종합 연습: 일상생활 속에서Unit Review: Independent Living in Practice
Chapter Objectives
This chapter introduces no major new productive system. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Combine transaction, service, and form-filling language from Chapters 6 through 8 with problem description and direction-giving language from Chapter 9 in a single connected task.
- Describe a personal errand from start to finish: the goal, the transaction or service involved, a problem encountered, and how it was resolved.
- Ask for and give detailed directions using landmarks, turns, and sequence connectors, and confirm understanding.
- State that you are lost or confused and approach a stranger politely for help.
- Use everyday polite speech level consistently across a longer stretch of connected speech and writing.
- Read and listen to a longer, connected passage drawing on Unit II vocabulary and grammar without new unscheduled structures.
- Write a multi-part message that narrates an errand, describes a problem, and reports how it was solved.
- Complete an integrated performance task that evaluates listening, speaking, reading, and writing together.
Communication Scenario
라일라 has had a busy week: she opened a bank account, mailed a package home, and got lost on the way to meet a classmate at a bookstore. Tonight she is writing a longer message to a friend back home, summarizing everything that happened and how she handled each situation. This chapter asks you to do the same — to pull together the transaction, service, problem-description, and direction-giving language from this unit into one connected account of a busy day of errands.
- This chapter does not introduce new grammar, particles, honorific systems, counters, or sound changes. It consolidates the systems activated in Chapters 6 through 9.
- Tasks in this chapter combine service and transaction language (Chapters 6-8), formal request and polite inquiry language (Chapter 8), and problem description and direction-giving language (Chapter 9).
- Assessment in this chapter focuses on whether you can move fluidly between these functions in a single connected passage of listening, speaking, reading, or writing.
Unit II Map
The table below summarizes what Unit II activated across Chapters 6 through 9. Nothing in this chapter goes beyond this map.
| Chapter | Focus | Key Productive Systems |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Opening a bank account | formal service register, form-filling vocabulary, polite requests -아/어 주세요 |
| 7 | Everyday banking and money | money and counter language, transactional questions, -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요? |
| 8 | Mailing a package at the post office | shipping and package vocabulary, formal inquiry language, continued polite requests |
| 9 | Getting lost and asking for directions | 길을 잃다, softened openers 저기요/실례합니다, -고 나서, 근처/맞은편, 그러니까 + -(으)면 되다 |
This chapter reuses these systems together. It does not introduce a new grammar point, particle, honorific form, counter, or sound change.
Cumulative Vocabulary Review
The table below reviews high-value vocabulary from Chapters 6 through 9 that this chapter's tasks depend on. No new vocabulary is introduced.
| Korean | Meaning | From |
|---|---|---|
| 계좌를 열다 | to open an account | Ch. 6 |
| 신분증 | identification card | Ch. 6 |
| 작성하다 | to fill out (a form) | Ch. 6 |
| 돈을 찾다 / 넣다 | to withdraw / deposit money | Ch. 7 |
| -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요? | can you...? | Ch. 7 |
| 소포를 보내다 | to send a package | Ch. 8 |
| 얼마나 걸려요? | how long does it take? | Ch. 7, 8, 9 |
| 길을 잃다 | to get lost | Ch. 9 |
| 저기요 / 실례합니다 | excuse me (softened openers) | Ch. 9 |
| -고 나서 | after doing... | Ch. 9 |
| 근처 / 맞은편 | vicinity / across from | Ch. 9 |
| 그러니까 ... -(으)면 되다 | so... all I have to do is... | Ch. 9 |
Only vocabulary already activated through Chapter 9 is used productively in this chapter's tasks.
Pronunciation Review
This chapter introduces no new sound-change rule. It reviews liaison across particle boundaries in phrases such as 사거리에서 and 계좌를 열고 나서, and reviews the batchim behavior of 잃다 in its past form 잃었어요, as covered in Chapter 9.
As sentences grow longer by combining -고 나서 with earlier clauses, keep each particle firmly attached to its noun and let liaison carry the final consonant of one syllable smoothly into the next vowel-initial particle or ending. Read the practice line below slowly at first, then at a natural conversational pace.
계좌를 열고 나서 소포를 보내러 갔어요 · 길을 잃어서 지나가는 사람한테 물어봤어요
Grammar and Pattern Review
This chapter introduces no new productive grammar. It reviews and combines polite requests, transactional questions, and sequence and confirmation language from Chapters 6 through 9 so that they can be used together in one connected account.
Review: polite requests and transactional questions
- 이 서류 좀 작성해 주세요. Please fill out this form. recycled from Chapter 6, -아/어 주세요
- 오늘 소포를 보낼 수 있어요? Can I send a package today? recycled from Chapters 7-8, -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요?
Review: describing a problem and asking for help
- 저기요, 길을 잃었는데 좀 여쭤봐도 돼요? Excuse me, I'm lost — could I ask you something? recycled from Chapter 9
Review: linking steps with -고 나서 across different tasks
-고 나서 is not limited to direction-giving. It can link any two completed actions in sequence, which makes it useful for narrating an entire errand.
| Pattern | Example | Gloss |
|---|---|---|
| [transaction]-고 나서 [problem/direction] | 계좌를 열고 나서 길을 잃었어요. | After opening the account, I got lost. |
| [direction]-고 나서 [result] | 사거리에서 오른쪽으로 돌고 나서 서점을 찾았어요. | After turning right at the intersection, I found the bookstore. |
[completed action]-고 나서 + [next action or result]
This connector, first activated in Chapter 9 for directions, works equally well for narrating any sequence of completed actions, including errands, transactions, and problem-solving.
소포를 보내고 나서 서점에 가려고 했는데 길을 잃었어요.
After sending the package, I was going to go to the bookstore, but I got lost.
Review: confirming information with 그러니까 and -(으)면 되다
- 그러니까 서류에 이름하고 주소만 쓰면 돼요? So all I have to do is write my name and address on the form? 그러니까 (recycled Ch. 9) applied to a Ch. 6 service context
Practice — Combining across Unit II
- Write one sentence combining a Chapter 6-8 transaction with a Chapter 9 problem using -고 나서.
- Write one confirmation sentence using 그러니까 and -(으)면 되다 in a service context.
- Write one sentence using a softened opener before a transactional question.
Model Dialogue
Setting: 라일라 tells 지영 about her day, combining her bank visit, the package, and getting lost into one connected account.
내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:
- List the three errands 라일라 completed today, in order.
- Why was 라일라 late to meet 지영?
- How did 라일라 finally find the bookstore?
Guided Practice
Complete each task by combining systems from at least two different Unit II chapters.
- Write a sentence describing one errand (banking, mailing a package, or shopping) using vocabulary from Chapters 6-8.
- Add a second sentence using -고 나서 to link that errand to a problem or a next step.
- Write a sentence with a softened opener asking a stranger for help.
- Write a confirmation sentence using 그러니까 and -(으)면 되다.
- Write a closing sentence saying how everything turned out, using vocabulary recycled from earlier chapters.
Listening Assessment
Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.
Listening task: Listen and answer in English.
| 질문 | 답 |
|---|---|
| What two errands did 민수 complete before going to the bookstore? | ______ |
| What happened on the way to the bookstore? | ______ |
| What directions did the passerby give? | ______ |
받아쓰기 — Dictation: Your partner or instructor reads two sentences from the passage above, once each at natural speed. Write what you hear in Hangeul, then check your spacing, particles, and connector spelling.
- (the sentence describing what 민수 did after sending the package)
- (the sentence describing the directions the passerby gave)
Reading Assessment
Below is a longer message that 라일라 wrote summarizing her day. Read it and answer the questions below. No romanization is provided.
This passage recycles vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 6 through 9 only. It introduces no new productive structures.
내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:
- List, in order, all four things 라일라 did today.
- What problem did she encounter, and how did she solve it?
- How did the day end?
Writing Assessment
This chapter's writing task is a longer message narrating a full day of errands: 바쁜 하루 이야기 ("A Story About a Busy Day"). It must combine at least one transaction from Chapters 6-8 with the problem-description and direction-giving language from Chapter 9.
- Open with a greeting. Address the reader.
- Describe your first errand. Use transaction vocabulary from Chapters 6-8 (banking, mailing a package, or a similar service task).
- Link to a second event. Use -고 나서 to connect your first errand to what happened next.
- Describe a problem. Say that you got lost or ran into a difficulty, using 길을 잃다 or similar language.
- Describe asking for help. Use a softened opener and describe the directions or assistance you received.
- Confirm and resolve. Use 그러니까 and -(으)면 되다 or a similar confirmation, and say how the problem was resolved.
- Close. Say how the day ended overall.
- Revise. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
체크리스트 — Editing checklist:
- At least one transaction from Chapters 6-8 is described clearly.
- At least one -고 나서 sentence links two events across the narrative.
- The message clearly states a problem and how it was solved.
- At least one confirmation sentence uses 그러니까 and -(으)면 되다.
- Speech level is consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 throughout.
- Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears in the final draft.
- No grammar, particle, or vocabulary item beyond Chapter 9 appears productively in the text.
Speaking Assessment
통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 하루 정리하기
Practice narrating a simple sequence of three events aloud, using -고 나서 to link each one, until the pattern feels automatic.
의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 바쁜 하루였어요
With a partner, take turns describing a busy day that includes at least one transaction, one problem, and one resolution, as in the Model Dialogue. The listener should ask at least one follow-up question.
혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative
Record yourself narrating a real or imagined busy day that combines a transaction, a problem, and a resolution, using at least one -고 나서 sentence and one confirmation with 그러니까.
Culture and Communication
When Korean speakers recount a day of errands to a friend, they typically move through events in chronological order, using connectors such as -고 나서 and 그다음에 to keep the sequence clear, and often close with a brief evaluative comment such as 바쁘지만 좋은 하루였어요. This chapter's writing and speaking tasks follow that same natural structure.
As in the Model Dialogue, it is common in South Korea for bank tellers, postal workers, and other service staff to offer active help with paperwork, especially to someone who appears to be a foreign resident or first-time customer. Thanking the staff member clearly, as covered in earlier chapters, remains appropriate here.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Beginning a longer passage in everyday polite -아요/어요 and drifting into plain or casual forms partway through, such as ending one sentence with 갔어요 and the next with 갔어 without intending a register shift.
Correction: Keep -아요/어요 consistent across the entire passage unless the task specifically calls for a shift to a close-friend register, as in Chapter 9's reading passage.
Error: Attaching -고 나서 to every clause in a narrative, producing an unnatural chain such as 일어나고 나서 밥을 먹고 나서 학교에 가고 나서...
Correction: Reserve -고 나서 for moments where completing one action clearly matters before the next begins, and use simple -고 or 그리고 for routine, unremarkable sequences: 일어나서 밥을 먹고 학교에 갔어요.
Error: Moving directly into a transactional question or a request for directions without any opener, which can sound abrupt even in a longer narrative.
Correction: Keep softened openers such as 저기요 or 실례합니다 in place whenever a new stranger or service interaction begins within the narrative.

Looking Ahead
지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now
You can handle a full range of independent daily-living situations: opening a bank account, managing money, mailing a package, describing a problem, asking for and confirming directions, and narrating an entire sequence of errands as one connected account, all in consistent everyday polite speech level.
