復習2:実用的な一日Unit II Review: A Practical Day

Bringing together home, routine, food, and shopping into one connected day · Speak and Write Japanese: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a home, neighborhood, and daily schedule using ある/いる, location particles, and the polite verb system from Chapters 6–7.
  2. Talk about food, drink, and preferences, and place a simple order, using vocabulary and patterns from Chapter 8.
  3. Describe and compare shopping items using い-adjective and な-adjective forms, より, ほう, and いちばん from Chapter 9.
  4. Read and write practical texts that combine home, routine, food, and shopping information, including maps, schedules, menus, and receipts.
  5. Recognize, read, and handwrite the Unit II kanji from Chapters 6–9 in familiar words, with furigana support.
  6. Select and use the correct counter among つ, 個, and 枚 for common items.
  7. Complete an integrated spoken and written account of one full practical day, connecting home, routine, meals, and a purchase.

Communication Scenario

It is Saturday. Tom is writing a message to a friend back home describing an ordinary day in his new neighborhood: where he lives, what his day looks like, what he eats, and a small purchase he made at a shop near the station. This chapter's tasks follow Tom through that day, and you will complete parallel tasks describing your own day.

  1. This chapter does not introduce new grammar, vocabulary, or kanji. It reviews and connects everything from Chapters 6 through 9.
  2. By the end of the chapter, you will be able to produce one connected spoken account and one connected written account of a full practical day, and you will complete listening and reading tasks that mix all four Unit II topics.
ふくしゅう — Unit II Vocabulary Review

Review Note — Connecting the four topics

Notice how these four vocabulary sets connect naturally: you wake up and move around your home and neighborhood (Chapter 6) according to your daily routine (Chapter 7), you eat and drink at various points in that routine (Chapter 8), and you sometimes stop at a shop to buy something you need (Chapter 9). This chapter's tasks ask you to move between all four domains in a single connected account, the way a real day actually unfolds.

もじ — Script and Kanji Review

Script and Kanji Review

This chapter reviews complete hiragana, katakana, and the Unit II kanji introduced in Chapters 6 through 9. No new characters are introduced. Furigana continues to support every kanji in this chapter's texts.

Script Note — Reading mixed-script texts

The reading and listening passages in this chapter mix all thirty-one Unit II kanji inside ordinary hiragana and katakana text, the way a real message, sign, or receipt would. Furigana marks every kanji from this unit so you can check a reading you are unsure of, but try reading each passage once without looking at the furigana before checking it, to practice recognizing the characters directly.

れんしゅう — Practice: Without looking back at Chapters 6–9, write as many of the thirty-one Unit II kanji as you can from memory, grouped by chapter. Then check your list against the grids above and review any kanji you missed.

Pronunciation Review

Pronunciation Focus — Numbers, times, and prices together

This unit combined several number-based systems: clock time (時/分/半), quantities with the general counter つ, and prices with 円/百/千/万. Say the following aloud, tapping once per mora, and pay attention to the moraic ん and the sound changes in compound numbers:

  • 七時半 — しちじはん — 7:30
  • 三つ — みっつ — three (general counter, with a geminate consonant)
  • 三百円 — さんびゃくえん — 300 yen
  • 千二百円 — せんにひゃくえん — 1,200 yen

Keep phrase-level rhythm smooth across these longer number phrases rather than pausing between each digit.

Grammar Review

No new grammar is introduced in this chapter. The checkpoints below let you confirm control of each Unit II grammar system before the assessment tasks.

Chapter 6 — Existence and location

います/あります, and location phrases with の上/下/中 plus に.

Can you say what is in a room and where it is located, using a position noun and に?

Chapter 7 — Polite verbs and time

Systematic ます/ません, time に, destination に/へ, and frequency adverbs.

Can you describe three things you do on a typical day, in order, with times?

Chapter 8 — Preferences and requests

Nが好きです, object を, ください, and the general counter つ.

Can you order two food items with a quantity, and say what you like or dislike?

Chapter 9 — Description and comparison

い/な-adjective forms, より, ほう, いちばん, and the counters 個/枚.

Can you compare two items and identify the best of three or more?

Review Practice — Mixed Unit II grammar

Complete each sentence with the correct particle, verb form, or adjective form, drawing on any Unit II chapter.

  1. つくえの上__ペンがあります。 (location particle)
  2. まいあさ七時__おきます。 (time particle)
  3. わたしはコーヒー__好きですが、おちゃ__きらいです。 (contrast particle)
  4. このみせのパン__あのみせのパン__安いです。 (comparison)
  5. このかばんは大き__ないです。 (negative form)

Model Dialogue

Setting: Tom calls his friend Priya on the phone on Saturday evening to tell her about his day.

PRIYA トムさん、今日はどうでしたか。 Tom, how was today?
TOM よかったですよ。朝七時におきて、うちのちかくのこうえんをさんぽしました。 It was good. I got up at 7:00 and took a walk in the park near my house.
PRIYA いいですね。あさごはんは何を食べましたか。 Nice. What did you eat for breakfast?
TOM パンとたまごを食べて、おちゃを飲みました。それから、たなかさんとみせへ行きました。 I ate bread and eggs, and drank tea. After that, I went to a shop with Mrs. Tanaka.
PRIYA 何を買いましたか。 What did you buy?
TOM くろいかばんを買いました。あかいかばんよりやすくて、じょうぶでしたから。 I bought a black bag. It was cheaper than the red one, and it was sturdy.
PRIYA いくらでしたか。 How much was it?
TOM 三千円でした。プレゼントにノートも二個買いました。 It was 3,000 yen. I also bought two notebooks as a gift.

ないようりかい — Comprehension questions:

  1. What time did Tom get up, and what did he do first?
  2. What did Tom eat and drink for breakfast?
  3. What did Tom buy, why did he choose it, and how much did it cost?
  4. Identify at least one example each of a location expression, a time expression, a food/preference expression, and a comparison expression in this dialogue.

Guided Practice

タスク1 — Sequence your morning. Write four sentences describing what you did this morning in order, using at least two time expressions and the connector それから.

タスク2 — Combine and connect. Take one sentence about your home, one about your routine, one about food, and one about shopping, and read them aloud as a single connected mini-account.

Listening Assessment

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud at a clear, moderate pace.

きくタスク — Mrs. Tanaka's Saturday

たなかさんのうちはえきのちかくにあります。まいしゅう土曜日に、たなかさんは七時半におきます。それから、こうえんをさんぽして、うちでパンを食べます。十時に、みせへ行きます。みせでくだものとぎゅうにゅうを買います。くだものは高くないです。二百円ぐらいです。それから、たなかさんはあたらしいノートを見ました。あたらしいノートはふるいノートより高いですが、きれいです。たなかさんはあたらしいノートを三個買いました。ぜんぶで千五百円でした。

聞くタスク — Listening task: Complete a chart with four columns labeled Time, Place, Activity, and Item/Price. Fill in each row using information from the passage, then compare your chart with a partner or check it against the passage above.

Speaking Assessment

コントロールされた練習 — Controlled practice: Quick answers

Answer each question with a complete sentence, drawing on any Unit II topic.

  1. あなたのへやに何がありますか。
  2. まいあさ何時におきますか。
  3. あさごはんに何を食べますか。
  4. このノートとあのノートと、どちらのほうが好きですか。

コミュニケーションタスク — Describe your Saturday

With a partner, take turns describing a typical Saturday from morning to evening. Include at least one location expression, one time expression, one food or drink, and one comparison or purchase. Ask your partner at least two follow-up questions.

ひとりでもできる練習 — Solo practice: One connected day

Record yourself giving an eight-to-ten sentence spoken account of one full day: where you live, what you did in order, what you ate or drank, and something you compared or bought.

Reading Assessment

Read the following message and receipt, then answer the questions below.

トムさんのメッセージ — Tom's message to a friend

わたしのうちはえきの近ちかくにあります。まいにち七しち時じに起おきて、八はち時じ半はんに学がっ校こうへ行いきます。金きん曜よう日びに、たなかさんとみせへ行いきました。パンと水みずを買かって、新あたらしいかばんも買かいました。かばんは千せん五ご百ひゃく円えんでした。ふるいかばんより大おおきくて、べんりです。

レシート — Receipt

パン 120円えん
水みず 80円えん
かばん 1500円えん
ごうけい 1700円えん

ないようりかい — Comprehension questions:

  1. Where is Tom's house located?
  2. What time does Tom get up, and what time does he go to school?
  3. What day did Tom go shopping, and who did he go with?
  4. What did Tom buy, and how does the new bag compare to the old one?
  5. Check the receipt: does the total match the sum of the individual items? Show your calculation.

Writing Assessment

In this workshop you will write a connected account of one practical day that draws on all four Unit II chapters.

  1. Plan your day in English first. Note where you live, at least three sequenced activities with times, what you ate or drank, and one item you compared or bought.
  2. Write two to three sentences describing your home or neighborhood. Use at least one location expression with あります or います.
  3. Write three to four sentences describing your routine in order. Use time expressions and the connector それから.
  4. Write one to two sentences about food or drink, using 好きです or a request pattern.
  5. Write two to three sentences describing a comparison or purchase, using an adjective form, より or ほう, a counter, and a price.
  6. Revise and check using the checklist below before finalizing your work.

チェックリスト — Editing checklist:

  • I described my home or neighborhood using あります or います correctly.
  • I sequenced at least three routine activities with accurate time expressions.
  • I used まいにち, ときどき, or a similar frequency word appropriately.
  • I described a food or drink preference or made a request correctly.
  • I compared two items using より or ほう, or identified the best of several with いちばん.
  • I chose an appropriate counter (つ, 個, or 枚) and wrote an accurate price.
  • I used Unit II kanji correctly, with furigana.
  • I ended each sentence with 。 and organized my account in a clear order.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Everyday routines across communities

The daily schedule, meal habits, neighborhood layout, and shopping patterns described in this unit reflect one plausible everyday routine, not a single official Japanese lifestyle. Work hours, meal timing, shopping frequency, and neighborhood design vary widely by region, household, occupation, and generation across Japan. When you describe your own day in Japanese, describe your actual routine rather than assuming it must match a textbook model.

Culture in Context — Talking about your day with others

Sharing small details about an ordinary day, such as what you ate or bought, is a common way to maintain a relationship in many everyday Japanese conversations, whether by phone, in person, or through a written message. Keeping the polite です/ます style you have used throughout this unit remains appropriate for most everyday relationships at this stage of your studies.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Confusing あります and います

Error: *へやにねこがあります。

Correction: へやにねこがいます。 — Use います for people and animals, and あります for objects and things without independent movement.

Common Mistake — Dropping the time particle に

Error: *七時おきます。

Correction: 七時におきます。 — Clock times normally take に before the verb, as taught in Chapter 7.

Common Mistake — Using じゃない with an い-adjective

Error: *安いじゃないです。

Correction: 安くないです。 — As reviewed in Chapter 9, い-adjectives form their negative with くない, never じゃない.

Looking Ahead

いまできること — What you can do now

You can describe your home and neighborhood, sequence a daily routine with times and frequency words, express food and drink preferences and make simple requests, describe and compare shopping items, choose an appropriate counter, and read and write practical mixed-script texts that combine all of these topics into one connected account of a day.

町でChapter 11: Getting Around

Chapter 11 opens Unit III with the language of getting around town: directions, transportation, and movement. You will learn the て-form for the first time and use it to make polite requests, building on the routine, location, and shopping language you have just reviewed as you learn to navigate your neighborhood and city with confidence.
