | The portfolio, taken as a whole, demonstrates independent B2 communication across narration, argument, complex sentences, reporting, formal writing, and mediation. |
This task evaluates integrated CEFR B2 performance across listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, Devanagari literacy, register, and mediation, and serves as the capstone assessment for Hindi Volume III.
Answer Key
Model Dialogue — Comprehension
- The resident said the repair should happen quickly; the management committee said ordering parts would take time — these are reported with two different reporting verbs (कहा कि / बताया कि) and joined with the contrastive जबकि.
- Priya's group needs a formal email (for the society), a plain-language message (for Sudha Ji), a casual voice message (for the WhatsApp group), and a presentation (for the meeting), each adjusting address, sentence length, and vocabulary for its audience.
Listening
- The lift repair will begin Monday and take about a week.
- A possible delay would be due to necessary parts not arriving on time.
- A temporary arrangement will be considered for residents who have difficulty climbing stairs.
Reading — Comprehension
- The three shared pieces of information: the start date and duration of the repair, the possible cause of delay, and the plan for residents who have difficulty with stairs.
- Relative clause: जिन निवासियों को सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ने में असुविधा होती है; conditional clause: यदि आवश्यक पुर्ज़े समय पर नहीं पहुँचते, तो...; reported-decision phrase: आज की बैठक में जो निर्णय लिए गए, उनके अनुसार... These correspond to Chapters 11, 13, and 8/14 respectively.
- Model plain-language version: "लिफ़्ट सोमवार से ठीक होना शुरू होगी, एक हफ़्ता लगेगा। अगर पुर्ज़े देर से आए, तो थोड़ा और समय लग सकता है। सीढ़ियों में दिक़्क़त वालों के लिए कुछ इंतज़ाम किया जा रहा है।"
- Model answer: keep the start date, duration, and the stair-difficulty arrangement; remove the formal opening, the source-attribution phrase, and the closing apology, since a 15-second voice message needs only the core facts.
Chapter Review — भाग B
- (a) Model answer: जिस निवासी को सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ने में तकलीफ़ होती है, उसके लिए अस्थायी व्यवस्था की जाएगी। (b) Model answer: अगर पुर्ज़े समय पर नहीं आते, तो मरम्मत में देरी हो सकती है। (c) Model answer: प्रबंधन समिति ने कहा कि मरम्मत सोमवार से शुरू होगी।
Chapter Review — भाग C
Model answer: the sentence "लिफ़्ट की मरम्मत सोमवार, 14 जुलाई से शुरू होगी" would need to change from future to perfective/habitual reporting, e.g. "लिफ़्ट की मरम्मत सोमवार, 14 जुलाई से शुरू हो चुकी है।" ("Lift repair has already begun as of Monday, July 14.")
Looking Ahead
अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now
You can understand and summarize a multi-part Hindi source, support an opinion or recommendation with evidence, describe people and situations using complex sentences, report what others said, adjust your Hindi for audience and register across casual, plain, and formal contexts, and deliver an organized spoken presentation with follow-up discussion. Together, these abilities represent independent CEFR B2 Hindi communication.
