स्वतंत्र से उन्नत हिंदी

Volume IV, Chapter 1: From Independent to Advanced Hindi · Speak and Write Hindi: Professional, Academic, and Cultural Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe your current Hindi abilities, strengths, and remaining challenges with precision.
  2. Explain the difference between B2 independent communication and C1 advanced communication in your own words.
  3. Discuss professional, academic, and community communication goals for the coming volume.
  4. Summarize a past learning or work experience using organized, cohesive Hindi.
  5. Ask and answer diagnostic questions about background, goals, and communication needs.
  6. Use stance and self-assessment expressions such as मेरा मानना है कि and मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर accurately.
  7. Organize a multi-sentence self-description using cohesive connectors such as सबसे पहले, इसके अलावा, and अंत में.
  8. Produce a polished spoken and written Hindi profile suitable for a professional or academic-adjacent setting.

Communication Scenario

Several months after the housing society's lift was finally repaired, Priya has started a part-time position at a small nonprofit organization in Delhi that runs community and literacy programs across several housing societies, including her own. Her supervisor, Ms. Ahuja, asks each new team member to prepare a short self-assessment — spoken and written — describing their language abilities, professional background, and goals, since much of the organization's work happens in Hindi with residents, government offices, and donors. Kabir, now considering a similar volunteer role, and Aditya, who has just started an internship at a Hindi-medium newspaper, are working through the same kind of self-assessment for their own new settings. Sudha Ji, delighted that Priya's Hindi has grown so much since the lift meetings, asks Priya to explain what "advanced Hindi" actually means.

  1. Notice how Priya, Kabir, and Aditya each describe their own Hindi ability differently, depending on their setting.
  2. Notice how a B2 self-description differs from a C1 self-description in precision, organization, and abstraction.
  3. Notice how stance expressions let a speaker distinguish fact, opinion, and self-evaluation.
  4. Notice how cohesive connectors turn a list of separate facts into one organized account.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 1 opens Unit I, पेशेवर संवाद और संस्थागत भाषा, and Hindi Volume IV as a whole. It introduces no major new grammar system. Instead, it reactivates the systems Volume III left at B2 independence — narration, opinion, complex sentences, reported speech, and formal register — and establishes the C1 operating expectations that Chapters 2 through 20 will build toward.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners bring the full range of Volume III systems: connected narration, supported opinion, relative-correlative and conditional structures, reported speech, formal correspondence, presentation, cultural interpretation, and register-sensitive mediation, as practiced in the final project of Chapter 20.

What This Chapter Does

This chapter asks learners to describe their own Hindi ability, background, and goals with new precision, introducing stance expressions and cohesive connectors that organize a self-assessment into one coherent, professional-sounding account rather than a list of separate sentences.

Looking Forward

Chapters 2 through 4 use this same self-presentation foundation to build professional introductions, meeting participation, and problem-solution proposals, moving toward the Unit I assessment in Chapter 5.

शब्दावली — Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary

This chapter's productive vocabulary supports precise self-assessment. Recognize that some items are abstract nouns without a single one-word English equivalent; each is glossed in context below.

Note on This Vocabulary

Most of this chapter's abstract nouns — क्षमता, प्रगति, पृष्ठभूमि — are new productive items, but the grammar that carries them (postpositional frames, relative clauses, reported speech) is entirely recycled from Volume III. Use familiar sentence patterns to carry new vocabulary.

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

Schwa deletion in abstract and formal vocabulary

Words like क्षमता (kṣamtā, not kṣa-ma-tā read letter by letter) and पृष्ठभूमि (pṛṣṭhbhūmi) contain internal schwa deletion patterns that are easy to misread when a word is new and abstract. Read each new noun in this chapter's vocabulary tables aloud slowly before using it in a sentence.

Phrase grouping in longer self-assessment sentences

A sentence such as मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर, मुझे लगता है कि मेरी सबसे बड़ी कमज़ोरी औपचारिक लेखन है has two natural breath groups: one ending after आधार पर, and one carrying the rest of the claim. Practice pausing at the comma rather than running the whole sentence together.

Intonation for stance versus fact

A confirmed fact (मैंने दो साल हिंदी पढ़ी है) and a personal judgment (मुझे लगता है कि मेरी हिंदी अभी भी सीमित है) should sound different. Let the stance-marking phrase carry a slightly softer, more provisional tone than a flat factual statement.

Grammar and Language Systems

This chapter introduces no major new grammar system. It reactivates Volume III's core systems and adds two small, closely related tools: stance expressions for self-assessment, and cohesive connectors for organizing an extended account.

1.4 Reactivation: What You Already Control

Before adding anything new, confirm that the following remain available for immediate use: gender, number, and agreement; oblique forms and postpositions; present habitual, progressive, perfective, and future meaning; ने and object marking with को; common compound verbs; relative-correlative structures (जो...वह, जब...तब); conditional and concessive clauses (अगर...तो, चाहे...फिर भी); reported speech with कि; and formal correspondence conventions.

Language Building Block — Stance Expressions for Self-Assessment
मेरा मानना है कि मेरी सुनने की क्षमता अच्छी है। मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर, बोलचाल की हिंदी पढ़ने से ज़्यादा आसान है। इस चरण में, मेरी प्राथमिकता यह है कि मैं औपचारिक लेखन में सुधार करूँ।
I believe that my listening ability is good. Based on my experience, spoken Hindi is easier than written Hindi. At this stage, my priority is that I improve my formal writing.

Notice that each frame is followed by a कि-clause, exactly like the reported-speech and opinion frames from Volume III (Chapters 6 and 14). The frame changes; the underlying clause structure does not.

1.5 Organizing an Extended Self-Description

A self-assessment becomes organized, professional-sounding Hindi when separate facts are linked by cohesive connectors rather than left as a list: सबसे पहले, मैंने दो साल तक हिंदी की कक्षाएँ लीं। इसके अलावा, मैं घर पर अपनी नानी से हिंदी में बात करती हूँ। दूसरी ओर, मुझे औपचारिक लेखन में अभी भी कठिनाई होती है। अंत में, मेरा लक्ष्य है कि मैं इस साल अपने संस्था के लिए हिंदी में रिपोर्ट लिख सकूँ। ("First, I took Hindi classes for two years. In addition, I speak Hindi with my grandmother at home. On the other hand, I still find formal writing difficult. Finally, my goal is that I be able to write reports in Hindi for my organization this year.")

Boundary Reminder

This chapter does not introduce new clause types, new postpositional functions, new aspect forms, or new honorific systems. If a self-description seems to require an untaught structure, simplify the sentence or reuse an already-active Volume III pattern instead of reaching for new grammar.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Priya meets briefly with her new supervisor, Ms. Ahuja, at the community nonprofit's small Delhi office to discuss her Hindi self-assessment before her first week of work.

आहूजा जी प्रिया, हमारे साथ काम शुरू करने से पहले, ज़रा बताइए — आप अपनी हिंदी क्षमता का आकलन कैसे करती हैं? Priya, before you start working with us, please tell me — how would you assess your Hindi ability?
प्रिया मेरा मानना है कि मेरी बोलने और सुनने की क्षमता काफ़ी अच्छी है। मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर, मैं रोज़मर्रा की बातचीत और यहाँ तक कि जटिल विषयों पर भी बिना किसी बड़ी दिक़्क़त के बात कर सकती हूँ। I believe my speaking and listening ability is quite good. Based on my experience, I can talk about everyday conversations and even complex topics without much major difficulty.
आहूजा जी और लेखन के बारे में क्या कहेंगी? And what would you say about writing?
प्रिया सच कहूँ तो, यही मेरी सबसे बड़ी कमज़ोरी है। मुझे रोज़मर्रा के संदेश लिखने में कोई तकलीफ़ नहीं होती, लेकिन औपचारिक रिपोर्ट या प्रस्ताव लिखना अभी भी चुनौतीपूर्ण लगता है। इसलिए इस चरण में मेरी प्राथमिकता यह है कि मैं संस्थागत लेखन में सुधार करूँ। To be honest, this is my biggest weakness. I have no trouble writing everyday messages, but writing a formal report or proposal still feels challenging. So at this stage, my priority is to improve my institutional writing.
आहूजा जी बहुत बढ़िया, यह तो बिल्कुल स्पष्ट आकलन है। हमारा काम भी काफ़ी हद तक रिपोर्ट लिखने से जुड़ा है, तो हम इस पर मिलकर काम करेंगे। Very good, that's a completely clear assessment. Our work is also connected to report writing to a great extent, so we'll work on this together.

That evening, at home:

सुधा जी बेटा, तुम हमेशा कहती हो कि तुम्हारी हिंदी "उन्नत" होनी चाहिए। इसका मतलब क्या होता है? Dear, you always say your Hindi needs to become "advanced." What does that mean?
प्रिया नानी, सरल शब्दों में कहूँ तो, अब तक मैं रोज़मर्रा की और आम बातचीत में स्वतंत्र रूप से बात कर सकती थी। अब मुझे यही हिंदी दफ़्तर, रिपोर्ट, और संस्थाओं के लिए भी इस्तेमाल करनी है — यानी ज़्यादा सटीक, ज़्यादा संगठित, और ज़्यादा औपचारिक। Grandma, to put it simply, until now I could speak freely in everyday, ordinary conversation. Now I need to use this same Hindi for the office, reports, and institutions too — that is, more precise, more organized, and more formal.
सुधा जी समझ गई। जैसे लिफ़्ट वाले ईमेल में तुमने किया था! I understand. Like what you did in that lift email!
प्रिया बिल्कुल वैसे ही, नानी — बस अब यह मुझे रोज़ करना होगा। Exactly like that, Grandma — except now I'll have to do it every day.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया अपनी बोलने और सुनने की क्षमता का आकलन कैसे करती है? (How does Priya assess her speaking and listening ability?)
  2. प्रिया अपनी सबसे बड़ी कमज़ोरी किसे मानती है, और वह इस चरण में क्या प्राथमिकता तय करती है? (What does Priya consider her biggest weakness, and what priority does she set at this stage?)
  3. प्रिया अपनी नानी को "उन्नत हिंदी" का मतलब कैसे समझाती है? (How does Priya explain the meaning of "advanced Hindi" to her grandmother?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first for meaning, then again at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
आदित्य अपनी सबसे बड़ी मज़बूती किसे मानता है? (What does Aditya consider his biggest strength?)______
आदित्य को किस चीज़ में अभी भी कठिनाई होती है? (What does Aditya still find difficult?)______
इस चरण में आदित्य की प्राथमिकता क्या है, और क्यों? (What is Aditya's priority at this stage, and why?)______

Reading Practice

Read Kabir's short written self-assessment, prepared for a volunteer coordinator role, then answer the questions.

My name is Kabir, and I want to work as a volunteer coordinator in my housing society. I believe my Hindi speaking and listening ability is at an independent level — I can easily take part in everyday conversation, meetings, and general reading. Based on my experience, my greatest strength is that I can easily talk to different people, whether they are young or elderly. On the other hand, I feel that my formal writing is still limited, especially when it comes to reports or official letters. So at this stage, my priority is to learn formal and institutional Hindi, so that I can make a better contribution to my community.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. Identify the four cohesive connectors Kabir uses to organize his self-assessment, and state the function of each.
  2. Find two stance expressions in Kabir's text and identify which one signals a firmer claim and which one signals a more tentative impression.
  3. Compare Kabir's stated strength and weakness with Priya's, from the Model Dialogue. What do they have in common?
  4. Rewrite Kabir's closing sentence in your own words, keeping the same stance expression but changing the stated goal.

Writing Workshop

Complete all parts in standard Devanagari.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task:

  1. Write a self-assessment paragraph (5-6 sentences) describing your own Hindi ability, using at least two stance expressions from this chapter (मेरा मानना है कि, मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर, मुझे लगता है कि).
  2. Organize your paragraph using at least three cohesive connectors (सबसे पहले, इसके अलावा, दूसरी ओर, अंत में).
  3. State one clear strength and one clear weakness, each supported by a brief reason or example.
  4. State a goal for this stage of your Hindi study, using इस चरण में, मेरी प्राथमिकता यह है कि...
  5. Write two or three sentences describing a professional, academic, or community setting where you would like to use your Hindi, following Priya and Kabir's models.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • At least two stance expressions are used accurately and are followed by a correctly formed कि-clause.
  • At least three cohesive connectors are used, and each marks a genuine shift or addition in the account.
  • The stated strength and weakness are each supported by a reason, not left as a bare claim.
  • The goal statement uses the target frame accurately.
  • Gender, number, agreement, oblique forms, postpositions, and `ने`/`को` patterns are applied correctly throughout.
  • Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and punctuation are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: आकलन बताओ — State Your Assessment

With a partner, take turns asking and answering: आप अपनी हिंदी क्षमता का आकलन कैसे करेंगे/करेंगी? Answer using at least one stance expression and one specific example, following Priya's model in the dialogue.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: तीन मिनट का स्व-मूल्यांकन — Three-Minute Self-Assessment

Deliver a three-minute spoken self-assessment describing your Hindi ability, your background, your strengths and weaknesses, and your goal for this stage of study. Organize it with at least three cohesive connectors, and invite one follow-up question from your partner.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record your three-minute self-assessment on your own. Listen back once for content (did you state a strength, a weakness, and a goal, each with support?) and once for organization (did your connectors clearly link one idea to the next?).

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Self-presentation across settings

How someone describes their own abilities shifts depending on setting: a Hindi self-assessment for a nonprofit supervisor, a newspaper internship, or a community volunteer role may each emphasize different strengths. This is not dishonesty; it reflects appropriate audience awareness, a skill this volume develops throughout Unit I.

Culture in Context — Overstatement and understatement

In many Hindi professional and academic-adjacent settings, a confident but measured self-assessment is valued over either false modesty or overstatement. Naming a real weakness alongside a real strength, as Priya and Kabir both do, is generally seen as more credible than claiming complete mastery.

Culture in Context — What "advanced" Hindi means

As Priya explains to Sudha Ji, moving from independent (B2) to advanced (C1) Hindi is not about learning entirely new language — it is about using familiar language with more precision, organization, and formality across professional, academic, and institutional settings. This reframing runs through the whole of Volume IV.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Listing facts without connectors

Error: Writing a self-assessment as a string of unconnected sentences: मेरी हिंदी अच्छी है। मुझे लेखन में कठिनाई होती है। मेरा लक्ष्य सुधार है।

Correction: Link the ideas with cohesive connectors, as modeled throughout this chapter: मेरी हिंदी अच्छी है; दूसरी ओर, मुझे लेखन में कठिनाई होती है; इसलिए, मेरा लक्ष्य सुधार है।

Common Mistake — Overstating ability without support

Error: Writing मेरी हिंदी पूरी तरह उन्नत है ("My Hindi is completely advanced") with no supporting example or reason.

Correction: Support every claim with a brief reason or example: मेरी हिंदी काफ़ी अच्छी है, क्योंकि मैं रोज़ अपने परिवार से हिंदी में बात करता/करती हूँ।

Common Mistake — Confusing a firm belief with a tentative impression

Error: Using मुझे लगता है कि for a well-supported fact, or मेरा मानना है कि for a passing guess.

Correction: Reserve मेरा मानना है कि for a considered, evidence-based belief, and मुझे लगता है कि for a more tentative impression.

Chapter Review

भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)

1. Return to the Model Dialogue and Reading passage and answer in English:

  1. What strength and weakness does Priya identify, and how does she support each with a reason?
  2. How does Priya explain the difference between "independent" and "advanced" Hindi to her grandmother?

भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)

1. Rewrite each pair of simple sentences as one sentence using a stance expression or cohesive connector from this chapter:

  1. मेरी सुनने की क्षमता अच्छी है। यह मेरा अनुभव है।
  2. मुझे बोलचाल की हिंदी समझने में मुश्किल होती है। मुझे रिपोर्ट पढ़ने में भी मुश्किल होती है।
  3. मुझे औपचारिक लेखन सीखना है। यह मेरी प्राथमिकता है।

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. Return to Kabir's self-assessment and identify which sentence would need to change if, six months later, Kabir had already improved his formal writing. Rewrite it accordingly.

भाग D — लेखन (Writing)

1. Complete the full Writing Workshop task: self-assessment paragraph with stance expressions, connectors, strength, weakness, goal, and a target setting.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. Complete the three-minute self-assessment described in the Speaking Practice section and respond to one follow-up question.

Cumulative Review

This chapter recycles narration, opinion, and reported speech (Volume III), formal register and cohesive connectors (Volume III, Chapter 17), and complex sentence combination, while introducing new stance vocabulary and self-assessment frames that will organize professional communication throughout Unit I.

Practical Performance Task

मेरा हिंदी स्व-मूल्यांकन — My Hindi Self-Assessment

Complete the following connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to Aditya's self-assessment passage and complete the listening table.
  2. Read Kabir's written self-assessment and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Write your own self-assessment paragraph, following the Writing Workshop steps.
  4. Speak by delivering your three-minute self-assessment and responding to a follow-up question.
  5. Reflect in two or three sentences on which part of your self-assessment felt most difficult to organize, and why.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Task completionThe written paragraph, the spoken self-assessment, and the reflection are all present and address ability, background, and goals.
Stance and cohesionStance expressions and cohesive connectors are used accurately and appropriately.
SupportThe stated strength, weakness, and goal are each supported by a reason or example.
Devanagari and mechanicsSpelling, matras, conjuncts, punctuation, and word spacing are correct throughout the written work.
Spoken performanceThe self-assessment is organized, paced naturally, and responds coherently to a follow-up question.

This task establishes a baseline for C1-oriented self-presentation that Chapters 2 through 5 will build into full professional introductions, meeting participation, and proposal writing.

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. Priya identifies speaking and listening as strengths, supported by the fact that she can discuss everyday and even complex topics without major difficulty; she identifies formal writing as a weakness, supported by the fact that reports and proposals still feel challenging.
  2. Priya explains that until now she could speak freely in everyday, ordinary conversation (independent/B2 Hindi), and now she needs the same Hindi to be more precise, organized, and formal for office, report, and institutional use (advanced/C1 Hindi).

Listening

  • Aditya's greatest strength is his reading and comprehension ability, supported by the fact that he has always read Hindi newspapers.
  • He still finds fast, natural spoken Hindi difficult to understand, especially when people speak very quickly.
  • His priority is to better understand fast, natural conversation such as interviews, because this is necessary for his new work.

Reading — Comprehension

  1. Kabir uses no numbered connector list explicitly, but his account is organized by मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर (grounding a claim), दूसरी ओर (contrast), and इसलिए (result), moving from strength to weakness to goal.
  2. मेरा मानना है कि signals Kabir's firmer, considered claim about his speaking level; मुझे लगता है कि signals his more tentative impression about his limited formal writing.
  3. Both Priya and Kabir identify interpersonal, everyday spoken Hindi as a strength and formal or institutional writing as a weakness — a common pattern for B2 learners moving into C1 professional contexts.
  4. Model answer: इसलिए इस चरण में मेरी प्राथमिकता यह है कि मैं समाचार लेखन की शैली सीखूँ, ताकि मैं अपने समाचार-पत्र के काम में बेहतर योगदान दे सकूँ। ("So at this stage, my priority is to learn news-writing style, so that I can make a better contribution to my newspaper work.")

Chapter Review — भाग B

  1. (a) Model answer: मेरे अनुभव के आधार पर, मेरी सुनने की क्षमता अच्छी है। (b) Model answer: मुझे बोलचाल की हिंदी समझने में मुश्किल होती है, और इसके अलावा मुझे रिपोर्ट पढ़ने में भी मुश्किल होती है। (c) Model answer: इस चरण में, मेरी प्राथमिकता यह है कि मैं औपचारिक लेखन सीखूँ।

Chapter Review — भाग C

Model answer: the sentence "दूसरी ओर, मुझे लगता है कि मेरा औपचारिक लेखन अभी भी सीमित है" would need to change to reflect improvement, e.g. "दूसरी ओर, मुझे लगता है कि मेरा औपचारिक लेखन अब पहले से काफ़ी बेहतर हो गया है।" ("On the other hand, I feel that my formal writing has now become considerably better than before.")

Looking Ahead

अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now

You can describe your own Hindi ability with precision, distinguish independent from advanced communication, state a supported strength, weakness, and goal, and organize an extended self-description using stance expressions and cohesive connectors. Together, these abilities establish the professional self-presentation foundation for the rest of Unit I.

आगे की ओर: अध्याय 2 — पेशेवर परिचय और नेटवर्किंग — Ahead: Chapter 2 — Professional Introductions and Networking

Chapter 2 builds directly on this chapter's self-assessment work, moving from describing your own ability to introducing yourself in professional, academic, and institutional settings — describing responsibilities, expertise, and projects, and writing a short professional bio and networking message.
