B2에서 C1로: 정확성과 격식From B2 to C1: Precision and Register

Moving from independent B2 communication toward C1-oriented precision, formal stance, and paragraph discipline · Speak and Write Korean: Professional, Academic, Media, and Institutional Korean

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish everyday polite Korean from formal deferential Korean, and choose the appropriate register for a given setting, audience, and purpose.
  2. Identify and correct register inconsistency within a single spoken or written passage.
  3. Use expanded formal-stance vocabulary to describe precision, accuracy, and appropriateness in language use.
  4. Organize a short formal paragraph with a stated main idea, supporting detail, and a controlled conclusion.
  5. Read and interpret a short formal notice or announcement written in consistent deferential style.
  6. Explain, using accurate terminology, what changes and what stays the same when moving from B2 independent communication to C1-oriented precision.

This chapter opens Volume IV. It introduces no unfamiliar particles, endings, or sentence architecture. Its task is to sharpen control of systems already active — especially the deferential -습니다 style, paragraph organization, and register consistency — so that they can support the formal, academic, media, and institutional work that follows.

Opening Scenario

지영, 민준, 라일라, and 수아 have finished Volume III and begin their first class of Volume IV together. Their instructor returns their B2 portfolios with a short written comment on each: strong control of everyday polite Korean and connected paragraphs, but noticeably inconsistent register whenever the writing turns formal. She explains that Volume IV will not teach a new kind of Korean so much as sharpen the Korean they already have — training them to notice exactly where a sentence sits between casual, everyday polite, and fully formal, and to hold one register steady across an entire paragraph rather than drifting partway through. As a first exercise, she asks each student to revise one paragraph from their Chapter 19 writing so that it reads as consistently formal from the first sentence to the last. 라일라, remembering her own self-assessment from Chapter 20, decides this is exactly the challenge she asked to work on next.

  1. You will learn to distinguish everyday polite Korean from formal deferential Korean with precision.
  2. You will practice locating and correcting register inconsistency in your own writing and speech.
  3. You will organize a short formal paragraph with clear internal discipline.

Receptive Vocabulary — Describing Register Analytically

The following items are receptive. Learners recognize them in the instructor's feedback and in this chapter's explanations; they are not assessed as an independent productive set.

KoreanMeaningStatus
문체writing style, prose stylereceptive, academic term
격식체formal/deferential speech stylereceptive, analytical label

These terms support recognition of style-analysis language used in feedback and instruction. They are not assessed productively in this chapter.

발음 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation — Steady, even delivery in formal register

This chapter introduces no new sound-change rule. It refines an existing skill: producing the deferential -습니다/-습니까 ending with steady, unhurried articulation, rather than the slightly faster, more contracted rhythm often used with everyday polite -아요/어요 speech.

When reading a formal sentence aloud, let the voice settle slightly on the final syllable of -습니다 rather than trailing off. A steady final syllable is one of the clearest audible signals that a speaker is maintaining formal register, even before the listener processes the words themselves.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter refines register control, formal stance, and paragraph discipline. It does not introduce new particles, endings, or clause structures beyond what Volume III has already activated. The task is precision: using familiar systems more deliberately and more consistently.

1. Two Productive Registers, One Sentence at a Time

Review and refinement — everyday polite vs. formal deferential style

Korean learners at this stage already control two productive speech levels: everyday polite -아요/어요 and formal deferential -습니다/-습니까. The C1-oriented skill is not learning a third style — it is learning to keep a single register unbroken across an entire text or presentation, even in sentences that would be easy to soften.

  • 이 자료는 정확합니다.This data is accurate. (consistent formal)
  • 이 자료는 정확해요.This data is accurate. (consistent everyday polite)
  • 이 자료는 정확합니다. 그런데 정말 그런 것 같아요.This data is accurate. But it does seem that way. — register drifts mid-passage; avoid this pattern in formal writing.

2. Formal Stance Vocabulary — Talking About Precision Itself

New productive frame — describing accuracy and appropriateness

This chapter's new vocabulary lets learners talk about their own language use with more precision. Combine 정확성, 일관되다, and 적절하다 with familiar predicate endings already active since Volume II and III.

  • 이 문단은 격식이 일관되지 않습니다.This paragraph's formality is not consistent.이 문단은 [topic] + 격식이 [subject] + 일관되지 않습니다 [neg. formal]
  • 그 표현은 이 상황에 적절하지 않아요.That expression is not appropriate for this situation.

3. Paragraph Discipline — Main Sentence, Support, Conclusion

Review and expansion — formal paragraph organization (building on Ch. 18–20, Vol. III)

A disciplined formal paragraph states its main idea early, supports it with one or two specific details or reasons, and closes with a sentence that draws a conclusion rather than trailing off. Compare a loosely organized paragraph with a disciplined one.

Loose — no clear discipline요즘 회사들이 재택근무를 많이 해요. 저도 그런 것 같아요. 편한 점도 있고 불편한 점도 있어요.
Disciplined — stated, supported, concluded최근 많은 기업이 재택근무 제도를 도입하고 있습니다. 이는 통근 시간 감소와 업무 집중도 향상이라는 근거로 뒷받침됩니다. 따라서 재택근무는 이번 학기 보고서의 중요한 주제라고 결론지을 수 있습니다.
Building Block — The disciplined formal paragraph

[중심 문장 — main sentence] + [근거/뒷받침 — supporting detail, 1–2 sentences] + [결론 문장 — concluding sentence] = 격식 있는 문단

최근 많은 기업이 재택근무 제도를 도입하고 있습니다. 이는 통근 시간 감소와 업무 집중도 향상이라는 근거로 뒷받침됩니다. 따라서 재택근무는 중요한 주제라고 결론지을 수 있습니다.

Many companies are recently adopting remote-work systems. This is supported by reduced commute time and improved focus. Therefore, remote work can be concluded to be an important topic.

Practice — Register and paragraph discipline

  1. Rewrite 이 자료는 정확해요. 그런데 문제가 좀 있는 것 같아요. so that both sentences use consistent formal register.
  2. Identify the main sentence, the supporting sentence, and the concluding sentence in the Building Block example above.
  3. Write one original three-sentence formal paragraph about a topic of your choice, following the main-support-conclusion pattern.
  4. Underline the word or phrase in your paragraph that could most easily slip into casual register, and explain why you kept it formal.

Model Dialogue

지영 and 라일라 meet with their instructor, 박 교수님, to discuss register consistency in their revised Chapter 19 writing.

Context: an office-hours conversation between students and an instructor. Formal deferential register is expected throughout, since this is an academic consultation.

박 교수님 두 사람 글을 읽어 봤는데요, 전체적으로 잘 썼습니다. 그런데 문단 중간에 말투가 바뀌는 부분이 있습니다. I read both of your pieces of writing — overall, they're well written. However, there are places where the tone changes in the middle of a paragraph.
지영 아, 정말요? 저는 격식체로 계속 썼다고 생각했는데요. Ah, really? I thought I had written consistently in formal style.
박 교수님 여기 이 문장을 보세요. "이 정책은 효과적입니다. 그런데 문제도 있는 것 같아요." 앞 문장은 격식체인데 뒤 문장은 갑자기 일상적인 말투로 바뀌었습니다. Look at this sentence here. "This policy is effective. But there does seem to be a problem." The first sentence is formal, but the second one suddenly shifts to everyday tone.
지영 아, 정말 그렇네요. "문제도 있는 것 같습니다"로 고치면 되겠죠? Ah, you're right. I could fix it to "there does seem to be a problem" (formal), right?
박 교수님 네, 정확합니다. 라일라 씨는 어떻습니까? 자기 평가에서 이 부분을 연습하고 싶다고 하셨죠. Yes, that's exactly right. How about you, 라일라? You said in your self-assessment that you wanted to practice this.
라일라 네, 맞습니다. 저는 발표를 시작할 때는 격식체를 쓰는데, 질문에 답할 때 자꾸 편한 말투로 바뀝니다. Yes, that's right. I use formal style when starting a presentation, but it keeps shifting to a casual tone when I answer questions.
박 교수님 이번 학기에는 문단 하나를 통째로 점검하는 연습을 자주 할 겁니다. 한 문장씩이 아니라 전체 흐름을 확인하는 것이 중요합니다. This semester, we'll practice checking one whole paragraph at a time often. It's important to check the entire flow, not just sentence by sentence.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. What specific problem does 박 교수님 identify in 지영's writing?
  2. How does 지영 propose to fix her sentence?
  3. What register problem does 라일라 say she still has?
  4. What kind of checking does 박 교수님 say the class will practice this semester?

Guided Practice

  1. Read a paragraph you wrote in Volume III, Chapter 19 or 20, and underline every predicate ending.
  2. Mark each ending as either 격식체 (formal) or 일상 (everyday polite).
  3. If your paragraph mixes the two, choose one register and rewrite every marked ending to match it.
  4. Write one sentence explaining, in English, which register you chose and why it fits your paragraph's purpose.

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud at a measured pace. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.

Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

Comprehension questions:

  1. What is the stated goal of the workshop?
  2. What must participants submit before the workshop, and what happens during the workshop itself?
  3. What specific skill does the notice say the workshop will focus on?
  4. What is the deadline and the enrollment policy?

Writing Workshop

This chapter's writing task asks you to revise one paragraph for register consistency and paragraph discipline, then write one new formal paragraph from scratch.

  1. Select a paragraph. Choose one paragraph you wrote in Volume III, Chapter 19 or 20.
  2. Mark every ending. Underline each predicate ending and label it 격식체 or 일상.
  3. Choose one register. Decide whether the paragraph should be fully formal or fully everyday polite, based on its original purpose.
  4. Revise for consistency. Rewrite every ending to match your chosen register, without changing the paragraph's meaning.
  5. Write a new formal paragraph. On a topic of your choice, write a three-sentence formal paragraph following the 중심 문장–근거–결론 pattern from the Building Block above.
  6. Check the whole, not just the sentence. Read your new paragraph aloud once, checking that register is unbroken from first word to last.

체크리스트 — Checklist:

  • Every predicate ending in the revised paragraph matches the same register.
  • The new paragraph has a clear main sentence, supporting detail, and conclusion.
  • No sentence relies on vocabulary or grammar beyond Volume III, Chapters 1–20.
  • Spacing, particles, and Hangeul spelling are accurate throughout.
  • Only Hangeul is used; no romanization appears.

Speaking Practice

통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 문장 바꾸기

Say each sentence pair from the Grammar section aloud, once in everyday polite style and once in formal deferential style, without mixing the two within a single sentence.

의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 문단 점검하기

Read your revised paragraph from the Writing Workshop aloud to a partner or recording. Ask your partner (or listen back yourself) to flag any moment where the register seems to shift.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself reading both your original and revised paragraphs. Listen back and note, in English, exactly where the original version drifted in register and how the revision fixed it.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Register consistency as a marker of formal competence

In many Korean academic and professional settings, consistent register across a full document or presentation is treated as a basic marker of care and competence, distinct from vocabulary range or grammatical complexity. A short, simple piece of writing in one steady register is often viewed more favorably than a more ambitious piece that shifts tone partway through.

Culture in Context — Feedback in academic consultation

Office-hours or consultation feedback in many Korean academic settings is often direct about specific line-level issues while remaining encouraging about the work overall, as modeled in this chapter's dialogue.

Regional Awareness — Expectations for register discipline vary by institution

The precise strictness of register expectations can vary between universities, workplaces, and individual instructors or supervisors. The standard modeled in this chapter reflects a common, broadly applicable expectation for formal academic and professional writing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Mixing registers within one paragraph

Error: 이 정책은 효과적입니다. 그런데 문제도 있는 것 같아요.

Correction: 이 정책은 효과적입니다. 그런데 문제도 있는 것 같습니다. — check every sentence in a formal paragraph, not just the first one.

Common Mistake — Treating register as a single word choice rather than a whole-passage pattern

Error: Fixing one sentence's ending and assuming the whole paragraph is now consistent.

Correction: Underline and check every predicate ending in a passage before considering it revised for register.

Common Mistake — Writing a paragraph with no clear main sentence

Error: 요즘 회사들이 재택근무를 많이 해요. 저도 그런 것 같아요. — no clear claim, support, or conclusion.

Correction: State a main sentence first, support it with one or two specific details, and close with a sentence that draws a conclusion, following the 중심 문장–근거–결론 pattern.

Chapter Review

Section A — 어휘 (Vocabulary)

1. Give the meaning of 정확성, 일관되다, and 뒷받침하다, and use each in an original sentence.

2. Explain the difference between 수정하다 and 점검하다.

Section B — 문법 (Grammar)

1. Rewrite the following so that both sentences use consistent formal register: 이 자료는 정확해요. 그런데 문제도 있는 것 같습니다.

2. Identify the main sentence, supporting sentence, and concluding sentence in a paragraph of your choice from this chapter.

Section C — 독해 이해 (Reading Comprehension)

1. Summarize the writing-workshop notice in three or four English sentences, including its goal, its requirement, and its deadline.

Section D — 쓰기 (Writing)

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. 박 교수님 identifies that 지영's writing shifts from formal to everyday register in the middle of a paragraph.
  2. 지영 proposes changing 있는 것 같아요 to 있는 것 같습니다 to restore formal register.
  3. 라일라 says her register shifts from formal to casual specifically when she answers questions after a formal presentation opening.
  4. 박 교수님 says the class will practice checking one whole paragraph at a time, focusing on overall flow rather than single sentences.

Listening comprehension

  • The semester's goal is not learning new grammar.
  • The ability to distinguish formal and everyday register is especially important.
  • The segment recommends developing the habit of checking the flow of a whole paragraph or text, not just individual sentences.
  • This precision will support institutional language, media analysis, and academic writing later in the volume.

Reading comprehension

  1. The workshop's goal is to improve the accuracy and consistency of formal-style writing.
  2. Participants must submit one piece of writing in advance; during the workshop, they divide into small groups to review each other's writing.
  3. The notice says the workshop will focus especially on checking that tone does not change within a paragraph.
  4. The deadline is this Friday, at the department office; enrollment is capped at 20 and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Chapter Review — Section B

1. Corrected: 이 자료는 정확합니다. 그런데 문제도 있는 것 같습니다.

2. Sample analysis of the Building Block example: main sentence — 최근 많은 기업이 재택근무 제도를 도입하고 있습니다.; supporting sentence — 이는 통근 시간 감소와 업무 집중도 향상이라는 근거로 뒷받침됩니다.; concluding sentence — 따라서 재택근무는 중요한 주제라고 결론지을 수 있습니다.

Section D — Sample response

Sample new paragraph: 최근 많은 학생들이 온라인 강의를 선택하고 있습니다. 이는 시간 활용의 편리함과 반복 학습이 가능하다는 근거로 뒷받침됩니다. 따라서 온라인 강의는 앞으로도 계속 늘어날 것이라고 결론지을 수 있습니다.

Check that: every ending in the paragraph matches one register, the paragraph has a clear main sentence, support, and conclusion, and no vocabulary or grammar beyond the activated scope appears.

Looking Ahead

지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now

You can distinguish everyday polite and formal deferential Korean with precision, identify and correct register drift across a whole paragraph, and organize a short formal paragraph with a clear main sentence, supporting detail, and conclusion. This opens Unit I, 공식 담화와 분석 (Formal Discourse and Analysis), in Speak and Write Korean Volume IV: Professional, Academic, Media, and Institutional Korean.

Chapter 2기관 언어와 절차 — Institutional Language and Procedures

Chapter 2 builds directly on this chapter's register discipline, applying it to administrative genres, procedure description, and formal requests used in institutional settings such as offices, schools, and public services.
