Parallelism, emphasis, and controlled rhetorical style · Speak and Write Korean: Professional, Academic, Media, and Institutional Korean

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize and produce parallel sentence structure to organize related ideas with balance and clarity.
  2. Use controlled emphasis devices to highlight a key point without disrupting formal register.
  3. Read short formal and semi-literary passages and identify where parallelism and emphasis shape meaning.
  4. Listen to a model formal statement and identify its rhythmic and emphatic structure.
  5. Revise a piece of your own formal writing from Unit III to strengthen its style, rhythm, and emphasis.
  6. Deliver a short passage aloud with attention to phrase grouping, pacing, and emphatic stress appropriate to formal spoken Korean.

This chapter opens Unit IV, 문체, 리더십, 그리고 프로젝트 (Style, Leadership, and Project). It introduces parallelism, emphasis, and controlled rhetorical style as new productive systems, building on the argument and presentation skills consolidated in Chapter 15.

Opening Scenario

  1. You will study parallel structure and emphasis devices in a model passage.
  2. You will listen to a short formal statement and identify how rhythm and emphasis are used.
  3. You will read a short newsletter-style passage and mark its parallel and emphatic structures.
  4. You will revise a paragraph from your own Chapter 15 writing to add parallelism and controlled emphasis.
  5. You will read your revised paragraph aloud, attending to phrase grouping and emphatic stress.

문형 — Grammar and Style Patterns

Grammar and Style Patterns

This chapter introduces two new controlled systems: parallel sentence structure (병렬 구조) and emphasis devices (강조 표현). Both are built entirely on predicate endings, connectors, and clause structures already active from Chapters 1–15. No new particles, endings, honorific forms, or sound changes are introduced.

1. Parallel Structure (병렬 구조)

Parallel structure repeats a grammatical pattern across two or more clauses or phrases to create balance and make a list of ideas easier to follow. In Korean, this is most naturally built with repeated connective endings such as -고, repeated noun-modifying forms, or repeated sentence-final endings across consecutive sentences.

Building Block
Clause 1-고, Clause 2-고, Clause 3-다.
Repeating -고 across parallel clauses, then closing with a full sentence ending, creates a balanced list-like rhythm.
주민들은 오래 기다렸고, 여러 번 요청했고, 이제 답을 원한다.
The residents have waited a long time, have made requests many times, and now want an answer.
  • 연구는 자료를 모으고, 자료를 분석하고, 결론을 도출하는 과정이다.Research is a process of gathering data, analyzing data, and drawing a conclusion.[모으고] [분석하고] [도출하는] — three parallel -고/modifying forms before the final predicate
  • 이 문제는 개인의 문제가 아니라 공동체의 문제이다.This problem is not an individual problem but a community problem.이/가 아니라 ~이다 — parallel noun contrast frame

2. Emphasis Devices (강조 표현)

Formal Korean marks emphasis through word order, repetition, and controlled assertive endings rather than through pitch alone. This chapter activates three controlled emphasis strategies: fronting a key element for focus, repeating a key word for weight, and closing with a short, assertive sentence.

DeviceFunctionExampleGloss
Frontingmove the emphasized element to sentence-initial position바로 이 점이 문제이다.This exact point is the problem.
Lexical repetitionrepeat a key word across a short passage for weight신뢰가 필요하다. 신뢰 없이는 협력도 없다.Trust is needed. Without trust, there is no cooperation either.
Short assertive closeend a paragraph with a brief, declarative sentence그것이 전부이다.That is all.
Grammar Note — Style is built, not new grammar

Parallelism and emphasis in this chapter do not require any new ending, particle, or honorific form. They are achieved by choosing among endings and word orders you already control from Chapters 1–15 and arranging them deliberately. If a learner reaches for an unfamiliar ending to sound "more rhetorical," redirect them to repetition, fronting, or short closing sentences instead.

연습 — Practice: Combine each set of short sentences into one parallel sentence using repeated -고 or repeated noun-modifying forms.

  1. 학생들은 질문한다. 학생들은 토론한다. 학생들은 배운다. → ______
  2. 이 정책은 비용을 줄인다. 이 정책은 효율을 높인다. → ______
모범 대화 — Model Dialogue

Model Dialogue

박 교수님이 수아와 마이클의 초고를 검토하는 장면 (교육용 예시)

박 교수 내용은 좋습니다. 그런데 문장이 다 비슷한 길이로 나열되어 있어서 리듬이 없어요.The content is good. But the sentences are all lined up at a similar length, so there is no rhythm.
수아 그러면 어떻게 강조를 넣을 수 있을까요?Then how could we add emphasis?
박 교수 가장 중요한 문장을 짧게 만들고, 그 앞에 비슷한 구조의 문장 두세 개를 나란히 놓아 보세요.Try making the most important sentence short, and placing two or three similarly structured sentences in front of it.
마이클 예를 들면 '기다렸고, 요청했고, 이제 답을 원한다'처럼요?Like, for example, "have waited, have requested, and now want an answer"?
박 교수 바로 그겁니다. 그렇게 하면 문장에 힘이 생겨요.Exactly that. Doing it that way gives the sentence strength.
읽기 연습 — Reading Practice

Reading Practice

Read the following short newsletter-style passage. It is a general-purpose instructional text, not an authentic published source. Identify each instance of parallel structure and emphasis.

모범 기고문 (교육용 예시)

야간 공사 소음 문제는 오래되었다. 주민들은 참았고, 문제를 제기했고, 회신을 기다렸다. 그러나 돌아온 것은 침묵이었다. 신뢰가 필요하다. 신뢰 없이는 협력도 없다. 바로 이 점이 이번 논의의 출발점이다.

내용 이해 — Comprehension questions:

  1. Identify the sentence that uses repeated -고/-았/었다 parallel structure.
  2. Identify the sentence that uses lexical repetition for emphasis.
  3. Identify the sentence that uses fronting (바로) for emphasis.
  4. How does the short final sentence change the rhythm of the passage compared to the sentences before it?
듣기 연습 — Listening Practice

Listening Practice

Ask your instructor, a language partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short formal statement aloud, pausing slightly at each comma to mark the parallel phrases. Listen twice, then complete the tasks below.

쓰기 워크숍 — Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop

Revise one paragraph from your Chapter 15 written task (or a comparable short formal paragraph) to add parallel structure and at least one emphasis device, without changing its underlying claim.

  • 원문 확인. Reread your Chapter 15 paragraph and underline any list-like ideas that could become parallel clauses.
  • 병렬 구조 만들기. Rewrite at least one sentence as a parallel structure using repeated -고 or repeated modifying forms.
  • 강조 넣기. Add one emphasis device: fronting, lexical repetition, or a short assertive closing sentence.
  • 비교. Compare your original and revised versions and note what changed in rhythm, not just meaning.
  • Before (Ch. 15 style) 결론적으로, 주민들의 우려는 근거가 있는 것으로 볼 수 있으며, 담당 부서는 이 문제를 진지하게 검토할 필요가 있다.
After (Ch. 16 style) 주민들은 참았고, 요청했고, 답을 기다렸다. 신뢰가 필요하다. 바로 이 점을 담당 부서가 검토해야 한다.

    체크리스트 — Checklist:

    • At least one sentence uses parallel structure (repeated -고 or repeated modifying forms).
    • At least one emphasis device (fronting, repetition, or short assertive close) is used.
    • The underlying claim from Chapter 15 is unchanged.
    • Formal register from Chapter 12 is maintained throughout.
    • Spacing, particles, and Hangeul spelling are accurate, with no romanization.
    • No structure is used beyond what has been activated in Chapters 1–16.
    말하기 연습 — Speaking Practice

    Speaking Practice

    1단계 — 낭독 — Reading aloud

Read your revised paragraph aloud, pausing slightly at each parallel phrase and slowing down slightly before the short, assertive closing sentence.

    2단계 — 강조 확인 — Partner check

Have a partner listen and identify where you used parallel structure and where you used emphasis. Ask them whether the closing sentence felt noticeably shorter and more forceful.

혼자 하는 연습 — Solo alternative

Record yourself reading the paragraph twice: once at an even pace with no pauses, and once with deliberate pauses at the parallel phrases. Compare the two recordings.

    Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Style as a mark of care

In Korean academic, institutional, and media writing, a well-balanced sentence with clear rhythm is often read as evidence that the writer has taken the piece seriously, in much the same way that clean formatting or careful proofreading signals effort in other traditions; deliberate parallel structure and controlled emphasis are common in newsletters, opinion pieces, and formal remarks.

Important Boundary — Style, not new grammar

This chapter's parallelism and emphasis devices are built entirely from endings, connectors, and word orders already active from Chapters 1–15. Learners who try to import unfamiliar honorific forms, dense classical-sounding vocabulary, or unscheduled endings to sound "more rhetorical" should be redirected back to the controlled devices in this chapter.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Uneven parallel structure

Error: Starting a parallel list with -고 but switching to a different ending partway through, breaking the balance.

Correction: Keep the same ending or modifying form across every item in the parallel list until the final clause closes the sentence.

    Common Mistake — Overusing emphasis

Error: Fronting or repeating a key word in almost every sentence, so nothing stands out anymore.

Correction: Reserve fronting and repetition for the single most important point in a paragraph; use it once or twice, not throughout.

Common Mistake — Losing formal register while adding style

Error: Shifting into casual or exclamatory endings while trying to sound more forceful.

Correction: Keep the formal written style from Chapter 12; force and rhythm come from structure and word order, not from a casual ending.

    Chapter Review

    Section A — 어휘 (Vocabulary)

    1. Define 병렬 구조, 강조하다, and 도치 in your own words.

Section B — 문형 (Grammar and Style)

    1. Complete the two parallel-structure combination items from the Grammar section above.

    2. Write one original sentence using fronting for emphasis and one using lexical repetition.
