Ambiente, tecnologia e futuro

Volume III, Chapter 17: Environment, Technology, and the Future · Speak and Write Italian: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Overview and Objectives

Nonna Rosa's memoir is still on the table between them, but the conversation has drifted somewhere new. Marco's engineering course has assigned a short presentation on renewable energy, and he wants to talk it through before he writes anything down. Elena points out that the same uncertainty that shaped their grandparents' letters — not knowing what tomorrow would bring — is exactly what a text about climate projections or new technology has to express in a different key: not memory, but prediction. Chapter 17 moves the group from looking backward to looking forward, using future and future-perfect forms, probability language, and impersonal explanatory structures to discuss environment, technology, and change. By the end of Chapter 17, you will be able to:

  1. Understand a general-audience explanation of an environmental or technological topic.
  2. Use future and future perfect forms to make projections about likely developments.
  3. Express degrees of probability and uncertainty using future and modal forms.
  4. Summarize the advantages, risks, and consequences of a future trend.
  5. Read an article containing data, percentages, and examples with accurate comprehension.
  6. Write a clear explanatory text on a future-oriented topic for a general audience.

Communication Scenario

Marco has to give a short presentation next week on renewable energy in Italy, and he is nervous about sounding too technical or too vague. Chiara suggests they treat it like any other explanation: state what is known, project what is likely, and be honest about what remains uncertain. Elena, who has just spent an afternoon reading about a smart-home app her cousin uses, adds that technology deserves the same treatment — neither utopian nor alarmist, just carefully weighed.

  1. You will read and listen to Chiara, Marco, and Elena talk through Marco's presentation topic before he drafts it.
  2. You will then read a general-audience article about a future trend, discuss its risks and benefits, and write your own explanatory text projecting how a technology or environmental issue may develop.

Where This Chapter Fits

Chapter 17 continues Unit IV, Testi complessi e autonomia, moving from the literary-adjacent reading of Chapter 16 toward public-facing explanatory texts. Future and future perfect forms, introduced formulaically in earlier volumes, are developed here for projection and probability. Impersonal and passive-like structures, active since Chapter 6, expand into explanatory writing about environment and technology. Nothing from Unit III is abandoned: cause-consequence connectors, concession, and problem-solution discourse all support this chapter's tasks.

Coming Into This Chapter

You read and interpreted a literary-adjacent memoir excerpt, recognized passato remoto, and wrote a reflective response connecting a text to personal experience.

In This Chapter

You will discuss environment and technology, make projections with future and future perfect forms, express probability, and write a general-audience explanatory text.

Looking Forward

Chapter 18, Dibattiti e presentazioni, moves the group toward structured presentations, debate, and responding to objections in front of an audience.

Receptive review only: technical and scientific terms such as emissioni and algoritmo support comprehension of general-audience texts but are not assessed as productive scientific vocabulary.

Pronunciation Focus

Language Focus — intonation for prediction and uncertainty

Predictions and hedged claims carry a distinct rising-then-settling intonation in Italian, especially around expressions like probabilmente and è probabile che. Practice the contrast between a flat factual statement, Le auto elettriche costano meno, and a hedged projection, Probabilmente, tra dieci anni, le auto elettriche costeranno meno, letting the voice rise slightly on the adverb and settle by the end of the sentence.

17.1 Stress in technical loanwords and abstract nouns

Many technology and environment words are recognizable loanwords or abstract nouns with predictable but easy-to-miss stress, such as tecnologia, sostenibilità, and intelligenza artificiale. Practice these multi-syllable words slowly, keeping vowels clear and stress consistent, before using them in connected explanation.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter develops future and future perfect forms for projection and expands impersonal/passive-like structures for explanatory writing. It does not introduce a new productive verb paradigm; both systems have been active since earlier volumes and are extended here into new communicative uses.

Developed — future and future perfect for projection

Tra vent'anni, molte case avranno pannelli solari. (In twenty years, many houses will have solar panels.) Quando avremo sviluppato batterie migliori, i costi diminuiranno. (When we have developed better batteries, costs will decrease.) The future perfect (futuro anteriore) expresses an action that will be completed before another future action or point in time. Use it to sequence two future events with precision, not only to mark distance in time.

Developed — probability with future and modal forms

Sarà anche una buona idea, ma costerà parecchio. (It may well be a good idea, but it will probably cost a lot.) The future can express present speculation as well as future time, especially with adverbs like probabilmente and forse, or with dovere in constructions such as dovrebbe funzionare (it should work). Distinguish this speculative future from ordinary future-time reference through context and adverb use.

Review and expansion — impersonal and passive-like structures (Chapter 6, Chapter 7)

Si prevede un aumento della domanda di energia pulita. (An increase in demand for clean energy is expected.) Le nuove tecnologie vengono introdotte gradualmente. (New technologies are introduced gradually.) Impersonal si and passive-like venire constructions keep explanatory writing neutral and focused on the process rather than the actor, which suits general-audience texts about environment and technology.

Also active throughout, as in every Unit III and Unit IV chapter: cause-consequence and concession connectors (Chapter 4, Chapter 11), congiuntivo presente after opinion and evaluation (Chapter 3, Chapter 11), and relative clauses for precise description (Chapter 8, Chapter 12).

Model Dialogue: La presentazione di Marco

Setting: Chiara, Marco, and Elena meet at a café, and Marco has brought his laptop with a half-finished slide.

Marco Devo parlare di energie rinnovabili per dieci minuti e non so da dove cominciare. Ho troppi dati e poche idee chiare. DEH-vo par-LA-reh dee eh-ner-JEE-eh ree-no-va-BEE-lee per DYEH-chee mee-NOO-tee eh non so da DOH-veh ko-meen-CHA-reh. o TROP-pee DA-tee eh PO-keh EE-deh KYA-reh. I have to talk about renewable energy for ten minutes and I don't know where to start. I have too much data and too few clear ideas.
Chiara Comincia da cosa sappiamo davvero, poi passa a cosa probabilmente succederà. Non devi prevedere tutto con certezza. ko-MEEN-cha da KO-za sap-PYA-mo dav-VEH-ro, poy PAS-sa a KO-za pro-ba-beel-MEN-teh soo-cheh-deh-RAH. non DEH-vee preh-veh-DEH-reh TOOT-to kon cher-TEZ-za. Start with what we really know, then move to what will probably happen. You don't have to predict everything with certainty.
Marco Giusto. Quindi potrei dire: entro il 2030 molte città avranno ridotto le emissioni, ma non tutte allo stesso modo. JOOS-to. KWEEN-dee po-TREH-ee DEE-reh: EN-tro eel dwe-MEE-la-TREN-ta MOL-teh CHEE-tah a-VRAN-no ree-DOT-to leh eh-MEES-syo-nee, ma non TOOT-teh AL-lo STES-so MO-do. Right. So I could say: by 2030 many cities will have reduced emissions, but not all in the same way.
Elena Mi piace. Potresti aggiungere che si prevede un forte aumento dei pannelli solari sui tetti delle case private. mee PYA-cheh. po-TRES-tee ad-DJOON-geh-reh keh see preh-VEH-deh oon FOR-teh ow-MEN-to day pan-NEL-lee so-LA-ree soo-ee TET-tee DEL-leh KA-zeh pree-VA-teh. I like that. You could add that a strong increase in solar panels on private homes is expected.
Marco E dovrei anche dire onestamente che ci saranno dei rischi — il costo iniziale, per esempio. Non voglio sembrare troppo ottimista. eh do-VREH-ee AN-keh DEE-reh o-nes-ta-MEN-teh keh chee sa-RAN-no day REES-kee — eel KOS-to ee-nee-TSYA-leh, per eh-ZEM-pyo. non VO-lyo sem-BRA-reh TROP-po ot-tee-MEES-ta. And I should also honestly say that there will be risks — the initial cost, for example. I don't want to seem too optimistic.

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is Marco's presentation topic, and what problem does he describe?
  2. What advice does Chiara give him about structuring the talk?
  3. What risk does Marco decide he should mention, and why?

Guided Practice

Esercizio 1 — Complete each sentence with the correct future or future perfect form of the verb in parentheses:

  1. Tra dieci anni, molte auto ______ (essere) elettriche.
  2. Quando gli scienziati ______ (sviluppare) batterie più efficienti, i prezzi scenderanno.
  3. Probabilmente il governo ______ (investire) di più nelle energie rinnovabili.

Esercizio 2 — Rewrite each sentence using si impersonale or a passive-like venire construction:

  1. Gli scienziati prevedono un aumento delle temperature. → ______
  2. Le aziende introducono nuove tecnologie ogni anno. → ______

Esercizio 3 — Choose the sentence that best expresses probability rather than certainty:

  1. a) Il progetto costerà troppo.   b) Il progetto costa troppo.
  2. a) Dovrebbe funzionare, ma non è sicuro.   b) Funziona sempre senza problemi.

Esercizio 4 — Respond to the following prompts in one or two sentences each, using a future or probability expression:

  1. What is one advantage of renewable energy that you expect to become more important?
  2. What is one risk of new technology that concerns you?

Listening Practice

Ask an instructor, study partner, or fluent Italian speaker to read the passage below aloud, at a clear, moderate explanatory pace, twice.

If no speakers are available, this is a Listening Script for Independent Use. Read it aloud yourself, first slowly, then again at a more natural pace. Any spoken model should be verified by a fluent Italian speaker before being treated as a pronunciation standard.

Un breve annuncio radiofonico sull'energia solare — A short radio announcement about solar energy:

QuestionAnswer
What trend has increased in recent years?______
What are the two advantages mentioned?______
What does the announcement predict will happen once prices fall further?______

Speaking Practice

Pratica controllata — Controlled practice: projecting the future

Take turns completing the sentence Tra dieci anni, probabilmente... with a projection about technology, the environment, or daily life, using a future or future perfect form.

Compito comunicativo — Communicative task: weighing risks and benefits

With a partner, choose a technology (electric cars, artificial intelligence, smart homes, or another example) and discuss its advantages, risks, and likely future development. Support each point with a reason.

Portfolio orale — Oral portfolio: a short informal presentation

Tell a partner, or record yourself giving, a two-minute explanation of a future trend in technology or the environment, including at least one probability expression and one impersonal or passive-like structure.

Reading Practice

Read the general-audience article below. It is written to sound natural for a broad readership; notice how data, percentages, and examples are woven into ordinary explanatory prose rather than presented as technical writing.

Le città del futuro — The Cities of the Future
How will our cities change in the next twenty years? According to various studies, by 2040 about 70% of the world's population will live in urban areas, and this will change the way we think about transportation, energy, and public spaces. It is expected, for example, that the number of electric cars will continue to grow rapidly: in some European countries, already today more than one in three new cars is electric. At the same time, many cities are investing in more efficient public transport networks, because once the streets have become too crowded, public transport will probably remain the only practical solution. Smart technology — sensors, apps, automated systems — will probably be integrated into almost every aspect of urban life, from traffic lights to waste management. Not everything, however, will change at the same pace: smaller cities and rural areas will probably adopt these technologies more slowly, and it will remain an important challenge to ensure that the benefits are not concentrated only in large urban centers.

Domande di comprensione — Comprehension questions:

  1. What percentage of the world's population is expected to live in urban areas by 2040?
  2. Why does the article say public transport will probably remain necessary?
  3. What challenge does the article identify regarding smaller cities and rural areas?

Writing Workshop

Write a general-audience explanatory text projecting how a technology or environmental issue may develop.

Compito di scrittura — Writing task: Write an explanatory text of two to three paragraphs about a future trend in technology or the environment. In the first paragraph, state what is currently known or observed, using at least one impersonal or passive-like structure. In the second paragraph, make specific projections using future and future perfect forms, including at least one probability expression. If you wish, close with one or two sentences weighing an advantage against a risk, using a concession or contrast connector.

  1. State what is known. Describe the current situation using impersonal or passive-like structures where natural.
  2. Project forward. Make specific predictions with future and future perfect forms and at least one probability expression.
  3. Weigh the picture. Briefly balance an advantage against a risk or limitation.
  4. Edit. Check verb forms, agreement, connectors, accents, apostrophes, and punctuation throughout.

Lista di controllo — Editing checklist:

  • The text states a current situation before making any projection.
  • At least one future or future perfect form is used accurately.
  • At least one probability expression is included.
  • At least one impersonal or passive-like structure appears in the explanation.
  • Accents, apostrophes, and punctuation are checked throughout.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — environmental debate across regions and generations

Discussions of environment and technology in Italy, as elsewhere, vary considerably by region, generation, and institutional context; a young urban professional, a rural farmer, and a national policymaker may weigh the same trend quite differently, and a course should avoid presenting any single viewpoint as the universal Italian perspective.

Culture in Context — public explanation and hedged claims

Italian public communication about science, technology, and policy commonly hedges claims with expressions like si prevede and probabilmente rather than stating outcomes as certain; recognizing this pattern helps learners read general-audience texts more accurately and avoid overstating certainty in their own writing.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake — stating projections as certainties

Error: presenting a future trend as guaranteed fact, such as Nel 2040 tutte le auto sono elettriche.

Correction: Si prevede che entro il 2040 la maggior parte delle nuove auto sarà elettrica. Use future forms and probability expressions to signal that a projection, not a settled fact, is being described.

Common Mistake — confusing future and future perfect

Error: using the simple future where sequencing two future events requires the future perfect, such as Quando svilupperemo batterie migliori, i prezzi scenderanno subito dopo when the development must be complete first.

Correction: Quando avremo sviluppato batterie migliori, i prezzi scenderanno. Use the future perfect for the action that will be completed before the other future action.

Common Mistake — overloading explanatory writing with technical vocabulary

Error: filling a general-audience explanation with untaught technical or scientific terminology to sound more authoritative.

Correction: Keep explanatory writing at this stage in accessible general language; a few receptive technical terms may appear when glossed, but the task does not require specialist scientific accuracy or vocabulary.

Chapter Summary

This chapter moved learners from narrative and literary-adjacent reading toward public-facing explanatory texts about environment and technology. Learners developed future and future perfect forms for projection, expressed probability with future and modal forms, expanded impersonal and passive-like structures for explanatory writing, discussed the risks and benefits of a future trend, and wrote a general-audience explanatory text. No new productive verb paradigm was introduced; existing systems were extended into new communicative use.
