Ripasso 2: Una giornata pratica
Chapter Overview and Objectives
Chapter 10 is a review chapter. It does not introduce new grammar. Instead, it brings together everything you learned in Chapters 6-9 — home and neighborhood, daily routines, food and drink, and shopping — and asks you to use it together across one practical, connected day. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Describe a home and neighborhood using c'è/ci sono and location expressions.
- Explain a daily schedule using present-tense regular and high-frequency irregular verbs.
- Order food and drink politely, using quantities and preference language.
- Shop for an item, ask its price, compare two choices, and state a preference.
- Combine these four everyday domains into a single connected spoken and written account.
- Edit a practical text for spelling, accents, apostrophes, agreement, and scheduled verb forms.
Communication Scenario
It is Saturday, and Aisha is spending the day the way she often does: a bit of housework and neighborhood errands in the morning, lunch with Marco in the early afternoon, and a stop at the market and a small shop before heading home. A friend, Chiara, calls partway through the day to ask what Aisha has been up to and what she still needs to do.
- This chapter reviews how to describe a home, plan a day, order food, and shop — the four communication domains from Unit II.
- You will practice this through Aisha's Saturday, then apply it to a practical day of your own.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 10 closes Unit II. It does not teach new grammar. It consolidates Chapters 6-9 and prepares you for Unit III, where you will move outward into the wider community.
Coming Into This Chapter
You can describe a home and neighborhood with c'è/ci sono (Ch. 6), talk about your daily routine in the present tense (Ch. 7), order food and drink with mi piace/mi piacciono and vorrei (Ch. 8), and shop, compare, and state a preference (Ch. 9).
In This Chapter
No new grammar. You will combine location, routine, food, and shopping language into one connected practical day, in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Looking Forward
Chapter 11, Muoversi in città, begins Unit III with directions and getting around the city.

| preferisco | I prefer | Ch. 9 |
This chapter introduces no new productive vocabulary. All items above should already be familiar; use this table only to refresh your memory.
Pronunciation Focus
Unit II contains many high-frequency words with doubled consonants, such as settanta and ottanta, alongside words with a single consonant in the same position, such as costano. Say each pair aloud and listen for the extra length in the doubled forms: costano vs. ottanta.
10.1 Rhythm across a connected day
When you narrate a full day — morning, afternoon, and evening — keep each clause short and let your voice fall slightly at the end of each complete idea before moving to the next: La mattina faccio la spesa. Il pomeriggio pranzo con Marco. La sera guardo la televisione. Avoid rushing all three clauses together without a pause.
Grammar Review
This chapter introduces no new grammar. The boxes below review the systems from Chapters 6-9 that you will need for the integrated tasks in this chapter.
Form: c'è (singular), ci sono (plural).
Use: In cucina c'è un tavolo. In soggiorno ci sono due divani. (In the kitchen there is a table. In the living room there are two sofas.)
Form: regular -are, -ere, and -ire endings for io, tu, lui/lei/Lei, and noi.
Use: Mi alzo alle sette. Faccio colazione e poi vado al lavoro. (I get up at seven. I have breakfast and then I go to work.)
Form: mi piace + singular noun; mi piacciono + plural noun; vorrei + noun or infinitive.
Use: Mi piace il caffè. Mi piacciono i cornetti. Vorrei un cappuccino, per favore.
Form: quanto costa? / quanto costano?; questo/questa/questi/queste; più/meno... di; preferisco.
Use: Quanto costa questa sciarpa? È più cara di quella, ma preferisco il colore.
Model Dialogue
Setting: Chiara calls Aisha on Saturday afternoon to see how her day is going, as described in the Communication Scenario above.
Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:
- What has Aisha already done this morning?
- What does Aisha want to order for lunch?
- What does Chiara suggest about the scarf?

Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Italian speaker to read the passage below aloud, at a natural pace, twice.
If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Italian speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
La giornata di Aisha — Aisha's day:
"La mattina, Aisha pulisce la cucina e fa la spesa vicino a casa. A mezzogiorno, pranza con Marco al bar in piazza: prende un panino al formaggio e un succo d'arancia. Nel pomeriggio, va al mercato e poi al negozio di abbigliamento, dove vede una sciarpa verde. La sciarpa verde è più cara della sciarpa rossa, ma ad Aisha piace di più il colore verde."
Compito di ascolto — Listening task:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where does Aisha shop in the morning? | ______ |
| What does Aisha order for lunch? | ______ |
| Which scarf is more expensive? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
Pratica controllata — Controlled practice: narrate a routine day
Describe your own home briefly, then say what you typically do in the morning, afternoon, and evening, using present-tense verbs from Chapter 7.
Compito comunicativo — Communicative task: a full practical day
With a partner, take turns playing Aisha and Chiara. Describe your home and neighborhood, explain your schedule, order something to eat or drink, and finish with a shopping exchange that includes a price question, a comparison, and a stated preference.
Pratica da solo — Solo alternative
Record yourself narrating one full practical day: a location description, a part of your routine, a food order, and a shopping comparison.
Reading Practice
Read the message below aloud, sounding out each Italian word slowly.
The forms sono andata and l'ho comprata use the past tense, which is introduced formally in Chapter 16. Treat them here as recognition-only; you are not expected to produce past-tense forms independently yet.
Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:
- What did Aisha do at midday?
- How much does the green scarf cost?
- Why did Aisha choose the green scarf even though it costs more?
Writing Workshop
Write a connected practical-day paragraph, combining home, routine, food, and shopping language from Unit II.
Compito di scrittura — Writing task: Write eight to ten sentences describing a practical day. Include: a short description of your home or neighborhood; at least two routine activities with times; a food or drink order with a preference; and a shopping comparison with a price question, più/meno... di, and preferisco.
- Describe your home or neighborhood. Use c'è/ci sono and a location expression.
- Explain part of your routine. Use present-tense verbs and at least one time expression.
- Order food or drink. Use vorrei or mi piace/mi piacciono.
- Compare two shopping choices. Use a price question, più/meno... di, and preferisco.
Lista di controllo — Editing checklist:
- c'è is used for one thing, ci sono for more than one.
- Present-tense verb endings match the subject.
- mi piace is used with singular nouns, mi piacciono with plural nouns.
- Adjectives and demonstratives agree in gender and number.
- Accents, apostrophes, and doubled consonants are spelled correctly.
Culture and Communication
Not everyone shops, eats, or plans a Saturday the way Aisha does. Household chores, meal times, and errands vary by region, household, income, and personal schedule across Italy and other Italian-speaking communities. Avoid treating one practical day as the practical day.
Calling or messaging a friend partway through the day to check in, as Chiara does, is common among friends and family in many Italian-speaking contexts. The tone stays informal and friendly, using tu throughout, since Aisha and Chiara are close friends.
Common Mistakes
Error: Saying c'è due divani instead of the correct form.
Correction: Use the plural form for more than one thing: ci sono due divani.
Error: Saying Marco pranza con Marco confusing subject endings, such as io pranza instead of io pranzo.
Correction: Match the ending to the subject: io pranzo, Marco pranza.
Error: Saying mi piace i cornetti instead of the correct form.
Correction: cornetti is plural, so use mi piacciono i cornetti.
Error: Saying più cara che la sciarpa rossa in this type of comparison.
Correction: When comparing two named items, use di: più cara della sciarpa rossa.
Chapter Summary
In this review chapter you combined the home and neighborhood language of Chapter 6, the daily routine language of Chapter 7, the food and drink language of Chapter 8, and the shopping language of Chapter 9 into one connected practical day. You practiced c'è/ci sono, present-tense verbs, mi piace/mi piacciono, vorrei, price questions, demonstratives, comparison, and preferire together in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. No new grammar was introduced.
