종합 과제: 사람과 관계Unit III Assessment

Integrated review of people, relationships, feelings, and plans · Speak and Write Korean: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Describe a person's appearance and personality using noun-modifying descriptive forms such as -(으)ㄴ, from Chapter 11.
  2. Talk about family and friends using kinship terms and comparison with 보다/더, from Chapter 12.
  3. Express feelings and explain their causes using emotion vocabulary and -아서/어서, from Chapter 13.
  4. Suggest an activity, respond to an invitation, and confirm a day, time, and place using -(으)ㄹ까요? and scheduling language, from Chapter 14.
  5. Combine these systems in a single connected conversation, message, and short presentation about a person, a relationship, a feeling, and a plan.
  6. Demonstrate consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 speech level, accurate Hangeul spelling, and level-appropriate spacing across an integrated task.
  7. Complete an integrated listening, reading, speaking, and writing assessment covering Chapters 11 through 14.

This chapter introduces no new productive grammar, particles, vocabulary domain, or speech-level system. Its purpose is consolidation and assessment of Unit III.

Communication Scenario

지영's older brother, 민수, has just arrived from abroad, and 지영 wants 라일라 to meet him before he leaves again. This closing scenario asks 라일라 to describe someone new, talk about a family relationship, express how she feels about the visit, and help arrange a plan — bringing together everything practiced across Unit III.

  1. This chapter is the Unit III Assessment, following Chapters 11-14.
  2. No new productive systems are introduced. All tasks recycle noun-modifying descriptive forms, kinship terms and comparison, emotion vocabulary and -아서/어서, and suggestions, invitations, and scheduling language with -(으)ㄹ까요?.
  3. Successful completion of this chapter's tasks demonstrates readiness to move beyond Unit III.

Unit III Review Map

The table below summarizes what Unit III activated. Every system listed here is assessed in this chapter through integrated tasks rather than isolated drills.

ChapterFocusSystems Reviewed in Ch. 15
11Meeting new peoplenoun-modifying descriptive forms -(으)ㄴ, appearance and personality vocabulary, introductions
12Talking about family and friendskinship terms, comparison with 보다/더, closeness vocabulary
13Feelings and reactionsemotion vocabulary, reason clauses with feelings using -아서/어서
14Making plans with otherssuggestions with -(으)ㄹ까요?, invitations, scheduling language

No new grammar, particles, vocabulary domain, or speech level appears in this chapter. Every task below draws only on systems already active by Chapter 14.

어휘 복습 — Cumulative Vocabulary Review

This table is a sample of recycled vocabulary, not an exhaustive list. Review individual chapter vocabulary tables for full coverage before the assessment.

발음 복습 — Pronunciation Review

Pronunciation Review

No new sound-change rule is introduced in this chapter. Review the rising intonation of -(으)ㄹ까요? questions, the liaison in phrases such as 약속이 and 시간이, and the falling intonation of statements describing feelings, such as 정말 기뻐요.

Pronunciation Note — Consistency across sentence types

An integrated conversation moves between statements, questions, and suggestions. Keep everyday polite -아요/어요 endings consistent while adjusting intonation: gently falling for statements, gently rising for -(으)ㄹ까요? suggestions and 어때요? questions.

Grammar and Sentence Pattern Review

This chapter introduces no new grammar. It consolidates four systems from Unit III so that they can be used together in one connected task.

Review: noun-modifying descriptive forms (Chapter 11)

  • 키가 큰 사람 a tall person descriptive stem + -(으)ㄴ + noun

Review: kinship terms and comparison with 보다/더 (Chapter 12)

  • 제 오빠는 저보다 나이가 많아요. My older brother is older than me. kinship term + 보다 + 더-supported comparison

Review: emotion vocabulary and -아서/어서 (Chapter 13)

  • 오빠를 만나서 기뻐요. I'm glad because I get to meet your brother. reason clause -아서/어서 + feeling

Review: suggestions, invitations, and scheduling (Chapter 14)

Dictionary FormStem Type-(으)ㄹ까요? Form
만나다vowel-final만날까요?
먹다consonant-final먹을까요?
Building Block — Integrated pattern

[descriptive modifier + noun] + [kinship/comparison] + [-아서/어서 feeling] + [-(으)ㄹ까요? suggestion]

This chapter's tasks require combining all four Unit III systems within a single, connected stretch of speech or writing, not using them in isolation.

키가 큰 오빠가 와서 신나요. 같이 저녁 먹을까요?

I'm excited because my tall older brother has come. Shall we eat dinner together?

Practice — Combining Unit III systems

  1. Write one sentence describing a person using a noun-modifying descriptive form.
  2. Write one sentence comparing that person to yourself or someone else using 보다/더.
  3. Write one sentence expressing a feeling about meeting that person, explained with -아서/어서.
  4. Write one sentence suggesting a plan connected to that feeling, using -(으)ㄹ까요?.

Integrated Dialogue

Setting: 지영 introduces her older brother 민수 to 라일라 and suggests they all spend time together before he leaves.

지영 라일라 씨, 이 사람은 제 오빠 민수예요. 저보다 키가 더 커요. Laila, this is my older brother, Minsu. He's taller than me.
라일라 안녕하세요! 만나서 반가워요. 정말 친절해 보여요. Hello! Nice to meet you. You seem really kind.
민수 반가워요, 라일라 씨. 지영이한테서 이야기 많이 들었어요. Nice to meet you, Laila. I've heard a lot about you from Jiyeong.
지영 오빠가 와서 정말 신나요! 라일라 씨, 오빠가 다음 주에 다시 가서 좀 슬퍼요. 그래서 이번 주말에 같이 저녁 먹을까요? I'm so excited my brother is here! Laila, I'm a little sad because he's leaving again next week. So shall we eat dinner together this weekend?
라일라 네, 좋은 생각이에요. 토요일 저녁 여섯 시 어때요? Yes, that's a good idea. How about Saturday evening at six?
지영 좋아요. 학교 앞 식당에서 만나요. Good. Let's meet at the restaurant in front of school.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. How does 지영 describe her brother, and how is he compared to her?
  2. Why does 지영 feel both excited and a little sad?
  3. What plan do they agree on, and when and where will they meet?

Guided Practice

  1. Describe a family member using a noun-modifying descriptive form and a comparison with 보다/더.
  2. Explain a feeling about seeing a family member or friend again, using -아서/어서.
  3. Suggest an activity to do with that person using -(으)ㄹ까요?, and propose a day, time, and place.

Listening Assessment

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.

오빠가 왔어요

제 오빠가 다른 나라에서 왔어요. 오빠는 저보다 키가 더 크고 아주 친절해요. 오빠를 만나서 정말 기뻐요. 그런데 오빠가 다음 주에 다시 가서 조금 슬퍼요. 그래서 오빠가 가기 전에 친구들하고 같이 저녁 먹을까요 하고 물어봤어요. 토요일 저녁 여섯 시에 학교 앞 식당에서 만나기로 했어요.

듣기 과제 — Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

질문답
How is the speaker's brother described, and how is he compared to the speaker?______
Why does the speaker feel both glad and a little sad?______
What plan was made, and when and where will it happen?______

Reading Assessment

Below is a short message that 라일라 wrote to a friend back home describing the visit. Read it and answer the questions below. No romanization is provided.

This passage recycles vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1 through 14 and introduces no structures beyond Unit III.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. How does 라일라 describe 민수, and how is he compared to 지영?
  2. Why is 지영 both excited and a little sad?
  3. What day, time, and place did they agree on?

Writing Assessment

This chapter's writing task combines the four Unit III systems into one short message: 사람, 마음, 약속 ("A Person, a Feeling, a Plan").

  1. Introduce a person. Describe someone (a family member, friend, or new acquaintance) using a noun-modifying descriptive form.
  2. Compare. Add one comparison sentence about that person using 보다/더.
  3. Express a feeling. Explain how you feel about this person or situation, using -아서/어서.
  4. Suggest a plan. Propose an activity using -(으)ㄹ까요?.
  5. Confirm details. State a day, time, and place using scheduling vocabulary and 어때요? or 에서 만나요.
  6. Revise. Check your draft against the checklist below.

체크리스트 — Editing checklist:

  • A person is described using a noun-modifying descriptive form.
  • A comparison sentence with 보다/더 is included and accurate.
  • A feeling is explained with -아서/어서.
  • A suggestion is made using -(으)ㄹ까요?.
  • A specific day, time, and place are confirmed.
  • Speech level is consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 throughout.
  • Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears in the final draft.
  • No grammar or vocabulary beyond Chapters 11 through 14 appears productively.

Speaking Assessment

통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 사람 소개와 제안

Practice saying aloud, in order: a description of a person, a comparison, a feeling explained with a reason, and a suggestion with -(으)ㄹ까요?, until the sequence feels natural.

의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 사람, 마음, 약속

With a partner, introduce a person (real or imagined), compare that person to yourself, explain a feeling about the situation, and agree on a plan together, as in the Integrated Dialogue.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself introducing a person, comparing them to someone else, explaining a feeling with a reason, and proposing and confirming a plan, speaking each part in turn without stopping.

Culture and Communication Review

Culture in Context — Introducing family members

When introducing a family member to a friend, speakers often mention the relationship first (such as 제 오빠) before adding a brief description. This habit, reviewed from Chapter 12, helps the listener immediately understand the social context of the introduction.

Culture in Context — Mixed feelings and softened disclosure

It is natural in everyday South Korean conversation to express two feelings together, such as being glad and a little sad at the same time, as in this chapter's dialogue. Naming both feelings, rather than only the positive one, is a normal and accepted way of sharing news about a visit or a departure.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Comparing without 보다

Error: Describing two people's height or age without a comparison particle, such as saying 오빠가 커요. 저는 작아요. as two disconnected sentences when a direct comparison is intended.

Correction: Use 보다 to connect the comparison directly: 오빠는 저보다 키가 더 커요.

Common Mistake — Dropping the reason connector

Error: Stating a feeling and its cause as two separate, disconnected sentences, such as 오빠를 만났어요. 기뻐요. when a reason relationship is intended.

Correction: Connect the cause and the feeling with -아서/어서: 오빠를 만나서 기뻐요.

Common Mistake — Mixing speech levels within one message

Error: Beginning a message in everyday polite -아요/어요 style and switching partway to plain or formal endings without a scheduled reason.

Correction: Keep everyday polite -아요/어요 style consistent throughout the entire message or conversation, as in all Unit III model texts.
