비교와 선택Comparison and Choice

Comparison with 보다, superlatives with 가장/제일, classification, and preference reasoning · Speak and Write Korean: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use vocabulary for comparing options, ranking choices, and explaining a preference.
  2. Compare two items using 보다 ("than") and describe the compared quality with a descriptive verb.
  3. Add emphasis to a comparison using 더 ("more") and 훨씬 ("much more").
  4. Identify the best option among three or more using 가장 and 제일 ("the most").
  5. Classify and select among options using 중에서 ("among/out of") together with 가장/제일.
  6. State a preference and justify it using -는 게 더 낫다/좋다 ("it is better to ~"), building on the stance and reason systems from Chapter 11.
  7. Read a short comparison passage and identify what is being compared, on what basis, and which option is preferred.
  8. Write and discuss a short comparison that ranks options and gives a reasoned preference.

This chapter introduces comparison, superlative, and preference-reasoning patterns as new productive systems. It builds directly on the stance-marking and reason-marking expressions from Chapter 11 (제 생각에는, 왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요) by applying them to comparative judgments. It does not introduce new speech levels or new honorific systems.

Opening Scenario

After their discussion in Chapter 11, 지영, 민준, 라일라, and 수아 have been asked by their instructor to compare three possible class field trip options: a museum, a market tour, and a hiking trail. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, and the group needs to compare them, rank them, and recommend one option with a clear reason. 라일라 has strong opinions about which option would be most useful for practicing Korean, while 수아 is more interested in which option is most convenient for the whole group.

  1. You will build vocabulary for comparing, ranking, and choosing among options.
  2. You will learn to compare two things with 보다 and to identify the best of several things with 가장/제일.
  3. You will state and justify a preference using -는 게 더 낫다/좋다, combined with the reason-giving language from Chapter 11.

발음 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation — Stress on comparison intensifiers

In comparative sentences, 더 and 훨씬 typically receive noticeably stronger stress than the surrounding words, since they carry the main comparative meaning. In 이게 훨씬 더 좋아요, both 훨씬 and 더 are emphasized, with 훨씬 receiving the heaviest stress of the sentence.

Also practice the batchim pronunciation of 낫다 and its polite form 나아요: the final ㅅ of the stem is dropped before a vowel-initial ending, a pattern recycled from the ㅅ-irregular verbs introduced receptively in Volume II and reinforced productively here.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter introduces comparison, superlative, classification, and preference-reasoning patterns as new productive systems, and connects them to the stance and reason expressions already active from Chapter 11.

1. Comparing Two Things with 보다

Grammar — Noun + 보다 (+ 더) + descriptive verb

보다 attaches directly to the noun being compared against, and means "than." The item being described normally appears with 이/가 or as the topic, and 더 ("more") often appears before the descriptive verb for clarity, although it can be omitted once the comparison is clear from context.

For a stronger emphasis than 더 alone, use 훨씬 더 ("much more").

  • 박물관이 시장보다 조용해요. — "The museum is quieter than the market."
  • 등산이 박물관보다 훨씬 더 힘들어요. — "Hiking is much more tiring than the museum."
  • 시장 투어가 박물관보다 더 재미있어요. The market tour is more fun than the museum. 시장 투어 + 이/가; 박물관 + 보다; 더 + 재미있다
  • 이 옵션이 저 옵션보다 가격이 훨씬 더 싸요. This option is much cheaper in price than that option. 훨씬 더 (strong intensifier) + 싸다

2. Superlatives with 가장/제일 and Classification with 중에서

Grammar — 가장/제일 and [list] 중에서

가장 and 제일 both mean "the most" and are placed directly before the descriptive verb or action verb being intensified. 가장 is slightly more formal and more common in writing; 제일 is common in everyday conversation. Both are interchangeable in this chapter's tasks unless a task specifically calls for formal style.

To specify the group being compared, use [list of options] 중에서 ("among ~") before the superlative expression. This frames the sentence as a classification: out of a defined set, one member is identified as best according to some quality.

  • 박물관, 시장 투어, 등산 중에서 저는 시장 투어가 가장 재미있다고 생각해요.
  • 이 세 가지 옵션 중에서 무엇이 제일 실용적이에요?
  • 세 옵션 중에서 등산이 가장 저렴해요. Among the three options, hiking is the cheapest. 세 옵션 (noun list) + 중에서 (classification frame); 가장 + 저렴하다
  • 저는 이 중에서 박물관이 제일 좋아요. Of these, I like the museum the most. 이 중에서 (demonstrative + classification); 제일 + 좋다

3. Stating and Justifying a Preference

Grammar — -는 게 더 낫다/좋다

-는 게 더 낫다/좋다 ("it is better to ~") attaches to an action-verb dictionary form and states that one course of action is preferable to another. 게 is a contracted, conversational form of 것이 ("the thing of ~ing"), so the pattern is recognized here as a fixed frame rather than fully analyzed as a nominalized clause, which is developed formally in later chapters.

This preference frame combines naturally with the reason-giving expressions from Chapter 11 (왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요, 그 이유는 ~이에요) to build a complete, supported recommendation.

  • 시장 투어에 가는 게 더 좋아요. — "It's better to go on the market tour."
  • 박물관에 가는 게 더 나아요. 왜냐하면 날씨와 상관없이 즐길 수 있기 때문이에요.
Building Block — The comparison-and-preference frame

[comparison: A가 B보다 (훨씬) 더 ~해요] + [superlative: (list) 중에서 A가 가장/제일 ~해요] + [preference: A에 가는/하는 게 더 낫다/좋다] + [reason: 왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요 / 그 이유는 ~이에요]

This frame lets learners compare two options directly, rank several options, state a preferred choice, and support that choice with a reason from Chapter 11 — the same supported-opinion structure applied to a comparative decision.

MarkerFunctionExample
보다compares two items directly ("than")시장이 박물관보다 시끄러워요.
더 / 훨씬 더intensifies a comparison훨씬 더 힘들어요.
가장 / 제일marks the superlative within a group가장 저렴해요.
중에서defines the group being compared세 옵션 중에서
-는 게 더 낫다/좋다states a preference between actions가는 게 더 좋아요.

You are expected to produce all five patterns above, combined with the reason-giving frames from Chapter 11, within this chapter's controlled tasks.

Practice — Recognizing comparison, superlative, and preference

  1. Read the Model Dialogue and underline every use of 보다, circle every use of 가장/제일, and box every use of -는 게 더 낫다/좋다.
  2. For each comparison you find, state in English exactly what two (or more) things are being compared.
  3. Identify one sentence where a preference is supported with a reason, and name both the preference frame and the reason frame used.

Model Dialogue

지영, 민준, 라일라, and 수아 compare three field trip options and try to reach a group recommendation.

Context: classroom, small group discussion before reporting back to the instructor. Everyday polite style, informal but respectful discussion between classmates.

라일라 저는 이 세 옵션 중에서 시장 투어가 가장 좋다고 생각해요. 한국어를 실제로 쓸 기회가 가장 많으니까요. Among these three options, I think the market tour is the best, because it gives us the most real opportunities to use Korean.
수아 저도 시장 투어에 동의해요. 그런데 박물관이 시장보다 조용해서 더 편할 수도 있어요. I also agree with the market tour. But the museum is quieter than the market, so it might be more comfortable.
민준 저는 등산이 가장 좋은 경험이 될 거라고 생각해요. 물론 등산이 박물관보다 훨씬 더 힘들지만, 특별한 경험이잖아요. I think hiking would be the best experience. Of course hiking is much more tiring than the museum, but it's a special experience, right?
지영 가격도 고려 사항이에요. 세 옵션 중에서 등산이 가장 저렴하지만, 모두가 등산을 좋아하는 건 아니에요. Price is also a factor to consider. Among the three options, hiking is the cheapest, but not everyone likes hiking.
라일라 그러면 시장 투어에 가는 게 더 낫지 않을까요? 언어 연습도 되고, 가격도 비슷하니까요. Then wouldn't it be better to go on the market tour? It gives us language practice, and the price is similar too.
수아 저도 그게 더 좋다고 생각해요. 투표해 볼까요? I think that's better too. Should we vote?

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. What reason does 라일라 give for preferring the market tour?
  2. What comparison does 수아 make between the museum and the market?
  3. What does 지영 point out about price, and what qualification does she add?
  4. What does the group ultimately lean toward preferring, and why?

Guided Practice

  1. Write five sentences comparing two familiar things using 보다 (for example: cities, foods, classes, seasons).
  2. Rewrite three of your sentences above using 훨씬 더 to strengthen the comparison.
  3. Choose three related items and write a superlative sentence for each using 중에서 and 가장 or 제일.
  4. For each superlative sentence above, add a preference sentence using -는 게 더 낫다/좋다 and a reason using 왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요 or 그 이유는 ~이에요.

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud at a measured pace. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.

Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

질문답
What is the advantage and disadvantage of the first laptop?______
What is true of the second laptop, and what is its drawback?______
What is said about the third laptop?______
Which laptop is recommended for students, and why?______

Reading Practice

Read the short comparison passage below, written by 민준 for the class discussion board, then answer the questions that follow.

Comprehension questions:

  1. What was 민준's initial preference, and what reason did he originally give?
  2. What made him reconsider his opinion?
  3. What is his final preference, and what reason does he give for it?
  4. Identify one use of 보다, one use of 가장, and one use of -는 게 더 낫다/좋다 in the passage.

Writing Workshop

This chapter's writing task asks you to compare three related options, identify the best one according to a clear standard, and justify your preference with a reason.

  1. Choose a topic. Pick three comparable options — for example, three restaurants, three ways to spend a weekend, or three study methods.
  2. Compare two options directly. Use A가 B보다 (훨씬) 더 ~해요 for at least one pair.
  3. Identify the best option. Use [list] 중에서 ~가 가장/제일 ~해요.
  4. State your preference. Use ~는 게 더 낫다/좋다.
  5. Give a reason. Use 왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요 or 그 이유는 ~이에요 from Chapter 11.
  6. Revise. Check your draft against the checklist below.

체크리스트 — Editing checklist:

  • The paragraph follows the comparison-and-preference frame: direct comparison, superlative, preference, reason.
  • 보다 is used to compare two specific items directly.
  • 가장 or 제일 is used with 중에서 to identify the best option among the full set.
  • -는 게 더 낫다/좋다 is used correctly to state a preference.
  • A reason-marking expression from Chapter 11 supports the preference logically.
  • Speech level is consistent throughout (everyday polite, unless your instructor assigns formal style).
  • Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears.
  • Spacing and particles are accurate throughout.
  • No grammar or vocabulary beyond Volume III, Chapters 1–12, appears productively.

Speaking Practice

통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 비교 문장 말하기

Take turns with a partner comparing two familiar items aloud using A가 B보다 더 ~해요, then identifying the best of three items using 중에서 ~가 가장/제일 ~해요.

의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 짝과 함께 옵션 비교하기

With a partner, discuss the three options you chose for the Writing Workshop. Compare them directly, agree on which one is best according to a shared standard, and each state a preference with a reason. Try to reach an agreed recommendation, as the group does in the Model Dialogue.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself comparing your three Writing Workshop options aloud: state one direct comparison, one superlative judgment, and one supported preference.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Group decisions and 다수결

In many Korean classroom, workplace, and community settings, a group discussion that compares options often concludes with an explicit group decision, sometimes reached by 다수결 ("majority vote") after each person has had a chance to state a preference and a reason. Ending a comparison discussion with a clear next step, such as 수아's suggestion to vote, is a common and expected way to bring the conversation to a close.

Culture in Context — Naming a shared standard before comparing

Korean comparison discussions in group settings, such as choosing a restaurant or a vendor, often begin by naming the 기준 ("standard" or "criterion") being used, such as price, quality, or convenience, before comparing the options against it. This makes the basis for the final choice explicit and easier for the whole group to agree on.

Register Awareness — 가장 versus 제일

가장 and 제일 are interchangeable in most everyday contexts, but 가장 is somewhat more common in formal writing, news, and academic contexts, while 제일 is more common in casual spoken conversation. Both are treated as productive and level-appropriate in this chapter; later volumes will refine the register distinction further.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Attaching 보다 to the wrong noun

Error: Writing 박물관보다가 시장이 재미있어요., attaching 보다 to the item being described instead of the item being compared against.

Correction: 보다 always attaches to the standard of comparison, not the subject: 시장이 박물관보다 재미있어요. ("The market is more fun than the museum.")

Common Mistake — Using 가장/제일 without a clear group

Error: Writing 시장 투어가 가장 좋아요. with no indication of what it is being compared against, leaving the superlative claim unclear.

Correction: Name the group with 중에서 when the comparison set is not already obvious from context: 세 옵션 중에서 시장 투어가 가장 좋아요.

Common Mistake — Stating a preference with no reason

Error: Writing only 시장 투어에 가는 게 더 좋아요. and stopping there, as in Chapter 11's caution against unsupported opinions.

Correction: Add a reason, as required by this chapter's tasks: 시장 투어에 가는 게 더 좋아요. 왜냐하면 한국어를 쓸 기회가 가장 많기 때문이에요.

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. 라일라 prefers the market tour because it offers the most real opportunities to use Korean.
  2. 수아 notes that the museum is quieter than the market, which might make it more comfortable.
  3. 지영 points out that hiking is the cheapest of the three options, but adds that not everyone enjoys hiking.
  4. The group leans toward the market tour, since it combines language practice with a price similar to the other options.

Listening comprehension

  • The first laptop is much cheaper than the second, but its battery does not last long.
  • The second laptop has the best quality, but it is the most expensive of the three.
  • The third laptop has similar price and quality, giving it good balance.
  • The third laptop is recommended for students because of its good balance between price and quality.

Reading comprehension

  1. 민준 initially preferred hiking because he thought it would create a special memory, even though it is much more tiring than the museum.
  2. Talking with friends made him realize the market tour also had many advantages.
  3. His final preference is the market tour, because it offers the most opportunities to use Korean, which matches the class's goal of improving Korean ability.
  4. Sample answer: 보다 — 등산은 박물관보다 훨씬 더 힘들지만; 가장 — 한국어를 실제로 쓸 기회가 가장 많고; -는 게 더 낫다/좋다 — 시장 투어에 가는 게 더 낫다고 생각해요.

Chapter Review — Section B

1. Sample answer: 기차가 버스보다 빨라요. / 기차가 버스보다 훨씬 더 빨라요.

2. Sample answer: 이 세 식당 중에서 이 식당이 가장 맛있어요.

3. Sample answer: 저는 집에서 공부하는 게 더 나아요. 왜냐하면 더 조용하기 때문이에요.

Section D — Sample response

저는 세 가지 공부 방법을 비교해 봤어요. 혼자 공부하는 것이 그룹으로 공부하는 것보다 더 조용해요. 하지만 온라인 강의, 혼자 공부, 그룹 스터디 중에서 그룹 스터디가 가장 도움이 많이 돼요. 그래서 저는 그룹으로 공부하는 게 더 낫다고 생각해요. 그 이유는 서로 질문하고 설명하면서 더 잘 이해할 수 있기 때문이에요.

Check that: the paragraph follows the comparison–superlative–preference–reason frame, uses 보다 correctly for a direct comparison, uses 중에서 with 가장/제일 for the superlative judgment, and supports the stated preference with a Chapter 11 reason-marking expression.

Looking Ahead

지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now

You can compare two options directly, identify the best option among several, state a preference, and support that preference with a reason, both in writing and in spoken discussion. These skills prepare you for Chapter 13, where you will extend this ability to explain data and numbers, using percentages, statistics, and formal quantity language to support comparisons with concrete evidence.

Chapter 13자료와 숫자 설명

Chapter 13 continues Unit III, 의견, 근거, 그리고 자료 (Opinion, Evidence, and Data), introducing percentages, statistics, charts, and formal quantity language as new productive systems for explaining data.
