सारांश, टिप्पणी, और प्रतिक्रिया
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Summarize a long Hindi text accurately without copying its original wording.
- Paraphrase key points using different sentence structures from the source.
- Distinguish summary, commentary, and personal response as three separate tasks.
- Agree, disagree, or partially agree with a text's argument in respectful, qualified Hindi.
- Evaluate a text's strengths and limitations without dismissing it.
- Write a short analytical response that clearly separates the author's claim from your own reaction.
Communication Scenario
Priya's structural summary of the rural-training-centers article impressed Ms. Ahuja, who now asks for a second, shorter document: a summary-response memo that a program director can read in five minutes before the next funding meeting. This time, Ms. Ahuja wants more than structure — she wants Priya's professional judgment. Does the article's argument hold up? Where is it convincing, and where might it be incomplete? Priya realizes she must now do two things at once: represent the article fairly, in her own words, and add a reaction that is useful without sounding either falsely agreeable or needlessly critical.
- Notice how Priya keeps her summary of the article separate from her own evaluation, even though both appear in the same short memo.
- Notice that her paraphrase reorganizes the article's sentences rather than lightly editing them.
- Notice how she qualifies her agreement — she does not simply say the article is right or wrong.
- Notice that she supports her response with something specific from the text, not a general impression.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 7 continues Unit II, अकादमिक पढ़ना, विश्लेषण, और लेखन, using the same article type introduced in Chapter 6 but shifting from pure structure toward summary, paraphrase, and evaluated response.
Coming Into This Chapter
Learners bring structural reading vocabulary, the five reference postpositional frames, and the recognize-then-restate skill from Chapter 6, along with the professional register established in Unit I.
What This Chapter Does
This chapter separates three tasks that learners often blur together — summarizing, commenting on style or approach, and reacting personally — and gives each its own vocabulary and sentence frames, with particular attention to paraphrase that does not mirror the source.
Looking Forward
Chapter 8 applies the same evaluative caution to numerical data and trends. Chapter 9 builds a full source-based argument using concession and rebuttal. The stance and hedging language introduced here becomes essential in both.
Core Vocabulary
7.1 Summary, Commentary, and Response
| Hindi | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| सारांश | summary | a condensed, faithful restatement of content |
| व्याख्या | paraphrase, explanation | restating meaning in different words |
| टिप्पणी | commentary | observation about style, method, or approach |
| प्रतिक्रिया | response, reaction | the learner's own considered reaction |
| सहमति | agreement | often with इस बात से सहमत होना |
| असहमति | disagreement | often softened with hedging language |
| सीमा | limitation, limit | used for a text's weakness, not a personal attack |
| मज़बूती | strength | paired with सीमा in balanced evaluation |
| निहितार्थ | implication | nominalized; what a claim suggests beyond itself |
| मूल्यांकन | evaluation | the general act of judging strengths and limitations |
7.2 Summary and Response Phrases
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| संक्षेप में | in brief |
| लेखक का कहना है कि | the author says that |
| दूसरे शब्दों में | in other words |
| इसका मतलब यह है कि | this means that |
| मैं इस बात से आंशिक रूप से सहमत हूँ | I partially agree with this |
| इस तर्क की एक सीमा यह है कि | one limitation of this argument is that |
| मेरी प्रतिक्रिया यह है कि | my response is that |
| यह तर्क कितना ठोस है, यह कहना मुश्किल है | it is hard to say how solid this argument is |
7.3 Receptive Vocabulary
You will meet these words in commentary and review-style prose. Recognize them in context; broad productive use is not required yet.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| एकपक्षीय | one-sided |
| संतुलित | balanced |
| विश्वसनीयता | reliability, credibility |
| पूर्वाग्रह | bias, prejudice |
| आलोचना | criticism, critique |
| सराहना | appreciation, praise |
सारांश condenses an entire text into its main points; व्याख्या restates a specific sentence or passage in different words at similar length. A good response memo usually contains one short summary and several small paraphrases, not one long paraphrase of everything.
Pronunciation and Listening Focus
Words such as मूल्यांकन (mūl-yāṅ-kan), विश्वसनीयता (vish-vas-nī-ya-tā), and निहितार्थ (ni-hi-tārth) combine several morphemes, and schwa deletion applies at each internal boundary, not only at the end of the word. Break these words into their parts before reading them aloud in a sentence, as in Chapter 6.
Hedged agreement such as मैं इस बात से आंशिक रूप से सहमत हूँ should not fall flatly at the end like a simple statement. A slight rise-then-fall around आंशिक रूप से signals that a qualification, not a flat yes or no, is coming — and prepares the listener for the explanation that follows.
In the listening passage below, identify the moment where the speaker shifts from restating the article's content to offering a personal reaction. Listen once for this shift, then a second time to note the specific hedging or evaluative words that mark it.
Grammar and Language Systems
7.4 Paraphrase Frames
Three frames let you restate a claim in your own words while signaling clearly that you are paraphrasing, not quoting:
| Frame | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
7.5 Stance and Hedging Language
Formal Hindi response writing rarely states full agreement or disagreement. Instead, it calibrates a position with hedging expressions:
| Hindi | Degree |
|---|---|
| पूरी तरह सहमत हूँ | full agreement |
| काफ़ी हद तक सहमत हूँ | strong but not complete agreement |
| आंशिक रूप से सहमत हूँ | partial agreement |
| संभवतः सही है, लेकिन... | probably correct, with a qualification |
| पूरी तरह सहमत नहीं हूँ | disagreement, softened |
7.6 Separating Quotation, Report, Paraphrase, and Commentary
These four ways of engaging with a source look similar but serve different purposes. Compare how the same idea appears in each:
Reported claim (attributed, close to original): लेखक कहते हैं कि केंद्रों की संख्या बढ़ाना अकेले पर्याप्त नहीं है।
Paraphrase (own words, same meaning): दूसरे शब्दों में, सिर्फ़ ज़्यादा केंद्र खोलने से समस्या हल नहीं होगी।
Commentary (about the argument's method): लेखक अपनी बात सीधे कहने के बजाय आँकड़ों के ज़रिए दिखाते हैं, जो तर्क को अधिक विश्वसनीय बनाता है।
Personal response (learner's own reaction): मुझे यह तर्क काफ़ी हद तक सही लगता है, हालाँकि मुझे लगता है कि लेखक ने लागत का मुद्दा नहीं उठाया।
A response memo normally moves through all four in order: report or paraphrase the claim, comment on how it is made, then give a personal, supported reaction.
This chapter does not require full source-based argumentation with multiple sources and formal rebuttal — that begins in Chapter 9. Here, the goal is a single-source summary-response that keeps content, commentary, and personal reaction visibly separate.
Model Dialogue
Setting: Priya is drafting her summary-response memo and checks her draft with Deepak before sending it to Ms. Ahuja.
समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:
- प्रिया लेख के तर्क से कितनी सहमत हैं? (How much does Priya agree with the article's argument?)
- प्रिया कौन-सी सीमा बताती हैं? (What limitation does Priya point out?)
- प्रिया ने अपने पहले ड्राफ्ट में क्या समस्या पाई और उसे कैसे ठीक किया? (What problem did Priya find in her first draft, and how did she fix it?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first for meaning, then again at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| वक्ता लेख के मुख्य तर्क से कितना सहमत है? (How much does the speaker agree with the article's main argument?) | ______ |
| वक्ता कौन-सी सीमा बताता है? (What limitation does the speaker point out?) | ______ |
| कौन-सा वाक्यांश दिखाता है कि वक्ता सारांश से प्रतिक्रिया की ओर बढ़ रहा है? (Which phrase shows the speaker moving from summary toward response?) | ______ |
Reading Practice
Read the commentary piece below, written by a second education researcher responding to the same training-centers article from Chapter 6, then answer the questions.
Comprehension questions:
- In one Hindi sentence, state how much the commentary's author agrees with the original article.
- Identify the two limitations the commentary raises, and explain each in your own words.
- Find one sentence in the commentary that is clearly personal response rather than summary or commentary on method, and explain how you identified it.
- Is the commentary's overall judgment positive, negative, or mixed? Support your answer from the text.
Writing Workshop
Complete all parts in standard Devanagari.
लेखन कार्य — Writing task:
- Write a two- or three-sentence summary of the training-centers article (Chapter 6) or the commentary above, entirely in your own words, without copying any sentence structure from the source.
- Write one sentence of commentary on how the argument is made — for example, whether it relies on data, direct statement, or example — using the frame लेखक अपनी बात...के ज़रिए दिखाते हैं.
- State your own position using a hedging expression from Section 7.5 (पूरी तरह सहमत हूँ / काफ़ी हद तक सहमत हूँ / आंशिक रूप से सहमत हूँ), followed by a reason.
- Identify one limitation of the argument, using the frame इस तर्क की एक सीमा यह है कि....
- Keep your summary, commentary, and personal response in clearly separate sentences or short paragraphs so a reader could label each part.
संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:
- The summary restates content in different sentence structure from the original, not just different individual words.
- Commentary on method is separated from personal response.
- A hedging expression accurately reflects the degree of agreement, not simply full agreement or full disagreement.
- The stated limitation is a genuine gap in the argument, not a restatement of the argument itself.
- At least one paraphrase frame from Section 7.4 is used correctly.
- Spelling, matras, conjuncts, word spacing, and punctuation are correct throughout.
Speaking Practice
नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: सारांश बनाम प्रतिक्रिया — Summary Versus Response
Read a short paragraph aloud, then state its summary in one sentence and your personal response in a separate sentence, clearly marking the shift with a phrase such as मेरी प्रतिक्रिया यह है कि.
संचार कार्य — Communicative task: सहकर्मी को प्रतिक्रिया — Response for a Colleague
With a partner, take turns playing Priya and Deepak from the Model Dialogue. One partner summarizes an assigned article or the commentary passage above; the other asks whether they agree, and the first partner responds using a hedging expression and states one limitation.
अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative
Record yourself summarizing the commentary passage in two sentences, then giving your own reaction with a hedging expression and one limitation, in under two minutes. Listen back and check that your summary and your response are clearly distinguishable.
Culture and Communication
In much professional and academic-adjacent Hindi writing, disagreement is rarely stated as a flat rejection. Writers more often qualify their agreement, name a specific limitation, and let the reader draw the stronger conclusion. Priya's memo and the sample commentary both model this pattern.
इस तर्क की एक सीमा यह है कि... critiques the argument, not the author. Formal Hindi commentary generally keeps this distinction visible, especially in workplace and institutional writing where the author of a text may be a colleague or a known public figure.
A reader who trusts your summary is more likely to trust your response. Placing an accurate, fair summary before any evaluation — as both the Model Dialogue and the Reading Practice piece do — is a common professional convention, not merely a stylistic preference.
Common Mistakes
Error: Keeping the article's sentence structure almost entirely intact and swapping in one or two synonyms, as Priya's own first draft did.
Correction: Rebuild the sentence from its meaning outward — decide what the sentence says, then construct a new sentence with different structure and word order, as Priya does after Deepak's question.
Error: Writing मैं सहमत हूँ or मैं असहमत हूँ without any qualification or reason.
Correction: Use a graded hedging expression from Section 7.5 and follow it with a specific reason, as Priya does when she says काफ़ी हद तक सहमत हूँ and explains why.
Error: Framing a limitation personally, such as suggesting the author was careless or did not do their job properly.
Correction: Frame the limitation as a property of the argument, using इस तर्क की एक सीमा यह है कि..., as modeled in both the dialogue and the Reading Practice commentary.
Chapter Review
भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)
1. Return to the Reading Practice commentary and answer in English:
- What two limitations does the commentary's author identify in the original article?
- What is the commentary's overall judgment of the original article?
भाग B — शब्दावली और व्याकरण (Vocabulary and Grammar)
1. Choose the correct hedging expression for each sentence and explain your choice:
- आँकड़े बहुत स्पष्ट हैं, इसलिए मैं इस तर्क से ______ सहमत हूँ। (आंशिक रूप से / काफ़ी हद तक)
- लेखक ने लागत के बारे में कुछ नहीं बताया, इसलिए मैं ______ सहमत हूँ, पूरी तरह नहीं। (आंशिक रूप से / पूरी तरह)
भाग C — पठन (Reading)
1. In your own words, paraphrase the commentary's final sentence without copying its wording or structure.
भाग D — लेखन (Writing)
1. Complete the full Writing Workshop task: summary, commentary on method, hedged personal response, and stated limitation.
भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)
1. Complete the Solo Alternative or Communicative Task recording, clearly separating summary from personal response.
Cumulative Review
This chapter recycles the structural reading vocabulary and reference postpositions from Chapter 6, and the evidence-framing and hedging language introduced across Unit I, applying them to summary-response writing. The stance and limitation language here will be extended into full source-based argument in Chapter 9.
Practical Performance Task
सारांश-प्रतिक्रिया ज्ञापन — Summary-Response Memo
Complete the following connected tasks in order.
- Listen to the unemployment-response passage and complete the listening table.
- Read the access-argument commentary and answer the comprehension questions.
- Draft a summary of the Chapter 6 training-centers article in two or three original sentences.
- Speak a short response that moves from summary to commentary to personal reaction, in under two minutes.
- Write a short summary-response memo using the Writing Workshop steps, keeping summary, commentary, and response visibly distinct.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Faithful, original-wording summary | The summary accurately represents the source without copying its sentence structure. |
| Separation of tasks | Summary, commentary on method, and personal response appear as distinguishable parts. |
| Graded stance | Agreement or disagreement is expressed with an accurate hedging degree, not a flat yes or no. |
| Supported limitation | The stated limitation identifies a genuine gap and is framed at the argument, not the author. |
| Paraphrase and stance frames | At least one frame from Section 7.4 and one from Section 7.5 are used accurately. |
| Devanagari and mechanics | Spelling, matras, conjuncts, punctuation, and word spacing are correct throughout. |
Chapter 8 turns to data, trends, and cautious interpretation, extending the hedging language from this chapter to numerical claims.
Answer Key
Model Dialogue — Comprehension
- Priya agrees to a considerable degree (काफ़ी हद तक), not fully or only slightly.
- She points out that the article does not address the cost of building new roads or relocating centers.
- Her first draft stayed too close to the article's original sentence structure; she fixed this by rewriting the sentences with fully different structure rather than only changing a few words.
Listening
- The speaker agrees to a considerable degree (काफ़ी हद तक सही लगता है).
- The speaker notes that the article does not explain how skills-training programs would be funded.
- मेरी प्रतिक्रिया यह है कि... marks the shift from summary toward personal response.
Reading — Comprehension
- The commentary's author largely agrees with the original article, calling its core argument about access "solid and important."
- First, the original study covers only three districts and does not establish how representative they are nationally. Second, the article does not address the cost of improving transportation compared to building new centers.
- Model answer: the sentence "मेरी प्रतिक्रिया यह है कि लेख का मूल तर्क...ठोस और महत्वपूर्ण है, लेकिन..." is personal response, identified by the phrase मेरी प्रतिक्रिया यह है कि and by its focus on what further research is needed, rather than restating or commenting on the original text alone.
- The judgment is mixed: positive toward the core argument, but qualified by two specific limitations regarding sample size and cost.
Chapter Review — भाग B
- (a) काफ़ी हद तक — clear, strong data supports a stronger degree of agreement than "partial." (b) आंशिक रूप से — a missing cost analysis is a real gap, so full agreement would overstate the case.
Looking Ahead
अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now
You can summarize a long Hindi text in your own words, comment on how its argument is built, and add a hedged, supported personal response that names a real limitation without attacking the author. This three-part skill — summary, commentary, response — underlies the more demanding argument writing ahead.
