Volume II, Chapter 13: Purchases, Services, and Practical Problems · Speak and Write Italian: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Overview and Objectives

Rita's extension request went well, but now a different kind of problem has landed on her doorstep: an online order that arrived broken. Down the hall, Paolo's neighbor has a leaking washing machine and no idea how to ask a technician to come fix it. This chapter moves Unit III into the practical, sometimes frustrating world of purchases and repairs, where getting help means being clear about a problem without sounding rude. You will develop the indirect object pronouns from Chapters 11 and 12 further, meet ci and ne for the first time in controlled everyday patterns, and take your first careful look at combined pronouns. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a practical problem with a purchase, delivery, or repair using vocabulary from this chapter.
  2. Request a repair, exchange, refund, or clarification appropriately.
  3. Use indirect object pronouns mi, ti, gli, le, ci, and vi in service contexts.
  4. Use ci for place and ne for quantity or reference in controlled patterns.
  5. Recognize combined pronouns such as me lo and glielo without full productive command.
  6. Read receipts, notices, and short service messages for practical information.
  7. Write a short complaint or service request that is firm but polite.

Communication Scenario

A package Rita ordered a week ago has finally arrived — with a cracked lamp inside. She needs to contact the seller, explain the problem, and ask for a replacement or a refund without sounding angry. Meanwhile, Paolo's neighbor Signora Rossi has a washing machine that has been leaking for two days, and Paolo offers to help her call a technician and explain the problem clearly.

  1. You will read and listen to Rita contacting a customer service line, and to Paolo helping Signora Rossi describe her problem to a technician.
  2. You will then complete a task in which you describe a practical problem and write a complaint or service request of your own.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 13 continues Unit III, Partecipare alla comunità, developing indirect object pronouns further and introducing ci and ne in controlled practical contexts.

Coming Into This Chapter

You can form relative clauses with che, make formal requests with vorrei and potrei, and use indirect object pronouns such as Le, le, and gli in formal communication.

In This Chapter

You will apply indirect object pronouns to everyday service situations, meet ci and ne for the first time, and learn to soften a complaint so that it stays polite — starting with a broken delivery and a leaking washing machine.

Looking Forward

Chapter 14 continues Unit III with opinions, media, and explanations, consolidating comparison and reason clauses while introducing awareness of the subjunctive after opinion expressions.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus — clitic-pronoun rhythm and polite complaint intonation

Clitic pronouns attach closely to the verb that follows them, forming a single rhythmic unit: Mi pause-free into manda in Mi manda un tecnico? is said as one smooth phrase, not as two separated words. A polite complaint keeps a level, unhurried tone rather than a sharp rising or falling pitch: Purtroppo il pacco è arrivato rotto is delivered evenly, without the clipped emphasis that would sound like frustration in English.

13.1 Stress and rhythm in clitic-verb groups

Practice the smooth join in gliel'ho detto (lyel-O DET-to) and ce l'ha (cheh LA), where two pronouns combine before a verb. Stress remains on the verb, never on the clitic itself.

13.2 Softening tone in spoken complaints

Compare a flat statement of fact, Il pacco è rotto, with a softened complaint, Purtroppo il pacco è arrivato rotto e vorrei chiedere un sostituto. The added words slow the phrase and give it a more even, less accusatory rhythm.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Language Focus — indirect object pronouns in service contexts

Chapters 11 and 12 introduced indirect object pronouns in advice and formal address. This chapter develops the same system in everyday service situations, where you say what happens to or for someone.

PronounMeaningExample
mito meMi manda un tecnico, per favore?
tito you (informal)Ti spiego il problema.
glito him / to themGli ho scritto per il reso.
leto herLe ho chiesto un rimborso.
cito usCi hanno mandato il pacco sbagliato.
vito you (plural)Vi scrivo per segnalare un problema.

Indirect object pronouns are placed directly before a conjugated verb, as in the examples above, or attached to an infinitive: Devo scrivergli ("I have to write to him"). Both placements are correct; this chapter practices both.

Language Focus — ci and ne in controlled patterns

Ci and ne are small words that replace a place or a quantity so you do not have to repeat it.

WordReplacesExample
cia place already mentionedVai al negozio? Sì, ci vado domani.
cia situation or idea (idiomatic)Non ci credo!
nea quantity of somethingQuanti pacchi hai ricevuto? Ne ho ricevuto uno.
ne"of it / of them" (topic reference)Ne parliamo domani.

This chapter limits ci and ne to high-frequency service and everyday patterns. Neither word translates as a single English word; learn each through its pattern rather than a fixed equivalent. Expanded uses of ci and ne return in later chapters and volumes.

Language Focus — combined pronouns (recognition)

Italian can combine an indirect object pronoun with a direct object pronoun, as in me lo ("it to me") or glielo ("it to him/her," written as one word). You will recognize these combinations in this chapter's reading and listening, but you are not expected to build them productively yet.

Combined formMeaningExample
me loit to meMe lo può spedire di nuovo?
glieloit to him/her (one word)Gliel'ho già spiegato.

Full combined-pronoun formation and clitic clusters become productive in a later volume. Here, treat combined forms as recognition items supported by glossing.

Relative clauses with che and formal request patterns from Chapter 12 remain fully active and may be recycled naturally throughout this chapter's tasks.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Rita is on the phone with a customer service representative about her broken delivery.

Operatore Buongiorno, servizio clienti. Come posso aiutarLa? Bwon-JOR-no, ser-VEE-tsyo klee-EN-tee. KO-meh PO-so ay-yoo-TAR-la? Good morning, customer service. How can I help you?

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What was wrong with Rita's order?
  2. What two options does the representative offer?
  3. Which does Rita choose, and by when does she ask for it?

Guided Practice

Esercizio 1 — Complete with the correct indirect object pronoun:

  1. Il pacco è arrivato rotto. ______ scrivo per chiedere un rimborso. (to them, formal service)
  2. Ho parlato con mia sorella e ______ ho spiegato il problema. (to her)
  3. Il tecnico è venuto e ______ ho mostrato la lavatrice. (to him)

Esercizio 2 — Choose ci or ne:

  1. Vai al negozio domani? Sì, ______ vado alle dieci.
  2. Quanti scontrini hai? ______ ho due.
  3. ______ parliamo quando arriva il tecnico.

Esercizio 3 — Identify the meaning of the combined pronoun (recognition only):

  1. Me lo può spedire di nuovo? → What does lo refer to?
  2. Gliel'ho già spiegato. → Who is gli, and what does l' refer to?

Esercizio 4 — Rewrite each direct complaint to soften it:

  1. Il pacco è rotto! Voglio i soldi indietro! →
  2. La lavatrice non funziona. Venite subito! →

Listening Practice

Ask an instructor, study partner, or fluent Italian speaker to read the passage below aloud, at a natural pace, twice.

If no speakers are available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Italian speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Dal vicino — At the neighbor's:
"Signora Rossi, mi dica: da quanto tempo perde acqua la lavatrice?" "Da due giorni, Paolo. Non so cosa fare." "Tranquilla, adesso chiamo io il tecnico e gli spiego il problema." "Grazie mille, sei molto gentile." "Figurati. Pronto? Buongiorno, vorrei segnalare un problema con una lavatrice che perde acqua da due giorni. Potreste mandarci un tecnico questa settimana?" "Certo, ve ne mandiamo uno giovedì mattina." "Perfetto, grazie."

Compito di ascolto — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
How long has the washing machine been leaking?______
What does Paolo offer to do?______
When will the technician come?______

Speaking Practice

Pratica controllata — Controlled practice: indirect object pronouns

With a partner, take turns completing sentences with the correct indirect object pronoun based on a service situation (Il negozio ______ ha mandato il pacco sbagliato).

Compito comunicativo — Communicative task: reporting a problem

In pairs, role-play a conversation between a customer and a service representative or technician. One partner describes a problem with a purchase or repair and softens the complaint; the other offers a solution.

Pratica da solo — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing a practical problem (a broken item, a late delivery, a needed repair) using at least one indirect object pronoun and one softened complaint expression.

Reading Practice

Read the message below aloud, sounding out each Italian word slowly.

Messaggio di reclamo — Complaint message
Oggetto: Problema con l'ordine n. 4471

Buongiorno,

Vi scrivo per segnalare un problema con l'ordine che ho ricevuto ieri. Purtroppo la lampada che ho ordinato è arrivata rotta. Vorrei chiedere una sostituzione, se possibile, oppure un rimborso. Mi può dire come procedere?

Resto in attesa di una Sua risposta.

Cordiali saluti,
Rita Marino
Subject: Problem with order no. 4471. Good morning, I am writing to you to report a problem with the order I received yesterday. Unfortunately the lamp I ordered arrived broken. I would like to ask for a replacement, if possible, or a refund. Could you tell me how to proceed? I look forward to your reply. Kind regards, Rita Marino

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is the order number mentioned in the message?
  2. What two solutions does Rita propose?
  3. Find the indirect object pronoun in the message and identify what it refers to.

Writing Workshop

Write a short complaint or service request about a purchase, delivery, or repair problem.

Compito di scrittura — Writing task: Write a message of five to seven sentences. Include: a brief subject line; a description of the problem using at least one relative clause with che; at least one indirect object pronoun; a softened complaint expression such as purtroppo or mi dispiace, ma...; a clearly stated request; and an appropriate closing.

  1. Write a subject line. State the problem briefly.
  2. Open politely. Use Buongiorno or Gentile....
  3. Describe the problem. Use purtroppo and a relative clause with che where useful.
  4. Make your request. Ask clearly for a repair, replacement, or refund.
  5. Close formally. Use Cordiali saluti and sign your name.

Lista di controllo — Editing checklist:

  • The complaint is clear but remains polite throughout.
  • At least one indirect object pronoun is placed correctly.
  • Accents, apostrophes, and double consonants follow standard Italian spelling.
  • The request (repair, replacement, or refund) is stated clearly.
  • The closing matches the level of formality used in the opening.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — softening a complaint

In many Italian service contexts, a complaint is expected to remain calm and polite even when the customer is frustrated. Words like purtroppo and phrases like vorrei segnalare soften a statement of fact without weakening the request itself. Learners should avoid translating a blunt English complaint word for word.

Culture in Context — neighbors and everyday help

Asking a neighbor for help with a practical problem, or helping a neighbor make a call, is common in many Italian communities, though the closeness of neighbor relationships varies by building, town, and region. The example in this chapter reflects one everyday situation and should not be taken as universal.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — confusing ci and ne

Error: Writing Ne vado domani when replacing a place already mentioned.

Correction: Ci vado domani. Ci replaces a place; ne replaces a quantity or topic.

Common Mistake — placing the indirect object pronoun after the verb

Error: Writing Ho scritto gli per il reso, placing gli after the conjugated verb as in English word order.

Correction: Gli ho scritto per il reso. The pronoun goes directly before the conjugated verb.

Common Mistake — complaining too directly

Error: Writing Il pacco è rotto, voglio i soldi subito, a demand with no softening.

Correction: Purtroppo il pacco è arrivato rotto e vorrei chiedere un rimborso, which states the same request with a softer, more polite tone.

Chapter Summary

This chapter continued Unit III by developing indirect object pronouns into everyday service contexts, introducing ci and ne in controlled patterns, and giving you a first look at combined pronouns as recognition items. You followed Rita as she reported a broken delivery to customer service, and Paolo as he helped his neighbor describe a leaking washing machine to a technician, practicing the balance between a clear complaint and a polite tone.

Chapter Review

Parte A — Comprensione (Comprehension)

1. Return to the model dialogue and answer in English:

  1. What solution does Rita choose for her broken lamp?
  2. How will Rita receive confirmation of the replacement?

Parte B — Grammatica (Grammar)

1. Complete with the correct indirect object pronoun: Ho scritto al negozio e ______ ho chiesto un rimborso. (to them)

2. Choose ci or ne: Quanti pacchi hai ricevuto? ______ ho ricevuto due.

3. Identify what lo refers to in Me lo può spedire di nuovo?

Parte C — Lettura (Reading)

1. Return to the complaint message and answer:

  1. What went wrong with Rita's order?
  2. What does Rita ask the seller to tell her?

Parte D — Scrittura (Writing)

1. Write a short complaint or service request following the writing workshop steps above.

Parte E — Parlato (Speaking)

1. With a partner or recorded solo, role-play a service conversation reporting a problem and asking for a solution.

Practical Performance Task

Chapter 13 Performance Task — Acquisti, Servizi e Problemi Pratici

Complete a Service-Problem Exchange

Complete the following four connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the neighbor passage and complete the listening table.
  2. Read the complaint message and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Write a short complaint or service request, following the writing workshop steps.
  4. Speak by role-playing a service conversation with a partner or recording a solo description of a practical problem.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Problem descriptionThe learner accurately describes a practical problem using chapter vocabulary.
Indirect object pronounsThe learner correctly places at least one indirect object pronoun in a service context.
ci and neThe learner uses ci or ne appropriately in a controlled pattern.
Softened complaintThe learner states a complaint or request clearly while maintaining a polite tone.
Register and toneThe learner adjusts formality appropriately to the service situation.

This task develops indirect object pronouns and introduces ci and ne in controlled contexts. It does not require full command of combined pronouns or advanced consumer-rights vocabulary.

Looking Ahead

Cosa sai fare ora — What you can do now

You can now describe a practical problem with a purchase or repair, use indirect object pronouns in everyday service situations, use ci and ne in controlled patterns, and recognize combined pronouns in context. This continues Unit III, Partecipare alla comunità, moving you closer to full participation in health, work, service, and community situations at emerging B1 level.

Andando avanti: Capitolo 14 — Continuing on: Chapter 14

Chapter 14 moves from practical service problems into opinions, media, and explanations. You will consolidate comparison and reason clauses, practice supporting an opinion with examples, and gain awareness of the subjunctive after opinion expressions — while Rita and Paolo discuss a film they both watched.
