Verifica 1: Narrazione e punto di vista
Chapter Overview and Objectives
The building meeting has finally arrived. Elena, Marco, and Chiara bring the note they promised to write, and now they must put everything from the last four chapters to work at once: a connected personal update, a clear narration of how the courtyard situation developed, a supported opinion about what should happen, and an explanation of causes, consequences, and likely outcomes. This chapter introduces no new grammar. Instead, it consolidates the narration, stance, and explanation skills of Unit I into a single integrated performance, so that you can measure how far your Italian has come since Chapter 1. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Give a connected personal or professional update without reverting to isolated A2 sentences.
- Narrate a past event using completed action, background description, and at least one prior-event reference with trapassato prossimo.
- State and support an opinion using controlled congiuntivo presente frames.
- Explain a real situation using cause-result connectors and at least one real conditional statement.
- Interpret short narrative, opinion, and explanatory texts and identify their key language features.
- Write a coherent paragraph that moves between narration, stance, and explanation.
Communication Scenario
The building meeting is underway. The administrator has invited residents to share their views on the courtyard cost estimate before the vote. Elena, Marco, and Chiara take turns speaking, drawing on everything they have practiced since Chapter 1.
- You will read and listen to Elena, Marco, and Chiara at the meeting, moving between personal update, narration, opinion, and explanation.
- You will then complete an integrated task of your own: a connected update, a short narrative, a supported opinion, and a cause-result explanation with a real conditional statement.
Where This Chapter Fits
Chapter 5 closes Unit I. It does not introduce any new productive language system. Instead, it brings together the four communicative jobs you have practiced separately: reconnecting and updating (Chapter 1), narrating with precision (Chapter 2), stating and supporting an opinion (Chapter 3), and explaining cause, consequence, and real conditions (Chapter 4).
Coming Into This Chapter
You closed Chapter 4 able to explain a real situation using cause-result connectors and the real conditional with se plus the present indicative.
In This Chapter
You will combine personal update, past narration, supported opinion, and cause-result explanation in a single connected performance, without any new grammar target.
Looking Forward
Chapter 6 opens Unit II, Media e società, turning your attention to understanding and summarizing media texts and public information.
Core Vocabulary Review
This review chapter introduces no new productive vocabulary. The table below recycles one key item from each of Chapters 1 through 4 so you can check that it remains active and usable.
| Italian | English | From |
|---|---|---|
| l'aggiornamento | the update | Chapter 1 |
| a un certo punto | at a certain point | Chapter 2 |
| mi sembra che | it seems to me that | Chapter 3 |
| di conseguenza | as a result | Chapter 4 |
| il preventivo | the cost estimate | Chapter 4 |
| la riunione di condominio | the building meeting | Chapters 1–4 |
Pronunciation Focus
A meeting turn moves through several communicative jobs in a row: an update, a narration, an opinion, an explanation. Practice keeping your stress and phrase grouping steady as you shift between them, rather than slowing down or flattening your intonation only because the grammar has changed underneath you. The connectors themselves — quindi, però, dato che — still carry the stress patterns you practiced in Chapters 1 through 4.
5.1 Review: stress and connected-speech grouping
Reread the model dialogue below aloud, pausing briefly at each comma and letting your pitch fall clearly at the end of each speaker's turn, exactly as you practiced with the cause-result connectors in Chapter 4.
5.2 Review: accent and apostrophe control
As you write your own integrated paragraph later in this chapter, check every accented word and every elision (l'amministratore, un'opinione, dov'è) with the same care you used in earlier chapters.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns Review
Chapter 2 developed the contrast between passato prossimo (completed action), imperfetto (background and description), and trapassato prossimo (an event that had already happened before another past event): Quando è arrivato il preventivo, l'amministratore aveva già parlato con due imprese. This chapter does not introduce any new past-tense form; it asks you to keep all three working together in a single narration.
Chapter 3 introduced congiuntivo presente after high-frequency stance expressions such as penso che, credo che, è importante che, and mi sembra che: Penso che il preventivo sia ragionevole. This chapter reuses these same scheduled frames. It does not add new triggers or new subjunctive tenses.
Chapter 4 developed dato che and siccome for a known cause, perciò, quindi, and di conseguenza for a consequence, and the real conditional with se plus the present indicative for a likely outcome: Se il preventivo viene approvato, i lavori iniziano a maggio. All three systems remain active and productive in this chapter exactly as scheduled in Chapter 4.
This review chapter introduces no new productive language system. It does not require the hypothetical conditional pattern with congiuntivo imperfetto, a complete subjunctive system, or productive passato remoto. Those systems remain scheduled for later chapters.
Model Dialogue
Setting: The building meeting. The administrator has invited residents to comment before the vote. Elena, Marco, and Chiara speak in turn.
Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:
- What had the administrator already done before the residents fully understood the urgency of the problem?
- According to Chiara, why does she think the estimate is reasonable?
- What does Elena recommend, and what reasoning does she give?
Guided Practice
Esercizio 1 — Complete each sentence with the correct past-tense form (passato prossimo, imperfetto, or trapassato prossimo):
- Quando il preventivo ______ (arrivare), l'amministratore ______ (parlare) già con due imprese.
- Mentre Marco ______ (leggere) la nota, Chiara ______ (fare) domande.
- Elena ______ (capire) subito che il problema ______ (essere) urgente.
Esercizio 2 — Complete each sentence with the correct congiuntivo presente form:
- Penso che il preventivo ______ (essere) ragionevole.
- Mi sembra che i costi ______ (riflettere) lavori seri.
- Credo che questa ______ (essere) la decisione giusta.
Esercizio 3 — Combine each pair of sentences using a cause-result connector or a real conditional with se:
- I costi riflettono lavori seri. Il preventivo è ragionevole.
- Aspettiamo ancora. Il problema peggiora.
- I residenti votano a favore stasera. I lavori possono iniziare a maggio.
Esercizio 4 — Write four to five sentences that move from a personal update, to a short narration, to an opinion, to a cause-result explanation, about a decision you have recently made or observed.
Listening Practice
Ask an instructor, study partner, or fluent Italian speaker to read the passage below aloud, at a natural pace, twice.
If no speakers are available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, slowly at first, then at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Italian speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.
Il voto — The vote:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What had the administrator already done before receiving the final estimate? | ______ |
| Why do many residents think the estimate is fair? | ______ |
| What happens if the vote passes tonight? | ______ |
Speaking Practice
Pratica controllata — Controlled practice: four-part chain
With a partner, take turns building a short four-part spoken chain about a familiar topic: a personal update, a brief narration with trapassato prossimo, a supported opinion with congiuntivo presente, and a cause-result explanation with a real conditional.
Compito comunicativo — Communicative task: at the meeting
Role-play a short exchange at a building or community meeting in which each speaker gives an update, narrates a relevant past event, states an opinion, and explains a likely consequence.
Portfolio orale — Oral portfolio: my Unit I performance
Give a three-to-four-minute integrated talk that moves through a personal update, a past narrative with clear sequence and background, a supported opinion, and a cause-result explanation with a real conditional outcome.
Reading Practice
Read the short meeting summary below, written by the building administrator after the vote.
Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:
- What had some residents already done before the vote took place?
- Why did most residents think the estimate was reasonable?
- Identify one past-tense form, one opinion expression, and one cause-result connector in the minutes.
Writing Workshop
Write an integrated paragraph that reviews the four communicative jobs of Unit I.
Compito di scrittura — Writing task: Write ten to twelve sentences about a real or invented decision (yours, your family's, or a community's). Include: a brief personal update or framing statement, a short narration using at least one trapassato prossimo, a supported opinion using a scheduled congiuntivo presente frame, and a cause-result explanation with at least one connector and one real conditional sentence.
- Frame the situation. Briefly update the reader on the context.
- Narrate the background. Include one prior event with trapassato prossimo.
- State your opinion. Use a scheduled frame such as penso che or mi sembra che.
- Explain cause and consequence. Use a connector such as dato che or di conseguenza.
- Describe a likely outcome. Use se plus the present indicative in both clauses.
Lista di controllo — Editing checklist:
- Past-tense forms are used correctly, including at least one trapassato prossimo.
- The congiuntivo presente form is correct after a scheduled opinion trigger.
- A cause-result connector and a real conditional sentence with se both appear.
- Accents, apostrophes, and double consonants are checked throughout.
- Commas are placed correctly around fronted subordinate clauses.
Culture and Communication
In many Italian building and community meetings, residents are expected to wait for a turn to speak and to acknowledge the previous speaker's point before adding their own, even when they disagree. This pattern recurs across Elena, Marco, and Chiara's exchanges throughout Unit I.
Il verbale, the written minutes of a building meeting, typically summarizes the discussion and the outcome in a more formal, document-based register than the spoken discussion itself, even when reporting the same events.
Common Mistakes
Error: Writing Quando è arrivato il preventivo, l'amministratore ha parlato già con due imprese to describe an event that happened before another past event.
Correction: Quando è arrivato il preventivo, l'amministratore aveva già parlato con due imprese uses trapassato prossimo because the conversations with the companies happened before the estimate arrived.
Error: Writing Penso che il preventivo è ragionevole.
Correction: Penso che il preventivo sia ragionevole uses congiuntivo presente because penso che is one of this volume's scheduled subjunctive triggers.
Error: Cramming a past-tense contrast, an opinion, and a real conditional into a single overloaded sentence.
Correction: Keep each communicative job in its own sentence or short group of sentences, exactly as Elena, Marco, and Chiara do in the model dialogue, and let connectors link them clearly.
Chapter Summary
This chapter introduced no new grammar. It consolidated the narration, stance, and explanation systems of Chapters 1 through 4: connected personal update, past-tense contrast including trapassato prossimo, controlled congiuntivo presente in opinion, and cause-result connectors with the real conditional. Elena, Marco, and Chiara brought all of this together at the building meeting, where the courtyard renovation was finally put to a vote.

Practical Performance Task
Chapter 5 Performance Task — Verifica 1: Narrazione e punto di vista
La riunione di condominio — The Building Meeting
Complete the following connected tasks in order.
- Listen to the meeting passage and complete the listening table.
- Read the meeting minutes and answer the comprehension questions, identifying one past-tense form, one opinion expression, and one cause-result connector.
- Speak by giving a three-to-four-minute integrated talk moving through update, narration, opinion, and explanation.
- Write an integrated paragraph using at least one trapassato prossimo, one scheduled congiuntivo presente frame, one cause-result connector, and one real conditional sentence.
| Criterion | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Connected personal update | The learner frames the situation clearly without reverting to isolated A2 sentences. |
| Past narration | The learner narrates a past event with sequence, background, and at least one prior-event reference. |
| Supported opinion | The learner states and supports an opinion using a scheduled congiuntivo presente frame. |
| Cause-result explanation | The learner explains cause and consequence and produces a correct real conditional sentence. |
| Integration | The four communicative jobs are connected coherently rather than presented as separate, disconnected sentences. |
| Mechanics | Accents, apostrophes, double consonants, and comma placement are applied accurately. |
This task requires no new grammar target beyond what was authorized in Chapters 1 through 4. It does not require the hypothetical conditional pattern, a complete subjunctive system, or productive passato remoto.
Answer Key
Model Dialogue — Comprehension
- The administrator had already spoken with two different companies before the residents understood how urgent the problem was.
- Chiara thinks the estimate is reasonable because the costs reflect serious work rather than simple temporary repairs. Elena recommends voting in favor tonight, reasoning that waiting will only make the problem and the costs worse.
- See items above.
Guided Practice
Listening
- Before receiving the final estimate, the administrator had already consulted two different companies.
- Many residents think the estimate is fair because the costs correspond to serious work rather than simple repairs.
- If the vote passes tonight, the work can begin in May and finish before summer.
Reading — Comprehension
- Some residents had already expressed their opinions in writing before the vote took place.
- Most residents thought the estimate was reasonable because the costs correspond to necessary work.
- Example: avevano già espresso (trapassato prossimo); il preventivo sembra ragionevole (opinion expression); di conseguenza (cause-result connector).
Chapter Review — Parte B
- è arrivato / aveva parlato
- sia
- Se aspettiamo ancora, il problema peggiora.
Looking Ahead
Cosa sai fare ora — What you can do now
You can now give a connected update, narrate a past event with sequence and background, state and support an opinion, and explain cause, consequence, and real conditions — and you can move between all four in a single coherent performance. This completes Unit I, Narrazione e punto di vista.
