Volume I, Chapter 12: Free Time and Weather · Speak and Write Italian: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Overview and Objectives

Chapter 12 continues Unit III by moving from getting around the city into what you do once you get there. You will talk about hobbies and free-time activities, describe the weather, invite someone to do something, accept or politely decline, and say what you are doing right now. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Talk about hobbies and leisure activities you enjoy.
  2. Describe basic weather conditions and seasons.
  3. Invite someone to an activity using vuoi...?, ti va di...?, and andiamo...?.
  4. Accept an invitation or decline it politely.
  5. Say what you are doing right now using stare + gerundio in controlled patterns.
  6. Read and interpret a weather forecast or event listing.

Communication Scenario

Marco calls his friend Giulia to see if she wants to do something this weekend. She checks the weather forecast on her phone while they talk, and together they decide between two possible plans depending on whether it rains.

  1. This chapter teaches you to discuss hobbies, weather, and plans, and to invite someone and respond.
  2. You will practice this through Marco and Giulia's phone call, then apply it to your own weekend plans.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 12 continues Unit III. It builds on the routine present tense from Chapter 7 and the preference language of Chapter 8, and it introduces new material: weather expressions, invitation formulas, and the current-activity pattern stare + gerundio.

Coming Into This Chapter

You can already talk about routines with present-tense verbs (Ch. 7) and express likes with mi piace (Ch. 8). You can also give and follow directions (Ch. 11).

In This Chapter

You will add weather expressions, hobby vocabulary, invitation formulas, and a first controlled look at stare + gerundio for describing what someone is doing right now.

Looking Forward

Chapter 13, Salute e benessere, continues Unit III with health, symptoms, and basic advice.

Stare + gerundio is introduced here in a small set of controlled patterns for describing the current moment. It is not yet a fully productive system; do not attempt to build new gerund forms beyond the verbs practiced in this chapter.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus — Gerund endings and invitation intonation

Gerund forms end in -ando for -are verbs and -endo for -ere and -ire verbs, as in giocando (JO-kan-do) and leggendo (le-JEN-do). Keep the stress on the syllable before the ending and pronounce the final -o clearly rather than letting it fade.

12.1 Rising intonation in invitations

Invitations such as Ti va di uscire? and Andiamo al cinema? use a rising pitch on the final syllable, similar to other yes-no questions you have already practiced. A flat, falling pitch on an invitation can sound less like an invitation and more like a statement.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Language Focus — Weather expressions

Form: weather is described with fare (fa caldo, fa freddo, fa bel tempo, fa brutto tempo), c'è (c'è il sole, c'è vento, c'è nebbia), and dedicated verbs piove and nevica.

Use: Che tempo fa oggi? Fa caldo e c'è il sole. (What's the weather like today? It's hot and sunny.) These are formulaic third-person expressions; learners are not expected to conjugate piovere or nevicare in other persons at this stage.

Language Focus — Hobbies with mi piace and present-tense verbs

Form: review of mi piace / mi piacciono (Ch. 8) combined with new regular present-tense activity verbs.

Use: Mi piace nuotare. Gioco a calcio ogni sabato. (I like to swim. I play soccer every Saturday.)

Language Focus — Invitation formulas

Form: Vuoi + infinitive?, Ti va di + infinitive?, and Andiamo + a + place/activity? as fixed invitation patterns.

Use: Vuoi guardare un film stasera? Ti va di fare una passeggiata? Respond with Volentieri! or a softened refusal such as Mi dispiace, ma devo studiare.

Language Focus — stare + gerundio for current activity

Form: sto/stai/sta + [verb stem]-ando/-endo. Sto guardando un film. Cosa stai facendo?

Use and boundary: This pattern contrasts current activity with the ordinary routine present you already know: Di solito gioco a calcio, ma adesso sto guardando la TV. (I usually play soccer, but right now I'm watching TV.) Productive use stays limited to io, tu, and lui/lei/Lei with a small set of familiar verbs; broader gerund use is developed in later chapters.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Marco calls his friend Giulia on the phone to make weekend plans, as described in the Communication Scenario above.

Marco Ciao Giulia! Che tempo fa da te oggi? CHAH-o JOO-lee-a! Keh TEM-po fa da teh o-JEE? Hi Giulia! What's the weather like where you are today?
Giulia Fa bel tempo, c'è il sole. Perché, cosa stai facendo? Fa bel TEM-po, cheh eel SO-leh. Pehr-KEH, KO-za sty fa-CHEN-do? The weather's nice, it's sunny. Why, what are you doing?
Marco Sto guardando le previsioni. Ti va di fare una passeggiata in centro? Sto gwar-DAN-do leh preh-vee-ZYO-nee. Tee va dee FA-reh OO-na pa-seh-JA-ta een CHEN-tro? I'm looking at the forecast. Do you feel like taking a walk downtown?
Giulia Volentieri! Ma domani dicono che piove. Andiamo al cinema invece, se piove? Vo-len-TYEH-ree! Ma do-MA-nee DEE-ko-no keh PYO-veh. An-DYA-mo al CHEE-neh-ma een-VEH-cheh, seh PYO-veh? Gladly! But tomorrow they say it will rain. Shall we go to the movies instead, if it rains?
Marco Buona idea. Allora oggi passeggiata, domani cinema se piove. BWO-na ee-DEH-a. Al-LO-ra o-JEE pa-seh-JA-ta, do-MA-nee CHEE-neh-ma seh PYO-veh. Good idea. So today a walk, tomorrow the movies if it rains.
Giulia Perfetto, a dopo! Pehr-FET-to, a DO-po! Perfect, see you later!

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is the weather like at Giulia's today?
  2. What does Marco invite Giulia to do?
  3. What is the backup plan, and why?

Guided Practice

Esercizio 1 — Complete the weather expressions:

  1. Oggi ______ (fare) molto caldo.
  2. In inverno ______ spesso (nevicare).
  3. ______ il sole oggi, non c'è una nuvola. (c'è / ci sono)

Esercizio 2 — Complete with the correct form of stare + gerundio:

  1. Io (guardare) ______ un film adesso.
  2. Tu (leggere) ______ un libro interessante?
  3. Marco (fare) ______ una passeggiata in centro.

Esercizio 3 — Choose the appropriate invitation or response:

  1. Andrea invites you to play soccer. Accept: ______ (Volentieri! / Mi dispiace, ma...)
  2. You already have plans. Decline politely: ______ (Volentieri! / Mi dispiace, ma devo studiare.)
  3. Ask a friend informally if they want to go to the movies: ______ (Vuole...? / Vuoi...?)

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a study partner, or a fluent Italian speaker to read the passage below aloud, at a natural pace, twice.

If no speaker is available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read the passage aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Italian speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

I piani del weekend — Weekend plans:
"Marco telefona a Giulia per sapere che tempo fa. Oggi fa bel tempo e c'è il sole, così Marco invita Giulia a fare una passeggiata in centro. Giulia accetta volentieri. Però dicono che domani piove, quindi decidono di andare al cinema domani se il tempo è brutto. Marco è contento del piano."

Compito di ascolto — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
What's the weather like today?______
What does Marco invite Giulia to do today?______
What is the plan for tomorrow, and under what condition?______

Speaking Practice

Pratica controllata — Controlled practice: weather and hobbies

With a partner, take turns asking Che tempo fa da te oggi? and describing one hobby you enjoy in that kind of weather.

Compito comunicativo — Communicative task: make a weekend plan

Invite your partner to two different activities using two different invitation formulas. Your partner should accept one and politely decline the other, then propose a backup plan based on the weather.

Pratica da solo — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing today's weather, one thing you are doing right now, and one activity you would like to invite a friend to do this weekend.

Reading Practice

Read the weather forecast and message below aloud, sounding out each Italian word slowly.

Previsioni del weekend — Weekend forecast
Sabato: sole, caldo, 28 gradi. Domenica: nuvoloso, possibile pioggia nel pomeriggio, 22 gradi.
Saturday: sunny, hot, 28 degrees. Sunday: cloudy, possible rain in the afternoon, 22 degrees.
Un messaggio di Giulia a Marco — A message from Giulia to Marco
Ciao Marco! Ho visto le previsioni: sabato fa bel tempo, ma domenica pomeriggio forse piove. Ti va di fare la passeggiata sabato mattina, prima che faccia troppo caldo? Sto già pensando a dove andare!
Hi Marco! I saw the forecast: Saturday the weather's nice, but Sunday afternoon it might rain. Do you feel like taking the walk Saturday morning, before it gets too hot? I'm already thinking about where to go!

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is the forecast for Saturday, and what is it for Sunday?
  2. When does Giulia suggest doing the walk, and why?
  3. What is Giulia already doing, according to her message?

Writing Workshop

Write a short invitation message that combines weather, hobbies, and an invitation formula.

Compito di scrittura — Writing task: Write six to eight sentences inviting a friend to do an activity this weekend. Include: a description of the weather; at least one hobby or activity you enjoy; an invitation formula (Vuoi...?, Ti va di...?, or Andiamo...?); and one sentence using stare + gerundio to say what you are doing right now.

  1. Describe the weather. Use fare, c'è, piove, or nevica.
  2. Mention a hobby or activity. Use mi piace or a present-tense activity verb.
  3. Extend an invitation. Use one of the three invitation formulas from this chapter.
  4. Say what you are doing right now. Use sto/stai/sta + gerundio.

Lista di controllo — Editing checklist:

  • Weather expressions use fare, c'è, or the dedicated verb correctly.
  • The invitation formula matches an informal tu relationship.
  • The gerund ends in -ando or -endo and matches the subject with sto/stai/sta.
  • Accents and apostrophes are spelled correctly, especially in c'è and perché.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Leisure varies by season, region, and community

Free-time activities and typical weather patterns vary widely across Italian regions and other Italian-speaking communities, from mountain areas to coastal cities. Avoid assuming that every Italian-speaking region shares the same climate, holidays, or leisure habits.

Culture in Context — Softening a refusal

When Giulia proposes an alternative rather than simply saying no, she is following a common pattern in friendly Italian conversation: refusals are often softened with an explanation or a counter-suggestion rather than stated bluntly.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — Using essere instead of fare or c'è for weather

Error: Saying È caldo oggi to describe the weather, modeled directly on English "It is hot today."

Correction: Use the weather-specific formula: Fa caldo oggi. Essere describes objects and people, not weather conditions in this pattern.

Common Mistake — Confusing routine present with stare + gerundio

Error: Saying Gioco a calcio to mean "I am playing soccer right now," when the speaker means the current moment, not a habitual routine.

Correction: For the current moment, use Sto giocando a calcio. Reserve the simple present for routines and general facts, as in Gioco a calcio ogni sabato.

Common Mistake — Refusing without softening

Error: Responding to an invitation with a flat No.

Correction: Soften the refusal: Mi dispiace, ma devo studiare. Magari un'altra volta.

Chapter Summary

In this chapter you learned to talk about hobbies and free-time activities, describe the weather with fare, c'è, piove, and nevica, invite someone using vuoi...?, ti va di...?, and andiamo...?, and describe current activity with a controlled use of stare + gerundio. You practiced accepting and softening refusals, and applied these systems in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
