Volume IV, Chapter 9: Sources, Evidence, and Argument Writing · Speak and Write Hindi: Professional, Academic, and Cultural Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use information from two or three short sources to build a single argument in Hindi.
  2. Distinguish claim, evidence, example, and interpretation when constructing an argument.
  3. State a clear position using expressions such as मेरी स्थिति यह है कि.
  4. Acknowledge a counterargument and respond to it using concession and rebuttal language.
  5. Frame evidence responsibly with expressions such as के अनुसार and के आधार पर.
  6. Write and orally defend a short source-based position essay.

Communication Scenario

Priya's data commentary convinced the program director that the transport pilot is worth discussing further, but now the board wants something stronger for the annual report: a short written argument for continuing and expanding the transport pilot next year, supported by more than just one data note. Priya now has three short sources in front of her — her own data note from last chapter, a two-line quote from a parent-survey summary, and a short paragraph from a neighboring district's education office cautioning that a similar transport pilot there did not improve attendance. She must build one coherent argument that uses all three sources honestly, including the one that complicates her case.

  1. Notice how Priya states her position clearly before presenting any evidence.
  2. Notice that she attributes each piece of evidence to its specific source rather than blending them together.
  3. Notice how she brings in the neighboring district's contrary finding as a counterargument rather than ignoring it.
  4. Notice that her rebuttal explains why her case still holds, without dismissing the counterevidence unfairly.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 9 completes Unit II, अकादमिक पढ़ना, विश्लेषण, और लेखन, moving from the description and cautious interpretation of a single data set toward a structured argument built from multiple sources.

Coming Into This Chapter

Learners bring the quantitative comparison expressions, hedging scale, and cause-implication clauses from Chapter 8, along with the summary, paraphrase, and stance vocabulary from Chapter 7.

What This Chapter Does

This chapter combines evidence framing, concession, and rebuttal into a single structured argument, requiring learners to hold a clear position while honestly addressing a source that complicates it.

Looking Forward

Chapter 10 reviews and integrates the reading, summarizing, data interpretation, and argument-building skills from Chapters 6-9 into one assessed analytical task.

9.3 Receptive Vocabulary

You will meet these words when evaluating sources or discussing public debate. Recognize them in context; broad productive use is not required yet.

HindiMeaning
पूर्वाग्रहbias
रूपरेखाframing, outline
कार्यप्रणालीmethodology
सार्वजनिक बहसpublic debate
Note on Naming Sources

When more than one source is in play, name each one specifically — आँकड़ा नोट के अनुसार, अभिभावकों के सर्वेक्षण के अनुसार, पड़ोसी ज़िले की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार — rather than writing a vague एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार for everything. This chapter's productive model keeps source attribution precise throughout.

Pronunciation and Listening Focus

Claim-evidence phrase grouping

When stating a claim followed by evidence, such as मेरी स्थिति यह है कि परिवहन पायलट को जारी रखना चाहिए, क्योंकि आँकड़ों के अनुसार उपस्थिति बढ़ी है, group the claim as one phrase unit with a slight fall at चाहिए, then begin the evidence clause as a fresh phrase unit rather than running the two together.

Intonation for concession and rebuttal

हालाँकि at the start of a concession clause should carry a slightly rising, open pitch, signaling that a qualification is coming. The rebuttal that follows, often introduced by फिर भी, should return to a firmer falling pitch, so the listener hears the argument settle back onto the speaker's position.

Schwa deletion in abstract argument vocabulary

Words such as विश्वसनीयता and प्रति-तर्क carry several syllables where the inherent vowel is not pronounced. Practice reading them aloud slowly, then at a natural pace, before using them in spoken argument.

Listening for claim, evidence, and counterargument

In the listening passage below, listen once for the speaker's overall position, and a second time for the point where a counterargument is introduced and how the speaker responds to it.

Grammar and Language Systems

9.4 Evidence Framing

Attribute each piece of evidence to its specific source before drawing a conclusion from it:

ExpressionFunctionExample

9.5 Concession and Rebuttal

A strong argument acknowledges a genuine counterargument before responding to it — it does not pretend the counterargument does not exist:

ConnectorFunctionExample
Language Building Block
मेरी स्थिति यह है कि [position]। [स्रोत 1] के अनुसार, [evidence 1]। इसके समर्थन में, [स्रोत 2] से पता चलता है कि [evidence 2]। हालाँकि, [स्रोत 3] यह दर्शाता है कि [counterargument]। फिर भी, [rebuttal], इसलिए मेरी स्थिति यह है कि [restated position]।
My position is that [position]. According to [Source 1], [evidence 1]. In support of this, [Source 2] shows that [evidence 2]. However, [Source 3] demonstrates that [counterargument]. Even so, [rebuttal], so my position remains that [restated position].

9.6 Distinguishing Claim, Evidence, Example, and Interpretation

A claim needs support; evidence supports a claim; an example makes evidence concrete; interpretation explains what the evidence might mean. Keep the four distinct in writing so a reader can evaluate each one separately.

Boundary Reminder

This chapter does not require footnote systems, formal citation styles, or research-methods vocabulary. Sources are named in ordinary Hindi prose — आँकड़ा नोट के अनुसार, not a formal bibliographic reference.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Priya talks with Deepak while planning her source-based argument for the annual report.

दीपक तुम्हारे पास अब तीन स्रोत हैं। इतना सब एक साथ कैसे लिखोगी? You have three sources now. How will you write all of this together?
प्रिया मेरी स्थिति यह है कि परिवहन पायलट को अगले साल भी जारी रखना चाहिए और बढ़ाना चाहिए। My position is that the transport pilot should be continued and expanded next year.
दीपक इसके समर्थन में तुम्हारे पास क्या है? What do you have in support of this?
प्रिया आँकड़ा नोट के अनुसार, उपस्थिति में बीस प्रतिशत की वृद्धि हुई। इसके अलावा, अभिभावकों के सर्वेक्षण के आधार पर, साठ प्रतिशत से अधिक ने कहा कि दूरी अब समस्या नहीं है। According to the data note, attendance increased by twenty percent. Also, based on the parent survey, more than sixty percent said distance is no longer a problem.
दीपक लेकिन पड़ोसी ज़िले की रिपोर्ट तो कुछ और कहती है, है ना? But the neighboring district's report says something different, doesn't it?
प्रिया हाँ, हालाँकि पड़ोसी ज़िले में ऐसा ही पायलट सफल नहीं रहा — वहाँ उपस्थिति में कोई खास बदलाव नहीं आया। Yes, however a similar pilot in the neighboring district was not successful — attendance there didn't change much.
दीपक तो क्या यह तुम्हारे तर्क को कमज़ोर नहीं करता? So doesn't this weaken your argument?
प्रिया फिर भी, दोनों जगहों की परिस्थितियाँ एक जैसी नहीं थीं। पड़ोसी ज़िले में स्कूल पहले से ही पास थे, जबकि हमारे यहाँ दूरी मुख्य बाधा थी। इसलिए मेरी स्थिति अब भी यह है कि हमारे संदर्भ में यह पायलट कारगर रहा है। Even so, the circumstances in both places were not the same. In the neighboring district, schools were already close by, whereas in our case distance was the main obstacle. So my position still is that in our context, this pilot has been effective.
दीपक यह एक ईमानदार और मज़बूत तर्क है — तुमने विपरीत सबूत को छुपाया नहीं, बल्कि उसका जवाब दिया। That's an honest and strong argument — you didn't hide the contrary evidence, but responded to it.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. प्रिया की स्थिति क्या है? (What is Priya's position?)
  2. पड़ोसी ज़िले की रिपोर्ट क्या दिखाती है? (What does the neighboring district's report show?)
  3. प्रिया इस विपरीत सबूत का जवाब कैसे देती है? (How does Priya respond to this contrary evidence?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Hindi speaker to read the passage below aloud at a natural pace. If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use: read it slowly first for meaning, then again at a natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Hindi speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
वक्ता की मुख्य स्थिति क्या है? (What is the speaker's main position?)______
कौन-सा स्रोत वक्ता के तर्क के विपरीत जाता है? (Which source goes against the speaker's argument?)______
वक्ता इस विपरीत स्रोत का जवाब कैसे देता है? (How does the speaker respond to this contrary source?)______

Reading Practice

Read the short note from the neighboring district's education office below — the source that complicates Priya's argument — then answer the questions.

पड़ोसी ज़िले की टिप्पणी — Note from the Neighboring District's Education Office

Note from the Neighboring District's Education Office. Last year, a transport pilot project was also run in our district, connecting three village schools to a new bus service. According to data collected six months later, there was no notable change in the attendance rate at these schools — it remained roughly the same as before the pilot. Conversations with parents revealed that distance was never the main obstacle here; most families had already reported reaching school on foot or by bicycle within half an hour. Instead, the main reasons given for irregular attendance were household work and seasonal farm work. From this it can be concluded that improved transport does not increase attendance in every context. Before adopting any new project, it is essential to correctly identify the local obstacles.

समझ के प्रश्न — Comprehension questions:

  1. What did the neighboring district's data show, six months after its own transport pilot?
  2. According to this note, what were the two real reasons for irregular attendance there?
  3. Explain in your own words why this note does not automatically disprove Priya's argument about her own three districts.
  4. What general lesson does the note draw about adopting new projects?

Writing Workshop

Complete all parts in standard Devanagari.

लेखन कार्य — Writing task:

  1. State your position on whether the transport pilot should be continued and expanded, using मेरी स्थिति यह है कि.
  2. Present evidence from Chapter 8's data note, attributed with के अनुसार or के आधार पर.
  3. Introduce the neighboring district's counterargument from this chapter's Reading Practice, using हालाँकि.
  4. Respond to the counterargument with a rebuttal using फिर भी or इसके बावजूद, explaining why the two contexts differ.
  5. Restate your position in a closing sentence.

संपादन सूची — Editing checklist:

  • The position is stated clearly at the beginning and restated at the end.
  • Each piece of evidence is attributed to a specific, named source.
  • The counterargument is presented fairly, not caricatured or dismissed without engagement.
  • The rebuttal explains a genuine reason the counterargument does not overturn the position.
  • Claim, evidence, example, and interpretation remain visibly distinct.
  • Spelling, matras, conjuncts, and punctuation are correct throughout.

Speaking Practice

नियंत्रित अभ्यास — Controlled practice: दावा और प्रमाण — Claim and Evidence

State three sentences aloud, each pairing a claim with one piece of attributed evidence, using a frame from Section 9.4.

संचार कार्य — Communicative task: तर्क की रक्षा — Defend the Position

With a partner, take turns playing Priya and Deepak from the Model Dialogue. One partner presents the position and supporting evidence; the other raises the neighboring district's counterargument, and the first partner responds with a rebuttal.

अकेले अभ्यास — Solo alternative

Record yourself defending Priya's position in under two minutes: state the position, present two pieces of evidence, acknowledge the counterargument, and give your rebuttal. Listen back and check that your concession and rebuttal are audibly distinct.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Argument without aggression

In Hindi institutional and academic-adjacent writing, as in many professional traditions, a strong argument is not a loud one. Acknowledging a genuine counterargument, as Priya does with the neighboring district's report, is generally seen as a sign of a more credible and trustworthy writer, not a weaker one.

Culture in Context — Naming sources precisely

Institutional Hindi writing typically names its sources specifically — आँकड़ा नोट, अभिभावकों का सर्वेक्षण, पड़ोसी ज़िले की रिपोर्ट — rather than referring vaguely to "studies" or "reports." This helps a reader evaluate each claim on its own terms.

Culture in Context — Public topics and stereotypes

When arguing about community or public issues, careful writers avoid drawing sweeping conclusions about an entire region, community, or group from a small set of sources. Priya's rebuttal focuses on a specific, identifiable difference between the two districts rather than a general claim about one place being better than another.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Ignoring a genuine counterargument

Error: Writing an argument that uses only the supporting sources and leaves out the neighboring district's contrary finding entirely.

Correction: Acknowledge the counterargument explicitly with हालाँकि, as Priya does, before responding to it.

Common Mistake — Dismissing counterevidence without engagement

Error: Responding to the counterargument with a vague dismissal such as वह रिपोर्ट सही नहीं है without explaining why.

Correction: Give a specific reason the two contexts differ, as Priya does by pointing to the difference in distance as the underlying obstacle.

Common Mistake — Blending sources together

Error: Writing रिपोर्टों के अनुसार when referring to different sources with different, even conflicting, findings.

Correction: Name each source individually, as in आँकड़ा नोट के अनुसार... जबकि पड़ोसी ज़िले की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार....

Chapter Review

1. Return to the Reading Practice note and answer in English:

  1. What did the neighboring district's data show?
  2. Why doesn't this finding automatically disprove Priya's argument?

भाग B — शब्दावली और व्याकरण (Vocabulary and Grammar)

1. Choose the correct connector for each sentence and explain your choice:

  1. ______, पड़ोसी ज़िले में यह पायलट सफल नहीं रहा। (हालाँकि / इसलिए)
  2. ______, हमारे संदर्भ में परिस्थितियाँ अलग थीं। (फिर भी / के अनुसार)

भाग C — पठन (Reading)

1. In your own words, explain the two real causes of irregular attendance identified in the neighboring district's note, and why they differ from Priya's districts.

1. Complete the full Writing Workshop task: position, evidence, counterargument, rebuttal, and restated position.

भाग E — वाचन (Speaking)

1. Complete the Solo Alternative or Communicative Task recording, clearly separating position, evidence, concession, and rebuttal.

Cumulative Review

This chapter recycles the hedging and cautious-interpretation language from Chapter 8, the summary-response distinction from Chapter 7, and the reference postpositions from Chapter 6, combining them into a single structured argument. This claim-evidence-counterargument-rebuttal structure becomes the foundation for the integrated analytical task in Chapter 10.

Practical Performance Task

स्रोत-आधारित तर्क — Source-Based Argument

Complete the following connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the position-and-evidence passage and complete the listening table.
  2. Read the neighboring district's note and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Gather three sources — Chapter 8's data note, the parent-survey figures within it, and this chapter's neighboring-district note (or sources assigned by your instructor).
  4. Speak a short defense of your position, presenting evidence, the counterargument, and your rebuttal, in under two minutes.
  5. Write a short source-based position essay using the Writing Workshop steps, keeping claim, evidence, and interpretation visibly distinct.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Clear positionThe position is stated clearly at the start and restated at the end.
Attributed evidenceEach piece of evidence is tied to a specific, named source.
Fair counterargumentThe counterargument is presented accurately and without caricature.
Reasoned rebuttalThe rebuttal gives a specific, honest reason the position still holds.
Claim/evidence distinctionClaim, evidence, example, and interpretation are kept visibly separate.
Devanagari and mechanicsSpelling, matras, conjuncts, and punctuation are correct throughout.

Chapter 10 reviews and integrates the reading, summary, data-interpretation, and argument-building work of Chapters 6-9 into one assessed analytical task.

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. Priya's position is that the transport pilot should be continued and expanded next year.
  2. The neighboring district's report shows that a similar transport pilot there did not lead to any notable improvement in attendance.
  3. Priya responds by pointing out that the circumstances differed: in the neighboring district, schools were already close by, whereas in her own districts distance was the main obstacle, so the pilot remains effective in her context.

Listening

  • The speaker's main position is that the transport pilot project should be continued next year.
  • The neighboring district's report goes against the speaker's argument.
  • The speaker responds by noting that distance was never the main obstacle in the neighboring district, unlike in their own districts, so the two situations are not truly comparable.

Reading — Comprehension

  1. Six months after their own transport pilot, the neighboring district's attendance rate showed no notable change from before the pilot.
  2. The two real causes given were household work and seasonal farm work, not distance.
  3. Model answer: The neighboring district's obstacle was different from Priya's — distance was never their main problem, so a transport fix there would not be expected to raise attendance, while it plausibly would in districts where distance genuinely was the barrier.
  4. The note recommends correctly identifying local obstacles before adopting any new project, since the same intervention does not work identically in every context.

Chapter Review — भाग B

  1. (a) हालाँकि — this introduces the concession about the neighboring district's result. (b) फिर भी — this introduces the rebuttal that follows the concession.

Looking Ahead

अब आप क्या कर सकते हैं — What you can do now

You can build a structured Hindi argument from multiple named sources, state and defend a clear position, and honestly acknowledge and respond to a counterargument rather than ignoring it. This ability to hold a position while engaging fairly with complicating evidence prepares you for the integrated analytical work ahead.
