पेशेवर परिचय और नेटवर्किंग
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Introduce yourself in professional, academic-adjacent, and institutional contexts with appropriate precision.
- Describe your responsibilities, expertise, projects, and organizational role using nominalized role vocabulary.
- Ask tactful, well-formed questions about another person's work or field.
- Open and close a professional conversation appropriately in speech and in writing.
- Adjust formality across an email, a meeting, an interview, and an informal professional conversation.
- Use professional relationship frames such as के रूप में, के तहत, and से संबंधित accurately.
- Write a short professional bio and a register-appropriate networking follow-up message.
Communication Scenario
A week into her new role, Priya attends an inter-organization networking evening that Ms. Ahuja's nonprofit co-hosts with two other Delhi-based community organizations. She meets several new people whose work touches her own — a program officer from a partner organization, a university researcher studying community literacy programs, and, unexpectedly, an old family friend who now works at a government education office. Meanwhile, Aditya's newspaper internship sends him to cover the same event, giving him a professional reason to introduce himself to strangers rather than simply attend socially. Kabir, still deciding whether to take the volunteer coordinator role, tags along as a guest and watches how differently people describe their work depending on who is asking.
- Notice how each speaker's self-introduction changes depending on the setting: reception conversation, formal introduction, or interview.
- Notice how nominalized role vocabulary (भूमिका, ज़िम्मेदारी, क्षेत्र) lets a speaker describe work precisely without a long explanation.
- Notice how `आप` remains the safe default, even between people close in age, until the relationship is clearly established as informal.
- Notice how a written follow-up message after the event differs in structure and tone from the spoken conversation itself.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 2 continues Unit I, पेशेवर संवाद और संस्थागत भाषा. It builds directly on Chapter 1's self-assessment foundation, moving from describing one's own Hindi ability to introducing oneself professionally to other people, in person and in writing.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners bring Chapter 1's stance expressions and cohesive connectors, along with the full range of reactivated Volume III systems: agreement, postpositions, aspect, `ने`, compound verbs, relative-correlative structures, reported speech, and formal correspondence.
What This Chapter Does
This chapter introduces nominalized role description, professional relationship frames such as के रूप में and के तहत, and the pragmatics of adjusting formality across email, meeting, interview, and informal conversation.
Looking Forward
Chapter 3 uses this professional-introduction foundation to move into structured meetings, where learners state agenda items, agree and disagree, and summarize decisions.
Core Vocabulary
This chapter's productive vocabulary supports describing roles, organizations, and professional relationships precisely.
2.1 Roles, Departments, and Responsibilities
| Hindi | Meaning | Example Use |
|---|---|---|
| भूमिका | role | मेरी भूमिका कार्यक्रम समन्वयन की है। |
| कार्य | work, task, function | मेरा मुख्य कार्य रिपोर्ट तैयार करना है। |
| ज़िम्मेदारी | responsibility | मेरी ज़िम्मेदारी में बजट और समय-सारणी दोनों आते हैं। |
| विभाग | department | मैं शिक्षा विभाग में काम करती हूँ। |
| क्षेत्र | field, area (of work/expertise) | मेरा क्षेत्र सामुदायिक साक्षरता है। |
| परियोजना | project | यह परियोजना तीन महीने से चल रही है। |
| संगठन | organization | हमारा संगठन तीन राज्यों में काम करता है। |
| पद | position, post | मैंने यह पद पिछले महीने संभाला। |
2.2 Networking and Professional Relationships
| Hindi | Meaning | Example Use |
|---|---|---|
2.3 Formal Opening and Closing Phrases (Formulaic)
| Hindi | Function | First Active In |
|---|---|---|
| आपसे मिलकर खुशी हुई | closing a first meeting warmly | New in Volume IV |
| मैं वर्तमान में... | opening a role description | New in Volume IV |
| मेरी भूमिका... | describing one's role concisely | New in Volume IV |
| हमारा उद्देश्य... | describing an organization's purpose | New in Volume IV |
| आगे संपर्क में रहेंगे | closing with an offer to stay in touch | New in Volume IV |
| क्या मैं आपसे कुछ पूछ सकता/सकती हूँ? | politely asking a follow-up question | Volume III |
Nouns such as भूमिका, ज़िम्मेदारी, and क्षेत्र let a speaker summarize complex work in a short, precise phrase instead of a long descriptive sentence. This compression is one mark of C1-level professional Hindi.
Pronunciation and Listening Focus
Institutional vocabulary such as संगठन (saṅgaṭhan) and विशेषज्ञता (viśeṣagyatā) contains internal schwa deletion that beginners to this vocabulary often misread. Say each new noun slowly before placing it in a sentence, and notice that the final ता in abstract nouns is always pronounced, never deleted.
A first introduction should be delivered a little more slowly and clearly than casual conversation, since the listener has no prior context. Practice saying मेरा नाम... है, और मैं... में काम करता/करती हूँ at a measured, welcoming pace rather than rushing through it.
In a networking conversation, the key information is usually compressed into a few phrases: who the person is, what organization or field they represent, and what they propose to do next (आगे संपर्क में रहेंगे, मैं आपको ईमेल भेजूँगा/भेजूँगी). Train your ear to catch these compressed phrases rather than every word.
Grammar and Language Systems
This chapter introduces nominalized role description and a small set of professional relationship frames. Both use recycled Volume III postpositional and clause structures with new C1-level vocabulary and precision.
2.4 Nominalized Role Descriptions
Rather than describing work with a long verbal sentence, C1 Hindi often compresses a role into a noun phrase: मेरी भूमिका कार्यक्रम समन्वयन की है ("My role is program coordination") is more precise and professional-sounding than a long paraphrase. Build these noun phrases from familiar verbs using the pattern verb-stem + -न (infinitive) followed by की/का/के agreement with the head noun:
2.5 Professional Relationship Frames
Five postpositional frames organize most professional self-description in this chapter:
| Frame | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| के रूप में | in the capacity/role of | मैं यहाँ एक स्वयंसेवक के रूप में काम करती हूँ। |
| के तहत | under (a program, project, or department) | यह परियोजना शिक्षा विभाग के तहत चलती है। |
| के साथ | with, in partnership with | हम एक स्थानीय स्कूल के साथ काम करते हैं। |
| के लिए | for, on behalf of | मैं यह रिपोर्ट संस्था के लिए तैयार कर रही हूँ। |
| से संबंधित | related to | मेरा काम मुख्य रूप से साक्षरता से संबंधित है। |
Notice that के रूप में marks a capacity or role a person occupies, while के तहत marks an institutional or programmatic umbrella. These are easy to confuse for English speakers, since English "as" and "under" do not map predictably onto Hindi postpositions.
This chapter does not introduce new aspect forms, new honorific systems, or new clause types. Nominalization and the five relationship frames above are the only new productive systems; everything else in this chapter recycles Volume III grammar.
Model Dialogue
Setting: The networking evening. Priya is introduced to Dr. Malhotra, a university researcher, by a mutual colleague.
Later the same evening, Kabir and Aditya talk more informally near the refreshment table:
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- प्रिया अपनी भूमिका और ज़िम्मेदारी का वर्णन कैसे करती है? (How does Priya describe her role and responsibility?)
- डॉ. मल्होत्रा का प्रस्ताव क्या है, और प्रिया उसका जवाब कैसे देती है? (What is Dr. Malhotra's proposal, and how does Priya respond?)
- आदित्य और कबीर की बातचीत में भाषा किस तरह बदल जाती है, और क्यों? (How does the language change in Aditya and Kabir's conversation, and why?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first for meaning, then again at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| रोहन की भूमिका क्या है, और वे किस संगठन में काम करते हैं? (What is Rohan's role, and what organization does he work at?) | ______ |
| रोहन की ज़िम्मेदारी में मुख्य रूप से क्या शामिल है? (What is mainly included in Rohan's responsibility?) | ______ |
| कौन-सी परियोजना किसी सरकारी विभाग के तहत चलती है? (Which project runs under a government department?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the short professional bio that Priya's colleague Neha prepared for the organization's newsletter, then answer the questions.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- Identify Neha's role and the three areas her responsibilities cover.
- Find one use of के रूप में and one use of से संबंधित in the text, and explain what each connects.
- Compare Neha's professional background with Priya's, from Chapter 1. What similarities do you notice in how each moved into their current role?
- Rewrite the closing quotation as reported speech, beginning with नेहा कहती हैं कि...
Writing Workshop
Complete all parts in standard Devanagari.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task:
- Write a short professional bio (4-6 sentences) describing your current or intended role, using at least one nominalized role description (मेरी भूमिका...है) and at least two relationship frames from this chapter (के रूप में, के तहत, के साथ, के लिए, से संबंधित).
- State your area of expertise or interest, using मेरी विशेषज्ञता / मेरी रुचि...में है.
- Write a short networking follow-up email (3-4 sentences) to someone you met for the first time, opening formally, referring to what you discussed, and proposing a next step.
- Rewrite one sentence from your bio in a more informal, spoken register, and briefly explain in English what changed.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- At least one nominalized role description is used accurately.
- At least two relationship frames are used, each connecting the correct two elements.
- The follow-up email opens and closes with register-appropriate formulas.
- The informal rewrite shows a genuine, explainable register shift, not just a shorter sentence.
- Gender, number, agreement, oblique forms, postpositions, and `ने`/`को` patterns are applied correctly throughout.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and punctuation are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: अपना परिचय दीजिए — Introduce Yourself
With a partner, take turns giving a 30-second professional introduction using at least one nominalized role description and one relationship frame, then ask your partner one tactful question about their work.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: नेटवर्किंग की शाम — Networking Evening
Role-play a short networking conversation with two or three partners, moving between people as at a real event. Practice opening a conversation, describing your role, asking about someone else's work, and closing with a next step (आगे संपर्क में रहेंगे).
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record three different versions of your self-introduction: one for a formal interview, one for a networking event, and one for an informal conversation with a friend in the same field. Listen back and identify exactly what changed in each version.
Culture and Communication
In many Hindi professional settings, address forms are shaped by hierarchy, age, and institutional role as much as by familiarity. A junior colleague may use जी and `आप` with a senior colleague of similar age, while using a more informal register with a peer at the same level.
As Aditya notes to Kabir, `आप` remains the safe productive default in a first professional meeting, even between people close in age, unless the relationship clearly supports a different form. Moving to `तुम` typically happens gradually and by mutual signal, not by one person's unilateral decision.
Hindi-English code-switching is common in many urban professional contexts and is not inherently careless or unprofessional. However, this chapter's tasks ask learners to produce precise Hindi role descriptions, since the skill of expressing a role in full Hindi is itself a C1 target.
Common Mistakes
Error: यह परियोजना समन्वयक के तहत चलती है (using के तहt to mean "in the role of," modeled on English "under a coordinator").
Correction: यह परियोजना एक समन्वयक के रूप में मेरे नेतृत्व में चलती है or, more naturally, यह परियोजना शिक्षा विभाग के तहत चलती है. Reserve के तहत for an institutional or programmatic umbrella, not a person's role.
Error: Only ever saying मैं हर दिन कार्यक्रम की योजना बनाती हूँ और स्वयंसेवकों को प्रशिक्षित करती हूँ और... as a long, unbroken list.
Correction: Compress the role first, then elaborate: मेरी भूमिका कार्यक्रम समन्वयन की है। इसमें योजना बनाना और स्वयंसेवकों को प्रशिक्षित करना, दोनों शामिल हैं।
Error: Introducing oneself to a stranger at a formal event with the same casual phrasing used with a close friend.
Correction: Use मैं वर्तमान में...में काम करता/करती हूँ and `आप` in a first professional meeting; reserve casual phrasing for established relationships, as Aditya explains to Kabir.
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Model Dialogue and Reading passage and answer in English:
- What does Dr. Malhotra propose to Priya, and how does Priya respond?
- How does the register of Aditya's speech differ between the networking conversation and his conversation with Kabir, and why?
भाग B — व्याकरण (Grammar)
1. Choose the correct relationship frame (के रूप में, के तहत, से संबंधित) for each sentence:
- मैं इस संस्था में एक शोधकर्ता ______ काम करता हूँ।
- यह कार्यक्रम राज्य सरकार ______ चलता है।
- उनका काम मुख्य रूप से स्वास्थ्य ______ है।
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. Rewrite Neha's bio in the third person plural honorific, if it is not already, or identify which verb forms already show honorific agreement and explain why.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Complete the full Writing Workshop task: professional bio, expertise statement, follow-up email, and informal rewrite.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the Networking Evening role-play or its solo alternative, producing three distinct registers of self-introduction.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles formal introductions, `आप` and honorific agreement, and formal email conventions from earlier volumes, while introducing nominalized role description and professional relationship frames that Chapters 3 and 4 will build on for meetings and proposals.
Practical Performance Task
मेरा पेशेवर परिचय — My Professional Introduction
Complete the following connected tasks in order.
- Listen to Rohan's self-introduction passage and complete the listening table.
- Read Neha's professional bio and answer the comprehension questions.
- Write your own professional bio and networking follow-up email, following the Writing Workshop steps.
- Speak by completing the Networking Evening role-play or its solo alternative.
- Reflect in two or three sentences on which register — formal, networking, or informal — felt most natural to produce, and why.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Task completion | The written bio, follow-up email, spoken introduction, and reflection are all present and address role, expertise, and relationship. |
| Nominalization and frames | Nominalized role description and relationship frames are used accurately and appropriately. |
| Register control | Formality is adjusted appropriately across the written and spoken tasks. |
| Devanagari and mechanics | Spelling, matras, conjuncts, punctuation, and word spacing are correct throughout the written work. |
| Spoken performance | Introductions are clear, paced naturally, and appropriately adjusted for each setting. |
This task establishes the professional self-presentation skills that Chapters 3 through 5 will build into meeting participation, proposal writing, and the Unit I assessment.
Answer Key
Model Dialogue — Comprehension
- Dr. Malhotra proposes that Priya might share her program's data for research purposes; Priya responds positively, agreeing it is a good idea and offering to email her that week.
- Aditya speaks formally and carefully with Priya (a first professional introduction while covering the event for the newspaper), but speaks casually and directly with Kabir, since they are established friends; he explains that `आप` and formal role-based language stay safest at a first meeting.
Listening
- Rohan's role is project manager at an education-focused NGO.
- His responsibility mainly includes budget management and collaboration with local schools.
- One large project runs under the state government's education department, while two smaller projects are entirely the organization's own.
Reading — Comprehension
- Neha's role is communications officer; her responsibilities cover social media, the newsletter, and contact with donors.
- के रूप में connects Neha to her role as communications officer (and earlier, as a journalist); से संबंधित connects her work to the organization's education projects.
- Both Neha and Priya moved into their current roles from related but different backgrounds (journalism and general community work, respectively), and both describe their work as connected to a broader field of interest rather than a narrow job description.
- Model answer: नेहा कहती हैं कि उनकी सबसे बड़ी रुचि यह देखने में है कि उनके कार्यक्रम असल में लोगों की ज़िंदगी कैसे बदलते हैं।
Chapter Review — भाग B
- (a) के रूप में (b) के तहत (c) से संबंधित
Chapter Review — भाग C
Model answer: the verbs काम कर रही हैं and कहती हैं already show honorific plural agreement, consistent with respectful third-person reference to a colleague named in a professional bio.
