Volume IV, Chapter 8: Data, Trends, and Explanation · Speak and Write Hindi: Professional, Academic, and Cultural Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe data, survey results, percentages, averages, and trends in clear Hindi.
  2. Compare figures using quantitative expressions such as की तुलना में, से अधिक, and से कम.
  3. Explain a possible cause or implication of a trend using cautious, hedged language.
  4. Distinguish fact, inference, and speculation when interpreting numbers.
  5. Ask clarifying questions about a data set or chart.
  6. Write a short, cautiously worded data commentary.

Communication Scenario

Ms. Ahuja's funding meeting went well, and the program director has now asked for one more page: a short explanation of a new district-level survey comparing attendance at rural training centers before and after a transport pilot. Priya has the numbers, but she knows numbers alone will not convince anyone. She needs to describe what changed, compare it carefully to the earlier three-district data from the article, and say — cautiously — what the numbers might mean, without claiming more certainty than the data actually supports.

  1. Notice how Priya reports each figure precisely before saying anything about what it might mean.
  2. Notice that she compares the new survey to the earlier data using clear comparison expressions.
  3. Notice how she signals uncertainty with hedging language whenever she moves from fact to interpretation.
  4. Notice that she avoids claiming a single cause for a trend that could have several explanations.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 8 continues Unit II, अकादमिक पढ़ना, विश्लेषण, और लेखन, moving from summary and personal response toward the careful description and interpretation of numerical information.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners bring the paraphrase frames, hedging expressions, and summary-versus-response distinction from Chapter 7, along with the structural reading vocabulary and reference postpositions from Chapter 6.

What This Chapter Does

This chapter applies the same evaluative caution learners practiced in Chapter 7 to numbers, teaching quantitative comparison, cautious interpretation, and the distinction among fact, inference, and speculation.

Looking Forward

Chapter 9 uses this chapter's hedging and cause-implication language as one input among several sources in a full source-based argument with concession and rebuttal.

Note on Numbers in Formal Hindi Prose

Formal written Hindi commonly mixes Devanagari numerals and word-form numbers with Hindi-English terms such as सर्वे, डेटा, or परसेंट in casual speech, while आँकड़े and प्रतिशत remain standard in written reports. This chapter uses the more formal written forms as the productive default.

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

Numbers and percentages in formal delivery

When reading a percentage aloud, such as तीस प्रतिशत (30 percent) or पैंसठ प्रतिशत (65 percent), keep the number and प्रतिशत in one phrase group, with a slight rise on the number and a fall on प्रतिशत. Do not pause between the number and the word — a pause there can make the figure sound uncertain, as if you are unsure of it.

Phrase grouping in comparison sentences

Comparison sentences such as पिछले साल की तुलना में इस साल उपस्थिति बीस प्रतिशत अधिक है contain several phrase units. Group पिछले साल की तुलना में as one breath unit before moving to the main clause, rather than reading the whole sentence as a single unbroken string.

Intonation for cautious interpretation

Hedged interpretation such as यह संभव है कि or हो सकता है कि should sound noticeably more tentative than a plain factual statement. Let the pitch stay slightly level or rise gently through the hedge, saving a clear fall for the end of the full sentence, so the listener hears the caution before the claim.

Listening for statistics and trend descriptions

In the listening passage below, listen once for the specific figures mentioned, and a second time for which sentences are factual reporting and which are the speaker's own cautious interpretation.

Grammar and Language Systems

8.4 Quantitative Comparison

Use these expressions to compare figures precisely without inventing false exactness:

ExpressionFunctionExample
की तुलना मेंcompared toपिछले सर्वेक्षण की तुलना में उपस्थिति बढ़ी है।
से अधिकmore thanसाठ प्रतिशत से अधिक अभिभावकों ने केंद्र के पास होने को ज़रूरी बताया।
से कमless thanदस प्रतिशत से कम परिवारों ने परिवहन को समस्या नहीं माना।
लगभग / करीबapproximatelyलगभग आधे उत्तरदाताओं ने यही उत्तर दिया।
के आसपासaround, in the vicinity ofउपस्थिति दर पचास प्रतिशत के आसपास बनी रही।

8.5 Cautious Interpretation

Move from fact to interpretation only with a clear hedging signal. These expressions form a rough scale from cautious observation to speculative possibility:

HindiDegree of certainty
इससे पता चलता है किa fairly direct reading of the data
ऐसा लगता है किa reasonable but not certain reading
हो सकता है किone plausible possibility among others
यह संभव है किan open possibility, clearly not confirmed
शायदa light, conversational-strength hedge

8.6 Cause and Implication Clauses

Connect a trend to a possible explanation without overclaiming a single cause:

ConnectorFunctionExample
क्योंकिbecauseउपस्थिति बढ़ी क्योंकि नई बस सेवा शुरू हुई थी।
इसलिएthereforeपरिवहन आसान हुआ, इसलिए अधिक विद्यार्थी नियमित रूप से आए।
जिससेdue to which, as a result of whichदूरी कम हुई, जिससे उपस्थिति में सुधार आया।
इसके कारणbecause of thisइसके कारण औसत उपस्थिति दर में बदलाव आया हो सकता है।
Language Building Block
आँकड़ों के अनुसार, [figure] [पिछले वर्ष / पहले सर्वेक्षण] की तुलना में [अधिक/कम] है। इससे पता चलता है कि [cautious reading]। इस रुझान का एक संभावित कारण [possible cause] हो सकता है, हालाँकि इससे यह निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाज़ी होगी कि [overclaim to avoid]।
According to the data, [figure] is [higher/lower] compared to [last year / the earlier survey]. This suggests [cautious reading]. One possible cause of this trend may be [possible cause], though it would be premature to conclude that [overclaim to avoid].

8.7 Impersonal Data-Reporting Style

Formal data commentary often reports what a survey or data set shows rather than foregrounding the speaker:

Personal framing: मुझे लगता है कि उपस्थिति बढ़ी है।

Impersonal data-reporting style: आँकड़ों से पता चलता है कि उपस्थिति में वृद्धि हुई है।

Both are correct Hindi; the impersonal form is preferred when the claim rests on the data itself rather than the writer's personal impression.

Boundary Reminder

This chapter does not require statistical methodology, sampling theory, or economic terminology. The goal is clear, cautious description of straightforward figures — counts, percentages, averages, and simple comparisons — not technical data analysis.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Priya reviews the new transport-pilot survey results with Deepak before writing her data commentary.

दीपक नए सर्वेक्षण में क्या मिला? What did the new survey find?
प्रिया आँकड़ों के अनुसार, पिछले साल की तुलना में इस साल उपस्थिति बीस प्रतिशत अधिक है। According to the data, attendance this year is twenty percent higher compared to last year.
दीपक यह तो अच्छी खबर है। इसका कारण क्या हो सकता है? That's good news. What could be the cause of this?
प्रिया यह संभव है कि नई बस सेवा का असर हो, क्योंकि यह उन्हीं तीन ज़िलों में शुरू हुई थी जहाँ उपस्थिति सबसे कम थी। It's possible that the new bus service had an effect, because it started in the same three districts where attendance was lowest.
दीपक तो तुम कह सकती हो कि बस सेवा ने उपस्थिति बढ़ाई? So can you say that the bus service increased attendance?
प्रिया इतनी जल्दी नहीं। इससे यह निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाज़ी होगी कि यह अकेला कारण है — उसी समय स्कूल में नई शिक्षिका भी आई थीं, और यह भी एक कारक हो सकता है। Not that quickly. It would be premature to conclude that this is the only cause — a new teacher also joined the school at the same time, and that could also be a factor.
दीपक समझदारी की बात है। तो तुम रिपोर्ट में क्या लिखोगी? That's sensible. So what will you write in the report?
प्रिया मैं लिखूँगी कि उपस्थिति में स्पष्ट वृद्धि हुई है, और इसके पीछे परिवहन में सुधार एक संभावित कारक है, लेकिन अकेला कारण नहीं कहा जा सकता। I'll write that there has been a clear increase in attendance, and that improved transport is one possible contributing factor behind it, but it cannot be called the sole cause.
दीपक यह आँकड़ों के साथ न्याय करने वाला तरीका है। That's a way of doing justice to the data.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. इस साल उपस्थिति में कितने प्रतिशत की वृद्धि हुई है? (By what percentage has attendance increased this year?)
  2. प्रिया एक ही कारण बताने से क्यों बचती हैं? (Why does Priya avoid stating a single cause?)
  3. दूसरा संभावित कारक क्या है? (What is the second possible factor?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first for meaning, then again at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
इस साल औसत उपस्थिति दर लगभग कितनी थी? (What was the approximate average attendance rate this year?)______
वक्ता किस कारण से सावधान रहता है कि पूरा श्रेय परिवहन को न दे? (Why is the speaker careful not to give full credit to transport?)______
कौन-सा वाक्यांश दिखाता है कि वक्ता अनुमान लगा रहा है, तथ्य नहीं बता रहा? (Which phrase shows the speaker is speculating rather than stating fact?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short infographic-style data note below, prepared for the same funding meeting Priya is working on, then answer the questions.

Data Note: "Impact of the Transport Pilot Project." Data from the transport pilot project run in three districts is now available. Before the pilot began, the average attendance rate in these three districts was about fifty-five percent. Six months after the pilot, this rate rose to about seventy-five percent — a twenty percent increase. Alongside this, in a small survey of parents, more than sixty percent said that distance was no longer as big a problem as before. Fewer than ten percent of parents said transport is still a major obstacle. This data suggests that the improvement in transport has had a positive effect on attendance. However, two new teachers were also appointed during this same period, so it would be premature to conclude that the increase should be fully credited to transport. It is possible that both transport and teacher appointments together brought about this change. The next survey should try to measure both factors separately.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. State the attendance rate before and after the pilot, and calculate the percentage-point increase in your own words.
  2. What two factors does the note say might explain the increase in attendance?
  3. Find one sentence that clearly signals caution rather than certainty, and identify the hedging expression it uses.
  4. What does the note recommend for the next survey, and why?

Writing Workshop

Complete all parts in standard Devanagari.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task:

  1. State the key figure from the Reading Practice data note (or a data set assigned by your instructor) in one sentence, using आँकड़ों के अनुसार.
  2. Write one comparison sentence using की तुलना में, से अधिक, or से कम.
  3. Offer a cautious interpretation of the trend using a hedging expression from Section 8.5 (इससे पता चलता है कि / ऐसा लगता है कि / यह संभव है कि).
  4. Name at least one alternative factor that could also explain the trend, so your commentary does not overclaim a single cause.
  5. Close with a caution sentence using इससे यह निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाज़ी होगी कि....

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • Every figure stated is precise and matches the source data, not invented or rounded without saying so.
  • At least one quantitative comparison expression is used correctly.
  • Interpretation is clearly separated from fact and marked with a hedging expression.
  • At least one alternative factor is acknowledged rather than a single cause being overclaimed.
  • The commentary avoids specialized statistical or economic terminology.
  • Spelling, matras, conjuncts, numerals, and punctuation are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: आँकड़े बताइए — State the Figures

Look at a simple chart or the Reading Practice data note and state three figures aloud, each in a complete sentence using आँकड़ों के अनुसार or a comparison expression from Section 8.4.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: वित्त-पोषण बैठक — The Funding Meeting

With a partner, take turns playing Priya and Deepak from the Model Dialogue. One partner presents the transport-pilot figures; the other asks what might explain the trend, and the first partner responds with a cautious interpretation and at least one alternative factor.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself presenting the Reading Practice data note in under two minutes: state the key figures, offer one cautious interpretation, and name one alternative factor. Listen back and check that your hedging language is clearly audible.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Caution as a professional norm

In Hindi professional and institutional writing, as in many other professional traditions, overstating what a small or limited data set proves can damage credibility. Careful writers routinely name alternative factors and avoid single-cause claims, as both the Model Dialogue and the Reading Practice note do.

Culture in Context — Hindi and English in data contexts

Media, institutional, and academic-adjacent Hindi frequently mixes Hindi and English data vocabulary — a report might use डेटा alongside आँकड़े, or सर्वे alongside सर्वेक्षण. This is a normal feature of contemporary usage, not a sign of incorrect Hindi, though this chapter's productive model favors the more formal Hindi terms for written commentary.

Culture in Context — Numbers and trust

Numerical claims carry social weight in public and institutional communication. Presenting figures precisely, and marking interpretation as interpretation, helps a Hindi-speaking audience trust both the writer and the data itself.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Stating interpretation as if it were fact

Error: Writing बस सेवा ने उपस्थिति बढ़ाई as a flat, unhedged claim of causation.

Correction: Mark the claim as an interpretation with a hedging expression, as Priya does with यह संभव है कि नई बस सेवा का असर हो.

Common Mistake — Claiming a single cause for a trend

Error: Crediting one factor entirely for a change when other plausible factors exist, as Deepak's first suggestion does before Priya corrects it.

Correction: Name at least one alternative factor and use इससे यह निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाज़ी होगी कि... to signal that more than one explanation remains possible.

Common Mistake — Vague or missing figures

Error: Describing a trend only in general terms, such as उपस्थिति काफ़ी बढ़ी है, without stating the actual figures.

Correction: State the specific figures first, as in आँकड़ों के अनुसार, उपस्थिति दर पचपन प्रतिशत से बढ़कर पचहत्तर प्रतिशत हो गई, and only then move to interpretation.

Chapter Review

भाग A — समझ (Comprehension)

1. Return to the Reading Practice data note and answer in English:

  1. What was the attendance rate before and after the transport pilot?
  2. Why does the note avoid crediting the increase entirely to transport?

भाग B — शब्दावली और व्याकरण (Vocabulary and Grammar)

1. Choose the correct comparison expression for each sentence and explain your choice:

  1. इस साल उपस्थिति पिछले साल ______ अधिक है। (की तुलना में / से)
  2. ______ आधे परिवारों ने यही उत्तर दिया। (लगभग / से अधिक)

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. In your own words, explain what the data note recommends measuring in the next survey, and why that recommendation makes sense.

भाग D — लेखन (Writing)

1. Complete the full Writing Workshop task: figure, comparison, cautious interpretation, alternative factor, and caution sentence.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. Complete the Solo Alternative or Communicative Task recording, clearly separating figures from interpretation.

Cumulative Review

This chapter recycles the hedging language and stance vocabulary from Chapter 7 and the reference postpositions from Chapter 6, applying them to numerical claims. The caution-versus-overclaim distinction developed here becomes part of the concession and rebuttal work in Chapter 9.

Practical Performance Task

आँकड़ा टिप्पणी — Data Commentary

Complete the following connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the attendance-survey passage and complete the listening table.
  2. Read the transport-pilot data note and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Choose a simple data set — the pilot data note or one assigned by your instructor.
  4. Speak a short presentation stating the key figures, one cautious interpretation, and one alternative factor, in under two minutes.
  5. Write a short data commentary using the Writing Workshop steps, keeping fact and interpretation visibly distinct.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Accurate figuresNumbers, percentages, and comparisons match the source data precisely.
Quantitative comparisonAt least one comparison expression from Section 8.4 is used correctly.
Fact versus interpretationInterpretation is clearly marked as interpretation, not stated as fact.
Avoided overclaimingAt least one alternative factor is acknowledged rather than a single cause being asserted.
Caution languageA caution expression such as इससे यह निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाज़ी होगी कि is used appropriately.
Devanagari and mechanicsNumerals, spelling, matras, conjuncts, and punctuation are correct throughout.

Chapter 9 uses multiple short sources together, building a full source-based argument with concession and rebuttal.

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. Attendance has increased by twenty percent this year compared to last year.
  2. Priya avoids stating a single cause because a new teacher also joined the school at the same time as the bus service began, so more than one factor could explain the change.
  3. The arrival of a new teacher at the school is the second possible factor.

Listening

  • The average attendance rate this year was around seventy-five percent.
  • The speaker is careful because new teachers were also appointed in the same period, so transport cannot be given full credit alone.
  • संभवतः दोनों कारकों ने मिलकर यह बदलाव लाया हो shows the speaker is speculating rather than stating fact.

Reading — Comprehension

  1. Attendance rose from about fifty-five percent before the pilot to about seventy-five percent after it, a twenty percentage-point increase.
  2. The note mentions improved transport and the appointment of two new teachers as possible explanatory factors.
  3. Model answer: "यह संभव है कि परिवहन और शिक्षक-नियुक्ति, दोनों ने मिलकर यह बदलाव लाया हो" signals caution, using the hedging expression यह संभव है कि.
  4. The note recommends measuring the two factors separately in the next survey, because the current data cannot distinguish how much each factor contributed on its own.

Chapter Review — भाग B

  1. (a) की तुलना में — this expression correctly introduces the point of comparison. (b) लगभग — an approximate figure calls for an approximation marker, not a comparison expression.

Looking Ahead

अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now

You can describe data and trends precisely, compare figures using clear quantitative expressions, and interpret a trend cautiously without overclaiming a single cause. This care in separating fact from interpretation prepares you for building a fuller argument from multiple sources.

आगे की ओर: अध्याय 9 — स्रोत, प्रमाण, और तर्कपूर्ण लेखन — Ahead: Chapter 9 — Sources, Evidence, and Argument Writing

Chapter 9 brings together information from multiple short sources, teaching learners to build a structured argument with evidence, concession, and rebuttal, extending this chapter's cautious interpretation into full source-based argumentation.
