Classification, contrast, and data-linked explanation · Speak and Write Korean: Professional, Academic, Media, and Institutional Korean

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Classify and group items, options, or trends using formal category vocabulary and noun-modifying structures.
  2. Compare two or more items, systems, or periods using comparison particles and expanded contrastive connectors.
  3. Describe simple data — proportions, changes, and trends — in formal deferential Korean.
  4. Read and interpret a short comparative report or data-linked passage.
  5. Write a short comparative analysis that classifies, contrasts, and refers to data.
  6. Maintain register and sentence-level discipline across a longer, more complex piece of formal writing than in Chapter 2.

This chapter expands contrastive and concessive connectors and introduces slightly longer formal complex sentences for comparison and classification. It does not introduce new particles or new speech levels; it deepens systems already active since Volume III within the institutional and analytical domain of this unit.

Opening Scenario

박 교수님's seminar has moved from institutional procedure to institutional analysis. 수아 and 민준's class has been asked to compare two university housing options — on-campus dormitories and off-campus one-room apartments (원룸) — for a short report to incoming exchange students. As they gather information, they realize that describing options clearly requires more than vocabulary: it requires classifying options into categories, contrasting their advantages and disadvantages, and referring to simple data, such as approximate costs and the proportion of students who choose each option. 박 교수님 uses this task to introduce the language of classification, comparison, and data-linked explanation that appears across academic, professional, and public analysis in Korean.

  1. You will learn how to classify items and options into categories using formal noun phrases.
  2. You will practice comparing and contrasting options using comparison particles and expanded connectors.
  3. You will read and write short passages that refer to proportions, changes, and simple data.

Receptive Vocabulary — Report and Data Language

The following items are receptive. Learners recognize them in reports and short data commentary; they are not assessed as an independent productive set.

KoreanMeaningStatus
응답자respondent (to a survey)receptive, report vocabulary
조사 결과survey results, findingsreceptive, report vocabulary

These terms support reading short reports accurately. They are not assessed productively in this chapter.

발음 — Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation Focus

Pronunciation — Contrastive stress and pausing in comparison sentences

This chapter introduces no new sound-change rule. Comparative sentences built with 반면에 and -에 비해 are easiest to follow aloud when the speaker pauses briefly after the compared item and gives it slightly more emphasis, so that the listener can clearly identify what is being set against what.

In data commentary, numbers and percentages should be read clearly and at a measured pace, with a small pause between the number and the following counter or unit, so that 삼십 퍼센트 and similar phrases are not rushed together with surrounding words.

Grammar and Sentence Patterns

This chapter develops classification, comparison, and data-linked explanation. It expands two connector systems already active since Volume III — contrast and concession — into more formal analytical use, and introduces no new particles or speech levels.

1. Classifying with 유형 and 기준

Review and expansion — classification vocabulary and noun-modifying clauses

To classify items formally, state the criterion first with 기준, then name the resulting categories with 유형. Noun-modifying clauses, already active since earlier volumes, describe each type precisely.

  • 비용을 기준으로 주거 형태를 두 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있습니다.Based on cost, housing types can be classified into two categories.
  • 학교 안에 있는 유형과 학교 밖에 있는 유형으로 나뉩니다.They are divided into the type located on campus and the type located off campus.

2. Comparing with 보다, -에 비해, and 반면에

Expansion — comparison particle and contrastive connectors in formal analysis

The comparison particle 보다 compares two items directly. The construction -에 비해 ("compared to ~") is more formal and common in written analysis. 반면에 begins a new sentence that contrasts with the one before it, and is especially useful for structuring a two-part comparison across several sentences.

  • 기숙사는 원룸보다 비용이 저렴합니다.Dormitories are less expensive than one-room apartments.
  • 원룸에 비해 기숙사는 개인 공간이 좁은 편입니다.Compared to one-room apartments, dormitories tend to have less personal space.원룸 + 에 비해 [comparison] + 기숙사는 [topic] + 좁은 편입니다 [tendency]
  • 기숙사는 비용이 저렴합니다. 반면에 원룸은 자유로운 생활이 가능합니다.Dormitories are inexpensive. On the other hand, one-room apartments allow for more independent living.

3. Data Commentary — 비율, 증가하다/감소하다, and 전반적으로

Expansion — describing proportions and trends in formal register

비율 combined with percentages describes proportions; 증가하다 and 감소하다 describe change over time or between groups. 전반적으로 opens a sentence that summarizes an overall pattern after specific data has been given, a common structure in short reports.

  • 신입생의 약 육십 퍼센트가 기숙사를 선택하는 것으로 나타났습니다.It appears that about sixty percent of first-year students choose dormitories.
  • 최근 몇 년간 원룸을 선택하는 학생의 비율이 증가했습니다.In recent years, the proportion of students choosing one-room apartments has increased.
  • 전반적으로 두 유형 사이에 뚜렷한 차이가 있습니다.Overall, there is a clear difference between the two types.
Building Block — The classification-and-comparison paragraph

[기준] + [유형 1과 유형 2] + [유형 1의 특징] + 반면에, [유형 2의 특징] + 전반적으로, [요약]

비용을 기준으로 주거 형태를 두 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있습니다. 기숙사는 원룸보다 비용이 저렴합니다. 반면에 원룸은 자유로운 생활이 가능합니다. 전반적으로 두 유형 사이에 뚜렷한 차이가 있습니다.

Based on cost, housing types can be classified into two categories. Dormitories are less expensive than one-room apartments. On the other hand, one-room apartments allow for more independent living. Overall, there is a clear difference between the two types.

FunctionEveryday politeFormal analytical
direct comparison더 싸요비용이 더 저렴합니다
comparison with 비해그거보다 나아요그것에 비해 낫습니다
contrast between sentences근데 이건 달라요반면에 이것은 다릅니다
overall summary전체적으로 봐서전반적으로

Practice — Classification and comparison

  1. Using 기준 and 유형, write one sentence classifying two options familiar to you (two types of transportation, two types of part-time jobs, etc.).
  2. Rewrite 이게 저거보다 좋아요 as a formal comparison using -에 비해.
  3. Write two sentences connected with 반면에 that contrast an advantage of one option with an advantage of another.
  4. Write one sentence using 비율 and a percentage to describe an imagined survey result.

Model Dialogue

수아 and 민준 discuss their housing comparison before writing their report for incoming exchange students.

Context: two students planning a short comparative report together, in a study group. Formal deferential register is used because the resulting report will be institutional and public-facing, even though the planning conversation itself is between peers.

수아 먼저 비용을 기준으로 기숙사와 원룸을 분류해 볼까요? Shall we first classify dormitories and one-room apartments based on cost?
민준 좋은 생각입니다. 기숙사는 원룸에 비해 비용이 확실히 저렴한 편입니다. That's a good idea. Dormitories are certainly less expensive compared to one-room apartments.
수아 맞습니다. 반면에 원룸은 개인 공간과 생활의 자유라는 장점이 있습니다. That's right. On the other hand, one-room apartments have the advantage of personal space and freedom in daily life.
민준 그렇다면 두 유형의 공통점과 차이점을 표로 정리하는 게 좋겠습니다. In that case, it would be good to organize the similarities and differences between the two types in a table.
수아 동의합니다. 그리고 신입생 설문 조사 결과도 근거로 넣으면 좋을 것 같습니다. I agree. And I think it would be good to include the first-year survey results as supporting evidence too.
민준 신입생의 약 육십 퍼센트가 기숙사를 선택한다는 자료가 있었죠? There was data showing that about sixty percent of first-year students choose dormitories, right?
수아 네, 맞습니다. 다만 최근 몇 년간 원룸을 선택하는 비율이 증가하고 있다는 점도 함께 고려해야 합니다. Yes, that's right. However, we also need to take into account that the proportion choosing one-room apartments has been increasing in recent years.
민준 전반적으로 두 유형 사이에 뚜렷한 차이가 있다는 점을 결론으로 정리하면 되겠습니다. We can conclude by summarizing that overall there is a clear difference between the two types.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. What criterion do 수아 and 민준 use to classify housing options first?
  2. According to the dialogue, what advantage does 원룸 offer compared to a dormitory?
  3. What survey finding do they plan to use as supporting evidence?
  4. What trend do they agree they must also consider when writing their conclusion?

Guided Practice

  1. Choose two real or realistic options you could compare (two study methods, two neighborhoods, two class schedules) and list one advantage and one disadvantage of each in English.
  2. Translate your list into Korean sentences using 장점, 단점, and 반면에 in formal deferential style.
  3. Add one sentence using -에 비해 that directly compares the two options.
  4. Add a concluding sentence beginning with 전반적으로 that summarizes your comparison.

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following passage aloud at a measured pace. Listen twice without reading, then complete the tasks below.

Listening task: Listen and answer in English.

질문답
What two commuting methods are compared?______
What advantage does public transportation have over biking?______
What disadvantage does biking have?______
What percentage of students bike, and what is the recent trend?______

Reading Practice

Read the following short comparative report, refer to the accompanying data summary, then answer the questions that follow.

Comprehension questions:

  1. According to the report, what two categories was housing type classified into, and on what basis?
  2. What is one advantage and one disadvantage of each housing type, according to the report?
  3. What trend has been observed over the past three years?
  4. Summarize the report's overall conclusion in one English sentence.

Writing Workshop

This chapter's writing task asks you to write a short comparative analysis suitable for incoming students, classifying two options, contrasting them, and referring to simple data, following the reading passage's structure and Chapter 1 and 2's register discipline.

  1. Choose your two options. Select two comparable options relevant to student life (housing, commuting, study methods, part-time work).
  2. Classify first. State your criterion with 기준 and name the two 유형 before comparing them.
  3. Describe each type in turn. Give at least one advantage and one disadvantage for each type, connecting the second description with 반면에.
  4. Add a comparison and, if possible, a proportion. Use -에 비해 at least once, and include one sentence with 비율 or a percentage if your topic allows it.
  5. Close with an overall summary. End with a sentence beginning 전반적으로, as in the model text.
  6. Check the whole, not just the sentence. Read your analysis aloud once, checking that formal register is unbroken and that each type is described in a balanced way.

체크리스트 — Checklist:

  • Every predicate ending is in consistent formal deferential register.
  • Two options are clearly classified before being compared.
  • At least one comparison uses -에 비해 or 보다, and one contrast uses 반면에.
  • The analysis ends with an overall summary beginning 전반적으로.
  • Spacing, particles, and Hangeul spelling are accurate throughout, with no romanization.

Speaking Practice

통제 연습 — Controlled practice: 두 가지 유형 비교하기

Say your comparative analysis from the Guided Practice section aloud, using 기준, 반면에, and 전반적으로 clearly and in consistent formal register.

의사소통 과제 — Communicative task: 발표 후 질의응답

With a partner, present your comparison aloud as a short informal presentation. The partner should ask one clarifying question about the data or the criteria, and the presenter should respond using -에 따르면 or 기준으로 as appropriate.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself presenting your comparison and then, in the same recording, ask and answer one likely question a listener might have about your data. Listen back and check that your register remains consistently formal.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Comparison and indirectness in Korean analysis

Formal Korean comparison and analysis commonly presents both sides of a contrast fairly, even when a writer favors one option, before arriving at a conclusion. Structuring a comparison with 반면에 and closing with 전반적으로 reflects this pattern of balanced presentation before summary judgment.

Culture in Context — Data caution in public-facing writing

Public-facing Korean reports and notices commonly hedge data claims with expressions such as 나타났습니다 ("it appeared that") or 것으로 보입니다 ("it seems that") rather than stating figures as absolute fact, particularly when data comes from a survey rather than a complete count.

Regional Awareness — Housing options vary by university and city

The proportions and cost patterns described in this chapter's readings are illustrative. Actual housing options, costs, and student preferences vary significantly by university, city, and program, and learners should treat this chapter's figures as examples of the language pattern rather than as current statistics.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Comparing without classifying first

Error: 기숙사는 싸고 원룸은 자유로워요. — jumps straight to comparison without establishing categories, which is unclear in formal analytical writing.

Correction: 비용을 기준으로 주거 형태를 두 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있습니다. — state the criterion and categories before comparing.

Common Mistake — Using 반면에 without a genuine contrast

Error: 기숙사는 저렴합니다. 반면에 원룸도 저렴합니다. — the second clause does not actually contrast with the first.

Correction: Use 반면에 only when the second clause presents a genuinely contrasting point, such as 반면에 원룸은 자유로운 생활이 가능합니다.

Common Mistake — Stating a percentage as flat fact from a survey

Error: 학생의 육십 퍼센트는 기숙사에 삽니다. — presented as certain fact when the source is a survey.

Correction: 응답자의 약 육십 퍼센트가 기숙사를 선택한 것으로 나타났습니다. — hedge survey-based figures appropriately.

Chapter Review

Section A — 어휘 (Vocabulary)

1. Give the meaning of 유형, 비율, and 근거, and use each in an original sentence.

2. Explain the difference between 증가하다 and 감소하다.

Section B — 문법 (Grammar)

1. Rewrite the following as a formal comparison using -에 비해: 이게 저거보다 나아요.

2. Write a short classification-and-comparison paragraph for two options of your choice, using 기준, 반면에, and 전반적으로.

Section C — 독해 이해 (Reading Comprehension)

1. Summarize the housing report in three or four English sentences, including its classification, its main contrast, and its trend.

Section D — 쓰기 (Writing)

Answer Key

Model Dialogue — Comprehension

  1. 수아 and 민준 use cost as the criterion for classifying housing options.
  2. 원룸 offers greater personal space and freedom in daily life compared to a dormitory.
  3. They plan to use the finding that about sixty percent of first-year students choose dormitories.
  4. They agree they must also consider that the proportion choosing 원룸 has been increasing in recent years.

Listening comprehension

  • The two methods compared are using public transportation and using a bicycle.
  • Public transportation can be used reliably regardless of weather, unlike biking.
  • Biking is difficult to use on rainy days.
  • About forty percent of students bike, and this proportion has been gradually increasing.

Reading comprehension

  1. Housing was classified into dormitory type and one-room apartment type, based on cost.
  2. Dormitories are cheaper but have less personal space; one-room apartments cost more but allow more freedom in daily life.
  3. The proportion of students choosing one-room apartments has been steadily increasing over the past three years.
  4. Overall, the two housing types show a clear difference in terms of cost and personal space.

Chapter Review — Section B

1. Corrected: 이것이 저것에 비해 낫습니다.

2. Sample response: 비용을 기준으로 통학 방법을 두 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있습니다. 버스는 자전거에 비해 비용이 더 듭니다. 반면에 자전거는 비용이 거의 들지 않습니다. 전반적으로 두 방법은 비용 면에서 뚜렷한 차이가 있습니다.

Section D — Sample response

Sample concluding sentence: 전반적으로 두 방법은 비용과 편의성이라는 기준에서 뚜렷한 차이를 보입니다.

Check that: every ending in the analysis matches formal register, both options are classified before being compared, and the analysis closes with a clear overall summary.

Looking Ahead

지금 할 수 있는 것 — What you can do now

You can classify options using formal category vocabulary, compare and contrast them using comparison particles and expanded connectors, and describe simple data and trends in formal register. This continues Unit I, 공식 담화와 분석 (Formal Discourse and Analysis), in Speak and Write Korean Volume IV: Professional, Academic, Media, and Institutional Korean.

Chapter 4입장, 주장, 그리고 근거 — Position, Argument, and Evidence

Chapter 4 builds on this chapter's classification and comparison skills, moving into stating a thesis, supporting it with evidence, and addressing concession and counterargument.
