가족과 친구 이야기Talking About Family and Friends
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Name immediate family members and close friends using appropriate kinship and relationship terms, such as 언니, 오빠, 동생, and 가장 친한 친구.
- Describe basic family structure, including the number of siblings a person has, using counters already introduced.
- Compare two people or things using 보다 and 더.
- Talk about how close you are to someone using vocabulary such as 친하다 and 가깝다.
- Continue using noun-modifying descriptive forms from Chapter 11 to describe family members.
- Understand a short conversation and a short written description about family and friends.
- Write a short paragraph describing your family or a close friend.
- Complete a practical task: comparing two people you know and explaining your relationship to each.
Communication Scenario
A week after the gathering at 지영's apartment, 라일라 and 지영 meet for coffee. 지영 asks 라일라 about her family back home, and 라일라 asks 지영 about her siblings and how she became such close friends with 하준. As they talk, they compare their families and their closest friendships.
- This chapter continues Unit III, extending the description of people from Chapter 11 into family and friendship.
- New productive systems in this chapter are limited to kinship terms, simple comparison with 보다/더, and closeness vocabulary.
- Noun-modifying descriptive forms from Chapter 11, everyday polite speech level, and past-tense narration continue to be used throughout.
Unit III Preview
Unit III (Chapters 11-14) moves from independent daily-living tasks toward describing people, relationships, feelings, and plans in more detail. The table below shows how this chapter fits into that progression.
| Chapter | Focus | New Productive Systems |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | Meeting new people | noun-modifying descriptive forms -(으)ㄴ, appearance and personality vocabulary, introductions |
| 12 | Talking about family and friends | kinship terms, comparison with 보다/더, closeness vocabulary |
| 13 | Feelings and reactions | emotion vocabulary, reason clauses with feelings |
| 14 | Making plans with others | suggestions, invitations, scheduling language |
This chapter introduces only kinship terms, simple comparison, and closeness vocabulary. It recycles the noun-modifying descriptive forms introduced in Chapter 11.
Core Vocabulary
The vocabulary below supports describing family members, close friends, and comparisons between people. All items are productive for this chapter.
| Korean | Meaning | Pattern / Note |
|---|---|---|
| 가족 | family | noun |
| 부모님 | parents | noun; honorific form, used for one's own or another's parents |
| 형제자매 | siblings | noun; general term |
| 오빠 / 형 | older brother (female / male speaker) | kinship term; speaker-gender sensitive |
| 언니 / 누나 | older sister (female / male speaker) | kinship term; speaker-gender sensitive |
| 동생 | younger sibling | noun; not gender-specific by itself |
| 외동 | only child | noun |
| 가장 친한 친구 | best friend | modifier phrase; 가장 + 친하다 modifier + 친구 |
| 친하다 | to be close (friends) | descriptive verb; modifier form 친한 |
| 가깝다 | to be close (in relationship or distance) | descriptive verb; ㅂ irregular, receptive this chapter |
| 닮다 | to resemble | action verb; often used with 하고/랑 |
| 보다 | than (comparison particle) | attaches to the noun being compared against |
| 더 | more | adverb; used with descriptive verbs in comparison |
Receptive support: 막내 (youngest child), 맏이 (eldest child) may appear in the reading passage with glosses.
Pronunciation Focus
This chapter introduces no new sound-change rule. It reviews the liaison pattern from Chapter 11 as it applies to modifier phrases with family words, as in 친한 친구 and 가장 친한 친구, and reviews the final consonant of 동생 and 형제자매 before a following particle.
In natural speech, 보다 is often pronounced smoothly with the preceding noun, with no pause, as in 저보다 and 언니보다. Practice the phrases below at a natural pace.
가장 친한 친구 · 친한 친구 · 저보다 · 언니보다 더
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
This chapter introduces kinship terms for describing family, and the comparison pattern 보다/더, which allows learners to compare two people or things. It reviews the noun-modifying descriptive form from Chapter 11.
New: kinship terms and describing family
Korean kinship terms depend on the speaker's own gender and relative age, not only on the relationship itself. A woman calls her older brother 오빠, while a man calls his older brother 형. The same pattern applies to older sisters.
| Relationship | Female Speaker | Male Speaker |
|---|---|---|
| older brother | 오빠 | 형 |
| older sister | 언니 | 누나 |
| younger sibling | 동생 | 동생 |
Only these core kinship terms are activated productively in this chapter. Extended family terms remain receptive until a later volume schedules them.
[person] + 는/은 + [number] + 형제자매 + 이/가 있어요
This pattern combines the existence construction from Chapter 6 with the sibling word 형제자매 to state how many siblings someone has.
저는 언니가 한 명 있어요.
I have one older sister.
New: comparing two people with 보다/더
To compare two people or things, add 보다 to the noun being compared against, and add 더 before the descriptive verb.
- 저는 언니보다 키가 작아요. I am shorter than my older sister. [noun]보다 + 더 (optional) + descriptive verb
- 하준 씨는 저보다 더 조용해요. Hajun is quieter than me. 저보다 + 더 + 조용해요
더 may be omitted without changing the basic meaning, but including it makes the comparison explicit. This chapter practices both patterns.
Review: noun-modifying descriptive forms -(으)ㄴ
- 제 동생은 활발한 사람이에요. My younger sibling is an outgoing person. recycled -(으)ㄴ from Chapter 11
New: closeness vocabulary in simple sentences
- 저는 지영 씨하고 아주 친해요. I am very close with Jiyoung. 친하다, everyday polite
- 하준 씨는 제 가장 친한 친구예요. Hajun is my best friend. 가장 + 친한 (modifier) + 친구

Writing Workshop
This chapter's writing task is a short paragraph describing your family or a close friend: 가족이나 친한 친구 소개하기 ("Introducing Your Family or a Close Friend").
- State whether you have siblings. Use 형제자매 or a specific kinship term, and state the number if relevant.
- Compare yourself to a sibling or friend. Use 보다 and 더 with a descriptive verb.
- Describe one family member or friend. Use at least one noun-modifying descriptive phrase from Chapter 11.
- Name your best friend. Use 가장 친한 친구 and explain briefly how you met, using -아/어서 알게 되다 from Chapter 11.
- Say how close you are. Use 친하다 in a simple sentence.
- Revise. Check your draft against the checklist below.
체크리스트 — Editing checklist:
- Sibling information or only-child status is stated clearly.
- At least one comparison sentence with 보다/더 is used correctly.
- At least one noun-modifying descriptive phrase is used correctly.
- 가장 친한 친구 is used to introduce a best friend.
- Speech level is consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 throughout.
- Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears in the final draft.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond Chapter 12 appears productively.
Speaking Practice
통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 가족 묘사하기
Practice saying five sentences aloud comparing yourself to a family member or friend, using 보다 and 더, until the pattern feels automatic.
의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 가족과 친구 이야기하기
With a partner, take turns asking about each other's siblings, comparing yourselves to a family member, and introducing your best friend, as in the Model Dialogue.
혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative
Record yourself describing your family or a close friend, including at least one comparison sentence and one noun-modifying descriptive phrase.
Culture and Communication
Korean kinship terms for older siblings depend on the speaker's own gender: a woman uses 오빠 and 언니, while a man uses 형 and 누나. These terms are also commonly extended to close friends who are slightly older, though this chapter focuses on their literal family use.
Asking about the number of siblings someone has is a common and friendly conversation topic in many South Korean social settings, similar to the exchange between 라일라 and 지영. It is generally treated as ordinary small talk rather than a private matter.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: A woman referring to her older brother as 형.
Correction: A woman uses 오빠 for an older brother; a man uses 형. The correct term depends on the speaker, not the sibling.
Error: Saying 언니 더 활발해요 without marking the noun being compared against.
Correction: Attach 보다 to the noun being compared against: 언니보다 더 활발해요.
Error: Writing 친한 친구 가장 instead of the correct word order.
Correction: 가장 comes before the modifier: 가장 친한 친구.
