Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Give a personal opinion or impression using -는 것 같다 and -(으)ㄴ 것 같다.
- Introduce an opinion more explicitly with 제 생각에는 ("in my opinion").
- Contrast two ideas across separate sentences using the connector 반면에 ("on the other hand"), in addition to the sentence-internal contrast -지만 from earlier chapters.
- Talk about hobbies, movies, dramas, music, books, and exhibitions using level-appropriate media vocabulary.
- Recognize the difference between a casual spoken opinion and a more careful written impression, without producing a new formal speech level.
- Ask for and give recommendations about leisure activities and respond to someone else's opinion politely, including polite disagreement.
- Maintain consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 speech level and accurate Hangeul spelling while expressing and contrasting opinions.
This chapter continues Unit IV, 경험, 의견, 그리고 프로젝트 (Experiences, Opinions, and Projects). It introduces opinion expression and stronger contrast as productive systems, expands vocabulary into culture and media, and raises awareness of register differences between casual talk and written commentary.
Communication Scenario
지영 promised at the end of Chapter 16 to recommend a few travel destinations to 라일라. While looking through travel photos together, they end up talking about a travel documentary they both watched, and the conversation naturally turns to movies, dramas, music, and books. 라일라 is not sure whether she prefers the documentary or a drama 지영 recommends, so the two of them compare the two shows and share their honest opinions, including where they disagree.
- This chapter recycles experience, desire, and intention language from Chapter 16, along with earlier description and preference vocabulary.
- This chapter introduces opinion expression with -는 것 같다 and stronger sentence-level contrast with 반면에 as new productive systems.
- This chapter also introduces media and leisure vocabulary and raises awareness of register differences between spoken and written opinion.
Unit IV Overview
Unit IV, 경험, 의견, 그리고 프로젝트, is the final unit of Volume II. Chapter 16 activated experience, desire, and intention and expanded writing into narrative paragraphs. Chapter 17 builds on that foundation by activating opinion and contrast language in the context of culture, leisure, and media, preparing learners for the goal-setting and advice-giving chapters that follow.
| Chapter | Focus | Principal New Systems |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | Travel and Special Experiences | experience -아/어 본 적이 있다, desire -고 싶다, intention -(으)려고 하다, narrative paragraphs |
| 17 | Culture, Leisure, and Media | opinions -는 것 같다, contrast 반면에, media vocabulary, register awareness |
| 18 | Future Goals | -(으)려고 하다 expansion, -기로 하다 expansion, goal statements |
| 19 | Explaining Problems and Giving Advice | advice, softening, indirect requests, -는데 intro |
| 20 | Final B1 Portfolio | integrated B1-oriented portfolio and presentation |
Chapter 17 introduces opinion expression and the new contrast connector 반문에... 반면에 as its two major grammar systems, while media vocabulary and register awareness are treated as an integrated vocabulary and pragmatics load rather than as separate grammar systems.

Receptive Vocabulary
The following items appear in this chapter's reading and listening materials for recognition only. They are not assessed productively.
| Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 별점 | star rating |
| 평론가 | critic |
| 화제가 되다 | to become a hot topic |
Pronunciation Focus
This chapter recycles previously introduced sound changes and adds no new sound-change rule. One item deserves attention because it appears frequently in this chapter's new grammar pattern.
The opinion pattern 것 같아요 is usually pronounced quickly as a single smooth unit rather than as two separate words. The batchim in 것 is unreleased and blends into the following syllable, so the phrase sounds closer to a single rhythmic beat than to "geot" plus "gatayo" spoken separately. Practice the whole phrase as one breath group before analyzing its two parts.
Because 반면에 begins a new sentence rather than joining a single clause, speakers typically pause briefly before it and place a small rise in pitch on 반면에 itself to signal that a contrasting idea is coming, as in 그 드라마는 감동적이에요. 반면에, 다큐멘터리는 좀 지루해요.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns
This chapter introduces two connected systems for sharing and comparing opinions: a way to soften and personalize a statement as an opinion, and a way to contrast two full ideas across separate sentences.
1. Opinion: -는 것 같다 / -(으)ㄴ 것 같다
Form: action verb stem + -는 것 같다; descriptive verb stem + -(으)ㄴ 것 같다; noun + 인 것 같다. In everyday polite speech, this becomes -는 것 같아요, -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요, and 인 것 같아요. Past experience can be described with -았/었던 것 같다 in receptive contexts, but this chapter's productive target is the present-oriented forms above.
Meaning: this pattern softens a statement into a personal impression, guess, or tentative judgment rather than a flat assertion. It is close to English "it seems that..." or "I think that...," and is milder and more natural in ordinary conversation than a direct statement.
Use: use -는 것 같아요 and -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요 to give impressions about movies, books, food, people, and situations, especially when the speaker wants to sound polite, modest, or open to disagreement rather than certain.
| Base Form | Word Type | 것 같아요 Form |
|---|---|---|
| 재미있다 (descriptive) | descriptive verb | 재미있는 것 같아요 |
| 지루하다 (descriptive) | descriptive verb | 지루한 것 같아요 |
| 좋아하다 (action) | action verb | 좋아하는 것 같아요 |
| 인기 (noun) | noun + 이다 | 인기가 많은 것 같아요 |
Note that 재미있다 and 재미없다 pattern like action verbs for this ending (-는 것 같아요), even though they describe a quality; most other descriptive verbs use -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요.
- 그 드라마는 정말 재미있는 것 같아요. I think that drama is really interesting. 재미있다 (action-like) + 는 것 같아요
- 이 영화는 좀 지루한 것 같아요. I think this movie is a bit boring. 지루하다 stem + (으)ㄴ 것 같아요
- 제 생각에는 그 소설이 더 감동적인 것 같아요. In my opinion, that novel is more moving. 제 생각에는 + 감동적이다 stem + ㄴ 것 같아요
Error: Attaching -는 것 같아요 to a simple, verifiable fact that does not need softening, such as 오늘은 화요일인 것 같아요. when the day of the week is simply known, not a matter of opinion.
Correction: Reserve -는 것 같아요 for genuine impressions, guesses, or opinions, and state plain facts directly: 오늘은 화요일이에요.
2. Contrast Across Sentences: 반면에
Form: [Sentence A]. 반면에, [Sentence B]. 반면에 begins a new sentence; it does not attach to a verb stem the way -지만 does. A comma commonly follows 반면에 in careful writing, though it may be dropped in quick speech.
Meaning: 반면에 means "on the other hand" or "in contrast." It signals that the second sentence presents an idea, quality, or fact that contrasts with the first, often to compare two things side by side.
Use: use 반면에 when comparing two separate items across two full sentences, such as two movies, two hobbies, or two opinions. Continue to use -지만 from earlier chapters when the contrast occurs within a single sentence.
- 그 드라마는 감동적이에요. 반면에, 다큐멘터리는 좀 지루한 것 같아요. That drama is moving. On the other hand, I think the documentary is a bit boring. two sentences + 반면에 as sentence-initial connector
- 저는 소설을 좋아해요. 반면에, 지영 씨는 영화를 더 좋아해요. I like novels. On the other hand, Jiyoung likes movies more. contrast between two people's preferences
[opinion about A with -는 것 같다/-(으)ㄴ 것 같다] + [반면에] + [opinion about B]
A natural comparison of two shows, books, or hobbies often gives a soft opinion about the first item, then uses 반면에 to introduce a contrasting soft opinion about the second item.
그 드라마는 정말 감동적인 것 같아요. 반면에, 다큐멘터리는 정보는 많지만 조금 지루한 것 같아요.
I think that drama is really moving. On the other hand, I think the documentary has a lot of information, but it's a little boring.
3. Register Awareness: Casual Opinion versus Written Impression
This chapter does not introduce a new formal speech level, but learners should notice that the same opinion can sound different depending on setting. In casual spoken conversation, an opinion is often short and includes softeners such as 좀 and 사실은: 사실은 좀 지루한 것 같아요. In a short written review or online comment (후기), the same opinion is often expressed a little more fully and directly, though still in everyday polite style at this level: 이 영화는 줄거리가 신선하지만, 반면에 후반부는 조금 지루한 것 같아요. Recognizing this difference is receptive and analytical at this stage; learners are not expected to produce a separate formal written style until later chapters.
Practice — Combining the new systems
- Write one sentence giving your opinion of a movie or drama using -는 것 같아요 or -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요.
- Write one sentence giving your opinion of a book, song, or exhibition using 제 생각에는 ~ 것 같아요.
- Write two sentences that contrast two hobbies, shows, or preferences using 반면에.
Model Dialogue
Setting: 라일라 and 지영 are looking through travel photos and start talking about a travel documentary and a drama they have both seen.

- Ask a partner (or yourself, in writing) for their opinion of a show or hobby, then respond by agreeing (동의해요) or politely disagreeing (저는 조금 다르게 생각해요).
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.
Listening task: Listen and answer in English.
| 질문 | 답 |
|---|---|
| What does 민수 seem to prefer, movies or novels? | ______ |
| What does 지영 seem to prefer, in contrast? | ______ |
| What did 지영 think of the novel 민수 recommended? | ______ |
Reading Practice
Below is a short online review that 라일라 wrote after watching a movie 지영 recommended. Read it and answer the questions below. No romanization is provided.
영화 후기: 「특별한 하루」
이 영화는 줄거리가 신선한 것 같아요. 배우들의 연기도 정말 좋았어요. 특히 마지막 장면은 아주 감동적인 것 같아요. 반면에, 영화 초반부는 조금 느리고 지루한 것 같아요. 그래도 전체적으로는 재미있는 것 같아요. 저는 이 감독의 다른 영화도 보고 싶어요. 제 생각에는 이 영화가 요즘 인기가 많은 이유를 알 것 같아요.
This passage recycles vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1 through 16 and introduces no structures beyond this chapter's scheduled systems.
내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:
- According to 라일라, what part of the movie is contrasted with the moving final scene?
- What is 라일라's overall opinion of the movie?
- What does 라일라 say she wants to do next?

- At least one sentence uses 제 생각에는 or 사실은.
- The paragraph closes with a clear preference or follow-up wish or plan.
- Speech level is consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 throughout.
- Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears in the final draft.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond Chapters 1 through 17 appears productively.
Speaking Practice
통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 의견 말하기
Practice giving a short opinion about a familiar movie, drama, or book using -는 것 같아요 or -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요, then responding to a partner's opinion with 동의해요 or 저는 조금 다르게 생각해요.
의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 두 가지 비교하기
With a partner, compare two shows, books, or hobbies you both know. Take turns giving your opinion of each one and connecting them with 반면에, then agree on a recommendation for each other.
혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative
Record yourself comparing two movies, dramas, books, or hobbies, giving an opinion about each and connecting them with 반면에, then stating your overall preference.
Culture and Communication
In everyday South Korean conversation, opinions about movies, shows, and other people's choices are often softened with expressions like -는 것 같아요 rather than stated as flat, certain judgments. This is not a sign of uncertainty about the facts; it is a common conversational habit that leaves room for the other person's opinion and keeps the conversation comfortable, even among close friends.
Recommending a movie, drama, book, or artist to a friend, and following through by actually watching or reading it, is a common way that friends in South Korea maintain shared conversation topics over time. Reporting back with an honest but polite opinion, as 지영 does in the listening passage, is considered a natural and expected part of the exchange.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Attaching the action-verb pattern to a descriptive verb, producing an incorrect form such as 지루하는 것 같아요 for I think it's boring.
Correction: Use the descriptive-verb pattern -(으)ㄴ 것 같아요 instead: 지루한 것 같아요. Remember that 재미있다/재미없다 are the main exceptions that use -는 것 같아요.
Error: Starting a new sentence with 반면에 but writing it as if it were attached mid-clause, producing an incomplete fragment such as 그 영화는 재미있지만 반면에. with nothing following.
Correction: Use -지만 to join two ideas within one sentence, and use 반면에 to begin a complete new sentence with its own subject and predicate: 그 영화는 재미있어요. 반면에, 그 드라마는 조금 지루해요.
Error: Disagreeing with a flat, direct statement such as 틀렸어요. ("You're wrong.") in response to someone's opinion about a movie or show.
Correction: Soften disagreement with expressions such as 저는 조금 다르게 생각해요. or 그럴 수도 있지만, 저는... before giving your own opinion.
