최종 과제: 나의 생활과 계획Final Project: My Life and My Plans
Chapter Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Present an integrated, connected account of your own life, routines, relationships, and past experiences, drawing on systems from across Volume II.
- Describe housing, services, transportation, and community participation using scheduled particle, request, and reason/condition patterns.
- Explain your studies or work, summarize a public notice or community issue, and discuss goals for the future.
- Narrate a travel or special experience, state an opinion, and support it with a reason or contrast.
- Explain a problem with background information, make a softened request, and give or receive advice.
- Produce a connected written portfolio text and a corresponding spoken presentation that integrate the above functions.
- Maintain consistent everyday polite -아요/어요 speech level, accurate Hangeul spelling and spacing, and appropriate register throughout an extended, multi-paragraph performance.
This chapter is the Unit IV and Volume II final assessment. It introduces no major new productive grammar, particle, speech-level, honorific, counter, or sound-change system. Its purpose is to consolidate and integrate the full range of Volume II communication into one connected portfolio.
Communication Scenario
라일라's Korean class is holding a small end-of-term sharing session. Each learner will prepare a short written portfolio and a spoken presentation called 나의 생활과 계획 ("My Life and My Plans"), covering who they are, how their daily life and relationships have developed, what has happened to them recently, where they live and how they get around, what they are learning or working on, what is happening in their community, a memorable travel experience, an opinion about something in their life, a goal for the future, and a problem they solved along the way. 라일라 and 지영 help each other prepare by reviewing the systems from every chapter in the volume.
- This chapter recycles vocabulary, grammar, particles, speech level, and pragmatics from all nineteen prior chapters of Volume II.
- This chapter introduces no new productive grammar, particle, honorific, counter, or sound-change system.
- The chapter's task is to combine previously activated systems into one connected, organized written and spoken portfolio.
Portfolio Map: What Each Chapter Contributes
The final portfolio draws one section from each unit of the volume. Use this map to identify which earlier chapter's systems belong in each part of your written and spoken portfolio.
No new system appears in this map. Every row names a system already activated earlier in Volume II.
Core Vocabulary Review
The following review vocabulary supports the ten portfolio sections. All items are recycled from Chapters 1 through 19; no new productive vocabulary is introduced.
| Korean | Meaning | Category / Pattern | Recycled From |
|---|---|---|---|
| 관계 | relationship | noun | Ch. 2 |
| 습관 | habit | noun | Ch. 3 |
| 이사하다 | to move (residence) | action verb | Ch. 6 |
| 고치다 | to fix, repair | action verb; 을/를 | Ch. 6 |
| 예약하다 | to make a reservation/appointment | action verb | Ch. 7 |
| 갈아타다 | to transfer (transportation) | action verb | Ch. 8 |
| 고르다 | to choose; 르 irregular | action verb | Ch. 9 |
| 배우다 | to learn | action verb | Ch. 11 |
| 책임 | responsibility | noun | Ch. 12 |
| 공지 | notice, announcement | noun | Ch. 13 |
| 환경 | environment | noun | Ch. 14 |
| 경험 | experience | noun | Ch. 16 |
| 취미 | hobby | noun | Ch. 17 |
| 목표 | goal | noun | Ch. 18 |
| 문제 | problem | noun | Ch. 19 |
| 조언 | advice | noun | Ch. 19 |
| 계획 | plan | noun | Ch. 1, 18 |
| 발표하다 | to present, give a presentation | action verb | portfolio task |
This chapter reviews rather than expands productive vocabulary. Learners may supplement with any previously activated vocabulary relevant to their own life and plans.
Pronunciation Review
This chapter introduces no new sound-change rule. Two cumulative review points support extended, connected speech in the final portfolio presentation.
Longer connected speech, such as a portfolio presentation, still relies on the same sentence-ending intonation patterns learned throughout Volume II: a falling pattern for statements, a rising pattern for questions, and the open, unfinished-sounding rise on connectors like -는데 and -아/어서 before the sentence continues. Practice keeping these patterns consistent even as your sentences link together into paragraphs.
When clauses link together with connectors such as -아/어서, -(으)면, or -는데, batchim liaison continues to apply across the clause boundary, just as it does within a single word. Reading your portfolio draft aloud slowly is a useful way to notice and practice these connected-speech patterns before presenting.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns Review
This chapter introduces no new grammar system. It reviews and integrates the connective, modal, and pragmatic systems most useful for building a connected, multi-paragraph portfolio.
1. Connecting Paragraphs Across Sections
Use connectors reviewed across the volume — 그리고, 그래서, 하지만, 그런데 — at the start of a new paragraph to link one portfolio section to the next, the same way they link sentences within a single paragraph.
Clause-level connectors such as -아/어서 (reason/result), -지만 (contrast), -(으)면 (condition), and -는데 (background) remain available throughout the portfolio wherever they were originally scheduled.
- 저는 요즘 회사에서 새로운 책임을 맡고 있는데, 그래서 시간이 많이 없어요. These days I've taken on a new responsibility at work, so I don't have much time. -는데 (background, Ch. 19) + -아/어서 (reason, Ch. 4)
- 저는 아침에 운동하는 게 좋을 것 같아요. 그리고 저녁에는 가족과 시간을 보내려고 해요. I think it would be good to exercise in the morning. And in the evening, I plan to spend time with family. -는 게 좋을 것 같아요 (advice, Ch. 19) + 그리고 + -(으)려고 하다 (intention, Ch. 18)
2. Reviewing Tense, Modality, and Speech-Level Consistency
A connected life-and-plans portfolio naturally moves between present routines (-아요/어요), past experiences (-았/었어요), ongoing situations (-고 있어요), and future plans (-(으)ㄹ 거예요, -(으)려고 해요, -기로 했어요). Keep track of which time frame each section describes, and keep the everyday polite -아요/어요 speech level consistent throughout, even as tense and modality shift from section to section.
| Portfolio Section | Typical Time Frame | Example Ending |
|---|---|---|
3. Reviewing Softened, Indirect, and Opinion Language
An integrated, natural-sounding portfolio uses opinion softening (-는 것 같아요, Ch. 17), advice softening (-는 게 좋을 것 같아요, Ch. 19), and request softening (좀, 혹시, Ch. 19) in the sections where they are relevant, rather than stating every idea as a flat, direct fact.
[topic/background] + [description or narrative] + [opinion or reason] + [goal or advice]
A well-organized portfolio paragraph introduces its topic, develops it with description or narrative detail, adds an opinion or reason, and closes with a goal, plan, or piece of advice, recycling systems from across the volume.
저는 요즘 사무실 근처로 이사했는데, 그래서 출퇴근 시간이 많이 줄었어요. 새 동네는 조용하고 편리한 것 같아요. 앞으로는 이 동네에서 오래 살고 싶어요.
I recently moved near my office, so my commute time has gone down a lot. I think the new neighborhood is quiet and convenient. I'd like to live in this neighborhood for a long time from now on.
Practice — Reviewing across two units
- Write one sentence about your daily routine using -고 있어요 (Ch. 3).
- Write one sentence narrating a past event using -았/었어요 and a sequence word (Ch. 4).
- Write one sentence stating a future goal using -기로 했어요 (Ch. 18).
- Write one sentence explaining a small problem using -는데 (Ch. 19).
Model Dialogue
Setting: 라일라 and 지영 practice their portfolio presentations together before the class sharing session.
내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:
- List at least four portfolio sections that 라일라 mentions in this dialogue.
- What does 지영 suggest about the length of 라일라's presentation, and how does she soften the suggestion?
- What does 라일라 decide to do in response?
Guided Practice
- List the ten portfolio sections from the Portfolio Map in the order you plan to present them.
- For each section, write down one grammar pattern from that chapter that you plan to use.
- Write one connector sentence that links two of your sections together.
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.
Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

Reading Practice
Below is a sample portfolio text similar to the one you will write. Read it and answer the questions below. No romanization is provided.
This passage recycles vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 1 through 19 and introduces no structures beyond this chapter's scheduled review systems.

- Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears in the final draft.
- Spacing and particles are accurate throughout.
- No grammar or vocabulary beyond Chapters 1 through 20 appears productively.
Speaking Practice
통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 부분별로 말하기
Practice saying each portfolio section aloud one at a time, checking tense, modality, and speech-level consistency before linking sections together.
의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 발표 연습하기
With a partner, present your full portfolio aloud. Your partner should ask at least two follow-up questions using scheduled question forms, and should respond to your problem-and-advice section with sympathy or a further suggestion.
혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative
Record yourself presenting your full portfolio from beginning to end, then listen back and check your intonation, speech level, and pacing against the Pronunciation Review notes above.
Culture and Communication
In many South Korean classroom, workplace, and community settings, sharing a personal update — a move, a new hobby, a goal, or a recent difficulty — with a group is common at the end of a term, project, or year. Presenters typically balance openness about challenges with a forward-looking, positive close, similar to the structure of this chapter's portfolio task.
Naming a friend, colleague, or family member who gave helpful advice, as 라일라 does in the sample portfolio by crediting 지영 씨, is a common and appreciated way to close a personal update. It signals gratitude and reinforces the relationship in front of the group.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Beginning the portfolio in everyday polite -아요/어요 and then sliding into casual or plain forms partway through, especially in the goal or problem sections.
Correction: Keep -아요/어요 consistent across all ten sections, since this is the volume's productive speech-level baseline; review each section aloud for accidental plain-form endings before presenting.
Error: Presenting each portfolio section as an isolated list item, with no connectors linking one topic to the next.
Correction: Use connectors such as 그리고, 그런데, or a background clause with -는데 to move naturally from one section to the next, as modeled in the Grammar Review and sample portfolio text.
Error: Reaching for unfamiliar advanced vocabulary or grammar to describe a specialized job, hobby, or topic that goes beyond Chapters 1–20.
Correction: Simplify the topic to fit activated Volume II systems, or describe it in general terms using recycled vocabulary, rather than introducing unscheduled structures.
Chapter Review
Section A — 어휘 (Vocabulary)
1. List one review vocabulary item from each of five different chapters, with their meanings.
Section B — 문법 (Grammar)
1. Write one sentence using -고 있어요 to describe a current routine.
2. Write one sentence using -기로 했어요 or -(으)려고 해요 to describe a future plan.
3. Write one sentence using -는데 to introduce a problem, followed by a softened request or piece of advice.
Section C — 독해 이해 (Reading Comprehension)
1. According to the sample portfolio, summarize 라일라's life update in three to four English sentences, naming which chapters each part recycles.
Section D — 쓰기 (Writing)
1. Write your own "My Life and My Plans" portfolio text following the Writing Workshop steps and checklist.
Section E — 말하기 (Speaking)
1. Present your portfolio aloud to a partner, instructor, or recording, following the Speaking Practice guidance above.
누적 복습 — Cumulative review
This chapter recycles and integrates vocabulary, grammar, particles, speech level, and pragmatics from all nineteen prior chapters of Volume II: self-description and relationships, habits and past narrative, housing and services, transportation and choices, learning and work, community and public information, travel experience, opinion and culture, future goals, and problem-explaining and advice. No new productive system is introduced. This integrated performance closes Volume II and prepares learners for the more independent B1-oriented communication expected at the start of Volume III.

Check that: all ten portfolio sections appear somewhere across the full submission, tense and modality match each section, at least one connector links two sections, softened opinion/advice/request language appears where called for, and no structures beyond Chapter 20 appear productively.
Looking Ahead
지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now
You can produce a connected, multi-paragraph written and spoken account of your own life, combining self-description, routines, past narrative, housing and services, learning and work, community participation, travel experience, opinion, future goals, and problem-and-advice language, all in consistent everyday polite speech level. This completes the Volume II B1-oriented communicative arc.
