Volume II, Chapter 14: Opinions, Media, and Explanations · Speak and Write Italian: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Overview and Objectives

The washing machine has been fixed and Rita's lamp is on its way, so this week Rita and Paolo have time for something more relaxed: a film they both watched over the weekend. But even a relaxed conversation about a movie means comparing it to others, giving reasons for an opinion, and gently disagreeing without sounding harsh. This chapter consolidates the comparatives and superlatives you have been building since Volume I, develops the reason clauses you have used informally into more deliberate explanation, and introduces the everyday formulas Italians use to state and support an opinion. You will also get your first real look at how the subjunctive mood appears after opinion expressions — not to produce it yet, but to recognize it when it shows up in natural speech and writing. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Express an opinion about a film, event, place, or experience using formulas such as secondo me and penso che.
  2. Compare two or more things using comparative and superlative structures.
  3. Give reasons and examples to support an opinion.
  4. Summarize a short media text in your own words.
  5. Recognize the present subjunctive after selected opinion expressions without producing it independently.
  6. Read a short review or media summary for main idea and supporting detail.
  7. Write a short, supported recommendation.

Communication Scenario

Rita and Paolo both watched the same film over the weekend — a film Rita loved and Paolo found only average. Over coffee, they compare notes: which actor was better, whether the ending worked, and whether it was worth the two hours. Paolo also read a short online review that disagrees with Rita, and he wants to summarize it for her without simply repeating it word for word.

  1. You will read and listen to Rita and Paolo discussing the film, and to a short review Paolo found online.
  2. You will then complete a task in which you compare two things you know and write a short recommendation supported by reasons.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 14 completes Unit III, Partecipare alla comunità, by moving from practical problem-solving into opinion, media, and explanation.

Coming Into This Chapter

You can describe a practical problem, use indirect object pronouns in service contexts, and use ci and ne in controlled everyday patterns.

In This Chapter

You will consolidate comparison, develop reason clauses into fuller explanations, learn opinion formulas, and notice the subjunctive after opinion expressions for the first time — all through Rita and Paolo's disagreement about a film.

Looking Forward

Chapter 15 is Review 3: Partecipare alla comunità, an integrated checkpoint covering health, formal communication, service problems, and opinion — the final step before Unit IV moves into independent B1 communication.

Receptive only: la regia (direction/directing), la colonna sonora (soundtrack), il critico (critic) — useful for reading reviews, not required for production yet.

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus — stance and tactful disagreement intonation

Stating an opinion in Italian often rises slightly on the opinion formula itself — Secondo me — before settling into a level pitch for the claim that follows. Tactful disagreement softens the contrast: Non sono del tutto d'accordo is said with a gentler, more rounded rhythm than a flat, clipped English "I disagree," which can sound abrupt when transferred directly into Italian.

14.1 Rhythm in comparison structures

Practice the smooth link in più interessante di quello che pensavo (pyoo een-teh-reh-SAN-teh dee kwel-lo keh pen-SA-vo), where di joins closely to the words on either side without a pause.

14.2 Recognizing the subjunctive by ear

You do not need to produce forms like sia or venga yet, but listen for how they often follow che directly after an opinion opener, as in Penso che il film sia interessante — a pattern you will meet again and analyze fully in a later volume.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Language Focus — comparatives and superlatives consolidated

You have used comparison informally since earlier chapters. This chapter consolidates the full pattern so you can compare people, things, and experiences with confidence.

PatternMeaningExample
più ... dimore ... thanQuesto film è più lungo dell'altro.
meno ... diless ... thanLa trama è meno complicata di quanto pensassi.
così ... come / tanto ... quantoas ... asNon è così noioso come dicevi.
il/la più ... (di)the most ... (of/in)È il film più avvincente dell'anno.
migliore / peggiorebetter / worseIl libro è migliore del film.

Use di before a noun or pronoun and che when comparing two adjectives, verbs, or phrases directly: È più interessante che divertente ("It's more interesting than fun").

Language Focus — opinion formulas and supported reasons

Use these formulas to open an opinion, then support it with a reason clause and, where useful, an example.

FormulaMeaningExample
secondo mein my opinionSecondo me, il finale era deludente.
per mefor me, to mePer me, l'attrice era bravissima.
penso che...I think that...Penso che il film sia interessante.
mi sembra che...it seems to me that...Mi sembra che la trama sia un po' lenta.

Support an opinion the way you already support requests and explanations: with perché, siccome, or dato che, followed by a specific reason, and often an example introduced with per esempio.

Language Focus — the subjunctive after opinion expressions (recognition)

Notice that penso che and mi sembra che are often followed by a special verb form called the subjunctive, rather than the ordinary present tense: Penso che il film sia interessante instead of è. The subjunctive appears after expressions of opinion, doubt, emotion, and desire because the speaker is describing a personal view rather than a stated fact.

Indicative (fact)Subjunctive (opinion)
Il film è interessante.Penso che il film sia interessante.
L'attrice è brava.Mi sembra che l'attrice sia brava.

This chapter treats the subjunctive as a recognition system only. You are not expected to conjugate it independently. You will meet it again as a fully productive system in Volume III. For now, when you want to state your own opinion productively, you may use secondo me or per me followed by the ordinary present tense you already control.

Indirect object pronouns, ci, and ne from Chapter 13 remain fully active and may be recycled naturally throughout this chapter's tasks.

Model Dialogue

Setting: Rita and Paolo have coffee and discuss the film they watched over the weekend.

Paolo Allora, ti è piaciuto il film di sabato? Al-LO-ra, tee eh pya-CHOO-to eel feelm dee SA-ba-to? So, did you like Saturday's film?
Rita Moltissimo! Secondo me era il film più avvincente dell'anno. E a te? Mol-TEES-see-mo! Seh-KON-do meh EH-ra eel feelm pyoo av-veen-CHEN-teh dell-AN-no. Eh a teh? Very much! In my opinion it was the most gripping film of the year. And you?
Paolo Mah, per me era un po' deludente. Mi sembra che la trama sia più lenta di quanto pensassi. Ma, per meh EH-ra oon po deh-loo-DEN-teh. Mee SEM-bra keh la TRA-ma SEE-a pyoo LEN-ta dee KWAN-to pen-SA-see. Well, for me it was a bit disappointing. It seems to me the plot is slower than I expected.
Rita Davvero? Per me era più interessante che lenta. L'attrice principale era bravissima, no? Dav-VEH-ro? Per meh EH-ra pyoo een-teh-reh-SAN-teh keh LEN-ta. Lat-TREE-cheh preen-chee-PA-leh EH-ra bra-VEES-see-ma, no? Really? To me it was more interesting than slow. The lead actress was excellent, wasn't she?
Paolo Su questo hai ragione, era brava. Ma il finale, secondo me, era troppo prevedibile. Soo KWEH-sto ai ra-JO-neh, EH-ra BRA-va. Ma eel fee-NA-leh, seh-KON-do meh, EH-ra TROP-po preh-veh-DEE-bee-leh. On that you're right, she was good. But the ending, in my opinion, was too predictable.
Rita Da una parte capisco, dall'altra penso che valesse la pena vederlo lo stesso. Ho anche letto una recensione online. Da OO-na PAR-teh ka-PEE-sko, dall-AL-tra PEN-so keh va-LEH-seh la PEH-na veh-DER-lo lo STEH-so. O AN-keh LET-to OO-na reh-chen-SYO-neh on-LA-een. On one hand I understand, on the other I think it was worth watching anyway. I also read a review online.
Paolo Ah sì? Cosa diceva? Riassumimela, se puoi. A see? KO-za dee-CHEH-va? Ree-as-SOO-mee-meh-la, seh PWOY. Oh really? What did it say? Summarize it for me, if you can.
The critic thinks the direction is the strongest point of the film, but says the ending is the weakest point. In short, an opinion similar to yours!

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What did Rita think of the film overall? What did Paolo think?
  2. What did they agree on, and what did they disagree about?
  3. What does the online critic's opinion have in common with Paolo's?

Guided Practice

Esercizio 1 — Complete with the correct comparative or superlative form:

  1. Questo film è ______ interessante ______ l'altro. (more ... than)
  2. Per me, è il film ______ noioso ______ visti quest'anno. (the most ... of the ones)
  3. La trama non è ______ complicata ______ pensavo. (as ... as)

Esercizio 2 — Choose the appropriate opinion formula and complete the sentence:

  1. ______, il finale era troppo prevedibile. (in my opinion)
  2. ______ l'attrice era la parte migliore del film. (for me)

Esercizio 3 — Recognition only: identify the verb form and explain why it appears:

  1. Penso che il film sia interessante. → Identify the subjunctive form and the ordinary present-tense form it replaces.
  2. Mi sembra che la trama sia lenta. → Identify the subjunctive form and the ordinary present-tense form it replaces.

Esercizio 4 — Support each opinion with a reason and an example:

  1. Secondo me, il film era avvincente perché...
  2. Per me il finale era deludente, per esempio...

Listening Practice

Ask an instructor, study partner, or fluent Italian speaker to read the passage below aloud, at a natural pace, twice.

If no speakers are available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Italian speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Al bar — At the café:
"Allora, com'è andato il fine settimana?" "Bene, ho visto un film con Rita. A lei è piaciuto moltissimo, secondo lei era il più avvincente dell'anno." "E a te?" "Mah, per me era più lento del previsto, e il finale era troppo prevedibile. Però l'attrice era davvero brava, su questo non ho dubbi." "Quindi non siete d'accordo su tutto." "Esatto, ma va bene così. Da una parte capisco il suo punto di vista, dall'altra resto della mia opinione."

Compito di ascolto — Listening task:

QuestionAnswer
What did Rita think of the film?______
What two criticisms does the speaker make?______
What do they agree on?______

Speaking Practice

Pratica controllata — Controlled practice: comparison and opinion formulas

With a partner, take turns comparing two familiar things (two restaurants, two films, two neighborhoods) using at least one comparative and one superlative structure.

Compito comunicativo — Communicative task: discussing a shared experience

In pairs, discuss a film, show, or book you have both experienced (or invent one). Each partner states an opinion with secondo me or per me, gives a reason, and responds to the other's view — agreeing or tactfully disagreeing.

Pratica da solo — Solo alternative

Record yourself giving a short supported opinion about a film or book, including at least one comparison and one reason clause.

Reading Practice

Read the review below aloud, sounding out each Italian word slowly.

Recensione online — Online review
Un film con luci e ombre. La regia è senza dubbio il punto più forte del film: le immagini sono più belle di quanto ci si aspetti da una produzione così piccola. L'attrice principale è bravissima e rende il personaggio credibile dall'inizio alla fine. Il problema, però, è il finale: sembra più adatto a un altro tipo di storia, e molti spettatori lo troveranno prevedibile. Nel complesso, è un film che vale la pena vedere, ma non è il capolavoro che alcuni dicono.
A film with light and shadow. The direction is without doubt the strongest point of the film: the images are more beautiful than one would expect from such a small production. The lead actress is excellent and makes the character believable from beginning to end. The problem, however, is the ending: it seems more suited to a different kind of story, and many viewers will find it predictable. Overall, it's a film worth seeing, but not the masterpiece some say it is.

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. According to the critic, what is the strongest point of the film?
  2. What is the weakest point?
  3. Find one comparative structure in the review and explain what is being compared.

Writing Workshop

Write a short, supported recommendation about a film, show, restaurant, or place you know.

Compito di scrittura — Writing task: Write five to seven sentences. Include: an opinion formula such as secondo me or penso che; at least one comparative or superlative structure; a reason clause with perché, siccome, or dato che; at least one example introduced with per esempio; and a clear final recommendation.

  1. State your opinion. Open with secondo me or per me.
  2. Compare. Use a comparative or superlative structure.
  3. Give a reason. Explain why you feel this way.
  4. Give an example. Support your reason with a specific detail.
  5. Recommend. State clearly whether you recommend it and to whom.

Lista di controllo — Editing checklist:

  • The opinion is stated clearly with an appropriate formula.
  • At least one comparative or superlative structure is used correctly.
  • The reason and example genuinely support the stated opinion.
  • Accents, apostrophes, and double consonants follow standard Italian spelling.
  • The recommendation at the end is clear and direct.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — disagreeing with tact

In many everyday Italian conversations, disagreement is softened with phrases like da una parte... dall'altra... or su questo hai ragione, ma..., which acknowledge the other person's point before offering a different view. Learners should avoid stating disagreement as a flat contradiction, which can come across as more confrontational than intended.

Culture in Context — media conversation as everyday social life

Discussing films, shows, and books is common social conversation across many Italian-speaking contexts, though what people watch and how they discuss it varies by generation, region, and personal taste. The example in this chapter reflects one everyday conversation and should not be taken as representing all Italian media habits.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — using che instead of di in comparisons

Error: Writing È più interessante che l'altro film when comparing with a noun.

Correction: È più interessante dell'altro film. Use di before a noun or pronoun; reserve che for comparing two adjectives, verbs, or phrases directly.

Common Mistake — producing the subjunctive too early

Error: Attempting to build sia, venga, or similar forms independently before this system has been formally taught.

Correction: Recognize these forms when you read or hear them, but state your own opinions productively with secondo me or per me followed by the ordinary present tense, such as secondo me, il film è interessante.

Common Mistake — disagreeing too bluntly

Error: Writing Non è vero, il film era noioso, a flat contradiction with no softening.

Correction: Capisco il tuo punto, ma per me era un po' noioso, which acknowledges the other view before offering a different one.

Chapter Summary

This chapter completed Unit III by consolidating comparatives and superlatives, developing reason clauses into fuller supported opinions, teaching everyday opinion formulas, and introducing the subjunctive after opinion expressions as a recognition-only system. You followed Rita and Paolo as they compared notes on a film they both watched, agreeing on some points and tactfully disagreeing on others, and read an online review that echoed part of Paolo's view.

Chapter Review

Parte A — Comprensione (Comprehension)

1. Return to the model dialogue and answer in English:

  1. What did Rita and Paolo disagree about?
  2. What did the online critic think was the strongest and weakest part of the film?

Parte B — Grammatica (Grammar)

1. Complete with the correct comparative form: Il libro è ______ interessante ______ il film. (more ... than)

2. Choose an opinion formula and complete: ______, l'attrice era la parte migliore. (in my opinion)

3. Identify the subjunctive form in Penso che il film sia interessante and the indicative form it replaces.

Parte C — Lettura (Reading)

1. Return to the online review and answer:

  1. What does the critic say about the director's work?
  2. Does the critic recommend the film overall?

Parte D — Scrittura (Writing)

1. Write a short, supported recommendation following the writing workshop steps above.

Parte E — Parlato (Speaking)

1. With a partner or recorded solo, discuss a shared experience, stating and supporting an opinion and responding tactfully to a different view.

Practical Performance Task

Chapter 14 Performance Task — Opinioni, Media e Spiegazioni

Discuss and Recommend

Complete the following four connected tasks in order.

  1. Listen to the café passage and complete the listening table.
  2. Read the online review and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Write a short, supported recommendation, following the writing workshop steps.
  4. Speak by discussing a shared experience with a partner or recording a solo supported opinion.
CriterionWhat is assessed
Opinion formulasThe learner uses secondo me, per me, or a related formula correctly.
ComparisonThe learner uses at least one comparative or superlative structure accurately.
Reasons and examplesThe learner supports an opinion with a reason clause and a relevant example.
Subjunctive recognitionThe learner identifies the subjunctive after opinion expressions without being required to produce it.
Tact and registerThe learner disagrees, when applicable, in a softened and appropriate way.

This task consolidates comparison and reason clauses and introduces the subjunctive after opinion expressions as a recognition system only. It does not require productive subjunctive control.

Looking Ahead

Cosa sai fare ora — What you can do now

You can now express and support an opinion, compare things using comparative and superlative structures, summarize a short media text, and recognize the subjunctive after opinion expressions in context. This completes Unit III, Partecipare alla comunità, bringing together health, formal communication, service problems, and now opinion and media into a single set of community-participation skills.

Andando avanti: Capitolo 15 — Continuing on: Chapter 15

B verifica 3: Partecipare alla comunità integrates everything from Chapters 11 through 14 into a single checkpoint: asking for help and giving advice, writing a formal request, resolving a service problem, and discussing an opinion — all with appropriate tu/Lei register. No new grammar, vocabulary, or systems are introduced; the chapter measures your readiness to move into Unit IV and independent B1 communication.
