토론과 반론Discussion and Counterpoints

Turn-taking, respectful disagreement, asking for clarification, and participating in a moderated debate · Speak and Write Korean: Independent Communication and Advanced Expression

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Use vocabulary for discussion, argument, and moderated debate, including 주장, 근거, 반론, and 발언권.
  2. Take a turn politely and hold the floor using frames such as 제 생각을 말씀드려도 될까요?
  3. Interrupt or enter a discussion respectfully using 말씀 중에 죄송한데요.
  4. Express disagreement without causing offense, using softened frames such as 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요 and -다고 생각하지 않아요.
  5. Ask for clarification using 무슨 말씀이신지 잘 모르겠어요 and 다시 한번 설명해 주시겠어요?
  6. Concede a partial point while still maintaining a position, using -기는 하지만 and -더라도.
  7. Combine reason (Ch. 11), comparison (Ch. 12), and data (Ch. 13) frames inside a live, turn-taking discussion.
  8. Follow the basic structure of a short moderated debate: opening position, turn-taking, counterpoint, clarification, and closing summary.

This chapter introduces turn-taking, disagreement, clarification-request, and concession language as new productive systems for live discussion. It builds directly on the reason-marking (Ch. 11), comparison and preference (Ch. 12), and data-and-source frames (Ch. 13) already active, using them as the content that speakers exchange, disagree with, and clarify. It does not introduce new speech levels, new honorific systems, or unscheduled vocabulary domains.

Opening Scenario

With the data from Chapter 13 in hand, the instructor has organized a short in-class debate: should the class's semester project be a shared presentation or four separate individual presentations? 지영, 민준, 라일라, and 수아 are assigned to argue different sides, and the instructor moderates, reminding students to take turns, respond directly to what the last speaker said, and ask for clarification instead of guessing when something is unclear. 민준 tends to interrupt eagerly; 라일라 wants to make sure everyone is heard fairly; 수아 is not sure how to disagree without sounding rude.

  1. You will build vocabulary for argument, discussion, and moderated debate.
  2. You will learn to take turns politely, disagree respectfully, ask for clarification, and concede a partial point.
  3. You will combine reason, comparison, and data language from earlier chapters inside a live, turn-taking discussion.

발음 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation — Rising and falling intonation in disagreement and clarification

Softened disagreement, such as 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요, typically ends with a gentle rising-then-leveling intonation on -는데요, signaling that the speaker is leaving room for a response rather than closing the discussion. A flat, falling intonation on the same sentence can sound more final and less inviting of reply; practice both and notice the difference.

Clarification questions such as 다시 한번 설명해 주시겠어요? use rising intonation typical of polite requests, recycled from earlier request patterns. Practice the batchim liaison in 끼어들다 and 덧붙이다, where the final consonant of one syllable links smoothly into the following vowel-initial syllable.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter introduces turn-taking, disagreement, clarification-request, and concession language as new productive systems, and connects them to the reason, comparison, and data frames already active from Chapters 11 through 13.

1. Taking a Turn and Holding the Floor

Grammar — Requesting and yielding the floor

To ask for a turn to speak, use a polite permission-request frame: 제 생각을 말씀드려도 될까요? ("May I share my thought?"). To enter a discussion already underway, soften the interruption with 말씀 중에 죄송한데요 ("Sorry to interrupt while you're speaking"), followed by the new point. To yield the floor to someone else, use 먼저 말씀하세요 ("Please go ahead") or 계속하세요 ("Please continue").

  • 사회자: 이제 다음 분 말씀해 주시겠어요? — "Moderator: Would the next person like to speak now?"
  • 말씀 중에 죄송한데요, 저도 그 점에 대해 말씀드리고 싶어요. — "Sorry to interrupt while you're speaking, but I'd like to say something about that point too."
  • 제 의견을 말씀드려도 될까요? May I share my opinion? 말씀드리다 (humble) + -아/어도 되다 (permission, recycled)
  • 발언권을 주셔서 감사합니다. Thank you for giving me the floor. 발언권 + 을/를 주다 (formal discussion routine)

2. Disagreeing Respectfully

Grammar — Softened disagreement frames

Direct disagreement can sound abrupt in Korean discussion, so learners should soften a counterpoint rather than state it bluntly. 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요 ("I think about it a little differently") and 그 점에는 동의하지만 ("I agree with that point, but...") acknowledge the other speaker before introducing the counterpoint. -다고 생각하지 않아요 negates a claim gently by framing it as the speaker's own view rather than a flat correction.

These frames typically combine with the reason-marking expressions from Chapter 11 (왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요) so that a disagreement is always supported, not merely asserted.

  • 저는 그 의견에 반대해요. 왜냐하면 시간이 부족하기 때문이에요. — "I disagree with that opinion, because there isn't enough time."
  • 그 말씀도 맞지만, 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요. — "That's true too, but I think about it a little differently."
  • 저는 발표를 나눠서 하는 게 더 낫다고 생각하지 않아요. I don't think it's better to split up the presentation. -는 게 더 낫다 (Ch. 12) + -다고 생각하지 않아요 (softened negation)
  • 그 점에는 동의하지만, 근거가 충분하지 않은 것 같아요. I agree with that point, but I don't think the evidence is sufficient. 동의하다 + -지만 (concession, recycled from Ch. 11)

3. Asking for Clarification

Grammar — Requesting clarification without guessing

When a point is unclear, ask directly rather than guessing at meaning. 무슨 말씀이신지 잘 모르겠어요 ("I'm not quite sure what you mean") is a polite, honorific-toned way to admit confusion about another speaker's point. 다시 한번 설명해 주시겠어요? ("Could you explain that once more?") requests a repeated or expanded explanation, recycling the -아/어 주시겠어요? request pattern.

  • 죄송한데, 방금 하신 말씀을 다시 한번 설명해 주시겠어요? — "Sorry, could you explain what you just said once more?"
  • 그 근거가 무슨 뜻인지 좀 더 명확하게 말씀해 주시겠어요? — "Could you state more clearly what that evidence means?"
  • 제가 오해했을 수도 있는데, 다시 설명해 주시겠어요? I may have misunderstood — could you explain again? 오해하다 + -았/었을 수도 있다 (softened admission)

4. Conceding a Point While Holding a Position: -기는 하지만, -더라도

Grammar — Concession connectors

-기는 하지만 concedes that part of the other speaker's point is true while still introducing a counterpoint, extending the contrastive function of -지만 from Chapter 11. -더라도 ("even if") concedes a hypothetical or extreme case and states that the speaker's position still holds regardless. Both connectors let a speaker sound reasonable and open-minded without abandoning their own 주장.

  • 시간이 부족하기는 하지만, 발표 하나로 준비하는 게 더 효율적이에요. — "It's true that time is limited, but preparing one shared presentation is more efficient."
  • 발표 주제가 다르더라도, 결론은 같은 방향으로 정리할 수 있어요. — "Even if the presentation topics are different, the conclusions can still be organized in the same direction."
  • 그 근거가 흥미롭기는 하지만, 자료가 충분하지 않아요. That evidence is interesting, but the data isn't sufficient. 흥미롭다 + -기는 하지만 (concession)
  • 아무리 바쁘더라도 발언권은 골고루 나눠야 해요. Even if everyone is busy, the floor should be shared fairly. 아무리 ~ -더라도 (even if, emphatic concession)
Building Block — The turn-taking-and-counterpoint frame

[turn request: 제 생각을 말씀드려도 될까요? / 말씀 중에 죄송한데요] + [acknowledge: 그 점에는 동의하지만 / -기는 하지만] + [counterpoint, using Ch. 11–13 reason/comparison/data: 왜냐하면 ~ 때문이에요 / A가 B보다 더 ~해요 / 이 자료에 따르면 ~] + [clarification if needed: 무슨 말씀이신지 잘 모르겠어요 / 다시 설명해 주시겠어요?]

This frame lets learners enter a discussion politely, acknowledge what was said, introduce a supported counterpoint using earlier reason, comparison, and data language, and request clarification when needed — combining this chapter's new systems with three chapters of prior evidence-based reasoning.

MarkerFunctionExample
말씀 중에 죄송한데요enters a discussion politely말씀 중에 죄송한데요, 저도...

-기는 하지만concedes part of a point맞기는 하지만...

You are expected to produce all patterns above, combined with the reason, comparison, and data frames from Chapters 11 through 13, within this chapter's controlled tasks.

Practice — Recognizing discussion and debate language

  1. Read the Model Dialogue and underline every turn-taking expression, circle every softened disagreement, and box every clarification request.
  2. For each concession connector you find (-기는 하지만 or -더라도), state in English what point is being conceded and what counterpoint follows.
  3. Identify one sentence where a disagreement is supported with a reason, comparison, or data frame from an earlier chapter, and name the frame.

Model Dialogue

지영, 민준, 라일라, and 수아 debate the semester project format with the instructor moderating.

Context: classroom, moderated small-group debate. Everyday polite style, respectful but direct disagreement between classmates, with the instructor acting as 사회자.

사회자 그러면 지영 씨부터 입장을 말씀해 주시겠어요? Then would 지영 like to state her position first?
지영 네, 저는 발표를 하나로 합치는 게 더 낫다고 생각해요. 왜냐하면 그렇게 하면 준비 시간이 줄기 때문이에요. Yes, I think it's better to combine it into one presentation, because doing so reduces preparation time.
민준 말씀 중에 죄송한데요, 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요. 개인 발표가 각자의 관점을 더 잘 보여 줄 수 있어요. Sorry to interrupt, but I think about it a little differently. Individual presentations can show each person's perspective better.
사회자 민준 씨, 발언권을 드릴게요. 계속하세요. 민준, I'll give you the floor. Please continue.
민준 지영 씨 말씀도 맞기는 하지만, 13과에서 본 자료에 따르면 학생들은 개인 발표에서 더 적극적으로 참여했어요. What 지영 said is true, but according to the data we saw in Chapter 13, students participated more actively in individual presentations.
라일라 죄송한데, 그 자료가 무슨 뜻인지 좀 더 명확하게 설명해 주시겠어요? Sorry, could you explain more clearly what that data means?
민준 네, 조사에 따르면 개인 발표를 한 학생의 참여도가 그룹 발표를 한 학생보다 더 높았다는 뜻이에요. Yes, it means that the participation level of students who did individual presentations was higher than that of students who did group presentations.
수아 저는 그 결과에 동의하지만, 준비 시간이 부족하기는 하지만 발표 날짜를 조금 늦추면 되지 않을까요? I agree with that result, but even though preparation time is limited, couldn't we just push back the presentation date a little?
지영 아무리 날짜를 늦추더라도 개인 발표는 시간이 네 배 더 필요해요. 저는 여전히 하나로 합치는 게 더 효율적이라고 생각해요. Even if we push back the date, individual presentations still need four times as much time. I still think combining it into one is more efficient.
사회자 좋은 토론이었어요. 그러면 오늘 나온 의견을 요약해 볼까요? That was a good discussion. Shall we summarize the opinions raised today?

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. What is 지영's position, and what reason does she give?
  2. How does 민준 enter the discussion, and what counterpoint does he raise?
  3. What does 라일라 ask for, and why?
  4. What does 수아 concede, and what does she still propose?
  5. What concession connector does 지영 use in her final turn, and what position does she still hold?

Guided Practice

  1. Write three sentences requesting the floor or entering a discussion politely.
  2. Rewrite three claims so that each is softened using 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요 or -다고 생각하지 않아요.
  3. Write two sentences asking for clarification about a classmate's point.
  4. Write two sentences that concede a partial point using -기는 하지만 and two using -더라도.
  5. Combine one disagreement above with a reason (Ch. 11), comparison (Ch. 12), or data (Ch. 13) sentence to support your counterpoint.

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud at a measured pace. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.

Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

질문답
What did the side in favor argue?______
What counterargument did the opposing side raise?______
How did the moderator manage the discussion?______
What conclusion did the student council reach?______

Reading Practice

Read the short debate summary below, written by 라일라 after the class discussion, then answer the questions that follow.

Comprehension questions:

  1. What is 지영's position, and what reason does she give?
  2. What counterargument does 민준 raise, and what evidence supports it?
  3. What clarification does 라일라 request, and how is it resolved?
  4. Identify one use of -기는 하지만, one use of -더라도, and one softened disagreement in the passage.

Writing Workshop

This chapter's writing task asks you to summarize a discussion, presenting at least two positions, a counterpoint, a clarification, and a conclusion, using the reason, comparison, and data frames from Chapters 11 through 13.

  1. Choose or invent a debate topic. For example, a class decision, a school policy, or a small group disagreement.
  2. State the first position. Use 주장하다 and a reason from Chapter 11.
  3. Introduce a counterpoint. Use a softened disagreement frame and support it with a comparison (Ch. 12) or data (Ch. 13) frame.
  4. Include a clarification moment. Show one speaker asking for and receiving clarification.
  5. Concede a partial point. Use -기는 하지만 or -더라도 before restating a position.
  6. Draw a conclusion. Summarize what was decided or what remains unresolved.
  7. Revise. Check your draft against the checklist below.

체크리스트 — Editing checklist:

  • The paragraph follows the position–counterpoint–clarification–concession–conclusion structure.
  • At least one softened disagreement frame is used correctly.
  • At least one clarification request appears and is answered.
  • -기는 하지만 or -더라도 is used correctly to concede a point.
  • At least one counterpoint is supported by a reason, comparison, or data frame from Chapters 11–13.
  • Speech level is consistent throughout (everyday polite, unless your instructor assigns formal style).
  • Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears.
  • Spacing and particles are accurate throughout.
  • No grammar or vocabulary beyond Volume III, Chapters 1–14, appears productively.

Speaking Practice

통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 토론 표현 연습하기

Take turns with a partner practicing the turn-taking, disagreement, and clarification frames from this chapter using short prompts your instructor provides (for example, "should class start earlier?").

의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 짝과 함께 소규모 토론하기

With a partner or small group, choose a simple topic and hold a short moderated discussion of at least six turns. Each speaker must take the floor politely, respond to the previous turn, and at least one speaker must ask for clarification. One participant should act as 사회자.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself presenting both sides of a simple debate topic alone, including at least one turn-taking phrase, one softened disagreement, one clarification request, and one concession connector.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Softening disagreement to preserve harmony

In many Korean classroom, workplace, and community discussions, direct disagreement is often softened by first acknowledging what the other speaker said, using frames such as 그 말씀도 맞지만, before introducing a counterpoint. This does not mean disagreement is avoided altogether — it means the disagreement is framed in a way that preserves the relationship and allows the discussion to continue productively.

Culture in Context — The moderator's role in fair turn-taking

Building on the group-decision and data-based reasoning from Chapters 12 and 13, many Korean classroom and institutional discussions rely on a designated moderator (사회자) to distribute the floor fairly, especially when some participants tend to speak more readily than others. Asking the moderator for the floor, as in 발언권을 주시겠어요?, is a common and expected way to enter a structured discussion.

Register Awareness — 반박하다 versus everyday disagreement phrases

반박하다 ("to rebut") is common in formal debate, academic, and news contexts, while everyday classroom disagreement more often uses softened frames like 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요. Both are treated as productive and level-appropriate in this chapter; Volume IV will refine formal debate and argumentation register further.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Disagreeing without acknowledging the other speaker

Error: Responding to a classmate's point with only 아니요, 그건 틀렸어요., which can sound abrupt and close off discussion.

Correction: Acknowledge the point first, then introduce the counterpoint: 그 말씀도 일리가 있지만, 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요. ("That does make some sense, but I think about it a little differently.")

Common Mistake — Guessing instead of asking for clarification

Error: Responding to an unclear point by guessing at its meaning and building a counterargument on a misunderstanding.

Correction: Ask directly before responding: 죄송한데, 무슨 말씀이신지 다시 한번 설명해 주시겠어요? ("Sorry, could you explain once more what you mean?")

Common Mistake — Using -더라도 and -지만 interchangeably

Error: Writing 시간이 부족더라도 준비했어요. to describe a real, already-known situation, when the situation is factual rather than hypothetical.

Correction: Use -지만 or -기는 하지만 for a known, factual contrast: 시간이 부족하기는 하지만 준비했어요. Reserve -더라도 for hypothetical or extreme "even if" cases: 아무리 시간이 부족하더라도 준비할 거예요.

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. 지영 believes combining the presentations into one is better, because it reduces preparation time.
  2. 민준 enters with "말씀 중에 죄송한데요" and counters that individual presentations show each person's perspective better, later supporting this with Chapter 13's participation data.
  3. 라일라 asks for clarification about what the participation data actually means; 민준 explains that individually-presenting students participated more actively than group-presenting students.
  4. 수아 concedes that preparation time is limited but proposes pushing back the presentation date to solve the problem.
  5. 지영 uses -더라도 ("아무리 날짜를 늦추더라도") and still holds that combining the presentations into one is more efficient.

Listening comprehension

  • The side in favor argued that library hours should be extended during exam periods.
  • The opposing side countered that, even though the budget is limited, hiring new night-shift staff would be a problem.
  • The moderator distributed the floor fairly between both sides, and participants exchanged views respectfully.
  • The student council concluded that library hours would be extended only during exam periods, reflecting both positions.

Reading comprehension

  1. 지영's position is that combining presentations into one is more efficient, because preparation time is reduced.
  2. 민준 counters with data from Chapter 13 showing that individually-presenting students had higher participation.
  3. 라일라 asks for clarification on what the data means; 민준 explains it clearly, and the discussion continues.
  4. Sample answer: -기는 하지만 — 준비 시간이 부족하기는 하지만; -더라도 — 날짜를 늦추더라도; softened disagreement — 좀 다르게 생각한다고 말하면서.

Chapter Review — Section B

1. Sample answer: 제 생각을 말씀드려도 될까요? / 말씀 중에 죄송한데요, 저도 의견이 있어요.

2. Sample answer: 저는 좀 다르게 생각하는데요. / 방금 하신 말씀을 다시 한번 설명해 주시겠어요?

3. Sample answer: 그 자료가 흥미롭기는 하지만, 표본이 작아서 신뢰하기 어려워요. / 아무리 시간이 부족하더라도 발표 준비는 끝까지 마쳐야 해요.

Section D — Sample response

Check that: the paragraph follows the position–counterpoint–clarification–concession–conclusion frame, uses at least one softened disagreement frame and one clarification request, uses -기는 하지만 or -더라도 correctly, and supports the counterpoint with a reason, comparison, or data frame from Chapters 11–13.

Looking Ahead

지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now

You can take a turn politely, disagree respectfully, ask for clarification, concede a partial point while holding your position, and combine these skills with the reason, comparison, and data frames from earlier chapters to participate in a live, moderated discussion. These skills prepare you for Chapter 15, where you will bring reason, comparison, data, and discussion skills together in a single evidence-based Unit III assessment.

Chapter 15종합 과제 3: 근거 있는 주장

Chapter 15 closes Unit III, 의견, 근거, 그리고 자료 (Opinion, Evidence, and Data), with a synthesis assessment in which learners present a supported position using evidence, combining reason, comparison, data, and discussion skills from Chapters 11 through 14.
