어디에 있어요?Places and Location
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Use the particle 에 to say where a person, place, or thing exists.
- Use the particle 에서 to say where an action takes place.
- Distinguish between existence location (에) and action location (에서) in context.
- Use common position nouns such as 위, 아래, 안, 밖, 앞, 뒤, and 옆 to describe where something is.
- Build existential sentences with 있어요 and 없어요 using place and position vocabulary.
- Ask and answer questions about where places and objects are located.
- Describe where you do everyday activities, recycling routine verbs from Chapter 7.
Communication Scenario
Layla is new to campus and keeps getting lost. She needs to find the library, ask where her classmates study and eat, and figure out where her belongings are in her own room. Minjun is helping her learn the layout of the building and the vocabulary she needs to describe where things are.
- To help someone find a place, or to say where something is, you need a way to mark existence location and, separately, a way to mark where an action happens — these are two different jobs in Korean, both often translated as English "at" or "in."
- By the end of this chapter you will be able to say where a place or object is located, describe its position relative to other things, and say where you do a daily activity, using only the systems activated through Chapter 8.
Core Vocabulary
The following productive vocabulary supports this chapter's communicative goal: locating places, objects, and actions.
장소 — Places
| Korean | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 도서관 | library | Sino-Korean compound |
| 교실 | classroom | Sino-Korean compound |
| 식당 | restaurant; dining hall | Sino-Korean compound |
| 기숙사 | dormitory | Sino-Korean compound |
| 방 | room | Sino-Korean noun |
| 책상 | desk | native/Sino compound |
| 의자 | chair | Sino-Korean noun |
| 가방 | bag |
위치 명사 — Position nouns
| Korean | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 위 | top; above; on | attaches after 의 or directly after a noun |
| 아래 | bottom; under; below | |
| 안 | inside | |
| 밖 | outside | |
| 앞 | front | |
| 뒤 | back; behind | |
| 옆 | side; next to |
동사 — Action verbs for this chapter
| Dictionary form | Chapter form (-아요/어요) | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 있다 | 있어요 | to exist; to have | existential predicate, recycled from Chapter 3 |
| 없다 | 없어요 | to not exist; to not have | existential predicate, recycled from Chapter 3 |
| 앉다 | 앉아요 | to sit | regular pattern |
| 읽다 | 읽어요 | to read | regular pattern; object usually marked with 을/를 |
Routine verbs from Chapter 7 (공부해요, 일해요, 운동해요, 자요, 씻어요, and others) are recycled throughout this chapter's dialogue, reading, and writing tasks.
Pronunciation Focus
This chapter does not introduce a new sound-change rule. It gives you controlled practice distinguishing the particles 에 and 에서, which are easy to confuse in fast speech, and practice with batchim in 앉아요 and 읽어요.
에 is a single syllable; 에서 adds a second syllable, 서. In connected speech the two can sound similar to a beginner's ear, so listen for the extra syllable and check whether the sentence describes existence (에) or an action (에서).
Read the following words aloud, paying attention to the batchim in 앉아요 and 읽어요.
도서관에 · 교실에서 · 식당에 · 책상 위에 · 가방 안에 · 앉아요 · 읽어요
받침 점검: 앉아요 has a double batchim (ㄵ); only the ㄴ is pronounced before the following vowel. You will study double-batchim patterns formally in a later chapter; for now, simply imitate the pronunciation as modeled.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
문법 1 — Existence location with 에
Communicative purpose: say where a person, place, or thing is located.
You have already used 에 with dates and recurring times. The same particle marks the location of an existential sentence built with 있어요 or 없어요.
- 도서관이 어디에 있어요? Where is the library?
- 책이 책상 위에 있어요. The book is on the desk. 책이 [subject] + 책상 위에 [location] + 있어요 [existential predicate]
- 가방 안에 우산이 없어요. There is no umbrella in the bag.
에 with 있어요/없어요 answers the question "where is it," not "where does something happen." Do not use 에서 in this pattern: say 도서관에 있어요 ("It is at the library"), not 도서관에서 있어요.
문법 2 — Position nouns
Communicative purpose: describe a location more precisely relative to another object.
Position nouns such as 위, 아래, 안, 밖, 앞, 뒤, and 옆 follow a noun and are themselves followed by 에.
| Noun | + position noun | + 에 | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 책상 | 책상 위 | 책상 위에 | on the desk |
| 가방 | 가방 안 | 가방 안에 | inside the bag |
| 교실 | 교실 앞 | 교실 앞에 | in front of the classroom |
- 의자 옆에 가방이 있어요. The bag is next to the chair.
- 기숙사 뒤에 식당이 있어요. The dining hall is behind the dormitory.
Spacing note: a position noun is written as a separate word after the noun it describes (책상 위), and 에 attaches directly to the position noun with no space (책상 위에).
문법 3 — Action location with 에서
Communicative purpose: say where an action happens.
에서 marks the location of an action verb — where you study, eat, read, sit, work, or do anything else. It is not used with existential 있어요/없어요.
- 저는 도서관에서 공부해요. I study at the library. 도서관에서 [action location] + 공부해요 [action verb]
- 친구는 식당에서 밥을 먹어요. My friend eats at the dining hall.
- 저는 교실에서 책을 읽어요. I read a book in the classroom.
Ask yourself whether the sentence's main verb is 있다/없다 (existence) or an action verb (studying, eating, reading, working, and so on). Existence takes 에. Action takes 에서. This single question resolves nearly every 에/에서 choice at this level.
Practice — Building location sentences
- Choose 에 or 에서: 저는 기숙사___ 있어요.
- Choose 에 or 에서: 저는 기숙사___ 쉬어요.
- Write one sentence using a position noun and 있어요.
- Write one sentence using 에서 and a routine verb from Chapter 7.
Model Dialogue
Setting: Layla is looking for the library and asks Minjun for help.
내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:
- Where is the library located?
- Where does Minjun usually study?
- What does Layla say is missing?
- Where does Minjun find it?
Listening
Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following two short passages aloud. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.
제 방 이야기
제 방에 책상이 있어요. 책상 위에 책이 있어요. 책상 아래에 가방이 있어요. 의자 옆에 우산이 있어요. 방 안에 텔레비전이 없어요.
학교 이야기
교실 앞에 식당이 있어요. 교실 뒤에 도서관이 있어요. 저는 교실에서 공부해요. 저는 식당에서 밥을 먹어요. 저는 도서관에서 책을 읽어요.
듣기 과제 — Listening task: Listen and mark each item true or false.
| 문장 | True / False |
|---|---|
| 책상 위에 가방이 있어요. | ______ |
| 의자 옆에 우산이 있어요. | ______ |
| 교실 뒤에 도서관이 있어요. | ______ |
| 저는 도서관에서 밥을 먹어요. | ______ |
받아쓰기 — Dictation: Your partner or instructor reads one existence sentence and one action-location sentence from the passages above, once each at natural speed. Write what you hear in Hangeul.
- (existence-location sentence)
- (action-location sentence)
Reading
Below is a short message that Nurul left for her roommate. Read it and answer the questions below.
메모 — A note
안녕! 저는 지금 도서관에 있어요. 도서관에서 한국어를 공부해요.
제 책상 위에 우유가 있어요. 냉장고 안에도 우유가 있어요.
제 가방은 방 안에 없어요. 의자 옆에 있어요.
저녁에 기숙사에서 만나요!
New item in this passage: 냉장고 (refrigerator) and 우유 (milk), glossed here for comprehension only; full expansion of household vocabulary is not required in this chapter.
내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:
- Where is Nurul right now, and what is she doing there?
- Where is the milk, according to the note?
- Where is Nurul's bag?
- Where does Nurul want to meet in the evening?
Writing Workshop
This chapter's writing task is a short room-and-schedule description, 제 방과 제 하루 ("My Room and My Day"), describing where your things are and where you do your daily activities.
- Describe your room. Write two or three existence sentences using 에, 있어요/없어요, and at least one position noun.
- State where you study. Use 에서 with a routine verb from Chapter 7.
- State where you eat or rest. Use another 에서 sentence with a different action verb.
- Include one 도 sentence. Recycle the inclusion particle from Chapter 7 to say that another place or person shares one of your habits.
- Revise. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
체크리스트 — Editing checklist:
- 에 is used only with 있어요/없어요 (existence), not with action verbs.
- 에서 is used only with action verbs, not with 있어요/없어요.
- Position nouns (위, 아래, 안, 밖, 앞, 뒤, 옆) are spaced correctly and followed directly by 에.
- Earlier systems (은/는, 이/가, 을/를, -아요/어요, 안, 도, 하다 verbs, frequency adverbs) are still used correctly where they appear.
- No sentence relies on grammar not yet activated (Chapters 9 and beyond).
Speaking Practice
통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 에 or 에서?
Working with a partner or alone, take turns reading a sentence prompt (existence or action) aloud and completing it with the correct particle: 도서관___ 있어요; 도서관___ 공부해요; 식당___ 밥을 먹어요; 방___ 텔레비전이 없어요.
의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 우리 교실 지도
Work with a partner. Take turns asking where three classroom objects are (책, 가방, 의자, and so on) and answering with a position noun. Then ask each other where you usually do one daily activity, using 에서.
- 가방이 어디에 있어요?
- 책이 어디에 있어요?
- 어디에서 공부해요?
- 어디에서 밥을 먹어요?
혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative
Record yourself describing your room, including at least one position noun and one existence sentence, then describing where you do two daily activities using 에서. Listen back and check your particle choice against the Grammar section.
Culture and Communication
Many South Korean university students study on campuses where classrooms, dining halls, dormitories, and libraries are within walking distance of one another, and describing where a building is located relative to another is common everyday conversation for new students.
Libraries and 24-hour study spaces are widely used by South Korean students, and asking a classmate 어디에서 공부해요? ("Where do you study?") is ordinary small talk, not an unusual or overly personal question.
Building names, campus layouts, and available shared spaces vary widely across schools in South Korea and among diaspora communities. The places named in this chapter reflect commonly used campus vocabulary rather than one fixed campus design.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: 저는 도서관에서 있어요.
Correction: 저는 도서관에 있어요. — 있어요/없어요 is an existential predicate and takes 에, not 에서.
Error: 저는 도서관에 공부해요.
Correction: 저는 도서관에서 공부해요. — an action verb needs the action-location particle 에서.
Error: 책이 책상에 있어요. (when the intended meaning is specifically "on" the desk)
Correction: 책이 책상 위에 있어요. — 책상에 alone is understandable but does not specify "on"; add 위 when the position matters.
Error: 책상위에
Correction: 책상 위에 — the position noun is a separate word from the noun it follows; only 에 attaches directly to 위 with no space.

Looking Ahead
지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now
You can say where a person, place, or thing is located, describe its position relative to another object, and say where you do a daily activity. Combined with Chapters 1 through 7, you can now introduce yourself, describe your family, state dates, talk about food and drink, describe your daily routine, and locate people, places, and things — all in connected polite Korean.
