주말에 뭐 할 거예요?Plans and Future Reference

Talking about weekend plans, making invitations, and connecting ideas with 그리고 and 그래서 · Speak and Write Korean: Foundations of Practical Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Talk about future plans and intentions using -(으)ㄹ 거예요.
  2. Ask someone what they will do, and answer with a specific plan.
  3. Invite a friend to do something together using 같이.
  4. Accept or decline an invitation politely, in everyday polite Korean.
  5. Connect two related sentences using 그리고 and 그래서.
  6. Read and write a short message describing weekend plans.
  7. Maintain accurate Hangeul, spacing, particles, and everyday polite speech level while combining new future-tense sentences with vocabulary and grammar from Unit I and Unit II.

Communication Scenario

It is Friday afternoon, and 지훈 messages 라일라 to ask about her weekend. 라일라 wants to describe what she is planning to do and invite 지훈 to join her for at least one activity. To do this, she needs a way to talk about the future — something Unit II's present-tense and location language cannot yet do on its own.

  1. This chapter introduces future/intention with -(으)ㄹ 거예요, invitations with 같이, and the connectors 그리고 and 그래서.
  2. Every task below builds on identity, family, dates, food, routines, location, and shopping language already active from Chapters 1–10.
  3. By the end of this chapter you will be able to describe your weekend plans, invite someone to join you, and explain your plans in a connected way.

Productive load: approximately 30 items, counting this chapter's vocabulary together with the -(으)ㄹ 거예요 pattern practiced across many verbs already active from Chapters 6–9.

발음 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

This chapter's main pronunciation target is the batchim ㄹ in the ending -(으)ㄹ 거예요, which is often pronounced with a following tense consonant.

Pronunciation Note — -(으)ㄹ 거예요

The ㄱ of 거예요 is commonly pronounced as a tense consonant after the ㄹ batchim: 할 거예요 is pronounced closer to [hal kkeoyeyo] than a plain [geoyeyo]. This is a fixed pronunciation pattern for this ending, not a new general tensification rule to memorize separately.

Read the following aloud, listening for the tensed sound in each phrase.

할 거예요 · 볼 거예요 · 만날 거예요 · 쉴 거예요

받침 점검: continue linking batchim smoothly before vowel-initial particles and endings, as practiced since Chapter 3. No new batchim category is introduced in this chapter.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

문법 1 — Future and intention: -(으)ㄹ 거예요

Communicative purpose: state what you plan or intend to do.

-(으)ㄹ 거예요 attaches to a predicate stem to express a future plan or intention. Use -ㄹ 거예요 after a vowel-final stem and -을 거예요 after a consonant-final stem.

Dictionary formStem type-(으)ㄹ 거예요 form
가다vowel-final갈 거예요
보다vowel-final볼 거예요
먹다consonant-final먹을 거예요
읽다consonant-final읽을 거예요
  • 저는 주말에 쉴 거예요. I am going to rest this weekend. 쉬다 → 쉴 거예요
  • 저는 토요일에 친구를 만날 거예요. I am going to meet a friend on Saturday. 만나다 → 만날 거예요
  • 저는 일요일에 영화를 볼 거예요. I am going to watch a movie on Sunday.
Grammar Note — Plan, not certainty

-(으)ㄹ 거예요 expresses what a speaker plans or expects to do, not an absolute guarantee. It is used naturally for weekend plans, schedules, and intentions stated in the everyday polite style, and pairs with the same time expressions you already use with the present tense, such as 토요일에 and 주말에.

문법 2 — Asking about plans

Communicative purpose: ask what someone else will do.

  • 주말에 뭐 할 거예요? What are you going to do this weekend?
  • 토요일에 어디에 갈 거예요? Where are you going to go on Saturday?

The question word appears in the position where the missing information belongs, exactly as with the question patterns from Chapter 9. The predicate remains -(으)ㄹ 거예요 at the end of the sentence.

문법 3 — Invitations with 같이

Communicative purpose: invite someone to join an activity.

  • 같이 영화를 볼까요? Shall we watch a movie together?
  • 저하고 같이 갈래요? Would you like to go together with me?

같이 means "together" and is placed before the verb. The invitation forms -(으)ㄹ까요? and -(으)ㄹ래요? appear here as formulaic invitation patterns for recognition and controlled use; their fuller grammatical analysis is not required at this stage.

Grammar Note — Accepting and declining

To accept an invitation, 좋아요! is a simple, natural response. To decline politely, Korean speakers commonly soften a refusal rather than stating it directly: 미안해요, 그런데 저는 토요일에 가족을 만날 거예요. ("Sorry, but I'm going to meet my family on Saturday.") gives a reason instead of a flat "no."

문법 4 — Connecting sentences: 그리고 and 그래서

Communicative purpose: connect two related ideas into one longer statement.

  • 저는 토요일에 청소할 거예요. 그리고 친구를 만날 거예요. I'm going to clean on Saturday. And I'm going to meet a friend.
  • 저는 주말에 바빠요. 그래서 쉴 수 없어요. I'm busy this weekend. So I can't rest.

그리고 adds a related idea; 그래서 introduces a result. Both connect two full sentences and appear at the beginning of the second sentence.

Language Building Block — Describing weekend plans
저는 [시간]에 [행동]을/를 할 거예요. 그리고 저는 [시간]에 [행동]을/를 할 거예요. 같이 [행동]을/를 할까요?
A plan sentence, connected to a second plan sentence with 그리고, followed by an invitation
저는 토요일 오전에 운동할 거예요. 그리고 오후에 친구를 만날 거예요. 같이 영화를 볼까요?
I'm going to exercise on Saturday morning. And I'm going to meet a friend in the afternoon. Shall we watch a movie together?

Practice — Building future sentences

  1. Change 공부해요 into its -(으)ㄹ 거예요 form and use it in a sentence about tomorrow.
  2. Ask a partner what they will do this weekend, using 뭐 할 거예요?
  3. Combine two plan sentences using 그리고.
  4. Write one invitation using 같이 and one polite decline using 미안해요, 그런데....

Model Dialogue

Setting: 지훈 messages 라일라 on Friday afternoon to ask about her weekend plans.

지훈 라일라 씨, 주말에 뭐 할 거예요? Layla, what are you going to do this weekend?
라일라 토요일 오전에는 집을 청소할 거예요. 그리고 오후에는 도서관에서 공부할 거예요. On Saturday morning I'm going to clean the house. And in the afternoon I'm going to study at the library.
지훈 저녁에는 뭐 할 거예요? What are you going to do in the evening?
라일라 저녁에는 좀 쉴 거예요. 지훈 씨는 주말에 뭐 할 거예요? In the evening I'll rest a little. What about you, Jihun? What are you going to do this weekend?
지훈 저는 일요일에 영화를 볼 거예요. 같이 볼까요? I'm going to watch a movie on Sunday. Shall we watch it together?
라일라 좋아요! 그런데 저는 오전에 가족을 만날 거예요. 그래서 오후에 만나요. Sounds good! But I'm going to meet my family in the morning. So let's meet in the afternoon.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is 라일라 planning to do on Saturday morning and afternoon?
  2. What does 지훈 invite 라일라 to do, and when?
  3. Does 라일라 accept or decline the invitation? What reason does she give, and what does she suggest instead?
  4. Find one sentence using 그리고 and one sentence using 그래서 in the dialogue.

Listening

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.

수진의 주말 계획

저는 수진이에요. 이번 주말에 저는 바빠요. 토요일 오전에는 운동할 거예요. 그리고 오후에는 친구를 만날 거예요. 우리는 같이 영화를 볼 거예요. 일요일에는 집에서 쉴 거예요. 그래서 일요일에는 약속이 없어요.

듣기 과제 — Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

질문답
What does 수진 do on Saturday morning?______
What does she do with her friend on Saturday afternoon?______
Why does she have no plans on Sunday?______

받아쓰기 — Dictation: Your partner or instructor reads two sentences from the passage above, once each at natural speed. Write what you hear in Hangeul, then check your spacing and particle accuracy.

  1. (a -(으)ㄹ 거예요 sentence with 그리고)
  2. (a -(으)ㄹ 거예요 sentence with 그래서)

Reading

Below is a short message that 민준 wrote to a classmate about his weekend plans. Read it and answer the questions below.

민준의 메시지

안녕하세요! 이번 주말에 뭐 할 거예요? 저는 토요일에 여행할 거예요. 그래서 오늘 저녁에 짐을 쌀 거예요. 일요일에는 집에서 쉴 거예요. 같이 다음 주에 만날까요?

This message recycles greetings, questions, time expressions, and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 sentences from this chapter alongside identity and routine language from earlier chapters.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is 민준 going to do on Saturday?
  2. Why is he going to pack a bag this evening?
  3. What does he suggest doing next week?
  4. Identify one sentence in the message that uses 그래서.

Writing Workshop

This chapter's writing task is a short weekend-plans message, 주말 계획 ("Weekend Plans"), combining at least two future-tense sentences, a connector, and an invitation.

  1. Greet your reader. Use a greeting from Chapter 1.
  2. State a Saturday plan. Use a time expression and -(으)ㄹ 거예요.
  3. Add a second plan. Connect it to the first with 그리고 or 그래서.
  4. State a Sunday plan. Use a different time expression and verb.
  5. Invite your reader. Use 같이 with an invitation pattern from this chapter.
  6. Revise. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.

체크리스트 — Editing checklist:

  • Every sentence uses only Hangeul and only systems activated through Chapter 11.
  • Speech level is consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 throughout.
  • -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is formed correctly for both vowel-final and consonant-final stems.
  • 그리고 and 그래서 are used to connect, not just list, related sentences.
  • 같이 is placed before the verb it modifies.
  • Spacing between nouns, particles, and predicates follows the patterns modeled in Chapters 1–10.

Speaking Practice

통제 연습 — Controlled practice: Plan chain

Working with a partner or alone, take turns stating one weekend plan using -(으)ㄹ 거예요, then connecting a second plan with 그리고 or 그래서, for at least three different verbs.

의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 주말 계획 세우기

Work with a partner. Ask each other 주말에 뭐 할 거예요? and describe your plans for Saturday and Sunday. Then invite your partner to join one activity using 같이, and respond to their invitation by accepting or politely declining with a reason.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing your real or imagined weekend plans in four to five connected sentences, using -(으)ㄹ 거예요, 그리고 or 그래서, and one invitation with 같이.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Making plans among friends

Among friends and classmates, weekend plans are often discussed informally over messages during the week, and invitations are commonly extended a few days ahead, as modeled in this chapter's dialogue and reading.

Culture in Context — Softened refusals

Declining an invitation directly with only "no" can sound abrupt in many everyday Korean interactions. Giving a brief reason, as in 미안해요, 그런데..., is a common way to soften a refusal while remaining honest about one's plans.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Using the present tense to describe a future plan

Error: 저는 주말에 쉬어요. when describing a plan for a future weekend.

Correction: 저는 주말에 쉴 거예요. — a stated plan or intention for a future time uses -(으)ㄹ 거예요, not the plain present tense.

Common Mistake — Wrong stem-final choice for -(으)ㄹ 거예요

Error: 먹으ㄹ 거예요

Correction: 먹을 거예요 — a consonant-final stem takes 을 거예요, attached directly to the stem, not 으ㄹ.

Common Mistake — Stacking sentences without a connector

Error: 저는 청소할 거예요. 저는 친구를 만날 거예요. with no link between the two ideas.

Correction: 저는 청소할 거예요. 그리고 친구를 만날 거예요. — 그리고 signals that the second plan follows naturally from the first in a connected account.

Common Mistake — Placing 같이 after the verb

Error: 영화를 볼까요 같이?

Correction: 같이 영화를 볼까요? — 같이 comes before the verb it modifies, following the predicate-final sentence order studied since Chapter 1.
